FILM BITZ

STL filmmaker David Conley’s Internet pilot DNR is getting big viewership since its premier on VIMEO last Friday. Currently over 830 hits, Conley wants to get at least 10,000 before taking it to the networks in the fall to be picked up. Due to the overwhelming response, Conley is bringing it back. So, if you enjoyed it before, you can check it out again athttp://www.vimeo.com/user2202643
THE PLOT: DNR tells the story about a RN who faces terror from her Iraqi war bound jealous husband after he learns of her affair with her newly appointed boss who’s being investigated by the government for the hospital’s takeover by a pharmaceutical company

BOOK BITZ

St. Louis native Toriano Porter has a book out called, “The Pride of Park Avenue.” Combining cool, reflective narrative, free-flowing prose and authentic character dialogue, The Pride of Park Avenue is a collection of emotionally charged personal essays about life, loss and pain, character-driven flash fiction passages of love and betrayal, action-helmed coming of age short stories centered on the pursuit of the American Dream, painstaking, tragedy-filled poetry and insanely written gonzo blog entries that form one of the more daring works of the last quarter century.

St. Louis Minister Releases Second Book “Amazing Grace: The Storm IsPassing Over”At a time when people are losing it all and feeling hopeless, Rev. BurtonBarr encourages us with his second book, “Amazing Grace,” that the stormis indeed passing over. After being held down by a mob, while theyinjected heroin-filled needles into the veins of this young minister, atage 21; Rev. Burton Barr Jr., was not aware of the 20 year struggle that awaited him. Rev. Barr gives 22 lessons and examples of how he, through faith and prayer, was able to turn overcome hopelessness.Contact Author: Burton Barr Jr.Phone: 314-363-8679

HELP BITZ
SPOTLIGHT

Nightsociety.org is organizing its first community service event in hopes to bring to a close, a year that has been filled with moments of joy as well as moments of heart ache to those who have been most affected by the changes in our economy, employment, and more directly our communities. Until December 26th Nightsociety.org has organized a diverse group of volunteers and Saint Louis businesses to ensure that the Holiday season ahead of us is seen as a blessing, instead of a burden.
Through the weeks leading towards Thanksgiving Nightsociety.org will be spearheading a canned food drive in efforts to provide food to the less fortunate and the homeless. Donations can be made at any Nightsociety.org listed location or sponsored event. Drop off locations and events can be found on the nightsociety.org website.
All types of canned food donations will be greatly appreciated and no quantity will be seen as too small or too big. The donations will be gathered and delivered to various homeless shelters and food banks in the Saint Louis Metropolitan area.Along with canned goods we will also accept blankets and clothing to provide those in need the necessities required to make it through the predicted cold season.
If you need a reason to get involved this holiday season here is some sample data compiled by the Covenant House of Missouri.28% of homeless youth will spend at least some time in places such as cars, abandoned buildings, on the streets or other public places. (1) Society pays an enormous price for failing to help high-risk youth. According to Vanderbilt Professor Mark Cohen, that cost is $1.7 – $2.3 million PER CHILD. In preparation we are calling on all volunteers and business. This is a time where community outreach and involvement becomes essential for the positive growth of Saint Louis as a whole. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to inquire about becoming a drop off location please email us at info@nightsociety.org, or by contacting kennya@nightsociety.org.

St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society – a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, recognize, and promote the R&B heritage of the St. Louis region. Founded by local businessman, entrepreneur, and longtime civic leader Reginald D. Dickson(and the owner of the favorite pre-theater dining restaurant, Reggie’s Backstage, located directly across the street from the Fox Theatre in Grand Center.), the Society’s vision is to be St. Louis’ preeminent organization for R&B performances, education, and preservation activities.
It also aims to increase the community’s knowledge and appreciation of the major role played by St. Louis in the advancement of R&B music. To fulfill its vision, the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society will establish a performance venue for local and nationally-recognized R&B artists. It will also develop programs to educate individuals – young and old – about R&B.
The Society also has future plans to develop a museum to archive and document the history of R&B and its existence in St. Louis, which was a locus for the musical form throughout the mid 1900s.At the helm of the Society is executive director Cornelius Washington, who holds 20 years experience working with non-profit organizations in the Midwest in program management and fund raising. The finished product will be a space that operates both as a performance venue for the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society as well as a fully functional restaurant.
The Society, as a non-profit organization with its own board of directors, will operate independent of Reggie’s Backstage. For additional information or to schedule an interview, please contact Sarah Thompson at 314.898.8388 or sarahtproductions@gmail.com.....................

