As we celebrate National Poetry Month , we spotlight ILLIMO poets. This week we highlight newly appointed Missouri Poet Laureate David Clewell

David Clewell who was born in 1955 is an American poet. He graduated from University of Wisconsin and Washington University with an M.F.A. He is Missouri’s second poet laureate is David Clewell, a longtime professor at Webster University (Its first laureate was Walter Bargen of Ashland, Mo.) Clewell's poems have appeared in a wide variety of journals, such as Poetry, Harper's, The Georgia Review, The Kenyon Review, and New Letters. He also has published seven collections of poems--including Blessings in Disguise (a National Poetry Series winner), Now We're Getting Somewhere (Felix Pollak Poetry Prize) and, most recently, The Low End of Higher Things--and two booklength poems. In 2000 Clewell published a 50-page book “Jack Ruby’s America,” a series of narrative poems that include historical facts and dialogue about the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the guy who killed Lee Harvey Oswald. Clewell had said he’d worked on the book for five years, gathering clippings and details about the 1963 assassination in his cluttered office in Pearson House. His “Blessings in Disguise” was a winner in the National Poetry Series. Clewell also teaches poetry workshops and 19th and 20th century literature.

THE TOP A&E NEWZ BIT THIS WEEK IN THE ILLMO AREA IS THREE BIG STORIES ABOUT CHI-TOWN TALK SHOW QUEEN/MOGUL OPRAH WINFREY.

The first was the news that Oprah had a brief relationship in the early 1970s with then unknown John Tesh who became a music composer and broadcast journalist for the long running show, Entertainment Tonight (and hubby to actress Connie Selleca). According to the Associated Press, Tesh has confirmed that he and O were a romantic item. But the reason they split is what is getting folk talking up a storm. According to excerpts from Kitty Kelley 's (NEXT PICTURE BELOW) book "Oprah: A Biography," which were published in the New York Daily News, Tesh and Winfrey lived together in Nashville in 1974 while he was a news anchor at the city's NBC affiliate and Winfrey was the city's first female anchor at the CBS affiliate. But the romance fell apart when Tesh succumbed to the pressure of being in an interracial relationship. Kelley quotes an "ex-girlfriend of Tesh's" saying he told her one night he looked down and saw his white body next to Winfrey's black body and "couldn't take it anymore." The source, one of 850 people Kelley and her staff interviewed for the book, said Tesh later said he felt "very guilty" about it. Winfrey hasn't commented.
WOW seems like someone couldnt handle the swirl!

Biographer Kitty Kellys unauthorized book on the Big O is the talk of the world ever since the book came out this week. It appears thatteh book is trying to dispel the image of Oprah as the Universal Galaxy Mother of TV America. According to Kelly she interviewed more than 800 people (including her step father Vernon Winfrey which we will talk about later in this blurb) and spent four years researching the book. It book talks about her spoiled and diva-ish behavior , how she speaks in first person, how she is asexual and her affair with John Tesh among many other “secrets.”

According to MediaTakeOut.com, Oprah's father Vernon spilled the beans to Kitty Kelly. The man, who raised Oprah, fell out with the talk show queen a number of years ago.And to get her back, he agreed to DISH all the family secrets to author Kitty Kelley. From the report, Oprah does not believe in Jesus, she was asexual, she will never marry Stedman cuz she is a control freak and that her gal pal Gayle King was a street heifer. (Oh my!)

Her book has an initial printing of 500,000 copies, but she said some major news organizations have refused to schedule interviews for fear of Oprah's power and displeasure.

Hmm, go figure, News organizations ain’t gonna risk their chances of doing biz with Oprah especially with the new cable station. OWN, she is launching in 2011. The book will sell and go away from the conversation piece of the day and Oprah will continue on. And you think Oprah is going to talk about the book or any indications of her knowing about it? As in the words of her character Sophia in The Color Purple. “HELL NAAWW.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In unrelated Oprah newz, she announced last week that she will host a show on her upcoming network next year titled “Oprah’s Next Chapter.” It is tentatively scheduled to debut in late 2011, around the same time “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” her syndicated hit show produced in Chicago, signs off after 25 years.

