As we continue to highlight ILLI MO poets during National Poetry Month, we highlight poet/author/educator Quincy Troupe.

Quincy Troupe was born in St. Louis, and he’s professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego, in La Jolla, California. The son of Negro League baseball catcher Quincy Trouppe after his stint in the United States Army., he developed the passion for writing that would define his career. Upon his return to civilian life, Troupe moved to Los Angeles, where he encountered the Watts Writers Workshop and began working in a more jazz-based style. It was on a tour with the Watts group that he first began his academic life. He taught creative writing for the Watts Writers’ Movement from 1966 to 1968 and served as director of the Malcolm X Center in Los Angeles during the summers of 1969 and 1970.

Troupe become a celebrity in the academic world, winning an American Book Award for 1989's Miles, the Autobiography (written with Miles Davis) and earning numerous other accolades. In 1990, Troupe moved to the University of California, San Diego as a professor of literature, where he continued to gain acclaim, and became the founding editor of Code Magazine.

In early 2002, Troupe was named California's first Poet Laureate and took office on June 11, 2002 but soon resigned. ]

Other notable Troupe works include James Baldwin: The Legacy (1989) and Miles and Me: A Memoir of Miles Davis (2000). He also edited Giant Talk: An Anthology of Third World Writing (1975) and is a founding editor of Confrontation: A Journal of Third World Literature and American Rag. The year 2006 saw the publishing of his collaboration with self-made millionaire Chris Gardner on the latter's autobiography, The Pursuit of Happyness. The book served as the inspiration for a film of the same name later that year starring Will Smith.

Among his honors and awards are fellowships from the National Foundation for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

THE BIG STORY THIS WEEK IS:

President Obama announced his 2012 re-election bid on Monday, and much like the 2008 election, social-networking tools are front and center.

Obama's campaign Web site, barackobama.com, encourages supporters to "Get In with Facebook." Using Facebook Connect, users can pledge their support via their Facebook Wall, and encourage friends to do the same. Obama's Facebook page has about 19 million fans.

Supporters can also say they're "in" via Twitter or email.

In a Monday email, Obama said he is "focused on the job you elected me to do, and the race may not reach full speed for a year or more, [but] the work of laying the foundation for our campaign must start today."

"In the coming days, supporters like you will begin forging a new organization that we'll build together in cities and towns across the country," he continued. "And I'll need you to help shape our plan as we create a campaign that's farther reaching, more focused, and more innovative than anything we've built before."

Obama's 2008 election focused heavily on social networking, leveraging the power of Facebook and Twitter to get the word out. Opponent John McCain, meanwhile, got some heat for admitting he was not the most tech-savvy person, and running what Democrats called a "dial-up campaign."

No Republicans have formally entered the race against Obama, though potential candidates include Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty, and Michelle Bachmann, among others.

Do you think Obama will get re-elected? We think he will. It will be ruff for him when teh Grand Party brings on the muck, but we think he will prevail.

In a dramatic turnaround that seems way out of character for Charlie Sheen, the former “Two and a Half Men” star revamped his one-man show in time to garner applause from his audience in Chicago Sunday, one day after alienating “a boisterous, liquored-up capacity crowd” in Detroit that “greeted Mr. Sheen with cheers that quickly turned to boos,”

In Detroit for the first stop of his multicity tour, “My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option,” Charlie Sheen did not feel the love.

The opening night performance in Detroit on Saturday “clearly had not gone according to plan,” Mr. Scott wrote, “if there ever was a plan.” So Mr. Sheen dropped parts of the show and took questions from the audience at the Chicago Theater on Sunday.

“The show went on to its second performance in Chicago on Sunday night in front of a far friendlier crowd with a changed format that deleted some video sequences, sketches and long monologues from the Detroit show and replaced them with an interview-style format,” Reuters reported, adding that Mr. Sheen took questions from the audience and received a standing ovation that prompted him to post on Twitter, “I LOVE YOU CHICAGO! (the new Rock City!!!)”

During the Chicago show, Mr. Sheen shed some of his abrasiveness. “It was a canny shift of the show’s tone, from epic self-aggrandizement to a more casual, at times even likable, persona,” wrote Steve Johnson for The Chicago Tribune. “We will not go so far as to say ‘humble,’ because Saturday’s Sheen seemed to be lurking at Sunday’s edges, ready to return, especially for a few minutes early on when the 45-year-old actor seemed to be resisting the new stage-show format.”