KMJM personality Tammi Holland sent OUTTOWN an uplifting email from dress collector Tracie Ousley. It reads:There have been a lot of parents that have lost their jobs and have daughters that may not be able to participate in a day that you can never get back, their senior prom. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking,” what can I do to make a difference.” As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. “I can start a collection and give back to the community.” So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea. So here we are.Let’s make a difference in a young lady’s life.Ousley, a Vashon High School Alumni Lounge Is sponsoring a Prom Dress Collection & Sell-A-Thon to raise funds for a 2009 graduating senior. Please go to this link to download flyer with additional informationhttp://www.workshop.scbcreative.com/

OUT (ON THE TOWN) 727--BUD LIGHT presents THE FOXXHOLE RADIO SHOW @EXO /HOPE FLOOD@ STLHOUSE OF COMEDY 11/21/09

Photos by Ma'atology
The emblem of the show on the table. The Sirrius Radio Show Foxxhole and all of its cohorts came to the STL (except for its creator, comis/actor Jamie Foxx who did a via satellite greeting) broadcast its raunchy show live last Saturday at Exo Nightclub.

RIGHT: Before the show, Foxxhole co-host and comic Lewis Dix warmed up the crowd as well gave the housekeeping duties for the show.

Foxxhole co-host Claudia Jordan.

Co-host Poetess waves to fans coming down to the table

Co-host Johnny Mack.

The Foxxhole personalities: Jordan, TDP, Speedy, Poetess, Dix and Mack.

Audience member Nicole asked a question for Dix which was, " How often do you masturbate?"

Dix, who said he has been celibate for three years (and who was constantly ribbed by his cohorts who named his hand, "Handcock" ) , explained his routine to Nicole.

Some of the audience members

The first guest was businessman/socialite Mike Roberts Jr. who's VP of business development for the Roberts Hotel Corporation. On the show, he talked about his family legacy and the business projects of his father and uncle, Mike and Steve Roberts. He also said that he was engaged and the Roberts Brothers' upcoming project which will be Condominium Towers that will be connected next to their Roberts Mayfair Hotel in downtown St. Louis. Most of the cohorts also ribbed Roberts for his light skin.

Next up was St. Lunatics' Kyjuan and Murphy Lee who talked about how they got in the hip-hop game using Nelly to go solo, Murphy Lee departing Universal records and producing his own label (UC ME Label), his upcoming project "Free" thats coming up Dec. 16 (The show played his new single, "Age 21" during a commercial break) which is produced through UC Me Films, Kyjuan new film division of the company. A heated moment occurred when a debate surfaced on whether Nelly's "Tipdrill" had negative images of females. Murph said that he saw women in Africa with less clothes and shook more than the women who were on the video. Dix chimed in and said for Murph not to mix indigenous culture with the video. "There are no credit cards in Africa," Dix said referring to the infamous credit card scene in the video when Nelly slid a credit card in the crack of a woman's ass. Kyjuan said. "Those same women can make 15 grand just cuz they were in the video."

Kyjuan and Murph took pics with fans after their interview (The lady on the right got ribbed by the male cohorts of the show for her self-made dress saying, if she made it in the dark.LOL)

Foxxhole's Jamie Foxx was seen via satellite on the screen at Exo. He told the crowd that he was at an undisclosed location in Miami writing out the script for the upcoming "Ugly Wanda and Sheneneh" film.

Foxx was being is usual wacky self

As you can see!

During his antics, Foxx answered questions from the crowd and talked about how we should support Obama, using all the social networks to promote oneself as a musician, and his upcoming CD coming Valentines Day 2010 and gave a shout out to the Lunatics (He said hello to Nelly who was not at Exo) and did the Hollywood patter saying he wanted the Lunatics to do a track on his upcoming CD. Foxx stayed on satellite for about 20 minutes.

The Rose Woman dropped by to give the Foxxhole guests a rose.

