OUT 823--ILLIMO BITZ

HEY OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THURSDAY--A NEW DAY

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!
Again, prayers go out to Haiti, Chile, China, and WV and to the families of civil rights activists Dorothy Height and Benjamin Hooks.

As Poetry Month comes to a close, we highlight one of the greats who was born in the ILLMO area---Langston Hughes.

James Mercer Langston Hughes, (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was an
American poet, novelist, playwright, short story writer, and columnist. He was one of the earliest innovators of the new literary art form jazz poetry. Hughes is best-known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the Harlem Renaissance saying that "Harlem was in vogue."

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri. While in grammar school in Lincoln, Illinois, Hughes was elected class poet. Langston was raised in Lawrence, Kansas were he spent most of childhood in Lawrence, Kansas.

During high school in Cleveland, Ohio, he wrote for the school newspaper, edited the yearbook, and began to write his first short stories, poetry, and dramatic plays. His first piece of jazz poetry, "'When Sue Wears Red", was written while he was still in high school. It was during this time that he discovered his love of books. From this early period in his life, Hughes would cite as influences on his poetry the American poets Paul Laurence Dunbar and Carl Sandburg.

First published in
The Crisis in 1921, the verse that would become Hughes' signature poem, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", appeared in his first book of poetry The Weary Blues in 1926
Hughes enrolled in
Lincoln University, a historically black university in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Hughes earned a B.A. degree from Lincoln University in 1929. He then moved to New York. Except for travels to areas that included parts of the Caribbean, Hughes lived in Harlem as his primary home for the remainder of his life.

Hughes' life and work were enormously influential during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s alongside those of his contemporaries, Zora Neale Hurston, Wallace Thurman, Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, Richard Bruce Nugent, and Aaron Douglas, who, collectively (with the exception of McKay), created the short-lived magazine Fire!! Devoted to Younger Negro Artists.
Thus, his
poetry and fiction centered generally on insightful views of the working class lives of blacks in America, lives he portrayed as full of struggle, joy, laughter, and music.

In 1930, his first novel, Not Without Laughter, won the Harmon Gold Medal for literature.[43Hughes's first collection of short stories came in 1934 with The Ways of White Folks
Through the black publication
Chicago Defender, Hughes in 1943 gave creative birth to Jesse B. Semple, often referred to and spelled Simple, the everyday black man in Harlem who offered musings on topical issues of the day.

In, 1951 his seminal work Montage of a Dream Deferred (1951) was one of of his significant works along with his signature piece, “Harlem” aka “ A Dream Deferred” which was the inspiration for Lorraine Hansberry’s "A Raisin in the Sun" a play that debuted on Broadway in 1959.

On May 22, 1967, Langston Hughes died at the age of 65. His ashes are interred beneath a floor medallion in the middle of the foyer leading to the auditorium named for him within the Arthur Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.[3

BEFORE WE GET INTO THE BIZ, YOU MIGHT WANNA PLAY THE NUMBER 424 CUZ MANY OF OUR STORIES HAS APRIL 24(424) AS A DATE OF APPEARANCE OR OCCASION AS YOU WILL SEE:

THE BIG NEWZ STORY this week WAS:

President Barack "BA--ROCK STAR" Obama made stops in the ILLIMO area for his Wall Street tour Obama made a two-day swing (Tuesday and Wednesday) through rural stretches of the American heartland this week, for his White House to Main Street tour talking up economic progress and his Wall Street regulatory efforts as he tries to energize Democratic voters.
On Tuesday, Obama started his two-day tour by flying Air Force One to Fort Madison, Iowa. Speaking at a Siemens Energy Inc facility that has 600 employees and manufactures rotor blades for wind turbines. Prior to his speech, the President got a tour of the facility including a step-by-step demonstration of the construction of a turbine blade. Later on, the president traveled to Mount Pleasant, Iowa to tour a local business then held a rally at a community college in Ottumwa, Iowa.

On Wednesday, Obama made an unannounced stop for lunch Wednesday at Peggy Sue’s Cafe in Monroe City, Mo., where he talked with customers about health care and other issues. Then, a quarter mile from the ethanol plant, he was greeted by about 100 people. The crowd was a mixture of onlookers, supporters and protesters, including one who had a sign with a rifle sketched on it that said, “Try to take it away.”
Then the motorcade swooped him to speak to a crowd of 2,100 people in Macon. Mo. then it was off to Poet Bio-refinery to talk to workers that renewable energy is the future and they are making a difference in the nation's energy policy and in the overall economy then he toured the facility. Before the president's arrival in Macon, protestors there were able to organize a rally. A crowd estimated at nearly 1,100 people gathered Tuesday night to protest universal healthcare and big government. The rally was organized by the state republican party and a tea party group called the Macon County Patriots
Then, he went to Quincy, Ill. to the city’s Oakley-Lindsay Center to give the final speech on his two-day tour of the Midwest. It was reported that close to 3,000 people, gathered to hear Obama’s 30-minute speech, in which he defended passage of health care and called for support of the financial legislation reform now in the U.S. Senate. Those who were able to get the limited number of free tickets to the event stood in line Tuesday for their tickets and Wednesday for admission (We hear that some received their tickets four hours after arriving to receive tickets and the line at one point stretched almost 4 blocks )

