OUT 693--STL TIDBITZ

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!
ITS WEDNESDAY--
TIME TO GET TOWNED!

THIS WEEK IN A&E in the ILLI AND MO:
Chicago native and First lady Michelle Obama arrived today in COPENHAGEN to lend her support to Chicago's effort to win the 2016 Olympics. She was reportedly greeted by a contingency that included Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, his wife, Maggie, Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee (PICTURED) and Chicago 2016 president Lori Healey. Mrs. Obama will spend the next two days meeting with IOC (International Olympics Committee) members, hoping to persuade them to vote for her hometown. Her husband President Barack Obama arrives this Friday, and both Obamas will be part of Chicago's final presentation. Chicago is in competition with Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo for the games.

Hey they are missing two Chicgoans that would have definitely put them on the winning side—Newly elected Hall of famer and Chicago Bulls vet Michael Jordan (who played on the Olympics Dream Team in 1992) and of course, The Big O as in Oprah.
UPDATE: The Big O was there with the contingent but it didnthelp cuz Chitown was passed up and Rio De Janeiro was voted in as the city to host the Olympics. It was also reported that various Olympic committeefolk were upset that Jordan did not come to lobby. And Anti-Obamites didnt feel the Prez should have went over to lobby.

In other sporting news, locally, The St. Louis Cardinals clinched the NL Division this week. The Boys of October clinched the NL Central crown when they beat the Rockies 6-3 Saturday in Coors Field. The Cardinals, the first major-league team to win its division, are headed back to the playoffs for the first time since winning the 2006 World Series. They became the third team to secure a playoff spot, joining the New York Yankees and Los Angeles.

As the Cards celebrated, the St. Louis Rams are still struggling. They lost against the Greenbay Packers 36 to 17 at their home opener last Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome giving them worse record of the NFL season so far at 0-3. Also on Sunday, The Rams became the new Detroit Lions by losing 13 straight games (The Lions broke its 19 game losing streak Sunday by winning against the Vikings), the only team in the NFL to lose the most consecutive games. Also on that game, lead QB Marc Bulger injured his shoulder in the first quarter of the game and was carried off the grid iron. In his place was second stringer, Kyle Boller (We see he was least healthy enough to attend the annual Make-A-Wish Foundation Celebrity Server Dinner at Fleming’s Steakhouse Monday where he has hosted for four years straight). As of blog time, Bulger probably will not play in Sunday;s game against the 49ers and will be sidelined a few weeks.

UPDATE: It was reported Thursday that Bulger may play in the 49ers game.
UPDATE 2: On Game Day Sunday, Marc Bulger did not play.

In related Rams post modem, several players have either been injured on the DL list and/or suspended for violating policies. Leading wide receiver
Laurent Robinson is out for the season with multiple injuries to his right leg, safety James Butler might miss a month with a sprained left knee. And, linebacker David Vobora who suffered a concussion in Sunday’s game and got an analysis Tuesday that has not been disclosed, but apparently more than one analysis has gotten him suspended without pay(90 grand) for the next four games for violating its policy on performance enhancing substances. He claims that there was a “taint” in his workout supplement. Hmm. Vobora's suspension began immediately.

He can return to the active roster Oct. 26.

So the question now is, will he get Barry Bonded for his actions or do like Mark McGwire did and just deny ish that was done in the past? ?

In other football newz, about 10,000 football fans watched Tuskegee beat Kentucky State 35 - 28 in Overtime at the 16th Annual Gateway Classic Game held Saturday at the Edward Jones Dome. Surprisingly, the winning team’s band also won (Classic’s wisdom has always been that the losing team wins the band competition to even out the score. ). Wow, only 10,000 attended? Not good. As compared to three times that number last year, 10,000 is barely filling one side of the Dome (which can fill up to 70,000 people) .

Let’s hope longtime Gateway Foundation CEO Earl Wilson will finally open up the talks to get new blood into this foundation. We would hate to see this STL tradition dwindle into oblivion.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Meanwhile, as the Gateway Classic was goin’ on, the nationally based Sprite Step Off came to town for African American frats and sorors to qualify in the competition. Greek Fraternity/Sorority step teams can win their share of a $1.5 million prize pool AND each participating school also wins when the Greek organization a school represents wins It took place at Ballpark Village Softball Field outside Busch Stadium. the Finals will take place in JANuary at the Atlanta Civic Center.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And in other sporting news, the St. Louis Blues are in Sweden playing their pre-season games. The St. Louis Blues won against Swedish team Linkopings HC 6-0 in their preseason finale in Sweden on Tuesday. St. Louis won its final three preseason games to wrap up exhibition play at 5-1-and-1. The Blues kick off regular season action in Stockholm, Sweden on Friday against the reigning Western Conference champion Detroit Red Wings. They play the Wings again on Saturday before returning to the Scottrade Center for their home-opener against Atlanta October 8th.

