OUT 1101--ILLI MO BITZ (FEB 16-22)

HEY OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THAT TIME AGAIN!!

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH BITZ

Author and playwright William Wells Brown was born into slavery near Lexington, Kentucky, and came to Missouri in 1816 with his master, his mother, and brothers and sisters. He served several masters and was frequently hired out until his escape in 1834. Freed from servitude, he spent years helping others escape from slavery as part of the Underground Railroad before becoming a public speaker and writer. His play The Escape; or, A Leap for Freedom (1858) is considered the first play by an African American to be published in America.

Whitney Houston’s funeral will be this Saturday at noon ET in Newark at New Hope Baptist Church, It will not be open to the media, though one pool camera will be allowed inside the church, giving fans around the world the opportunity to watch a live feed online. It will not be televised.

THE BIG A&E NEWZ STORY THIS WEEK IS:

The untimely passing of pop singer Whitney Houston has made international newz. On an ILL MO level, Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson was tapped to perform a last minute tribute to the fallen singer at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards (which saw its highest ratings since 1984 with 41 Million viewers) singing Houston’s signature song, “I Will Always Love You”

Though Hudson appeared nervous, her performance was almost universally praised.

Raising her hands and eyes to the ceiling, then clenching them shut to hit the big note near the end, Hudson genuinely appeared on the verge of tears.

There were reports that Hudson broke down sobbing in rehearsals, but she was able to remain composed throughout the performance.

Fellow Chicagoan Chaka Khan was slated to perform with Hudson on the tribute but backed out at the last minute (MORE INFO BELOW).

We think Hudson did an outstanding job. Her subdued performance was just what was needed as a sense of mourning for Houston.
++++++++++++++++++++++

In unrelated J Hud newz, a Cook County judge ruled this week that Chicago police acted properly when they arrested an estranged husband of singer Jennifer Hudson’s sister in connection with the murder of three family members in 2008. Attorneys for William Balfour had sought to quash his arrest and throw out evidence from a search, including a cell phone that detectives used to place Balfour near the victims’ home in the Englewood neighborhood. Balfour is scheduled to go on trial on April 9.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In more Grammy newz, two ILLI MOians copped awards at Sunday’s ceremony. Chicago bred rapper Kanye West, who was a no show, won four Grammies: Best Rap Song (“All of the Lights”) with Rihanna, Fergie and Kid Cudi, Rap Album (“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”), Best Rap/Sung Performance (“All of the Lights”) , Best Rap Duo/Group (“Otis” ) with Jay Z ; and Oak Park, Ill native Betty White won for Best Spoken Word Album (“If You Asked Me”)

Ye gave a reason as to why he didn’t attend the Grammies on Twitter when he tweeted “ want to take all the attention Im getting tonite and give it towards an angel that is no longer with us RIP Whitney.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Grammy Award winning singer Chaka Khan, who pulled out of a Grammy tribute to Whitney Houston just an hour before the show was scheduled to begin, was on Piers Morgan’s talk show on CNN this week in regards to the Whitney Houston’s death . There, she called record producer mogul Clive Davis' decision to go ahead with his annual pre-Grammy party in the hotel where Houston’s body was still around as "insanity."

Davis, Houston's mentor, hosts his pre-Grammy party every year and Houston had traveled to Los Angeles to attend. Only hours before the party was set to begin, Houston was found dead in the bathtub of her room at the Beverly Hills Hilton. The party went on as scheduled in the same hotel. In fact, Houston's body was still in the hotel when the first party-goers arrived.

"I thought that was complete insanity," Khan told CNN's Piers Morgan. "And knowing Whitney I don't believe that she would've said, 'The show must go on.'"

Davis had been quoted saying Houston would've wanted the celebration to go on as planned.

"She's the kind of woman who would've said, 'stop everything! I'm not going to be there.'" said Khan. "I don't know what could motivate a person to have a party in the building where the person whose life he had influenced so enormously -- and whose life has been affected by hers. I don't understand how that party went on."

Khan herself didn't attend, saying she was "paralyzed" after hearing about Houston's death.

Meanwhile, on the same episode, Khan spoke about her most cherished memories of the late Whitney Houston -- which apparently include her, Whitney and Bobby Brown getting high on drugs together.
"They're all really good [memories]. And funny ones. There was one time, me and her and Bobby were all together in a hotel, it was actually in Florida as well. And we were up there getting high together. Talking crazy and having a really, really, really good laughing, and a really, really good time,".

