OUT 662--STL-TIDBITZ AND MORE!

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THURSDAY

(ONE DAY LATE)

TIME TO GET TOWNED!
Before we get into the A&E in the ILLI and MO, happy d-day to Chicago-based President Barack Obama who celebrated his 48th this week. We still waitin on that National Holiday, Congress. LOL

The national arts and entertainment story with an ILLI and MO base that made headlines was the Narobi crash that took place this week which had St. Losui based documentarians Dan Parris and Rob Lehr. They were traveling to Kenya to film for the company Give A Damn! The movie is about the two guys different points of view of how to deal with poverty. According to reports, the crew had been in Africa for only a couple of days before boarding the Cessna 206 plane. Lehr and Parris were getting footage of the Kibera slum in Nairobi. As it was returning to the airport, the Cessna reportedly stalled, and the pilot tried to land it on a road outside the slum to avoid injuring anyone. But the plane reportedly struck a telephone pole or wire. The pilot died, and the plane's flight engineer suffered severe burns. Currently, the two friends are still being treated at a hospital in Nairobi , and it's unclear when they'll return home. Two other documentary crew members, the Peterka Brothers (who were not on the plane) also from St. Louis reportedly said they want to stay in Africa and continue making the movie. Neither was on the plane. For more info go on the movie's website,
www.giveadamndoc.com and at www.twitter.com/giveadamndoc.

Locally, the newz story was that last Friday was the first day of training camp for the St. Louis at Rams Park in Earth City.It was reportedly the first day on the job for new head coach Steve Spagnuolo. The camp will feature 32 practices open to the public at the Russell Training Center in Earth City, Mo., and an open scrimmage at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., on August 7. The Rams will travel to New York to take on the Jets on August 14 in their first preseason contest, before returning to St. Louis to host the Atlanta Falcons at the newly-renovated Edward Jones Dome on August 21. The Rams will conclude training camp on August 23 before finishing their preseason schedule with contests at Cincinnati (August 27) and vs. Kansas City in the annual Governor’s Cup contest (September 3). Single game tickets for the Rams home games also go on sale this Friday at the Edward Jones Dome. Hmmm isn’t it interesting that its first pre-season game will be with the Atlanta Falcons? And who used to be a member of the falcons? Michael Vick. And there have been talks that the Rams organization had interest in Vick joining the team later next season. We are sure if that is the case, the tickets to those games will go as high as Heaven on a bad day!
"

ST. Louis based rock legend Chuck Berry will be inducted into the St. Lousi Gateway classic Sports Foundations Annual Walk of Fame. He will be honored August 29 at its headquarters on 2012 MLK Drive. Berry is among five honorees. The other STL based persons are U.S. Secret Service pioneer: Abraham Bolden, musician Lloyd Arthur Smith, businessman David L. Steward, and scientist Lincoln I. Diuguid.

St. Louis native comic legend/activist Dick Gregory will be on hand for a panel discussion for the documentary, “Clean Mic: Laugh Until It Hurts” that will be screened at Lee Auditorium at Missouri History Museum August 20. (CLICK ON FLYER PIC FOR MORE INFO)

Hot 104.1’s Boogie D and St. Lunatic member Murphy Lee are putting up their dukes to fight—well not exactly. As part of the national release of the video game EA Sports Fight Night Round 4, the guys will compete on the video at the Loft Nightclub Friday, August 7 at 8 p.m. FREE ENTRY Boogie D has been hyping up this fight on his afternoon radio show and he says that if he wins, Murphy Lee will have to take out 10 ladies and their guests
on a date. If Murphy Lee wins Boogie D said out of his own mouth that he would let Murphy Lee take over his radio show and play what EVER he wants. It’s a FREE event. Hmm, it doesn’t seem like too much of a bet especially for Murph who we are sure can handle taking out party people and hosting a show (he had his own show with Kyjuan and comedian Darius Bradford on Sundays on 100,3 The Beat). I think a better bet would have been Murph had to cut off his locks if Boogie D won and if Murph won, Boogie D had to wear a dreadlock wig to work and at special events til the end of the year. LOL

Speaking of fighters, St. Louis native boxer Devon Alexander will receive the Key to the City of St. Louis on Thursday at St. Louis City Hall. STL Mayor Slay will honor Alexander for winning the vacant World Boxing Council super lightweight championship last weekend and for setting an example for young people in his hometown by stressing the importance of education, citizenship and physical fitness. Alexander’s trainer, Kevin Cunningham, will also attend the ceremony.

