As we wind down National Poetry Month, we end with a spotlight on a ILLI MO poet who had some national attention briefly late last year with one of her epochal works--Ntozake Shange.

Shange is an American playwright, and poet.[1] As a self proclaimed black feminist, much of the content of her work addresses issues relating to race and feminism. Shange is best-known for the Obie Award-winning play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. She also wrote Betsey Brown, a novel about an African American girl who runs away from home. Among her honors and awards are fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, and a Pushcart Prize. Shange lives in Brooklyn.

Born Paulette L. Williams[3] in Trenton, New Jersey[4] when she was 8, Shange's family moved to St. Louis. When Shange was 13, she returned to New Jersey, where she completed high school. In 1971, Shange changed her name. Ntozakhe means she who has her own things (literally things that belong to her in Xhosa) and shange means he/she who walks/lives with lions (meaning the lion's Pride in Zulu).[4] In 1975, Shange moved to New York City, where in that year her first and most well-known play was produced—For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. First produced Off-Broadway, the play soon moved on to Broadway at the Booth Theater and won a number of awards, including the Obie Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and the AUDELCO Award. This play, her most famous work, was a 20-part poem that chronicled the lives of Black women in the United States. The poem was eventually made into the stage play, was then published in book form in 1977, then made into a movie in 2010 (For Colored Girls, directed by Tyler Perry). Since then, Shange has written a number of successful plays, including an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children (1980), which won an Obie Award.

THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:

President Barack Obama and his wife First Lady Michelle Obama headed to their former hometown of Chicago Wednesday to appear on one of the final episodes of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

The trip was part of a 2012 election fundraising jaunt that continued later Wednesday with travel to NYC for events.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, took turns answering Winfrey's questions during a taped interview at her studio, her first in 25 years with a sitting president and first lady who might not have gotten those jobs if not for Oprah's big endorsement in 2008.

The daytime host asked President Obama the buzzing question of why he released his birth certificate now. The president explained that in these serious times, "we can't be distracted by sideshows".

The President told the TV host that while he was dealing with the budget debate, "the biggest news was this birth certificate thing."

And so he was prompted to release the long form of his birth certificate, to put the "silliness" to rest. President Obama released a "certificate of live birth" during his 2008 race for presidency. But the so-called "birther" movement developed when critics of the now-president questioned his citizenship.

Winfrey's relationship with the Obamas dates to their days in Chicago.
She lent her credibility and celebrity status to his 2008 presidential campaign with her first political endorsement.

We are sure this interview will be one of her biggest rated shows from the finale on May 25.

In related Oprah newz, Gossip columnist Perez Hilton recently posted a clip of the show where Oprah loses her cool big time with Chicago native singer/actress Jennifer Hudson for daring to get stuck in Texas after a blizzard the day of her Oprah interview. Upon hearing the news Oprah says: “Excuse me, excuse me. What the hell is going on?! I’ve never heard of this in 25 years!”

Oprah then busts out her inner diva and starts barking orders at the executive producers of her show, while they awkwardly fumble their words trying to find a suitable response. She tells them to call the pilots and says to Eric Logan, Harpo President, “your whole day is backed up.” Yep, “your” whole day, not “ours” but only his.

Oh and she also makes sure she lets the audience know that critics have called the show “riveting” and “the ultimate treat.”

So as you see, its not nice to fuck with Mother Oprah. LOL

Watch the clip below and see for yourself…

And in more Oprah newz, Yale professor Kathryn Lofton says Oprah is a god. Well according to her new book "Oprah: The Gospel of an Icon." she is. To back up her theory, she said that she watched 1,500-plus episodes of "The Oprah Show," pored over 105 issues of O Magazine and perused numerous Book Club selections and newsletters to make the call, she told the New York Post.

She concluded that as soon as Oprah rebranded her show as what Lofton calls "Change Your Life TV," the talk-show queen became nearly spiritual. Lofton argues that Oprah preaches "The Gospel of You" with rhythmic, sermon-like speeches and ways people can be their best selves.

It worked so well, Lofton said, because at the beginning of a new century, viewers wanted direction and a source of change. They felt comforted by her directive that it's OK not to be perfect.

Hmmm, sounds like someone wants to be a guest on the Oprah show to promote her book. What you think? LOL

As the search continues for 12 jurors in the upcoming corruption re-trial for former Illinois governor/reality show star Rod Blago Blagojevich, U.S. District Judge James Zagel, who sat in for the first trial last April, reports that the problem is trying to find jurors who were not familiar with the first case, he does not expect opening statements to begin before Monday.

Chicago Bulls knocked off the Indiana Pacers Tuesday in the latter’s home stadium. 116-89 in Game 5 and wrapping up the first round of playoffs winning the series 4-1, as its MVP candidate Derrick Rose led the team in points. They now cturn their attention to the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they'll meet eitherAtlanta or Orlando starting with their next game on Thursday.

Speaking of Jennifer Hudson, the newly figured singer/actress retaliated on a Beyonce fan on Twitter after the fan went on the social network to comment on Hudson’s comments about her new figure.

Here’s what Jennifer originally told the UK’s Daily Mail: “I’ve love my new figure. All the fabulous clothes I can wear and get sent, I joke that I’m like a walking billboard now. But I won’t be taking my clothes off – no way at all. Beyonce and Rihanna can have that. I like to cover up more. I won’t do Playboy. Playboy can call, and wait. That’s just not me.”

Then, a Beyonce fan, named QueenBeyonce11 on Twitter, came at Jennifer, reportedly calling her a “b****.” (The user has since deleted their account)!