New York's Power 105.1's morning show The Breakfast Club covered the comments Khan made. Host Angela Yee believes that Chaka Khan was not trying to defame Houston by any means. Yee said that Khan was a close friend of Houston's and was only keeping it real about what they did. Co-host DJ Envy however was extremely disturbed and said that "we need to respect [Whitney's] death."
Khan has been upfront and honest about drug abuse within the industry and she openly admits to having been an addict herself.

Well, its nor surprising that Chaka would say that She has been known to speak her mind no holds barred. But we thought it was quite distasteful for her to bring up a drug fest as a happy memory especially after Houston had died. So, if she felt Clive Davis was insensitive on having his party in the same hotel that Houston’s body was still cooling on ice, then she was just as insensitive talking about her drug binge with Houston especially after she called Houston her little sister.

IN OTHER NEWZ:

Former Chicago native and current network owner Oprah Winfrey got in trouble Sunday for tweeting about Nielsen boxers watching OWN, EW.com reported.

"Every 1 who can please turn to OWN especially if u have a Nielsen box," she tweeted Sunday evening at the start of 'Oprah's Next Chapter' and the mega-rated Grammy telecast. She later added, "Commercial Grammy people… u can turn to OWN."

The move, which some readers have called "desperate" and "begging for viewers" received backlash from Winfrey's Twitter followers and scrutiny from Nielsen, which reports and measures viewer ratings.

Winfrey has since removed the original post and tweeted that she did so at the request of Nielsen, adding that she "intended no harm."

Because of the Twitter statement, an asterisk will be attached to OWN’s ratings at the time of day her message was sent, noting a “possible biasing effect,” a Nielsen spokesman told the New York Times.

Wow talk about Oprahgate. Is the fall starting? We don’t see anything wrong with her tweeting what she did. People have a choice to watch OWN if she tweeted it or not. Just because she tweeted it doesn’t mean folk were gonna tune in to OWN. But then again, it is Oprah whom the industry considers godlike and puts different rules for her. It was reported talk show host Jimmy Fallon did the same thing and was omitted in Nielsens ratings that particular week altogether.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

In unrelated Oprah newz, she will pay tribute to the late Whitney Houston, in a two-hour special airing on Feb. 16 Oprah’s OWN network. During the tribute special, Remembering Whitney: The Oprah Interview, Winfrey will re-air the infamous interview between the two that took place in 2009, in which Houston publicly admits to abusing drugs. Oprah.com is stating that the interview to be shown was the last sit-down interview that took place between Winfrey and Houston and was originally aired during The Oprah Winfrey Show’s 24th season. In addition, Winfrey will share memories between the two.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In more Oprah newz, Oprahs’s Oscar special aired Wednesday on OWN. The two hour primetime special featured Winfrey interviewing three of this year’s most highly lauded Academy Award® nominated actors in candid, one-on-one interviews. They were two actors from the hit film “The Help” - Viola Davis (two-time Academy Award® nominee and this year's Actress in a Leading Role nominee) and Octavia Spencer (Actress in a Supporting Role nominee) about their experiences on the film; and Jonah Hill of “Moneyball” (Actor in a Supporting Role nominee) talks about his first nomination and co-starring alongside Springfield, Mo raised actor and 2012 Oscar Actor nominee Brad Pitt.

+++++++++++++++++++++
And in more Oprah newz, she and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius are among those scheduled to join Lady Gaga at Harvard University this month for the launch of the singer’s Born This Way Foundation.The nonprofit is scheduled to be unveiled Feb. 29 at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education before policy makers, foundation leaders and youth.