A small civilized protest took place outside the civic center that included some who said they affiliated with the “Tea Party” movement.
Obama’s last visit to the city was almost two years after a campaign stop to help residents protect their town from floodwaters.
Is it us , or does it feel more like President BaROCK-STAR Obama was doing a re-election campaign to those potentials voters who didnt vote fo rhim last time as well as rcharching momemtum for the mid elections this year? Hmm, we just sayin.
In unrelated Obama newz, the President will deliver the eulogy today, Thursday morning at the funeral of civil rights leader Dorothy Height. The service will be held at Washington National Cathedral. Height died last week at age 98 after a long illness. In the afternoon, Obama will present the 2010 National Teacher of the Year Award and honor state teachers of the year from all across the country.

The big A&E STORY was
Actress/comic Niecy Nash and Louis Van Amstel survived another week on “Dancing with the Stars” when the deciding round aired Tuesday. For her routine, Nash decided to bring humor to her and her partner’s Argentine tango. Their score for the individual dance was 21--straight sevens. But their couple scores tied with Chad Ocho and Cheryl Burke for the lowest scores with 18 on Monday. "Comedy and food, two of my favorite things. How can you go wrong?" Nash would comment after her dance.

So, do you think she will survive another week next week?

THERE WERE THREE MAJOR ILL MO SPORTS NEWZ STORIES HAPPENING:

Last week was the NFL Draft. The St. Louis Rams picked eleven new team members. The first draft pick was Sam Bradford(PICTURED ABOVE), QB, Oklahoma, who spoke with the press last Friday at Rams Park and who’s jersey No. 8 was already generating revenue on eBay!

Second round first pick was offensive tackle Rodger Saffold (PICTURED), of Indiana who was a guest on the Demetrious Johnson Radio Show on Hot 104.1 this past Sunday.

Second round first pick was offensive tackle Rodger Saffold (PICTURED), of Indiana;

The other picks were Mardy Gilyard, Wide Receiver fourth round; tight end Michael Hoomanawanui, of Illinois (PICTURED) fifth round; Defensive end Hall Davis, of Louisiana-Lafayette Fifth round, pick 18; Tight End Fendi Onobun, of , Houston sixth round; Defensive end Eugene Sims, ofWest Texas A&M sixth round, pick 20; Defensive back Marquis Johnson, of Alabama seventh round, pick 4; Defensive End George Selvie, of South Florida of Seventh round, pick 19; Linebacker Josh Hull, of Penn State seventh round, pick 47.

In other ILLIMO sports newz, Milwaukee Bucks general manager and former Mizzou alum b-ball coach John Hammond has won the National Basketball Association's Executive of the Year award.Hammond becomes the first Bucks executive to be so honored since the award's inception for the 1972-'73 season.
Voting is done by executives from the league's 30 teams. Hammond received 12 votes to place first, while Oklahoma City's Sam Presti was second with nine votes and Cleveland's Danny Ferry finished third with two votes. Hammond was recognized for his work in reshaping the Bucks roster. In just his second year as the team's general manager, the Bucks improved from 34 to 46 victories and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2006 ( and not to mention currently playing in the NBA Eastern Finals against the Atlanta Hawks.)

And speaking of St. Louis Rams, things are heating up on whether former Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will sign to the Rams as RB Steven Jackson's backup. As of this blogging, it was reported by St. Louis Globe Democrat that he may wait until training camp before deciding whether to sign with a team, and that the free agent does not appear to be generating any current interest from other teams outside the Rams. It was reported earlier this week that after he met with Rams organizers in St. Louis and saw what they were offering in order to sign him, he needed time to think it (Can we say sport agent move? ) When he was in the STL, Westbrook reprtedly went through a very extensive medical examination to see he was dutible especially after the concussions as well as the knee and ankle injuries and subsequent surgeries that took him off the Philly field.

Skeptics are saying that his coming to the STL may hurt him--lietrally in that the Rams play indoors on artificial turf something that could hurt his surgery laden soft knee.

Well, we will have to see if he waits during training camp to sign or sneak the ink in while we are sleeping.

Grammy Award winning Chitown native rapper Common will be starring in his first starring role in the romantic comedy “Just Wright,” co-starring Queen Latifah. The film , which tells the story of a physical therapist falling for the basketball player she is helping recover from a career-threatening injury, will be released nationwide May 14.