Jen wrote “wait what ? Who r u talking to? N what r u talking about? I’m so glad I found your tweet ! U gone make me lose my damn celebrity religion on up ass ! Don’t u ever come to me like that! Beat it! Next time know what u talking bout before u come talking shhh!!!”

She continued: “I think yal know me better thAn that. I love both beyonce n Rihanna . I hate when people try to be messy . B n ri know me better than that 2. I had to sAy something . I don’t like that kind of stuff .”

We can see what J Hud was saying. Mostly that Beyonce and Rihanna have very sexy images and they express it through their style of dress (or undressif you will) and she doesn’t see herself doing that because, in a way, she is getting comfortable in her new weight. But then again, we see the power of social networking can do to start rumors flying and Hudson saw what could have gotten started. LOL

Early Sunday morning, STL
police officer Daryl Hall was shot and killed after tryig to breakup a fight outside of the parking lot of Label Nightclub. From reports. Hall, who was off duty and was patron there, heard gunshots outside. About 2:30 a.m., Hall, reportedly left his girlfriend at The Label, at Fourth and Gratiot streets, and ran outside, spotting a man firing a handgun in an adjacent parking lot.

Witnesses told police that Hall identified himself as a police officer, pulled out his own gun and order the man to drop his weapon. The gunman refused, police said.

Gunfire erupted between Hall and the gunman, with a nightclub security guard also opening fire, according to police. When it was over, Hall had been fatally shot in the neck and arm. And the gunman, Asif Blake, of Hazelwood, was dead from gunshot wounds. Authorities recovered three guns at the scene.

Police said that shortly before the shooting, Blake and another patron were escorted from the nightclub for an altercation. The quarrel apparently continued outside. But Hall was not involved until he responded to the sound of gunshots, police said.

Hall was assigned to the police housing authority unit. He joined the force in July 2006 He is survived by his mother, stepfather and a brother, according to the Police Department. Funeral services were being finalized.

.

A co-owner of The Label, Chris Little, issued a statement noting Hall was a regular visitor at the bar.

"This tragedy has deeply hurt us as well as shed new light on the extreme issues that our community is facing each day with ignorance and crime," Little said.

This is tragic. Here we go again with people getting shot and/or killed while at a nightclub (following Club Society, Lush, Pulse and more recently Blackmins Plaza) . From our understanding, the Label has hired a PR firm and a lawyer to take care of the possible lawsuit that may happen from the families of both Hall’s and Blake’s. This doesn’t look good at all for The Label, but as of this blogging the club is still open, but as the investigation progresses, the certainty of the club’s existence could be questioned.

UPDATE: His visitation was Thursday at Austin Lane Chapel on West Florrissant and his funeral is at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 11 am and burial at St. Peters Cemetery.

He suffered a hamstring pull in his left leg Sunday while he tried to run a ground ball at Busch Stadium against the Reds. When the Cards left for Houston on Monday that the club wasn't "overly concerned" with the mild left hamstring but he tested his achy left hamstring before Tuesday's game and expressed confidence that he'll return to the lineup after a precautionary day off that day.

In related newz, Pujols, along with Matt Holliday received their Louisville Slugger, Silver Slugger Awards, last week at Busch Stadium when they were playing the Reds.

A pissing contest is happening on the AM radiowaves. KTRS radio personality McGraw Milhaven (FAR LEFT) is using the Riverfront Times to contest that he is being “mucked” by former colleague Charlie Brennan of KMOX Radio and KETC’s “Donnybrook.” Milhaven accuses Brennan of cockblocking his opportunities to get first dibs on interview certain authors , including the more recent interview with former Cards player Bill White who was promoting his book, "Uppity,” as well as barring him to be a panelist on “Donnybrook.” Milhaven, who worked with Breanna for a year in 2002 at KMOX said that he has been given sloppy seconds after KMOX and its affiliates.

There's no feud here that I know of," a somewhat surprised Brennan told DailyRFT.

"In all those cases they either canceled my show, or it got back to me that Brennan wasn't happy that they were on with me," says Milhaven.

In regards to the alleged cockblocking, Brennan said that "They're all part of the Fontbonne University/Charlie Brennan Book of the Month Club. We spend a lot of time and money promoting the event and, yes, we ask that we get to have the author on before any other local radio."

As far as Donnybrook, Brennan said "Milhaven has never asked me to be on it," says Brennan. "But the fact is, that the show is short on women and conservative voices. So when we have an absence, I try to find someone who fits that mold."

Brennan added that he was never invited to appear on the former Chalk Talkshow on Charter Cable in which McGraw regularly appeared as a guest.

Now if our ears were playing tricks on us, we thought for sure Milhaven has been on his show on KTRS recently while talking with colleague JC Cochran who follows his show wondering why he wasn’t asked to be a guest on Donnybrook AGAIN and saying that he was a guest awhile back when Martin Duggan was host and was never invited back due to his being too liberal. Hmm. Maybe we heard wrong.

At any rate, it seems as though this radio war is not going to go away anytime soon.

BLACK REP BITZ

Black Pearl Sings!

By Frank Higgins

THRU May 15

Directed by Andrea Frye Jailed in a Texas prison, AlbertaPearl” Johnson has little hope for release and even less for reconnecting with her missing daughter. That is until Susannah Mullally, a song collector on a mission to record pieces of African-American culture, overhears Pearl singing while on a visit to the prison. Through her music, Pearl has the unexpected opportunity to earn her freedom and search for her daughter. This work harnesses race relations and the rich oral history of the African-American community to build a tale that is funny, touching, and compelling.