Note: Overall it was cool to see the Foxxhole do their thang live but it was a bit disappointing that Jamie Foxx was not going to be in attendance which we found out when he was on via satellite.

LATER ON THAT NITE:

OUTTOWN checked out comedian Hope Flood at the St. Louis House of Comedy who had the crowd in stitches about her weight and complicated relationships. She also played "Miss Cleo" predicting the outcome of the relationships of the audience members by asking for their zodiac signs.

OUT(ON THE TOWN) 726--TANK/GINUWINE@AMBASSADOR--11/19 and CAFE SOUL@the LOFT--11/20

Photos by Hot Rod

Here's pics from the Tank/Ginuwine concert.

NOTE: We heard that the the ladies came out strong for the two heartthrobs of R&B last Thursday. As far as the performances, we heard that Tank did his thang making the ladies swoon, but Ginuwine, however, only sang a few songs, then had his background singers sing a medley of most of his hits. According to a source, both guys were gettin their "sauce" on hard backstage and we guess G-wine outsauced them both cuz he came on second. Hmm.

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!
ITS WEDNESDAY--
TIME TO GET TOWNED!

The big newz story in the ILLI and MO was Grammy Award winning R&B singer Ron Isley was released from Dismus, a half-way house in on Cote Brilliante St. Louis recently after getting shipped there after getting an early release of his three year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution at Terre Haute, Indiana, for tax evasion.

It also was announced last week on the Tom Joyner Morning Show that he was booked on his next Fantastic Voyage Crusie next May.

I don’t know how true this was, but it was rumored that Isley's ride to leave teh spot did not show up after he was released.

Two legendary newspapers are going to the New media. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat will be revived as a website only newspaper starting December 8th.. The announcement reportedly came 23 years to the day the original newspaper printed its final issue in 1986, after 134 years in operation.

But a legal battle is brewing cuz the current publisher of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat historical newspaper has published a free publication called the St. Louis Globe Democrat for 15 years. Steve Debellis, the current owner, only holds usage of the name whereas it was reported that someone filed for trademark ownership of the name. Debe,ls want the person who filed for trademark status to cease and desist (aka. STOP)

Well, this is a no brainer. Usage does not mean ownership. It just means just that, using it. However, if one filed for trademark status, that means one owns the name. So it looks like Debeills may be S.O.L. on this one. It seems like Debeils may not want to stop receiving ad revenue for his free newspaper. What you think?

Another newspaper is getting new with media is the African American newspaper St. Louis American who just launched a page on the social networking site Facebook.

Two former African American baseball Cardinals: Lou Brock and the late Curt Flood’s estate are auctioning off memorabilia at Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory in Louisville, Ky.

Following former Cardinals Bob Gibson’s lead earlier this year. Brock is auditioning nearly 100 items including a 1967 World Championship ring and the base he stole to break Ty Cobb's all-time stolen bases record. Brock is reportedly not having the items auctioned because of any financial need. Also, Brock is keeping several more items that are particularly meaningful to him. Brock signed with Legendary Auctions after Gibson's sale in July with the same company netted more than $500,000.
The Flood items include his first Gold Glove from 1963, his 1964 World Series ring; and a framed portrait of Gibson done by Flood, an accomplished artist. But there is also an autographed copy of the 1972 U.S. Supreme Court sports player trading decision on Flood vs. Bowie Kuhn.

The auction ends November 18.

St. Louis rap/mogul Nelly recently had a bootylicious b-day party that had many strippers on site thrown by his buddy producer Jermaine Dupri. It was not known where the party was taken place. Nelly was seen in tipdrill mode throwing dollaz and getting his freak on with the strippers.

In an unrelated Nelly newz, we got word that the Nellster was seen doing biz with a white gentleman Tuesday and breaking bread at a restaurant near the Galleria in Clayton. Folk were shocked that the superstar was there gettin there stares on but he took it all in stride and proceeded to his busines smeeting. Hmm, wonder what biz he was negotiating?

Nelly’s St. Lunatic colleague Murphy Lee is currently in Orlando, Florida filming the video for his single, Da Come Up.” Off his DVD/”I’M free” CD that can be purchased at Best Buy starting Dec, 16. It will be directed by STL videographer Dana Christian.