Ms. Winfrey made the announcement in advance of a presentation in New York to potential advertisers. Her new show is considered the flagship of the cable network she and Discovery Networks plan to jointly launch in January 2011--“OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.” The network will host 15 original shows, many of which have self-improvement themes or else directly feature Winfrey herself. Mark Burnett, the television producer best known for creating the hit reality series “Survivor,” will be producing for OWN the new series “Your Own Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star.”

Winfrey’s current daytime show will become the star of its own series: “Behind the Scenes: The Oprah Show Final Season,” which will track the show’s final months. Frequent Winfrey daytime contributor Gayle King will also be in the host seat for “Gayle King Live!” a one-hour daily talk show.

In non Oprah newz, the next biggest story was in the STL--the War of the Rams Ownership.
After it seemed as though it was a done deal that after Illinois business tycoon Shaid Khan (RIGHT) entered into the bidding to buy the 60 percent share of the St. Louis Rams franchise in February from the late owner Georgia Frontiere’s children Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez it seemed as though the ownership transition would run smoothly. But this week, that was not the case now that minority owner, Missouri Native and pro-sports franchiser Stan Kroenke(LEFT) now is trying to purchase the Rams 100 percent share.

Kroenke reportedly has decided to exercise his right of first refusal to purchase the 60 percent share of the St. Louis Rams currently owned by Rosenbloom and Rodriguez and bidded by Khan. Kroenke currently owns 40 percent of the Rams, so if he's successful in this attempt, he will own 100 percent of the team.

The issue is Kroenke and his current cross ownership of other pro-sports teams and the NFL’s policy against cross ownership. NFL cross-ownership rules currently prevent owners from having a majority share of an NFL team in one city if they own a majority of another major-league team in another market. Kroenke currently owns both the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association and the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League—and the NFL aint having it and isn’t trying to bend the rules. In February, Kroenke was given 60 days to declare his intentions with respect to the team. He could stay at 40 percent, sell his 40 percent or exercise his matching rights on Khan's bid.
And guess what he chose—BINGO matching rights. So it should get interesting if Kroenke gets his wish to own the total share or that he will settle for 40. We think he will settle with 40.
And another thing, it must be a rule that you must wear a porn style moustache in order to be an owner of a sports team! LOL

St. Louis based rapper/mogul Nelly has found himself as the innocent man to a lawsuit involving a concert scam. According to reports, last week, Taiwanese event producers The Loop filed a suit in Manhattan claiming that bogus promoters Capital Connections Agency asked the Loop for $40 grand to book Nelly for a concert in Taiwan. Well, the concert never occurred and The Loop is crying FOUL. Executives at the Loop also claim the money was wired to CCA that initially denied receiving the
funds, and then claimed it arrived a day late.

But it gets even better.
Although, at first The Loop thought the agency was legit when it contracted with CCA to book Nelly for its Dec. 31, 2009, bash - which was promoted on Facebook (Facebook??? One flag),. Then, as reported, CCC allegedly denied getting the cash, then claimed it arrived a day late so they could keep it for breach of contract (CLEVER but no dice). Also, in the claim, CCC offered to send Ja Rule as a replacement which could not have occurred since The Loop already had booked him through his real reps. Executives at The Loop are suing CCA for the $40,000 booking fee and $250,000 for Nelly's alleged "no-show."

And we know what you are saying—What does Nelly have to do with the suit? Nothing actually. He was an innocent bystander in some ways but was thrown into the mix. We are sure that this case will be settled out of court and Nelly wont have to get a suit to testify against CCC.