R&B veteran and STL native Ron Isley spoke on the Steve Harvey Radio Morning Show recently about his new projects post-prison.. Isley said that he will release a new gospel album inspired by his time spent working in the jail house chapel and he plans to debut a new album for Def Jam Records. According to Isley, fans should expect a lineup of collaborations on the upcoming album (a mainstay these days for artists to have hits) . He said that he will be working with the likes of heavy hitters "
Lauryn Hill, T.I., Rick Ross and legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach,

Now what we are confused on is that it was reported that Isley was released from jail in Terre Haute this month after completing a three-year and one month sentence for tax evasion. But, locally here in St. Louis , it was reported in February that he served the rest of his sentence at a halfway house in St. Louis. Plus, YOURS TRULY, saw him recording in Notifi Studios earlier this month while we were recording radio shows with Dwight Stone. SO hmmmmmmmm.

R&B singer Akon has filed a lawsuit against his former business partners alleging they used his name for a new perfume without permission. The New York Daily News reported that Akon, whose entertainment company is called Konvict Music, was recently in negotiations to create and market his own scent, only to learn that his partners went behind his back, formed Konvict Cosmetics International and began selling the fragrance Konvict without his approval. Akon is demanding the company cease production of its product, according to the lawsuit.

So the question is, did his biz partners steal his name for their line or did he sign away some papers that had fine print conditions?

Stripped in STL. Did anyone see the Stripper Mobile down at the Cards game April 16? Well, it was there with strippers, poles and all as it cruised through Busch Stadium promoting porn-star
Kendra Jade’s appearance at . Larry Flynt's Hustler Club in Washington Park (which also owns the mobile). Everything was fine, even with the Mayor, Francis Slay until someone who saw the mobile (A Christian lady and her six year old) complained to his office and he began to rise to another drummer.

Hmm, this sounds exactly like the hoopla that occurred after Erykah Badu filmed her controversial video, “Window Seat": in Dallas Tx, stripping naked and no one complaining until someone did and Badu got fined a misdemeanor for public conduct. So how is Slay going to handle this one? We can see it now as reps from City Hall goes to Larry Flynt’s spot to hand the owner a citation—right after they “make it rain.” LOL

Grammy Award winning soul legend Al Green and talk show veteran Bob Eubanks were part of this year's Variety charity gala “Dinner with the Stars,” last Saturday (APRIL 24) at the Chase Park Plaza. Green performed his classic hits such as "Let's Stay Together" and Eubanks emceed.

Tennis legend and Grand Slam champ John Mcenroe (PICTURED)was in town to play against another Grand slam champ Jim Courier last Saturday at The Family Arena for a one night only tennis Hall of Famers game. We don’t know what the outcome was, but we are sure McEnroe was not happy with at least one call made against him from the judges. LOL

There are several national acts coming to the Lou to perform:

It was announced this week that teen hearthrobs Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato were touring together with a tour stop Aug. 6 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.

AND

80's girl group The Bangles will perform May 2 at the Pageant

AND

Comic/actor Bobcat Goldthwait will perform at 8 p.m. May 27 at the Casino Queen.

Guitar veteran Mark Knopfler of the Dire Straits performed recently at the Fox Theatre and from reports got a standing ovation after playing a long version of the epochal Dire Straits hit "Sultans of Swing,”

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ SPOTLIGHT
Why did J Bucks Restaurant in downtown STL recently go through a name change(it’s now Joe Bucks)?

St Louis Post Schmooze’s Deb Peterson reported recently that Joe Buck, the sportscaster, former talk show host and son to the late legendary sportscaster Jack Buck, took ownership of the restaurant recently. But the question raised was is his sister, Julie, still an owner of the restaurant? J Bucks was named after Jack Buck.

Also, according to Peterson, an e-mail invitation to the venue read that the spot was at Joe Buck’s Restaurant. “Last we heard, there was a Joe Buck Showroom attached to the J. Buck’s Restaurant downtown at 1000 Clark Street, but that was it,” reported Peterson.
Peterson also reported that when the venue was called up an employee said “it was indeed now Joe Buck’s and she said that was because he was “Jack Buck’s son.” Well what does that make sister Julie Buck?”

It was discovered that the spot went through a name change in November “to distinguish it from the J. Buck’s Restaurant in Clayton.”

Hmmm. Sounds like Joe may have bought out Julie’s ownership. What yawl think?

B-day shout out to Cedric “Kyles” The Entertainer who was born April 24.