One online review went so far as to say Mr. Sheen almost sounded apologetic: “If they say ‘Here’s your job back,’ I’ll go back to work.” His profane comments immediately following that statement might not persuade CBS executives to make such an overture.

Richard Roeper of The Chicago Sun-Times tried to capture the ethos of Sunday’s show. “This show, such as it was, consisted of Sheen and a gum-chewing, unfunny Joey Scoleri (Sheen’s manager and tour co-producer) onstage with a guitarist,” he wrote, adding: “but for the most part it was Sheen smoking and rambling.”

“Sheen has a limited but undeniable skill set as an actor, interpreting other people’s writing,” Mr. Roeper said. “But to command a stage in front of a large audience, you have to bring it.” Mr. Sheen did not.

What's next him to O.D. on stage? This is beyond bizarre.

Last week it was reported that the last The Oprah Winfrey Show would end at the close of its 25th season, but on Friday, Harpo Studios announced the date the last show will air. The final episode will be broadcast on May 25.

According to THR, Ms. Winfrey announced that she is relinquishing all control over the final two shows, allowing her producers and staff to plan surprises and put together the final programs without her input.

But according to Mediatakeout, the two hour show will be hosted by Tom Hanks and Will Smith. And that Beyonce, Jay Z, Rihanna and a bunch of other folk are going to be on it (SEE APPENDIX ABOVE).

This show is going to be a ratings supernova indeed--and deservedly so. We wonder if any guests form her first nationally televised show in 1986 will be there as well.

St. Louis native actor Jon Hamm(fourth from left) and rest of the cast of The Mad Men cast were left somewhat twiddling their thumbs while waiting for show runner Matthew Weiner and AMC/Lionsgate to reach a satisfying end to their fraught negotiations for their show’s return. But with the show’s production schedule suddenly pushed from a late April to late July start, (causing the show’s fifth season to be aired in early 2012) they’re all staring at an unexpected hole on the calendar. Hamm will fill some of his time on stage, in the L.A. Theatre Works production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters. The Jenny Sullivan-directed production, which also stars Hamm’s girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, runs from April 13 to 17. He can also be seen now in the new film, “Suckerpunch” and he’s got a cameo in Saturday Night Live actress Kristen Wiig’s Bridesmaids which comes out May 13.

Last week, NBC has greenlighted “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers,” a new senior citizen prank show hosted and executive-produced by the Oak Park, Ill native. Based on the award-winning Flemish series “Benidorm Bastards,” the hidden-camera comedy follows a group of elderly jokesters who “make it their mission to play pranks on unsuspecting younger people.”

Grammy Award winning Chitown rap superstar Kanye West , whos riding high at the top of the Hot 100 and R&B charts with two different singles "E.T" with Katy Perry and "All of the Lights" respectively, is flexing his fashion muscles again with the launch of a new collection of scarves inspired by the artwork for his former No. 1 platinum album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

According to WENN, the rapper hired George Condo to create five different pieces of cover art for the 2010 CD. Those paintings will serve as inspiration in the collaboration with M/M design duo Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag.

The limited edition range will be sold exclusively at the Colette boutique in Paris, France and online at MMParis.com.

West has previously completed an internship at top Italian fashion house Fendi and created shoe designs for Louis Vuitton and Nike.

Next will be Kanye underwear called--what else Kanwear. LOL

In other Ye newz, he attended Victoria Secret's VIp Swim evebnt at Club L in Los Angeles recently. From reports, he snuck in the back door to sit beside newbie swimsuit model Kate Upton. According to a New York Post source West and Upton were witnessed flirting and didn't leave separately but rather hand-in-hand through a back door an hour after meeting, to avoid paparazzi. Kate Uptown, who’s 18, made a name for herself appearing in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue earlier this year. She's a Michigan native and has modeled for Victoria Secret and Beackh Bunny swinwear.

Isnt she a bit young? We know she 18 but he is like 14 years older than she is. Whats really going on?

STL born poet/educator Dr. Maya Angelou is making newz on three events this month. First, she celebrated her 83rd b-day on April 4, on the same day that Dr. King was unfortunately assassinated. Angelou, who was good friends with King, is on record as saying that since 1968, she has been unable to celebrate her birthday because of the death of King. On a lighter note, Angelou signed a deal with Hallmark channel for a new TV show called The Soirit table,. The 13 episode series will feature the host and well-known guests sharing life stories and cooking. The show is slated for prime-time airing and is expected to be launched in early 2012.

Hmm, we are surprised, like many, that she didnt sign a deal on Oprah's OWN Network especially with them being spiritual relatives of each other.