In unrelated Nelly newz, we hear that the rap superstar wears the world’s most expensive cologne—Clive Christian No. 1 which is priced at $650. A white diamond bottle in a gold collar is priced at $2,350. Rappers 50 Cent and Diddy also spray it on themselves as well.

We guess its not enough to be rich, but you gotta smell like it too.

CORRECTION: Earlier last week, President Barack Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama taped an Idol Gives Back segment for American Idol that will air next Wednesday in the two-hour Idol Gives Back charity show.. Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, The Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox and Jeff Beck will perform (We originally had that the special Idol aired this Wednesday but that is incorrect) .
ADDED: In unrelated newz, President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, have doubled their income since he took office, declaring a joint gross income of 5.5 million dollars for the 2009 fiscal year, the White House said Thursday.

Obama earned an annual salary as president of 374,460 dollars since his inauguration in January 2009, according to his tax filings released Thursday.
But most of his income came from his books, which have leaped to the top of the bestseller lists since he first started running for the White House.

In 2008, Obama and his wife, Michelle, declared a joint gross income of 2.65 million dollars, most of which also came from royalties on his books "Dreams of My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope."

According to his 2009 documents, the Obamas paid 1.79 million dollars in federal taxes and 163,303 dollars in state taxes to Illinois where the couple owns a home in Chicago.

The Opening day ceremonies for the St. Louis Cardinals first home game took place at Busch Stadium Monday.
The game was against the Houston Astros

First baseman Albert Pujols launched a three-run homer as the Cardinals kept the Astros winless with a 5-0 victory in the 2010 home opener at Busch Stadium. Skip Schumaker scored three times and. Adam Wainwright struck out seven over eight innings .

BEFORE THE GANE, there were the opening ceremonies. Former manager Whitey Herzog(BOTTOM) , who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this July, threw out the ceremonial first pitch, with Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith (TOP) on the receiving end behind home plate. Smith was present as part of the Cardinals seven Hall of Fame members, which included an appearance by Stan Musial. Bob Gibson, Bruce Sutter, Lou Brock, Red Schoendienst, and Herzog.

Smith, who was part of the 1985 World Series , was also honored before the game 25 years later. Former slugger Jack Clark who also was on that 1985 also was on hand (Hmm, wonder if the McGwireheads booed him?)

Before the game started, Sikeston native opera singer Neal Boyd, 2007 winner of “America’s Got Talent,” sang “The Star Spangled Banner.”

The ILLMOians continue to get real on TV.

On Celebrity Apprentice, former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich got fired two weeks ago in the show's most unusual settings in the history of the show. As part of the team RockSolid and their project creating an interactive display plugging the
Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the new theme park attraction at Universal Studios that opens in June, . The entire finished product was basically left up to Poison frontman Bret Michaels, who Trump desperately wanted to fire. He kept asking Blagojevich if he was sure he didn't want to bring the Michaels into the boardroom with him. Then he asked him again. In a last-ditch effort to keep the ousted governor on the show, Trump even tried to convince Michaels to fall on his own sword. None of this worked, so Trump couldn't do anything but send Blagojevich into the good night. Well, in a couple months, Blago will be at a federal court in Illinois to see if the judge will say YA GUILTY or not.

Chitown native WWE diva Maria Kanellis (RIGHT) who’s part of Team Tenacity is still in the running on Apprentice and is using the publicity to her advantage by releasing her debut EP, ‘Sevin Sins’ now available on iTunes.

The other ILLMOian doing their thing on reality TV is actress Niecy Nash who is on Dancing with the Stars this season. Nash, who spent her teen years in St. Louis, performed a Rumba this week with her dance partner Louis Van Amstel in what Louis called a very spiritual dance. She dedicated her performance to her deceased brother. He died seventeen years ago in an act of gun violence As for the performance itself, the couple performed to Taking Chances, a song by Celine Dion and covered by Glee!
The judges gave them sixes all the way through in both technique and performance for a combined total of thirty-six. The judges felt the emotion in the dance, but they didn't feel the dance itself.

