OUT 814--ILLIMO BITZ

HEY OUTTOWNERS

ITS THURSDAY—A NEW DAY

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

Prayers still go out to Port Au Prince, Chile and now the miners in West Virginia

As we continue our celebration of ILLIMO poets during National Poetry Month, we highlight East St. Louis native poet/educator Eugene B. Redmond.

Born in St. Louis in December 1937, Eugene B. Redmond is a poet, playwright, critic, editor, educator, and important figure in the 1960s black arts movement. Orphaned at age nine, he was raised by his grandmother and “neighborhood fathers,” made up of members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and friends of his older brother. During high school he worked on the newspaper and yearbook, performed in school and church plays, and composed for neighborhood singing groups.

From 1958 to 1961 Redmond served as a U.S. Marine in the Far East, acquiring a speaking knowledge of Japanese. He was an associate editor of the East St. Louis Beacon from 1961 to 1962. In 1963 Redmond co-founded a weekly paper in East St. Louis, the Monitor, working at different times as a contributing editor, executive editor, and editorial page editor. At Southern Illinois University he was the first African American student editor of the university newspaper. After receiving his bachelor's degree in English literature in 1964, he earned a master's degree in English literature from Washington University in 1966.In 1965, while still in graduate school, Redmond won first prize in the Washington University Annual Festival of the Arts for his poem “Eye in the Ceiling.”

In 1968 he published his first volume of poetry, A Tale of Two Toms, or Tom-Tom (Uncle Toms of East St. Louis and St. Louis). Subsequent volumes include A Tale of Time & Toilet Tissue (1969), Sentry of the Four Golden Pillars (1970), River of Bones and Flesh and Blood (1971), Songs from an Afro/Phone (1972), Consider Loneliness as These Things (1973), In a Time of Rain & Desire (1973), and Eye on the Ceiling (1991). Three of these collections were published by the Black Writers Press, which Redmond founded with Henry Dumas and Sherman Fowler. He has been poet in residence at Oberlin College, California State University, University of Wisconsin, and Wayne State.

From 1967 to 1969 Redmond was a senior consultant to Katherine Dunham at Southern University's Performing Arts Training Center, where he acted, directed, wrote plays, and supervised the drama and writing departments. Twelve of Redmond's plays, ballets, and choral dramas have been produced on university campuses and on California television. Redmond's one-act Will I Still Be Here Tomorrow was also produced Off-Broadway at the Martinique Theatre in New York in 1972. Redmond combined writing with performance with a 1973 recording of his poems, Bloodlinks and Sacred Places.

Redmond's commitment to the concept of an “African continuum” is evident in his influential study, Drumvoices: The Mission of Afro-American Poetry, A Critical History (1976). A survey of poetry from 1746 to 1976 that took eight years to research, Drumvoices explores the “complex web of beliefs, customs, traditions and significant practices that tie diasporan black cultures to their African origins.”

Redmond has also contributed significantly to African American letters by editing volumes of African American writing, establishing multi-cultural literary journals—including Literati Internazionali and Drumvoices Revue—and training young writers. He is Henry Dumas's literary executor and has edited seven volumes of Dumas's work, including Goodbye Sweet-water (1988) and Knees of a Natural Man (1989).

Redmond was a professor at Southern Illinois University since 1990 until his retirement in 2008. His community activities include organizing the annual “Break Word with the World” event in East St. Louis, a month-long “mock trial of the media” culminating in a reading and publication.

Redmond has received wide recognition as a poet and teacher. In 1976 he became poet laureate of East St. Louis, the first poet laureate named by a municipality. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts creative writing fellowship in 1978. The Eugene B. Redmond Writers Club was founded in 1986, with writers such as Maya Angelou and Amiri Baraka on the board of directors. Eye on the Ceiling (1991) won an American Book Award. In 1993 Pan-African Movement USA awarded him a Pyramid Award for lifetime contributions to Pan-Africanism through poetry. He received a “Tribute to an Elder” award from African Poetry Theater in 1995.

IN THE A&E NEWZ: THE BIG ILLMO NEWZ STORY WAS:

President Barack Obama throwing out the first pitch at the Phillies, Nationals game at Nationals Park in D.C. Monday to boos from the crowd.

From reports, there were two waves of boos. The first came when he walked out of the dugout and onto the field. But then, as Obama reportedly took the mound wearing a red Nationals jacket, was when the boos got louder when he took from his glove a folded Chicago White Sox cap, shook it open and put it on his head.

As far as his pitch to the Nats catcher is was far from luster. He reportedly completed his delivery, using the familiar motion some commentators have in the past derided as a "girl toss." The ball floated, slowly and with great loft, in the general direction of home plate, but -- metaphor alert! -- wild and far to the left.

The man assigned to catch this balloon, Ryan Zimmerman, jumped up from his crouch behind the plate and took a couple of quick steps to his right, meeting the ball when it finally came down behind, and on the wrong side of, the batter's box.

There were reportedly shouts of "ohh" in the crowd. Screech, the Nationals' mascot, signaled that the pitch was a ball. But Obama seemed to think it a success. He did what looked to be a small fist-pump celebration before leaving the mound.

And now, back to the White House. LOL

In other national ILLIMO newz

Award winning singer/actress Jennifer Hudson has been on the promotion frenzy talking about her 60 plus pound weight loss through her new sponsor Weight Watchers. She is the new spokesperson for the diet company’s new campaign and has appeared in TV commercials talking about what she has experienced in her quest to lose weight.

In an advertisement for Weight Watchers, the singer and actress Jennifer Hudson says she is “a jean size smaller” and “a confidence size bigger.”

Hudson, followed a Weight Watchers program for several months After givingborth to her first child in August , tracking what she ate, intensifying her exercise routine and meeting weekly with a diet coach.

Hudson says in one television spot that “I’ve never been this size in my adult life” — are on display in three 30-second and one 15-second commercials, which make up the Weight Watchers campaign. The commercials show a slimmed-down Ms. Hudson, who competed on “American Idol” in 2004, and are meant to convey that she is a “regular woman who has struggled with her weight, but has found a winning formula that works for her life.”
J Hud mayhave won on the weight battle, but she got panned harshly for her rendition
Of “One Shining Moment” following the following the NCAA tournament final saying it was a too packaged, too much of J Hud and not of the NCAa tourney and that she was off key.
DAMN.

Well, as they say, you gotta take the good with the bad and make “Bood”. LOL

The BIG STL NEWZ STORY WAS:

And speaking of poets, Fofeet made a faux paus on the air somewhat when she called in this week on the Tony Scott Show to chime in about STLians pronoucining streets incoreectly . Well, she said that people mispronounced the street, Choteau, well she proncouned it sha-TOW with emphasis on TOW but Tony Scott said to her that people who called earlier sais that its pronounced SHO-tow. Then , she thought about it and said, "I think you're right." Both Scott and his co-host Tammie Holland teased her by giving her the gas face. LOL