Two reality show based personalities involving health and fitness were in town in STL on the same day (April 24) supporting two different causes

First, NBC's Biggest Loser winner Ali Vincent for the March for Babies in Forest Park which raised over $1. million to help fund research and programs to help all babies in Missouri and the Metro East be born healthy. Farther west, Dr Ian of Vh1’s “Celebrity Fit Club” came to the STL to promote his Million Pound Challenge and kick off his national “Be Sickle Smart” empowerment campaign with a free public event with free screenings to educate persons with sickle cell anemia and their families at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac Hotel.
For those who got screened, Smith gave away free copies of his latest book, “Happy – Simple Steps to Get the Most out of Life,” to the first 75 people.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Speaking of reality show stars, STL native fashion designer and former “Project Runway” partipanat Qristyl Frazier is involved in yet another competition. This time she is one of the contestants vying for votes as The Plus Size Designer of the Year to showcase at the Full Fugured Fashion Week in NYC in July. From last reports, she was in the running and voting ended April 29. We will keep you posted!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After 90s R&B group Troop performed at The Venue last Friday, they were spotted at Karama Nightclub getting their chill on in one of the lower VIP booths. Now the question is, did any of the crowd even know who they were cuz many there were tiny tots when their song “Spread My Wings” was a hit. LOL

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
There was a blackout Friday at one of St Louis most popular nightclub entertainment sections in Midtown-- Compton and Locust and Olive due to the high winds and tornadic weather that occurred earlier. Businesses affected were The Loft and the restaurant next door, BP gas Station, the traffic lights on the intersection, Karma, Exo and Fubar (where about 20 or so people waited outside ). It occurred around 10ish at nite and ended around 1130 PM. After that, the lights were back on and the party people were back inside each establishment.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

104.1 personality Staci Static announced on Facebook that she was recently engaged. And we asked her in response, “So who’s the lucky guy/ Is his initials C.P.? as in local underground rapper Chip Price. LOL And we heard that she is preggo , too. Congrats.

Evening Whirl Chief Photpgrapher King Yella was recently hired as club photographer for All Out Mondays at the Ambassador.

OUTTOWN EXCLUSIVE

Talk show host/model Jon Erickque of the “Jon Erickque Show” was involved in a horrible accident early Sunday while traveling on Interstate 70. He was driving in a Range Rover that belonged to his fellow talk show colleague Tedi Gage who also was in the vehicle. From the raw footage reported by KMOV, the Rover flipped over and landed on the roof. Erickque and Gage survived the crash and both went to the hospital. He was released (he even was able to tape his show later that day) but Gage had injuries to her hand and knee and was not relased until later this week.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
And lastly, we are hearing that STL area club owner John Burns’ new club Envy in North County (old Knockouts)is almost ready for its grand opening. From our source, the paint is almost dry and the final touches and inspections shoudl be complete for its opening which should be sometime in May. And in related John Burns newz, we saw on Facebook some promotions for his club PLush located in downtwn East St. Louis , and saw that its newest location inside Blackmons Plaza is no longer a Blackmon;s Plaza, but is now Plush (with promtoion material saying formerly Blackomon;s Plaza). So, its apparent that Burns, or someone in his camp bought out the owner of Blackmon's Plaza. Just last month, Plush moved into Blackmon's Plaza after its former building burned down from a unexplained fire. Hmm, we are not the one to bring up conspiracy theories, but we just find it quite interesting of the series of events. We just sayin, but congrats to Burns for both club moves in ILLI and the MO.

BLIND BITZ. Who was the stylish sista chillin at Exo last Friday?

BLIND BITZ. While in the sauna at Bally’s in Clayton this week, it was overheard from a local boxer his convo about a convo he had with a "prize" boxer. He said that this "prize" boxer said to him about another "prize" boxer that he fought within the past year. Here is what the local boxer said the first mentioned "prize" boxer said to him, was saying ,
“ Yeah he was like, ‘oh I can beat him. I mean, he smokes blunts, drinks, even before his fights.” So the question is, who do you think is the "prize" boxer who told him this info and the other "prize" boxer that was talked about that can be easily beat? (Hint. Both are STL fighters).

And why did they have her doing that awful cherry eating duel digital short with Andy Samberg? Why did Larry King cheat on his wife with her sister? Why did singer Chrisette Michelle shave off her hair? Why does a KFC in South Central LA have a sign in its window saying they except EBT? Why did Mo’ nique say on her talk show that her fashion icon growing up was Miss Piggy? Why is the McDonalds always packed? Why hasn’t blue eyed soul singer Joss Stone blewn up as a superstar? Why did Simon call Big Mike’s performance on American Idol this week“a bit wet?” And why did Americna Idol judge Kara assumed that contestant Aaron didn’t have sex? Why do we not care that actor Leonard “Dr Spock” Nimoy is retiring from acting? And why does local photographer Erica Brooks always calling the Tony Scott Show during the Therapy Letter segments”? LOL