Looks like Grammy award Chi-town native rapper is in more controversy(No surprise). This week, a 30-second promo video for West and pop sensation Lady Gaga’s tour “Fame Kills” hit online showing Kanye’s supposedly hand grabbing around a nude Gaga who holds her own breasts. It is very Mandingoish. To peep it go to
http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/the-blender/the-blender/2009/09/kanye-west-lady-gaga-unveil-sexy-concert-promo-spot/
UPDATE: As of Thursday, the concert had been scrapped. The reaqson was "creative differences" among the two superstars. Rumor has it was that ticket sales had been slow. Hmmm, maybe the Ye-gate is in effect.

In other West newz, according to gossip blogger Janet Charlton is claiming that West had a “chicken fit” last Saturday night over a chicken dinner before his surprise appearance at colleague rapper, Chitown rapper Common's benefit concert in Hollywood. Apparently, when West arrived minutes before he was set to perform as the last act of the nite (which in itself is very tacky) which included Nas, Ludacris, Mos Def, De La Soul, Heavy D and Queen Latifah. West walked up to a guy and noticed him eating chicken and then busted out saying to the crowd, 'Why wasn’t I offered chicken? It’s not fair - you want me to perform for free – everyone is eating – why am I not eating?'
Well, a waiter reportedly walked up Ye and gave him a ‘my bad’ and then quipped to him, “'You didn’t ask for chicken!'

Then Ye retorted, “ Well, I’m asking now!"Well, during this spat, the celebs in the crowd was on pins and needles wondering what Kanye was going to do next as his boo model Amber Rose just stood next to him and let him go off on his tirade. So to quell matters, the waiter rushed him a plate of chicken and Kanye just took a slither of it into his grill and dumped it before hitting the stage as err body there was embarrassed as he “showed his color again.”

I’m surprised he didn’t yell out, “This chicken ain’t right. I want the best chicken of all time!.” LOL

Ye strikes again.

In other Chitown news, seminal African American based and owned publications EBONY and JET magazines are on the verge getting sold according to reports. Its former owner Johnson Publishing has been , like other businesses in the country, has been facing economic hard times. (A sign was their cancelling historic Ebony Fashion Fair show this year since its debut in 1958) Ebony, its monthly was established in 1945 and JET, its weekly, was formed in 1951.

Well, let’s hope whoever buys it still keeps it in its focus of showcasing the strides of African Americans.

Uber teen sensation Mylie Cyrus is set to perform in St. Louis Oct. 4 at the Scott Trade Center.

UPDATE: Her concert in St. Louis was postponed due to her illness with strep throat. She has been cleared of the illness and her show was rescheduled until Oct. 28. Those with "paperless" tickets for Sunday's performance can use those tickets for the new scheduled performance date. Organizers are also offering ticket refunds at point of purchase.

Two months to the day that Cyrus performing here, international Latin heartthrob singer Julio Iglesias will perform The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra presents international superstar December 4.

Granite City, Ill based country superstar Gretchen Wilson was added this week to the lineup of Farm Aid, taking place Oct. 4 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Also performing are Willie Nelson, Dave Matthews with Tim Reynolds, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Wilco, Jason Mraz, Jamey Johnson, and Phosphorescent. Also added to the lineup earlier this week was seven other acts including adopted St. Louis artist Ernie Isley & the Jam Band.
We see that Isley is the only African American lead artist to perform at this event. But our thing is, if you gonna get a black artist (and nothing is wrong with Isley) , why wasn’t former Hootie frontman Darrus Rucker added and he is kickin butt on the country charts these days?

Speaking of Isley, he and his band will perform at 9 p.m. Oct. 16 at Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room.Tickets are $10, on sale at 5 p.m. Friday at Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com, 800-745-3000, and at the venue

Our ILLI/MO based singers St. Louis’ Todd Sarvies and Chitowns Melody Angel have survived yet another week and made the Top Seven on MTV’s P Diddy’s Starmaker reality singing competition last Sunday. Sarvies and Angel performed Coldplay’s “Yellow” and an original song, “lucky’ respectively to P Diddy who cancelled the live show and used the eight contestants’ rehearsal; as their judging performance. Diddy thought Sarvies has not grown a san artist and Angel’s captivated the stage. To see all the dramatics of this episode go to

Was Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan here in St. Louis Saturday? Details were a bit unclear in regards to whether the Nation’s leader attended the Masjid Al-Tauheed mosque’s Celebrate with the Muslim Community held at Vashon School. It was reports that Farrakhan was scheduled be in St. Louis with a strict security ordeal, but the St. Louis police department’s media department didn’t give details on his visit. It was rumored that he was here last Friday for a private event but not for the Saturday event. Activist Anthony Shahid led the event on Saturday and did not conform whether Farrakhan was in attendance.
Hmm, strange indeed.

