OUT 1140--ILLI MO BITZ (May 31-June 6)

HEY OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THAT TIME AGAIN!!

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

BLACK MUSIC BITZ

June is Black Music Month  and starting this week we will highlight music artists who have made an impact on black music who were either born, born and raised  or lived in the Illinois/Missouri area.

This week we highlight jazz artist Charlie “Bird” Parker.

Born in Kansas City, Kansas, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri,Charles Parker, Jr. (August 29, 1920 – March 12, 1955), also known as Yardbird and Bird,[2] was an American jazz saxophonist and composer.

Parker began playing the saxophone at age 11, and at age 14 joined his school's band using a rented school instrument. In the late thirties Parker began to practice diligently. During this period he mastered improvisation and developed some of the ideas that led to bebop. In an interview with Paul Desmond, he said that he spent 3–4years practicing up to 15 hours a day.[6]
He played with local bands in jazz clubs around Kansas City, Missouri, where he perfected his technique. In 1938, Parker joined pianist Jay McShann's territory band.[7]  Parker made his professional recording debut with McShann's band.

In 1939 Parker moved to New York City, to pursue a career in music. In 1942 Parker left McShann's band and played with Earl Hines for one year, whose band included Dizzy Gillespie, who later played with Parker as a duo. Parker then joined a group of young musicians, such as Clark Monroe's Uptown House and Minton's Playhouse. These young iconoclasts included Gillespie, pianist Thelonious Monk, guitarist Charlie Christian, and drummer Kenny Clarke.

According to an interview Parker gave in the 1950s, one night in 1939, he was playing "Cherokee" in a jam session with guitarist William "Biddy" Fleet when he hit upon a method for developing his solos that enabled one of his main musical innovations, bebop. It was not until 1945, when the recording ban was lifted, that Parker's collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell and others had a substantial effect on the jazz world. One of their first (and greatest) small-group performances together was rediscovered and issued in 2005: a concert in New York's Town Hall on June 22, 1945. Bebop soon gained wider appeal among musicians and fans alike.
Thus, Parker acquired the nickname "Yardbird" and the shortened form, "Bird", which continued to be used for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "Bird Gets the Worm", and "Bird of Paradise."
Parker was an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat Generation, personifying the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual, rather than an entertainer.

THE BIG A&E NEWS STORY THIS WEEK  IS

President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Freedom to more than a dozen political and cultural greats Tuesday, including rocker Bob Dylan (PICTURED), astronaut John Glenn and novelist Toni Morrison.
In awarding the nation's highest civilian honor to 13 recipients, living and dead, the president took note of the overflow crowd in the East Room and said it was "a testament to how cool this group is. Everybody wanted to check 'em out."
Obama then spoke of his personal connection to a number of this year's recipients, calling them "my heroes individually."
"I know how they impacted my life," the president said. He recalled reading Morrison's "Song of Solomon" in his youth and "not just trying to figure out how to write, but also how to be and how to think."
In college days, Obama said, he listened to Dylan and recalled "my world opening up, because he captured something about this country that was so vital." Dylan's appearance drew the biggest whoops from the crowd, and he dressed for the event — sunglasses, bow tie and black suit embellished with shiny buckles and buttons.
Obama also recalled reading about union pathbreaker Dolores Huerta when he was starting out as a community organizer.
"Everybody on this stage has marked my life in profound ways," he said.

Other honorees:
—Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the first woman to hold the job.
John Paul Stevens, former Supreme Court justice.
—Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, who died in 1927.
Shimon Peres, president of Israel, who is to receive his medal at a White House dinner next month.
—John Doar, who handled civil rights cases as assistant attorney general in the 1960s.
—William Foege, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who helped lead the effort to eradicate smallpox.
—Gordon Hirabayashi, who fought the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. He died in January.
—Jan Karski, a resistance fighter against the Nazi occupation of Poland during World War II. He died in 2000.

FLOTUS Michelle Obama added a new title to her storied resume as First Lady—author. That's because Crown Publishing released her book "American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America." The book is about Michelle Obama's creation of the White House Garden, which she started on the South Lawn soon after she and the president arrived in 2009.
According to Crown Publishing, publisher of this new book, in the past three years, the garden has produced more than 3,000 pounds of fresh produce. These fruits, vegetables, and herbs are used in a variety of ways—from White House dinners and family meals for the Obamas to donations to Miriam's Kitchen, an organization that helps homeless individuals in the Washington, D.C. area.