ALSO

Maya Angelou will be honored by Chicago native Grammy Award winning rapper Common’s The Common Ground Foundation on April 16th event at The InterContinental Hotel in Chicago. In unrelated R newz, he has released details on his upcoming memoir 'Soulacoaster,' in which he will discuss his life, thoughts and secrets. "I'm writing this book as Robert, not R. Kelly," Kelly explained in a previous statement. "I will open my heart and reveal the good in my life as well as all the drama. I want to tell it like it is." 'Soulacoaster' which will be released in the fall and co-written by author David Ritz, has been described as not only a memoir but a "keepsake," which will promise to take fans on an "unforgettable intimate ride." The book will be published by journalist Tavis Smiley's company, SmileyBooks.

We wonder if the book will get into the two main controversial issues regarding the R: His brief marriage to a then 15 year old Aaliyah on 1995 and the infamous pornography trial in 2008 stemming from the case involving underage girls in 2002.

NBC will re-launch the crime spin-off "Law & Order:Los Angeles" April 11. The show has been on hiatus since December and will now debut at a new time and with a string of cast changes. "LOLA" will return with a two-hour debut and will then air on Mondays. Chicago native actor Terrence Howard's character, District Attorney Jonah Dekker, (THIRD FROM LEFT)will also now appear on the show full-time.

Former Destiny's Child singer and Rockford, Ill. native Michelle Williams, spoke to Hip Hollywood, recently about her former group mate Beyonce’s decision to leave her father’s management group to sign with her husband Jay Z’s management team.

“I don’t want it to be like I’m speaking for her but that's her father you can always get another management but you can’t get another daddy. So, I can’t wait till we all get together again.”

When asked if the girls will get together for a Destiny's Child reunion, she said it's still up in the air and mentions when everyone has settled down and has children, it could be an option.

THE BIS STL STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Mizzou's search to replace men's basketball coach Mike Anderson , who left Mizzou after five seasons on March 16 for Arkansas, where he had been an assistant for 17 years has now been filled. Monday, MU hired Miami coach Frank Haith, after Pudue coach Matt Painter rejecetd the deal last week, who has one NCAA Tournament appearance in seven seasons and a 43-69 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play - including 10-22 the last two seasons.

Critics say that Haith's numbers pale in comparison to Painter, who has taken six of his seven teams to the tournament and was stopped a game short of a third straight Sweet 16 this season ... Haith’s hiring has now lead to an outburst of media and fan criticism of the hire on the Internet late Sunday (even protestors as of this writing)

"Wow. Awfully Disappointed in the response that some Mizzou fans are giving," Mizzou guard Kim English posted on Twitter late Sunday.

Haith's key selling point is his past as a recruiter. At Miami, a source close to the committee noted, Haith graduated 21 of 22 seniors.

MU's board of curators scheduled a special meeting at 7:45 p.m. Monday by telephone for an unspecified matter that now appears likely to be related to Haith's hiring. The curators must approve a contract for Haith before the deal can be finalized.

According to the Associated Press in Miami, Haith is expected to return to the school Monday to tell the Miami players of his decision personally, then be introduced in Missouri as early as Tuesday. Haith had been in Houston at the Final Four.

On Charlie Tuna’s radio show this week on 1380 AM feels that the decision was race based to fill an African American coach with another. Hmm that's a possibility.

AND

Cardinals cleanup hitter Matt Holliday has emeregncy appendectomy surgury last Friday and as of Tuesday was running sprints and playing catch. The Cardinals declared they are optimistic enough about the left fielder's recovery that will not place him on the disabled list for now. The club will play one batter short for a few more games because it expects Holliday to be able to rejoin the lineup on a trip that starts Friday. Holliday said he was told about the decision to keep him off the DL on Tuesday, the day club management said they had to make the call.

On Opening day at Busch Stadium, 46,368 attended Thursday's game and they who witnessed a 5-3 Cardinals loss to the San Diego Padres in 11 innings — in which the home team blew a one-run lead in the ninth and allowed the go-ahead run to score on an error. Fans all wore red and congregated outside Busch Stadium hours before first pitch, and where the organist played “Here Comes the King” for 30 minutes straight while Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, Whitey Herzog and the Budweiser Clydesdales paraded past the stands at the parade prior to the game. The three-time National League MVP Albert Pujols, who's newsworthy negotiations to renew his contract fell through prior to Spring Training Feb 13, received a warm ovation when introduced before the game, and again when he came to bat in the bottom of the first inning during the season-opener against the San Diego Padres at Busch Stadium.

