HEY OUTTOWNERS!
IT’s THAT TIME!!
TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!
STL
native playwright/director Chrys Yvette is staging the St Louis Premiere of her
stageplay THE DATING GAME that will take place Sat. June 2 and Sun June 3 at
The Regional Arts Commission. For more info go to www.chrysyvetteproductions.com
On Thursday, July 12, OUTTOWN will spinoff to a new blog
called OUTSTAGN, giving a stage (or platform) to mover and shakers in the arts
and entertainment in the STL area (and “out of town”) by ways of interviews and
features. It also will focus on recaps and reviews of fashion and style as seen
at red carpeted, regular club events, and fashion shows. Lastly, in our theme
of stages, we will review live theater, and concerts.
It will be compiled at random.
And don’t worry, we will still have the OUTTOWN faves such as
BLIND DISHZ, BLIND PICZ, PROMOCIALITES, BDAZEs and EVENTZ that will likely post
every Thursday as UPSTAGE BITZ, but the
weekly compilations of top stories in the Midwest will be eliminated.
THE BIG A&E ILLI MO STORY THIS WEEK IS:
President Barack Obama was in Joplin , Mo this week to give the
commencement speech for 2012 graduates from Joplin High School graduates Monday.'
Monday night's graduation
ceremony was personal, with students reflecting with humor and perspective on
their tumultuous school days and one administrator leading them in a chant to
show their "Eagle pride."
Obama alluded to
students' unique struggles during his own commencement address, which was held
on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.
He referred, too, to broader challenges facing they their townsfolk to work
together, dream big and remain positive in adopting a new slogan of
"Remember. Rejoice. And rebuild."
"We need God. We
need each other. We are important to each other. And we're stronger together
than we are on our own," he said. "That's the spirit that's allowing
all of you to rebuild this city. It's the same spirit we need right now to help
rebuild America ."
The Joplin High graduates
are particularly qualified to do so, according to Obama. They have walked the
walk -- by pitching in to assist their neighbors, pursuing their education
despite the chaos around them and learning from other city citizens and total
strangers about what people can do, against the odds, when they work together.
"Some of life's
strongest bonds are the ones we forge when everything around us seems
broken," the president said. "And even though I expect some of you
will ultimately end up leaving Joplin , I'm convinced that Joplin will never leave you."
Last May 22, minutes
after 450 seniors from the same Missouri school got their
diplomas, a monster twister tore through the community. More than 161 people
were killed -- the worst death toll for such a tornado since modern
record-keeping began in 1950 -- while dozens of buildings were torn to shreds
by winds as strong as 200 mph.
One of them was Joplin High School itself, with the damage
so severe that students ended up attending classes in a vacant section of the city's
Northpark Mall.
AND
Speaking of graduation commencements, on Sunday, Oprah
Winfrey, gave the commencement speech to 550 graduates at the historically
black college for women to strive for excellence and make service the focus of
their lives. And she told them to remember the sacrifices of generations of
ancestors whose blood and hard work paved the way for their accomplishments.
“Never forget that you did not do this by yourself,” Winfrey
told the graduates and their families at Spelman’s 125thcommencement
ceremony. “You come here today trailing the breath of the ancestors and of the
angels.”
At the Georgia International Convention
Center , Winfrey cited three keys to success.
First, she urged graduates to know themselves and what they
want. “My answer is, I am God’s child,” Winfrey said.
“You must have some kind of vision for your life, even if you
don’t have a plan,” she said.
Winfrey also told graduates to find a way to serve and to
always do the right thing.
“Do the right thing, even when other people think it may not
be,” she said.
Spelman honored her with an
honorary doctorate in 1993 and on Sunday bestowed its Community. ILLI MO REALITY
In unrelated Oprah unrelated newz, she appeared on the show
that is helping give her network its ratings boost, the No. 1 docu show, “Welcome
to Sweetie Pies” that aired Saturday in her network. In the episode, she visits
the restaurant to dine with her BFF Gayle King while in town for the live taping of her Life
Class Tour in St. Louis . u
What was hilarious was when 71-year-old Sweetie Pies proprietor Miss
Robbie said, “I wanna be like Oprah when I grow up.” She is classic! LOL
The rapper walked hand in hand with Kim Kardashian at the
launch of “Cruel Summer” on Wednesday night.
The couple didn’t stop to talk to media but some of the cast
revealed what it was like to work on the art project.
