OUT 1104--ILLI MO BITZ (MARCH 1-7)

HEY OUTTOWNERS!

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!!

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

WOMEN HISTORY MONTH BITZ

March is Womens History Month. OUTTOWN will highlight women from the Illinois and Missouri area who has made significant feats in the fields of arts and entertainment.

This week we feature journalist, Lucile Harris Bluford

Lucile Bluford was a well-respected editor and publisher of the Kansas City Call, an important African American weekly newspaper. She was also a brave and persistent civil rights activist. In both her personal life and her career, she refused to remain quiet about racial injustice.

Born on July 1, 1911, in Salisbury, North Carolina, she moved with her family to Kansas City when she was seven years old. At age 13, she started Lincoln High School, where her father taught

Lucile Bluford began her journalism career in Atlanta, where she was a reporter for the Daily World, an African American newspaper. Returning home, she worked at the the Kansas City American and then at the Kansas City Call, both African American-owned newspapers.

In 1939, Bluford applied to the University of Missouri School of Journalism to do graduate work. She was accepted into the program, but when she went to Columbia to enroll, she was turned away. University officials had not known that she was African American.

She tried eleven times to enter the University of Missouri. She filed the first of several lawsuits against the university on October 13, 1939. In 1941 the state supreme court finally ruled in Bluford’s favor. The University of Missouri had to admit her because no equal program existed at Lincoln University(The all-black university). In response, the School of Journalism closed its graduate program. It claimed that it could not operate properly because a majority of its professors and students were serving in World War II.

She became a leading voice in the civil rights movement in Kansas City and helped make the Call one of the largest and most important black newspapers in the nation. Eventually, the University of Missouri honored her. In 1984, Bluford received an Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism from theSchool of Journalism. In 1989 the university gave her an honorary doctorate.

She died in Kansas City on June 13, 2003, at the age of 91, having worked at theCall for seventy years.

THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Former Chicago resident, and current network owner and Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipient Oprah Winfrey was a guest on his post-Oscars party Sunday after the Oscar telecast for an interview in which they discussed her history with Oscar, her tweeting habits, her plans for, and how she more or less invented planking.

Winfrey also took part in a Kimmel sketch in which he pitched ideas for her OWN network, which ranged from the ridiculous (the Jimmy and Oprah Interview, in which they simultaneously chat up guests like Jennifer Aniston) to the Book Club Fight Club and Oprah Repos Favorite Things need to become real programming. Check out both the interview and the sketch below:

http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/02/27/jimmy-kimmel-oscar-movie/

The sketches were hilarious and was great TV. Plus, it was good to see Oprah be, well, human! LOL

Two ILLI MOians were among the 12 celebrities selected to be a part of Dancing With The Stars’ upcoming season. They were Chicago native and Emmy Award winning talk show host Sherri Sherpherd and Washington, Mo actor Jack Wagner (PICTURED). Others included singer Gladys Knight, tennis legend Martina Navratilova and actress Melissa Gilbert. The series kicks off its new season March 19 on ABC.

The competitors and their professional dance partners were announced Tuesday on "Good Morning America."

The Smithsonian broke ground for its 19th museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture last week in an invitation-only groundbreaking ceremony on the National Mall. President Barack Obama spoke at the ceremony. Other honored guests included First Lady Michelle Obama, former First Lady Laura Bush, and Rep. John Lewis. The ceremony took place on the museum’s five-acre site adjacent to the Washington Monument at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue N.W.

Obama, whose posters from the 2008 presidential campaign of Barack Obama, the first African-American president were donated to the musuem, said the National Museum of African American History and Culture would ensure that the sometimes difficult, often inspirational role that blacks have played will not be forgotten.

"This day has been a long time coming," Obama said, speaking under a tent erected on the National Mall at the future site.

The president called the museum, which is to open in 2015, "not just an achievement for our time, but a monument for all time." He said he hoped that it not only would preserve history but also inspire future generations, including his daughters, Sasha and Malia.

The museum, a seven-level structure with much of its exhibit space below ground, will rise between the Washington Monument and the National Museum of American History.

The construction of the museum will begin in summer 2012 and is expected to take three years.

Speaking of artifacts donated, St Louis native rock legend Chuck Berry’s candy-apple red 1973 Eldorado was given to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Chicagoan singer/actress Jennifer Hudson is on the witness list for the upcoming trial of a man accused of killing her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.