From the crew of Marty K. Casey, the production company sent an email this week to its e-listers in regards to the feedback from its production of A HOUSE DIVIDED that was recently staged last weekend at Faith Church in Earth City as well as PHAT GIRLS DON’T CRY that was staged at the Ambassador in August. The email reads: “ WE HAVE RECEIVED AN OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF PUBLIC RESPONSE TO THE PERFORMANCES THIS WEEKEND OF "A HOUSE DIVIDED" TO THE POINT THAT THE PUBLIC IS WANTING US TO BRING IT BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. ACCORDING TO MEDIA SOURCES, THERE WERE A LOT OF OTHER EVENTS THIS WEEKEND THAT CAUSED A LOT OF INDIVIDUALS TO MISS THE SHOW, AND THEY ARE REALLY WANTING US TO DO AN ENCORE PRESENTATION OF BOTH SHOWS!!! 95.5 TALKED ABOUT "A HOUSE DIVIDED" THE ENTIRE MORNING!!! IN ADDITION, WE ARE STILL RECEIVING EMAILS ALMOST TWO MONTHS LATER REGARDING THE STELLAR PERFORMANCES IN "PHAT Girls Don't Cry". We would call it "A K C Entertainment & Productions Weekend"

If you think that they should bring both back on stage, email us at maat.atkins@gmail.com and we will send your comments to them!

And speaking of radio, on terrestrial radio station WHHL 104.1 FM, sparks flew on the Demetrius Johnson Show Sunday morning as he went on a tirade against STL politician Jamilia Nasheed who’s trying on get his co-host Suite STL’s Jamie B fired because of what Nasheed claim is a city insider who blasts the city. Johnson as well as Jamie B called out Nasheed for her actions and literally called her a phony for the community. Wow. This is UGLY. We are sure we haven’t heard the last of this.

WORDZ TO THE WHYz

Why can’t the Rams get it together as a team? Why did politician Talib El-Amin risk his political career with prison time taking a bribe for 2 grand? Why is Alicia Keys being seen as a homewrecker dating her married producer Swizz Beats? (Isn’t he part of the wrecking too?) Why does it seem the show , “Desperate Housewives” has lost its edge? Why did the city wait til now to close the MLK Bridge for winter repair for two weeks starting next week especially with the Rams season and the Cards about to play in October? Why didn’t singer Letoya Luckett do a no show at Karma last Friday? Why did someone steal promoter Mocha Latte’s cell phone while she was hosting Karma’s Blackout party Sunday? Why are Lakers star Lamar Odom and reality star Khloe Kardashian gonna have a fake wedding then plan to have a second wedding? Why did comedian Sheryl Underwood get salty on the Tom Joyner Morning Show over the rumor that Rev Al Sharpton and actress LisaRaye may be dating? And lastly, why did I find out about Kevin Johnson’s b-day private party the day of the party within hours of it beginning? I thought we were tighter than that, FAM! LOL Its all good though I had a great time crashin it. LOL.

HELP BITZ

St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society – a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, recognize, and promote the R&B heritage of the St. Louis region. Founded by local businessman, entrepreneur, and longtime civic leader Reginald D. Dickson(and the owner of the favorite pre-theater dining restaurant, Reggie’s Backstage, located directly across the street from the Fox Theatre in Grand Center.), the Society’s vision is to be St. Louis’ preeminent organization for R&B performances, education, and preservation activities. It also aims to increase the community’s knowledge and appreciation of the major role played by St. Louis in the advancement of R&B music.

To fulfill its vision, the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society will establish a performance venue for local and nationally-recognized R&B artists. It will also develop programs to educate individuals – young and old – about R&B. The Society also has future plans to develop a museum to archive and document the history of R&B and its existence in St. Louis, which was a locus for the musical form throughout the mid 1900s. At the helm of the Society is executive director Cornelius Washington, who holds 20 years experience working with non-profit organizations in the Midwest in program management and fund raising.

The finished product will be a space that operates both as a performance venue for the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society as well as a fully functional restaurant. The Society, as a non-profit organization with its own board of directors, will operate independent of Reggie’s Backstage. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking,” what can I do to make a difference.” As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. “I can start a collection and give back to the community.” So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea.