Described as an “immersive seven-screen experience” - “Cruel
Summer” is a love story set in the Middle East , and is
inspired by West’s new “G.O.O.D” album.
Lebanese actress Razan Jammal says West is “an amazing
person”: “To be honest I was really, really surprised, he’s so professional. A
little shy, very calm on set, very hard working - I loved working with him.”
The film installation will now be open to the public for two
days.
Kimye seems to do no wrong when it comes to self marketing themselves which
both thrives on dearly! We are now waiting when Kim K is featured on his next
music video. Its inevitable.
In unrelated Ye newz, the 2012 BET Awards committee
announced the nominees for the gala this week and he got the most nominations with seven.
West and Jay-Z’s — “Niggaz In Paris" and "Otis" —
are up for video of the year, Best Collaboration, and Best Group (he got another nod with Big
Sean); Ye got a Video Director nod and Viewers Choice.
Other ILLI MOians that were nominated included Don Cheadle,Terrence
Howard and Common(Best Actor); and Keke Palmer (Young Stars Award)
St Louis native actor Jon Hamm made a cameo appearance on the
season finale of “Saturday Night Live” last Saturday during the cold opening of
the recurring Lawrence Welk Show sketch appearing as Italian
crooner Johnny Prosciutto, to the usual musical stylings of cast members Abby
Elliot, Nasim Pedrad, Vanessa Bayer and his “Bridesmaids” co-star Krsten Wiig during her swan song show.
ILLI MO REALITY
Chicago native and legendary singer Chaka Khan made a guest
appearance of the Season Finale of “American Idol” Wednesday singing her
anthemic song, I’m Every Woman” with the Top 12 Girls on stage.
In unrelated Chaka newz, she will perform a tribute to the late Whitney
Houston at the Apollo Theater’s upcoming gala and
Late Chicgao native TV icon, Soul
Train creator Don Cornelius will be
honored posthumously.

On “Single Ladies” without Stacey Dash
“Believe me I wish things had
worked out because I thought Stacey and I were great together. She was my age
and we were working it. It was sex-symbol to sex-symbol. But she didn’t want to
be there. I was disappointed about that. She had some issues. I’m not sure
exactly what those issues were. In the end, she and VH1 made a decision.”
Whether there were
really cat fights on the set
“Yes, there was a disagreement
over a scene. And it really wasn’t with me. It was with the director. I think
it was about 2 or 3AM and we’d been shooting all damn day. Stacey tried to argue with
the director about a line. And I’m like: ‘Girl, if you don’t say what the
director wants you to say.’ It wasn’t that serious at first, but it went there.
“It’s a bunch of women on the
set. We might all be on our d*mn period at any given point. I just wanted us to
move forward. Then the argument took on a life of its own. The show decided to
use it for publicity. They just ran with it.”
Why she’s no longer friends with Duane
Martin
“I introduced him to my ex-husband [former Turks & Caicos
Premier Michael Misick], he got buddy-buddy with him and then turned against
me. Just recently, this fool Duane up and sold a building he and I bought
awhile ago in Los Angeles , without asking…I don’t care if we’re not friends, just
don’t try to f**k me in the interim.
“When I heard about him in the middle of Will & Jada’s divorce
rumors, I tweeted: sounds familiar. He really ain’t got enough business.”
WORDZ TO THE WHYZ: Now why couldn’t
LisaRaye admit to the catfights when they were alleged? She denied it at the time
of reports and so did executive producer Queen Latifah). As far as her former All of Us co-star, Duane
Martin, that was a bit foul what he done but there were reported rumors that
Martin was in the middle of her marriage with Premier Misick (as were the
rumors between Will and Jada), and if one may remember at one of those award
shows, Lisa and Duane were presenting and she jokingly called him “Best
Supporting Actress.” And he said “Hey, hey, hey!” Hmm, seem like there was some
TUDE goin on long before the business fiasco.

THE BIG STL
NEWZ STORY IS:
ST Louis Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman (PICTURED)confirmed that he will
undergo arthroscopic surgery on his damaged right knee either Thursday or
Friday in his hometown of Houston rather than in Vail, Colo.
Berkman
reportedly returned home with his family Monday night and scheduled a
consultation with a Houston orthopedic .
He suffered a right knee injury after he caught a routine throw
from shortstop Rafael Furcal in the second inning Saturday at Dodger Stadium.