OUTTOWN EXCLUSIVE
Singer and CafĂ© Soul host.co-promoter Coco Soul pulled out at the last minute at the Show Me Entertainment’s Best of the Best concert last Sunday at the Ambassador (SEE OUT 723 for PICS) . A showcase that featured some of the STL’s fast rising artists including Nikko Smith, Aloha Mi-sho, Bradd Young and Mo Tre to name a few. Soul, who was there at the event decided not to perform. It was not clear as to the reason to why she did not perform but from a source at the event it was speculated that Soul may have felt she “did not fit in” with the rest of the scheduled performers. Hmm, wonder that was all about? We did see her backstage at the venue and she said, "I'm not performing, yawl." And that was all that was said.... .And speaking of CafĂ© soul, the monthly R&B showcase CafĂ© Soul has moved from the last Thursdays of the month to the last Fridays at the Loft starting this Friday.
UPDATE: We got a chance to speak to the source herself at Cafe Soul and she said that the reason why she backed out of the Best of the Best was because she saw that time was running out for the acts and cuz Nikko Smith was the headliner, she decided not to perform and give time for everyone else. Well, that was commendable on her part, but there were a lot of disappointed fans in the crowd when it was discovered she was not performing fa sho!

IN THE MIA FILE. Where is socialite Michelle Robinson?

BLIND BITZ. Which socialite was caught getting their “ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZs” on in a chair up in Exo Nightclub last Saturday? (Hint. It’s a male, self employed working with computer technology for businesses in the STL and part of his last name is part of his company and his while last name the same as the last name of a female icon in rock and roll)

STL-ICIOUS. Who's HOT this week in the STL? Singer/promoter Coco Soul and former 100.3 the Beat radio personality Dwight Stone.

Coco Soul. A repeated lister here, Soul got the week started on her shocking deicison at the last minute to not perform at the Show ME Entertainment's Best of the Best Showcase this past Sunday at the Ambassador, but will make up for it with two appearances this week. This Friday, she will host her monthly showcase event Cafe Soul (that was moved from last Thursdays) at the Loft Nightclub on 3112 Olive (SEE ONGOING BITZ SECTION OF BLOG FOR MORE INFO) and on Saturday, will perform along with her band, Soul Alliance at the charity event Zootini at the St. Louis Zoo’s Living World (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW)

Dwight Stone. This popular socilaite who was formerly a longtime radio personality of the now defiunct 100.3 the Beat is moving straight ahead with his newly formed weekly events at Body Christian Club on 1624 Delmar. Under his membership with the group Young, Fly and Saved (which also includes rapper P Dub) he is promoting this Friday a mix tape CD release party and this Saturday, he is spearheading a talent showcase entitled, Saturday Night Live. At both events he serves as the house dee-jay. (SEE ONGOING BITZ SECTION OF BLOG AND EVENT BITZ BELOW)

????????????WORDZ TO THE WHYZ???????????????????????????
If this is the case, why wasnt Ron Isley's ride waiting on him to be picked up from the half house after his release? Why are people in such in arms with President Obama's deicison to have the 9/11 trial in NYC? And why are the media going beserk over the Prez's 'bowing' to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia? Why did that mother sell her now dead young child into prositutuion? Why does WESL radio host Charlie Tna always says over the radio that he wants a woman to buy him a fish sandwich? And why does WESL radio co-host Prisoner always ends by saying, "Hello to Mrs. Olga wherever you are?" Why do STL party people come out to clubs late and then try to stay until the security people make them leave when the club closes? Why did Coco Soul decide not to perform at Best of the Best Showcase at the Ambassador? And why did some car jackers recently try and steal a car unsuccessfully three times after getting shooed away by the cops on Miami in North St. Louis?

BOOK BITZ

HELP BITZ

NEW: Nightsociety.org is organizing its first community service event in hopes to bring to a close, a year that has been filled with moments of joy as well as moments of heart ache to those who have been most affected by the changes in our economy, employment, and more directly our communities.Starting November 1st- December 26th Nightsociety.org has organized a diverse group of volunteers and Saint Louis businesses to ensure that the Holiday season ahead of us is seen as a blessing, instead of a burden.