The Chicago Tribune reports, however, that prosecutors haven't yet disclosed whether Hudson will actually testify at William Balfour's trial, which is slated to begin April 9.

Balfour was the estranged husband of Hudson's sister, Julia. Hudson's mother and brother were found dead in the family's home on Chicago's South Side in 2008. Her nephew's body was found days later in a vehicle on the city's West Side.

A court filing by prosecutors last week contains detectives' reports from interviews with Hudson after the deaths. According to the filing, Hudson told investigators she'd known Balfour since childhood and had advised her sister against marrying him.

This is going to be another star studded court trial filled with real life drama. It’s going to be interesting how the media (ie Court TV,) covers this trial which looks like it will be watercooler talk for weeks to come.

In other J Hud newz, she is reportedly on a short list of singers considered to play the late Whitney Houston in an upcoming biopic. Others included Rihanna, Jordin Sparks, Brandy and Vivica Fox. The flick will be reportedly produced by her mentor record label executive Clive Davis, reports say.

According to the Daily Mail, Davis is looking to finalize a script soon.

Of those considered, J Hud may be likely—the others definitely NO. We think Kelly Rowland may be the best choice because she favors Whitney.

And in more J Hud newz, she recently wrapped up a music video for the song, “Think Like A Man” from the upcoming movie, “Act Like A Man,” that is set to air on various networks The clip was directed by Chris Robinson. It also features Neyo and Rick Ross and one of the stars of the movie, comedian Kevin Hart.

This week, a sign bearing the name of the late comedian Bernie Mac has been raised over a street in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood where he was born and raised. Reportedly, about 200 people, including his widow Rhoda McCullough, daughter Je'Niece McCullough and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, gathered on a corner near the home where he grew up.

Je'Niece told the Associated Press that she hopes renaming the street Bernie Mac Street reminds people "they can do whatever they want to do in life."

Mac, born Bernard McCullough, died in August 2008 at age 50 from pneumonia complications, after suffering from sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease.

Michael Jordan's longtime personal residence in suburban Chicago is for sale for $29 million. The sprawling estate is in Highland Park, along Lake Michigan, and has more than 56,000 square feet of living space. That includes nine bedrooms, 15 baths and five fireplaces. There's also a three-bedroom guesthouse, pool area, outdoor tennis court and three climate-controlled multi-car garages.

An indoor basketball complex features a full-size regulation court with specially cushioned hardwood flooring and competition-quality high intensity lighting. It's also got a sound system set up to provide perfect acoustics within the court space.

The property was put on the market Wednesday by Katherine Chez-Malkin of Baird & Warner Real Estate.

St. Louis’s own Devon Alexander made his welter weight debut, against Marcos Maidana last Saturday on HBO Fight Night. Alexander, 25, used his added weight to record a unanimous 10-round decision over Maidana on Saturday night. He improved to 23-1. Maidana, from Argentina, fell to 31-3 in his welterweight debut.Alexander captured nine of 10 rounds on two judges’ cards.

HBO’s hit late-night boxing franchise began a new season with this fight which had taken place at Scott Trade Center in St Louis (no info as of yet on the attendance)

The controversial St Louis based competition Battle of the Complexions that was held last Friday at a nightclub called The Venue to celebrate Black History Month made (inter)national headlines because of its connotative aspects of separating the different skin colors of women and deciding which skin color was the best resulting in the St Louis Chapter of the NAACP to step in to address the issue. It also resulted in Mack TV, the promoter, and Nelly Da Celeb the host of it, to issue a statement regarding the backlash:

"MACK TV & NELLY DA'CELEB WOULD LIKE TO CLEAR UP THE MISUNDERSTANDING OF OUR CONCEPT FOR THIS PARTY...ITS NOT TO DEGRADE WOMEN OR DIVIDE SKIN COLORS..IT'S SIMPLY TO SEE WHICH COMPLEXION OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN REPRESENTS THE MOST ( lightskinned , caramel - brown , or darkskinned )

AS A WHOLE , MALE & FEMALE!

I CAN SEE THE MISUNDERSTANDING WITH OUR PROMO.....WE COULD HAVE USED A BETTER CHOICE OF WORDS....IN NO WAY DID WE MEAN TO OFFEND THE OFFENDED...AND THERE WAS A TIME WE WERE NOT PROUD TO BE LIGHT OR DARK...WE JUS BE PROUD OF YOUR SKIN COLOR...

IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH , SO WE MADE A PARTY THEME DEDICATED TO OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN CROWD. THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS LOVING THIS PARTY BECAUSE HERE'S THE FIRST TIME EVER YOU CAN COME OUT & BE PROUD THAT YOU ARE BLACK!! REGARDLESS IF YOU'RE LIGHT-SKINNED , BROWN-SKINNED , or DARK-SKINNED , YOU'RE STILL BLACK!! SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION & MISLEADING INFO."

Having a contest on which black complexion is the best one during Black History Month is quite disturbing. In their press release they say they weren’t trying to degrade women or divide skin colors. It may not have been degrading women but it maligns women based on their skin color. And dividing women is exactly what the contest done—with the battle! They admit they could have used a better choice of words, but on a bigger picture—the concept was not well thought out. If they wanted to celebrate Black History Month for a younger club crowd they could have done a contest to see which young lady best represents blackness—PERIOD based on their beauty, their heritage and their femininity.

THE BIG STL NEWZ STORY IS:

IN OTHER STL NEWZ

The Cardinals and Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina are reportedly close to an agreement on a multi-year extension with an average annual value exceeding $10 million. The Cardinals talked with Molina’s agent Melvin Roman, who was in town last week. Molina reportedly expressed wanting to remain in St. Louis shortly after arriving in Jupiter, Fla for Spring Training last month . The catcher is in his last year of a five year deal that pays him $7 million. Team officials declined to comment regarding the status of talks except to deny a rumor that a deal was already in place.

Looks like Molina is receiving his extension without having to wait til the end of the 2012 season to go back to the table but then again, its not a over 200 million contract at stake either like his former colleague Albert Pujols.

UPDATE: The Cardinals announced Thursday the completion of a five-year extension with catcher Yadier Molina. The contract will be added to his existing contract for the 2012 season and guarantee Molina's place behind the plate through 2017. The contract includes a mutual option for 2018, and the total value of the six years would equal $88 million.

The seventh-ranked Mizzou Tigers squeaked a 78-72 victory against Iowa State Cyclones Wednesday that assured them the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 tournament next week. Mizzou is 26-4 overall and 13-3 in Big 12 action; ISU is 21-9 and 11-6. Sixth-man Michael Dixon led five Tigers in double figures with 21 points. Royce White had 20 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Cyclones before an announced crowd of reportedly 14,837 at Mizzou Arena.

St. Louis residents expressed outrage this week over a “Battle of the Complexions” contest that took place last Friday night, at The Venue in Wellston, Mo. but the event’s promoters said they organized it to honor African-American women and regretted any “misunderstanding.”

Promotional materials, including the poster, promised a contest to see which African-American women are most attractive — those with light skin, those with brown skin or those with dark skin.

“This is the most debatable topic of the year, whats the sexiest skin complexion?? So ladies come out & lets settle this!!” the promoters — Mack TV, a video and music promotional company, and a local “men’s entertainment” promoter calling himself Nelly Da’Celeb — said on a Facebook page for the event, according to msnbc.com

. Adolphus Pruitt, president of the St. Louischapter of the NAACP, said the event “raises the … hair on the back of people’s necks like me and some other folks.”

“Folks who buy into it, support it, feed into it, they’re just assuring that using race — using the skin complexion of women, devaluating women and things of this nature — is going to continue to happen, because as long as people spend money to take advantage of it, somebody’s going to use it as a promotional tool,” Pruitt told NBC station KSDK.

After the contest was highlighted this week by Kevin C. Johnson, a music writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, negative reaction was reportedly swift and loud.

Camille Houston, an African-American woman from St. Louis, told KSDK that she found the promotion offensive because it perpetuates historical divisions in the African-American community centered on skin tone.

“Some guys will say, ‘I don’t like talking to dark-skinned girls,’ or, you know, some girls will say. ‘I don’t like talking to dark-skinned guys,’” Houston said.

In a post Thursday on Nelly Da’Celeb’s (PICTURED)personal Facebook page, Mack TV and Nelly Da’Celeb said they understood why some people were upset but that the event would go on:

Following the event, Nelly Da Celeb and his fans commented on Facebook. Here are some of those comments:

Nelly DA Celeb: “So in ONE WEEK , ive ben on CHANNEL 2 , CHANNEL 4 , CHANNEL 5 , CHANNEL 11 , MSNBC , POST DISPATCH , RADIO 89.5 FM , & now MEDIATAKEOUT.COM!!! ALL THIS (( FREE PUBLICITY )) NOW I AINT JUS LOCAL NO MORE....IM A NATIONAL CELEB NOW!!! ERRBDY KNO MY NAME!!! LMAO

Sooooo im watchin news ch 5... And I see the story abt yall light vs brwn vs dark.....ppl takin it WAY to serious....naacp gettin involved.