An MRI on Monday disclosed tearing of the meniscus and cartilage responsible for cushioning the knee. Berkman, a veteran of four knee operations, estimated he will be sidelined minimum of six weeks following the arthroscopic procedure while admitting that he might require a significantly more extensive procedure.
Also, another player was injured a few days later with Matt
Carpenter, who was hurt coming out of the
batter's box on a double in the first inning Tuesday. Carpenter looked in
discomfort not long after he had swung in the first inning and sent the ball
into left field at the game against The San Diego Padres . He awkwardly turned
the corner at first and cruised into second base with an easy double, but he clearly was in pain.
Manager Mike Matheny and a trainer went out to check and, just like
that, Carpenter was walking off the field with what the team was calling
"right side tightness."
Matheny labeled Carpenter day-to-day,
Carpenter is the fifth player the team has put on the DL this week,
following Jon Jay, Allen Craig, Kyle McClellan and Berkman. St. Louis has seven players on the
DL altogether.

Besides the headline grabbing Edward Jones Dome renovations
negotiations between The St Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke and The St Louis
Visitors Commission, on the grid iron, The Rams added depth to their roster
Tuesday by signing a pair of veteran free agents, linebacker Mario Haggan and
offensive tackle Barry Richardson. Both players arrived in time to watch
Tuesday's first OTA practice of the spring and participate in the following
sessions.
There was a public hearing Tuesday that brought out supporters and foes of a
proposal to move up the closing times for bars, clubs and other businesses in East St. Louis by two hours.
From reports, most of the crowd appeared to side with Mayor Alvin
Parks who said he is "100 percent against" the proposal.
The meeting drew more than 100 people to the East St. Louis Municipal Building .
City Councilwoman Emeka Jackson-Hicks reportedly proposed the
ordinance that would limit many businesses' hours of operation to between 6
a.m. and 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday
and 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. Friday through Sunday.
Businesses excluded from the ordinance would include health care providers,
casinos, day cares, nationally franchised businesses, hotels and gas stations.
Residents both in support of and against the ordinance reportedly expressed
the need for more police on the streets.
In April, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., an East St Louis native visited East St. Louis
and called for an end to late-night liquor sales, which he called "an
invitation for more murders, more crime."
U.S. Attorney Stephen Wigginton says East St. Louis has a murder rate
equivalent to 109 killings for every 100,000 residents. The national average is
five per 100,000.
Parks said the ordinance could be up for vote by the council next
month.
Its
interesting that there is more focus on closing shop of clubs than on the closing of various school sin the city based
on the number of citizens who attended the hearing. Parks’ bottom line is
making money from sales from those businesses so the less hours the less money
generated in the city budget. We think
that the city may rally around this issue and may vote to close the clubs
early.
Controversial radio personality JC Corcoran who
recently was fired at KTRS (550 AM), thinks his days in the St.
Louis market might be over after a nearly
three-decade run.
Corcoran made a one-day return to the airwaves when he joined Brian
McKenna and Jeff Gordon for jock talk recently on KSLG (1380 AM) as he filled
in for Rob Godier.
He said he might appear on other sports shows in the next few
weeks, but seems pessimistic about remaining in the market long-term.
"We sold our house last Saturday in anticipation of most
likely leaving'' he said. "If anyone (locally) has anything to say, I'd
encourage them to speak up because all the discussion I am having are from
out-of-town stations. There don't seem to be any (decent) opportunities in St.
Louis .
" I don't feel I'm in a position that I have to take a
tertiary-level position just to remain working in St.
Louis . I'm having discussion with some
pretty big stations in pretty big cities. Nothing's on the table yet, but I am
led to believe there will be soon. If nobody in St.
Louis steps forward and offers something, I'm going to go.''
Corcoran said if he leaves, he'd like to go out with a grand
finale.

Pies Upper Crust had its Soft Opening last weekend located off Grand. According
to St Louis American’s Partyline writer Delores Shante she “was thrilled with
the whole get-up from the foyer to that fabulous patio! They pulled out all of
the stops from a step show to a full-on song and dance and the only bad thing I
can say about the whole experience is that my diet is officially ruined.
“The
invite said refreshments, but since when is macaroni & cheese a
refreshment? I am still full. But back to the event. They have a restaurant, a
dessert diner and banquet hall all in one and it is “laid out.”