Through the weeks leading towards Thanksgiving Nightsociety.org will be spearheading a canned food drive in efforts to provide food to the less fortunate and the homeless. Donations can be made at any Nightsociety.org listed location or sponsored event. Drop off locations and events can be found on the nightsociety.org website beginning November 1st. All types of canned food donations will be greatly appreciated and no quantity will be seen as too small or too big. The donations will be gathered and delivered to various homeless shelters and food banks in the Saint Louis Metropolitan area.

Along with canned goods we will also accept blankets and clothing to provide those in need the necessities required to make it through the predicted cold season. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to inquire about becoming a drop off location please email us at info@nightsociety.org, or by contacting
kennya@nightsociety.org.

Louis, which was a locus for the musical form throughout the mid 1900s.

At the helm of the Society is executive director Cornelius Washington, who holds 20 years experience working with non-profit organizations in the Midwest in program management and fund raising. The finished product will be a space that operates both as a performance venue for the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society as well as a fully functional restaurant. The Society, as a non-profit organization with its own board of directors, will operate independent of Reggie’s Backstage. OUT 722-PRECIOUS REVIEW--11/14

The movie poster for the film, "Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire"

Comedian/actress Monique shines as the monster mom, Mary.

Newcomer actress Gaby Sibidie plays the lead character.

'Precious' uses humor to tell hardening family drama

(RATING: 4 **** out of 4 stars)

Set in 1987 the film, like the book, tells the story about a portly, illiterate teen, Precious (played by newcomer Gaby Sibidie) who's pregnant with her second child from by her father and is on the verge of getting kicked out of junior high school.

During her struggles, Precious lives with her mental and physically abusive mother Mary (played by comedian Monique) and is saved by her alternative school teacher Ms Rain (played by Paula Patton).

Sibidie and actress Paula Patton as the sympathetic teacher Ms. Rain.

Directed by critically acclaimed director Lee Daniels ("Monster's Ball"), this film adaptation of poet Sapphiries' 1997 novel, "Push," is uncompromising, horrifying and deliciously and brutally honest in regards totopics: illiteracy, poverty, and incest. At the heart of the film is its protagonist Precious played by Sibidie who's somewhat akin to the masochistic Celie of "Color Purple" and ending up hopeful of their future.

The dramatic scenes come from the abusive scenes from Sibidie and Monique as the cantankerous and villainous mother. The fantasy scenes of Precious wishing she was a star, a blonde, had a light skinned boyfriend and white works effectively to tell her story of one who wished they were in another existence beside her poor and black world. There are also a few scenes that are shocking to see on screen that will pull out every emotional fiber of your viewing of them.

A hospital scene with pop rocker Lenny Kravitz as her caregiver Nurse John and Sibidie.

Pop diva Mariah Carey dowdies down as the social worker, Ms. Weiss in one of the many strong supporting roles in the film.

There are some surprisingly good performances from the singer-cum-actors Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey. Kravitz (who's mother was the late actress Roxie Roker of "Jeffersons" fame), plays the caring nurse that helps Precious during her childbirth with likability. Carey plays the "racially vague" social worker, Ms. Weiss, who's low key manner works surprisingly well with sympathetic demeanor of the film (and interestingly enough, helps make Monique's final scene of the film Oscar worthy) come from the supper. The only drawback was the inaudibility of some of the lines spoken by Sibidie who played a mush mouth at times which made it hard to follow.
Although the film took many libertes thatw ere not in the book (especially the fantasy scenes) to tell the story, this adpaation is shot as though it was part gritty documentary and part social realism as though you were peaking in their world.
Filmed in six weeks in Brookyln in mid 2008,"Precious" has won many awards at the various film festival in and out of the country (including the Toronto Film Festival) and its stars Sibidie and Monique winning many actor awards for their standout performances. It would be a travesty if Oscar doesn't fall into place with the awards from the festivals. If anything, the film will bring much needed dialogue about painful family secrets swept under the rug and forcing that rug to come off.
And thank goodness Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry (who remaned the movie "Precious" form "Push" to set off any confusion to the thriller of the same name that came out this year) who bought the promotion rights to the film (and asssited in its distrbution through Lionsgate) for this film to be seen in theatres.
In theatres now.