The cheering began as Colby Rasmus, batting in front of Pujols, legged out a triple and grew as Pujols came to bat, though most of the red-clad crowd appeared to remain seated.

It didn't help. Pujols popped up, stranding Rasmus, though Matt Holliday followed with a single to score the runner.

As of Thursday, the Cardinals lost 3-1 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon at Busch Stadium, wrapping up their season-opening homestand with a 2-4 record. To asnwer questions on teh Cardinals lackluster record so far, its skipper, Tony LaRussaLa, who reportedly vowed last year to be friendlier to the media in 2011, stalked out of his live postgame press conference after persistent questions about the offense.

"For everybody listening out there, do you think I'm being unreasonable?" La Russa said. "It's the first week of the season. I don't understand this.

So much for calm, cool, and collected. LOL

Two hip hop rappers eventz made newz for not the event but for the melees that erupted at the event. First,STL rapper Hitman Holla had a bday party at Club Escalades May 31 that erupted in a fight of several folk in the venue that stemmed from the dee-jay playing fight induced music. To see the fight, go to

Also, nat'l recording artist Webbie was scheduled to perform at BlackmonsPlaza in East St. Louis but did not get a chance to perform because of a fight that happened involving members of the crowd and the two security guards.

According to reports, a security guard was left wounded after a gun went off inside the nightclub when the fight broke out with just two security guards struggling to control the crowd . In an attempt to control the crowd, one security guard used his pistol to strike one of the guys in the fight when the gun went off striking the other guard by accident. 40 state police officers were said to have arrived on the scene afterwards, responding to calls that fights were happening both inside and outside of the club.

There was no word on what started the melee at the club. Neither Webbie or anyone in his entourage was injured during the fighting. During the melee at Blackmon's, fights broke out a two other clubs, Club Flava and The Mansion.

According to Mayor Alvin L. Parks, Blackmon's will temporarily lose its liquor license, as police investigate the incident.

We got scoop from a substantiated source, the videographer who filmed the fight who said that the fight stemmed from too many opening acts and after the last act MTE from Indy got their set cut short all hell broke loose.:”

These two instances have been on the national spotlight and the bigger picture of hip hops negative influence on nightlife and the people who frequent these areas. Overall, these venues have done a great job in curbing violence. But with these two instances along with the past ones mainly activities that occurred outside of then Lush Nightclub last year, it gives the STL area a bad name when it comes to urban clubs. In the end, the city 's money revenue suffers, life is lost and the number of places to go will be shut down.

StL native NFLer Laurence Maroney was charged this week for a drug and weapons bust in St. Louis in January -- and he's only going to face a misdemeanor. Prosecutors reportedly tagged Maroney with one count of marijuana possession -- for the arrest back in January when St. Louis PD pulled over a car and busted the former Denver Broncos player and four other people. Cops originally booked Maroney -- who's now a free agent -- for possession of a firearm, but it was later determined he had a permit to carry the gun. Maroney faces up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Internationally known televangelist Joyce Meyer submitted to a recorded deposition this week in the murder case where her former bodyguard, Christopher Coleman, is accused of strangling his family. The deposition took place at Monroe County Courthouse. Meyer made her first appearance in a public setting connected to the case since May 5, 2009, when she visited Coleman's home in Columbia, Ill., to show support the morning his wife, Sheri, and two sons were found slain.

Mario DeCicco, Sheri Coleman's brother, said he is upset that Meyer is recording a deposition in place of appearing at trial in person.

Prosecutors said Meyer, whose Joyce Meyer Ministries is based in Fenton, Mo., will not be available during Coleman's murder trial, which is scheduled to start with jury selection next week and opening statements April 25. Instead, Meyer will submit to questions from lawyers in a session to be recorded and played for jurors later.

Dan Meyer, Joyce Meyer's son and CEO of the ministry's U.S. operations, also will submit to a recorded deposition today to be shown at trial.

There were several nat'l acts who came through St. Louis recently.

Grammy Award winning pop /dance icon Janet was in town recently performing her Number Ones tour in St. Louis at the Fabulous Fox . In each city, she dedicated a No. 1 song for each city that she tours. For St. Louis, it was supposed to be the song, “Call On Me” , a duet she sang with St. Louis raised rap mogul Nelly that peaked at No. 1 on the R&B charts in 2006. But, that nite, it was strangely switched to “What Have You Done For Me Lately: according to reports. The crowd, more than likely, was not aware of the switch nor cared as long as they saw the 44 year old sex symbol who wore them out with her fully fitted black cat suit. She lip synched, sang and danced through her 20 or so No. 1 hits from “Control” to “Together Again” either in full or in part and did some scripted conversation with the crowd that reportedly felt not so warm and intimate as her concert was supposed to bring. But she did look good and she danced which is pretty much what one expects when going to her concerts. And speaking of Nelly, who he was not in attendance to perform due to being on an international tour with the St. Lunatics, “Call On Me” he sent a video of himself performing that was shown at the concert.