The Blues are coming to the White House Feb 21 for the Obama’s series, "Red, White And Blues." The show will be taped FEBRUARY, 21st at the EAST ROOM OF THE WHITE HOUSE and will be hosted PRESIDENT and MRS. OBAMA. It is in recognition of BLACK HISTORY month. The evening will include program host TARAJI P. HENSON and performances by MICK JAGGER, B.B. KING, JEFF BECK, adopted Chicagoan BUDDY GUY, with BOOKER T. JONES as musical director and band leader. The show will honor the musical form that sprang from the MISSISSIPPI DELTA and flourished in the Westside of CHICAGO with deep roots in AFRICA and slavery. The performances will explore those roots and pay homage to the great figures of the Blues. It will air on PBS Feb 27

Affton , Mo native actor John Goodman is reteaming with his fellow TV wife Roseanne Barr for a new show. The actor was on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show Tuesday where he talked about working with his old sitcom friend and co-star Roseanne Barr again. News broke last week that he was in talks to join her on a new NBC comedy pilot "Downwardly Mobile.” Barr is set to play the owner of a trailer park, while Goodman is the handyman. Goodman said that their charters are not married and "who knows what'll happen over the years."
"Downwardly Mobile" is being looked at by NBC for the next fall season.

Hmmm, looks like Goodman and Barr and doing when Bill Cosby did and Phylicia Rashad reteamed for his CBS show, Cosby” in the 1990s after working on “The Cosby Show” on NBC in the 1980s. Lets hope magic strikes twice because they made a good TV couple and the show was excellent (except for the final episode when they became rich from the lottery LOL).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Chicago native and Bulls superstar Derrick Rose is still injured from his aching back but is reportedly moving. The handsome player missed his third straight game Tuesday because of lower back spasms when the Chicago Bulls beat the Sacramento Kings 121-115.

"I shouldn't have any problems in the long run," Rose said to the press after the first game when his injury surfaced. "This back pain should be behind me in a couple of days. I should be back out there in a couple days. I'm going to take my time and be smart."

Rose reportedly saw a back specialist on Monday who confirmed MRI that he has a muscular issue and must continue to rest and get therapy. He also saw a chiropractor to help the recovery.

Rose said he was relieved it wasn't worse and taking a pain-killing injection was discussed, but with his fear of needles, he wasn't about to take one.

The Bulls have home games coming up against the Boston Celtics on Thursday and the New Jersey Nets on Saturday.

To shore up the roster while Rose is out, the Bulls reportedly signed veteran Mike James from the D-League to a 10-day contract. The Bulls called James up from the Erie BayHawks in December when Rose suffered a toe injury.

A suburban Chicago mall made famous for its high-speed demise in "The Blues Brothers" movie 30 years ago is meeting its real-life end. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn announced Wednesday that demolition has officially begun at Dixie Square Mall in south suburban Harvey. The vacant mall has been an eyesore ever since cars unceremoniously smashed through it in the iconic film.

Quinn set aside $4 million in federal disaster recovery funds for the project in 2010. Work to clear the property had previously stopped when Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan sued Harvey over asbestos removal in 2005.

Ed Paesel, executive director of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association, said the initial investment for the project is "critical to Harvey's future."

The 39-acre site was recently condemned over concerns about its structural stability and the presence of asbestos. The governor's office said the cleanup and demolition project will support 42 jobs, including 18 new full-time positions.

The mall, which opened in 1966, closed in 1979, then shortly thereafter was featured in "The Blues Brothers."

THE BIG STL NEWZ STORY IS:

The St. Louis Rams hired the 41-year-old Les Snead as their general manager on Tuesday. Snead, who had been director of player personnel with the Atlanta Falcons the past three years, was reportedly the first candidate the team called, even before they hired coach Jeff Fisher.

Snead replaces Billy Devaney, who had been assistant GM with Atlanta before coming to St. Louis.

Snead, who spent the past 13 years with the Falcons, said at a recent press conference that there was no awkwardness during the interview process because he and Devaney did not discuss the job. Devaney reportedly sent a congratulatory text message along with a photograph from a beach on the Gulf Coast.

A St. Louis native, Lamping served Anheuser-Busch in a variety of capacities from 1981 to 1993. Grammy Award winning singer/producer Babyface sang an impromptu tribute to Whitney Houston on Saturday night, hours after the report of her passing, during a concert at Chaifetz Arena. Babayface who produced songs from Houston;s 1991 album, “I’m Your baby Tonight” and 1995’s “Waiting to Exhale “soundtrack, was reportedly emotional in his rendition of the song, “Exhale (Shoop)” that he wrote for her. Before he sang he said how sad he was on Houston’ s passing, how she reshaped the “Waiting to Exhale’ soundtrack to be an all female singer album than just a Houston album, and felt that he needed to something—so he sang “Exhale” while tearing up. Opener Kem reportedly had a video tribute of the singer on screen.