In more FLOTUS newz, The First Lady and her daughters Sasha and Malia made the trip to Atlantic City over the weekend to catch one of the singer’s shows, and during a later appearance on “Good Morning America,” she praised Bey, telling Robin Roberts, “Anybody who’s got talent, I’m all for.”
“Beyoncé has just been a tremendous supporter of ‘Let’s Move!’ Without asking, she reformulated ['Get Me Bodied'] to do a flash mob for kids across this country,” the FLOTUS continued, referring to her campaign to fight childhood obesity. “Beyoncé stepped up in a way that so many of our celebrities and athletes are stepping up on behalf of this issue, so I love her to death and was glad to be out there moving my body with her,” said Obama.
During an interview in People earlier this month, where she promoted her new book, the First Lady also admitted that if she had to be one other person in the world, it would be B. “If I had some gift, I’d be Beyoncé,” she said. “I’d be some great singer.”
In April Bey penned a note to the FLOTUS on her website, writing, “I am proud to have my daughter grow up in a world where she has people like you to look up to.”
What would have put this show over the top would have been if FLOTUS joined Bey on stage for a dance camp of “Crazy In Love-oh-oh“ or Single Ladies.” LOL

And in even more FLOTUS newz, Michelle Obama stopped by "The Daily Show" Tuesday night, not only to promote her new book on gardening and eating right, but to chat candidly with Jon Stewart about everything from her husband’s college years to how much she loves Vice President Joe Biden.

Amidst all the jokes about making our children eat their vegetables, Stewart
asked a few questions about the Obamas as a couple, especially about how they met.

After all the media reports of President Barack Obama’s wily college years, Stewart asked the first lady about what he was like when she met the guy that would later become president.
“I think when he lost his father that was one of those click-in moments,” she said, “I think he transferred schools, went to Columbia and that's when he got really serious about thinking about how would he use his life to the fullest.”

They even got into the would-be elephant in the room between the happy couple -- the fact that the first lady has a higher approval rating than her husband. “In just marital relationships, in just arguing… how do you not use that (against him)?” Stewart laughed.
But Obama said, "I don't wield it over him." After all, she’s seen first-hand what it takes to be a president -- and her husband gets all of the hard judgment calls.

“And is it hard to raise a kid around Biden?” Stewart laughed, referring to how loose the vice president has been known to be with his language at times. “He's the uncle that comes over and you're like 'oh you brought them guns'”
Mrs. Obama laughed, but maintains that she loves “uncle” Joe Biden. “No, he's a great vice-president and a great friend. My kids hang around him, and I'm good with it. “

FLOTUS we must say is a class act and knows how to handle any question given (even if they are prepared).  But Biden is seen as an uncle? Hmm.

Media diva Kim Kardashian is rumored to have kept current beau, Kanye West on a tight leash during his London stop of the Watch The Throne tour. UK’s The Sun is reporting that Kim was not too happy to hear that singer Rihanna would be at the show, and allegedly ordered that she stay away from Kanye’s dressing room.

It is said that Kim is well aware of Rihanna’s flirtatious reputation and was even more cautious because she was recently spotted out with Kim’s brother Rob Kardashian in February. Rumors are also buzzing that Rihanna isn’t the only girl Kim wants to keep away. While in London she supposedly ordered Kanye to leave a party after he was giving more attention to his fans. The rumor mill never stops churning!

Is Kim K serious? This is from someone who got famous having sex with Ray J on video for all of her fellow suitors since then to see her getting banged out  We woulda thought she woulda been down for that ménage! We are sure Ye would have been down for that! LOL

In other Ye news, he and  Jay Z’s new music video "No Church in the Wild"  doesn’t have them in it.  In the Romain Gavras-directed clip,  which was released online Tuesday (May 29) Gavras depicts a power struggle familiar to people all across the globe, whether in Los Angeles in 1992 or London in 2011.
The gritty violence and social commentary are reminiscent of Gavras' video for M.I.A.'s "Born Free." Though "No Church" isn't as graphic (there's no nudity or massive death scenes), it is moving all the same.
By the end of the five-minute video, the freedom fighters seem to have notched a victory of some sort, standing in triumph in the face of their oppressors.

THE BIG A&E STL NEWS STORY IS:

The Mizzou baseball team, which grabbed an unlikely berth in the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big 12 tournament Sunday, will head to Tucson, Ariz., for the regional there, which starts Friday.

The Tigers (32-26), the fourth seed among four teams in the regional, will face host Arizona in its opening game at 10 p.m. (St. Louis time) Friday. Arizona (38-17) is ranked 13th in the nation by Baseball America this week. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

The other national seeds, in order, are: UCLA, Florida State, Baylor, Oregon, North Carolina, LSU and two-time defending College World Series champion South Carolina.