Grammy Award winning country artist Faith Hill and Emmy Award nominated talk show host Conan were the featured celeb guests at St Louis native sportscaster’s Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center Benefit held at the Fox. Accoridng to a report from stltoday.com, O'Brien served as the opening act, and he tailored his set just for St. Louis. He donned a Cardinals jersey he noted that Tony La Russa was in the audience, and asked him, "Why are you here? You should be mowing Albert Pujols' lawn right now." O'Brien also talked about the beauty of the Gateway Arch, but complained St. Louisans are more obsessed by the giant Amoco sign on Skinker. "Just sell it to InBev and move on," he said.

Costas found himself with time to kill when headliner Hill was late getting to the stage. So he calmly called La Russa and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith out of the audience for impromptu interviews. Costas' also did occasional updates of Final Four basketball scores When she finally showed, her hour-long set showcased her powerhouse vocals and many of her country-pop hits. Dressed in long turquoise gown and high heels, Hill seemed every bit the diva, but came off as an unpretentious one. During uptempo tunes she looked like she wanted to cut loose and dance, so she hiked up her dress and strutted as best she could. Ballads provided her set's best moments.

Grammy Award winning gospel brother-sister duo BeBe and CeCe Winans’ "Still Something Big" tour with Grammy Award winning gospel sister duo Mary Mary that aldo stopped at the Fox Theatre was reprtedly the last with his sister CeCe, played out a bit differently from the traditional setup of support band first, headliner band on last. The Winans were first, then Mary Mary was last. According to a review from Kevin Johnson of St Louis Post Dispatch, both acts shared the stage during the show’s abbreviated first half, creating a communal feel as they jumped back and forth between each others’ hits. During the show’s longer second half, the acts got the crux of the event.

At the end of "Never Thought," BeBe Winans respotedly broke down into tears as he remembered those who passed on including his brother Ron, who died in 2005. BeBe also briefly addressed his 2009 arrest for domestic assault telling the crowd he was innocent.

Johnson also said, “Though all the acts were devout in the praise and worship, the show didn’t come off as preachy. The concert never wavered from being a concert, and an uplifting one at that.”

The Game stars Pooch Hall and Hosea Chanchez were also in town to make appearances at three clubs: Exo, Flava and Posh. For Exo fans. this was a disappointment to those who were expecting Hosea Chanchez to meet and greet the fans. Not the case. He only came through more like a pit stop to the main spots Flava and Posh on the East Side of St. Louis. Come to find out, the promoter (who will be a blind item this week) agreed to an hour with Chanchez at Exo. That was not the case. Plus, as a conflict to the clubs on the East Side, Chanchez didn’t agree with taking pics with fans or the paparazzi (luckily the OUTCAM blended well with the cell phone pic takers LOL) He was there just to show up for a minute (literally) and then bounce to the East Side where he was scheduled at Club Flava to speak to the crowd and take pics. Also there was Pooch Hall who was not scheduled to be at Exo. After about 20 minutes, they let and went to the EasT Side to go to Flava and Posh where they greeted the fans, took pics and partied.

RIP BITZ. Gene Slay was a state high school wrestling champ from the near South Side who grew up to become a political power broker, successful head of a nationwide transportation business and the target of federal anti-corruption investigators.

In his heyday, he was a formidable sight at 250 pounds and 5 feet 8 inches tall. He kept a hand gripper in his Lincoln Continental and used it to keep his hands strong. He knew that a firm handshake makes a strong first impression.

Eugene P. Slay died Sunday (April 3, 2011) at his home in Ladue. He was 83 and had been recuperating from throat cancer and a broken leg.

BLACK REP BITZ

THE REAL McCOY

By Andrew Moodie

Elijah McCoy may be the greatest inventor you have never heard of. A prodigy since birth, his lifetime of study eventually led him to an invention that changed modern transportation forever, the self-lubricating steam engine. And that’s just one of the many inventions society can thank him for, as we’ll learn in this historical work making its U.S. Premiere. His personal and professional lives can be measured in equal parts triumph and tragedy as he struggles to make his way as an African-American inventor at the turn of the 19th century.