It also was an Internet rumor going around that Nash had questioned Amstel's sexuality during their rehearsals, but according to reports no comment was given on both parties on those allegations.

ADDED: And speaking of comics, what is this we just heard about Darius Bradford in jail? In Delores Shante's Partyline column in the St. Louis American this week, she talked about how Bradford was supposed to host his b-day party at Lure on Friday titled, "Sprung" (SEE EVENTZ BELOW) but got locked up this week for missing two court dates and apparently for the lack of child support payments to his baby mamma (Oh boy). Shante said said, " I got the note about the Free Darius Bradford movement and “Sprung” event going down tomorrow night at Lure. Okay, will y’all be mad when I say that I’m a little uncomfortable with this concept, even though more than likely I will be there to support it? I’m all for the “by any means necessary,” especially when it applies to one’s freedom, but I just…I don’t know. You know what…never mind. A quote from the plea reads, “This is his Birthday weekend the best present we can give him is his freedom, we have until 2:30pm Friday. If you can help, contact Kim @ 314-337-7829.”

On Facebook, Kim ( Kimberle Anne Young) commented on Bradford's ordeal. She said "I'm tired of the courts coming down on good fathers, like it don't matter that he takes care of all his kids, and he's been there for them, why and when do we allow a good father to be a good father, and not allow the courts to be able to change that! I'm going to start a supportgroup for men that go through this beca...use believe it or not, we are finding another way for our brothers to get lost in the system! sleep on that! if you aint trying to help keep your comments to yourself this aint the time for all that! we trying to get him out now that's what needs to happen ASAP! Donate to the cause, because you never know when it will be your own!"
Well we hope he gets out at least to host his b-day party.

UPDATE:YOURS TRULY got a mentiion by Delores Shante' in Partyline this week bringing back my now infamous white mesh tank short sleeved hoodie I wore last summer for the Superjam concert at Verizon Wireless Ampitheater. Teh clothing item I wore was reffered to as teh peiece fo clothing she wished she wore to keep cool in the sauna-felt atmosphere at Kyjuan's bday event at Karma last Friday.
Here is what she had to say in Partyline, " Folks had that “Good Lawd it’s Hot” look frozen on their faces as soon as they busted up in there, but they cared enough to commit to kickin’ it regardless of the heat index. I’ll see you next year “Ky-Weezy even if I have to borrow Maat’s mesh Super Jam outfit to beat the heat. What? He knows that I don’t mean anything by it!
Its all good. And as I always say, any publicity is good publicity and thanks Delores for keeping my mesh hoodie alive! LOL

YOURS TRULY was a guest on the Jon Erickque Show Sunday that wa staped at Survivor Sity in Baden. I was part of the Bar Talk segment with comic CC Lovelace and beautician Toni Smalls (I hear they want me back after my hilarious comments on the topic. How Much Sex is Too Much Sex? ). Other guests on the show (who were actually interviewed) were singers Bradd Young and J Var and husband wife team comic Ms Funy and promoter Know thems.

(HINT. It wasnt Kyjuan or Murphy Lee. This rapper wa slast seen at a big event held recently honoring a "special kind" of STL performer, theri name is associated with their "skin" and they are associated with another STL rapper's camp who's company can be associated with what happens to clothing when they are ready to get laundered.)

Why did KFC create the Double Down sandwich using chicken in place of the bread? Why is Liz Taylor getting hitched for a 9th time? Why does it seem as though American Idol treats contestant Mike Lynch like the character in the Green Mile? Why does pop artist Kesha even have a career? Why did Ryan Seacrest tell Adam Lambert that his tongue was more talented his? Why does Souljah Boy have a tatt of the Illuminati on his back? Why now are folk trying to throw Oprah under the bus with gossip and tell all books? And why now we are finding out Oprah and John Tesh slept together? Why did Jim Carrey call Elin Woods a whore?