Looks like Mizzou is going out with a bang before they switch to the SEC in July.

There are rumors that St. Louis Rams’ Head Coach Jeff Fisher may bring one of his former teammates from the Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth  to the Rams.

New radio personality at Z 107.7CLEAR CHANNEL  Top 40 KSLZ (Z107-7 FM)/ST, LOUIS have added the syndicated BOBBY BONES Show to mornings, that began TUESDAY, MAY 29th. BONES, LUNCHBOX and AMY will air live weekdays from 5-9a ET.
"Z107-7 has been one of my favorite radio stations for years, so I can’t begin to explain how excited I am to be heard in ST. LOUIS," BONES said.  "I spent a lot of my youth there, and am looking forward to being back in the city and teaming up with TOMMY AUSTIN again."

The show replaces The MJ Morning Show that went off the air in April.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ADD:  According to the stltoday.com, Businesses in downtown’s Washington Avenue entertainment district reportedly asked for more police presence, so the department will respond in coming weeks with a circling helicopter, a command truck parked in the middle of things and extra officers on the street. From reports, most problems are traffic congestion, intoxication and public urination during the weekend.. One of the first strategies tested will be reportedly shutting Washington Avenue to vehicle traffic between 10th and 14th streets 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

We are sure this will cause much controversy with party goers during those times and in that area of street where the hub of nightlife takes place.

ADD: Speaking of nightclubs and city protests, the owner of the former Lure Nightclub, Aprille Trupiano, who is currently co-host of STL Presents with former Fox 2 Sports personality Rob Desir on STL TV,  got a ruling from the courts in favor of them not having their license revokes due to a two year battele with  petitions from residents of loud noise and violence outsid eteh clubs. It sowner,
In 2010, the city’s exise commissioner rule din favor of the petitioners to revoke her license, but her attorney appealed to the Circuit Court soon after and it reversed the city’s decision in early May due to technicalities on how the signatures on the petitions were submitted (eg electronically by Rivergate Holdings, LLC, and six representing homeowners associations – should not have counted which counted more than once)

However Lure, which is now called Club Amnesia, is on the heels of another lawsuit this time file dby the city commissions office to revoke her license on the same grounds of the city residents two years ago.

It was reported that the Trupino Family just wants to work with the city and get this issue settled.

So the question is, why is the city trying to get them shut down? Is there more to the story? Is there sum type other stuff goin on with the owners of Lure, now Club Amnesia, is dealing with the city ? Sounds very suspect if you ask us.

ADD: According to stltoday.com, The business mogul brothers Mike and Steve Roberts are putting various properties up for sale to pay off their millions of debt. One major property is Roberts Tower in downtown St. Louis, which went up for sale this week.

Also on the market are the Roberts Lofts on the Plaza, an apartment building a block west of the tower, and the Roberts Place Lofts, a former school renovated as apartments on Enright Avenue in the Visitation Park neighborhood.

Sale of the buildings would reportedly mark the brothers' departure from big-scale residential real estate in St. Louis. The brothers  reportedly spent about $50 million to build the tower and had projected an additional $20 million to complete the luxury condos.

The Roberts Mayfair Hotel.and the nearby Roberts Orpheum theater, also owned by the brothers, are reportedly not currently for sale.

In an interview with the Post-Dispatch in April, the brothers said they would overcome setbacks in their various businesses, which include hotel and broadcasting interests. After decades of business success, the brothers lately have been beset by contractors' complaints of unpaid bills, hotel bankruptcies and lawsuits over fees owed for televisionprograms.

Wow, talk about taking a hard fall. It must be quite embarrassing to have to sell most of the properties they had vested interest in, but not paying the loans from each one is a stressful situation. Hope the brothers are able to salvage their brand and image because this looks very dooming.

According to the stltoday.com., The Jumpin Jupiter owner Jim Callahan wants to put rumors to rest that the Maplewood venue at 7376 Manchester Road is in trouble.

On Callahan's Facebook page, he wrote:

"For those who are spreading (rumors), the Jumpin Jupiter is fine. We are not being evicted. We are planning on getting show producers from around the country to plug in a variety of shows. Changing the menu. Cutting costs. Paying off all accounts payable, etc. We are building (strategic) partnerships with other companies. Out sourcing and all will be announced when it can be. It just takes a minute We are not closing. We are going to be here for a long time."

Hmm we guess outsourcing is the new buzz word for settling debts before eviction.