Jazmin Looney Head Anthony

\

All the old ppl on my friendslist fussin about yo party lol the media fussin ain't doin nothin but helpin yo promo for free

.im on my way to stardom!!!

Phillip Mrbluntblog Wilburn

‎ I SALUTE YOU MY NIGGA FOR……I SEE YOU DOING YO THANG IF AINT NOBODY SHOWING LOVE THEY JUST HATING….

Bam Martin

Wow this is too much playin for real! True, the party got big promo from media, but what’s cringing is Nelly da Celeb feeling that he has arrived and has made star status based upon it. True, he’s got star status, but for how long? The spotlight comes and goes. Ego is clouding up the real issue that the event has put a negative light on the topic of which skin color is the best. And that’s not in a good light. Pun intended.

March 1 is the deadline for the ST LOUIS RAMS to approve or do a counter-proposal in response to the CVC's proposal to split the $120 million renovations of the Edward Jones Dome before the lease expires in 2015.

We will keep you posted on the outcome when it is reported.

UPDATE: The Rams organization and owner Stan Kroenke rejected the CVC’s plan and will respond with a counterproposal that the CVC will vote on. The deadline the Rams have given to the CVC is May 1. If the CVC rejects it, then the CVC has the right to take it to arbitration.

No surprise after the CVC bent over backwards to amend the lease last month on “all games must be played at home” clause to allow the Rams to leave the country and play in London We think its going to arbitration and here a decision will be made whether CVC must agree to the Rams terms or the Rams must agree to CVC’s terms and on whether the Rams will stay in or leave St Louis after the 2015 lease expiration year with that decision to be settled supposedly in December 2012.

The late Negro Leagues ambassador Buck O'Neil was inducted Monday into the Hall of Famous Missourians. A bust of the former Kansas City Monarchs first baseman, will reportedly grace the state Capitol's third-floor rotunda.

O'Neil won two batting titles during his 11 seasons with the Monarchs, a team in baseball's Negro Leagues. He was later hired as a scout by the Chicago Cubs in 1962, making him the first black in a coaching position with Major League Baseball.

After his baseball career, O'Neil raised money to build the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

He returned to Kansas City in the late 1980s as a scout for the Royals.

In 2006, O'Neil became the oldest professional baseball player in history, signing a one-day contract with a minor league team a few months before he died at the age of 94

O'Neil was unfortunately passed over for induction into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

St Joseph, Mo native and High School German teacher Patrick Quinn won the "Jeopardy!" Teachers Tournament competition this week coming away with $100,000 and a guaranteed spot on the show's "Tournament of Champions."

Quinn won with the correct answer to this clue from the category The 1960s: "On nominating this man in 1967, LBJ said 'It is the right thing to do, the right time to do it, and the right man & the right place.'"

The correct answer, formed as a question of course, was: "Who is Thurgood Marshall?" (Marshall was the first African-American Supreme Court justice.)

Quinn, of Chesterfield, entered the competition with $5,589 from the Final Jeopardy! round. That amount was combined with what he won in the finals to come up with his two-day of $22,300, enough to edge out two other teachers and claim the $100,000 prize.

The Teachers Tournament began with 15 players and was filmed in January in Culver City, Calif.

The day after the "Jeopardy" show aired this week he got a warm reception at the high school where he teaches at Ritenour High School where they reportedly held an assembly in honor of Quinn.

The St Louis Gateway Classic set for Sept 28 has been cancelled . Reportedly the annual ‘sportsfest’, that has been in existence since 1994, has been canceled this fall, due to a “ lack of interest by a community that wallows in high school sports, the Blues, and Cardinals baseball games, and even the St. Louis Rams, NFL team; and the Missouri Tigers and St. Louis University’s basketball teams are hot ticket items.” (quote from writer Gentry Trotter from his website Globe Trotter). Its CEO, Earl Wilson died in 2010 and his son, Richard Gray took over the realms the following year which resulted in the first ever doubleheader with Lincoln U v MSSU and UAPB v Clark Atlanta.