Several veteran rappers will be gracing the STl stage this and next month.
This weekend, Grammy award nominated rappers Naughty By Nature will host STL PROM @ HOME NIGHTCLUB. Presented by Home Nightclub’s hypeman Arty J, dee-jay Jay E. Go To: www.stlprom.com
and vote for your favorate Prom King, Queen, Princess, and Prince. To see Arty talk about the show go to

Those who purchased tickets to Ladies Night with R&B group Silk that was scheduled for Aug. 28 at the Ambassador was canceled this week. You can get your refunds wherever you got the tickets.

Speaking of club openings, is Mississippi Nights returning back to St. Louis? Well sorta. From reports, some St. Louis businessmen have bought some property in the old Laclede Power Building at Lewis and O'Fallon streets to bring back the venue that close dshop in 2007 in Laclede’s Landing for the Lumiere Place expansion project. But the only problem is, the new businessmen are not the old owners of the nearly 30 year old Mississippi Nights and its name and they reportedly didn’t trademark the name itself so the new businessmen could use it. .No legal action has been reportedly taken so it could be possible that the venue could be named Mississippi Nights. The new businessmen reportedly have came up with possible other names (one was Laclede Power House from reports). What do you think? Do you think the new businessmen should use the name or get another name? Email us at
maatspear@yahoo.com and tell us what you think.

St. Louis based Shi Salon will be featured on the season premiere of the reality show “Split Ends” that is aired on the Style Network. The show follows two salons of different coasts that switch respective cities and work in the other owner’s salon. Shi Salon workers went to Beverly Hills to Elgin Charles’ Salon (Jackee Harry’s ex) and Elgin Charles’s workers went to the STL to work in Shi Salon localted on Olive downtown. To celebrate, there will be a viewing party of the show this Saturday August 8 at Skybox hosted by Mocha Latte (who we hear is one of the ones getting their hairr did in the episode. LOL) . IN THE MIA FILE-What happened to socialite Terrell Anderson (LEFT) ?

BLIND PICZ. Who was the b-boy who did his thing on the Archgrounds during the Live on the Levee concert last Saturday?

BLIND BITZ. Which venue was the scene where a patron lost his eye in a beer bottle fight? (Hint. The venue’s name comes from the name of the popular street that is “owned” )

BLIND BITZ EXTRA: AT SUMMER REIGN AT THE OZARKS

Week 2: Here is a blind bitz item from a source. Which socialite got so sloppy drunk that they collapsed on another socialite? (Hint. The drunk person was a male and they used to “snap the city ” in the clubs. The one who got collapsed on is part of the promotions team who helped get things “reigned” on.)

WORDZ to the WHYz

Why do you have to “get ignut” with a business to get good service? Why has former Club Society owner Jon Burns go over to the E Side in East Boogie to open up a club? Why haven’t we heard from STL rapper Huey lately? Why hasn’t Day 26 scored a Top 10 hit? Why does the Mariah-Eminem dirt throwing seem like a publicity stunt (ala Eminem and the Gay Bruno stint at the MTV Movie Awards)? Why does it seem the producers of "American Idol" were replacing Paula Abdul last season when they hired Kara on the show?

Streetballers is an award winning film from a filmmaker groomed by Sundance, and represented by top Hollywood representation. And yes.... Living in Saint Louis. It is a truly independent project with years of hard work, thoughtfulness, and skill behind its execution and style. The extremely diverse and talented team behind Streetballers is and will be the key to all future success. We are young artist driven by love, loyalty and friendship. Our goal is to inspire as individuals and our film is a tool to inspire the masses. We’re planning on opening the film in Saint Louis, MO on August 21st then expanding to various cities with a large urban/sports/college market (Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit). We have toured the U.S. and won numerous awards through festivals. We have turned down traditional distribution outlets and decided to self-distribute the film utilizing DCI compliant technology (Digital Projection).

In Saint Louis, we set two records. The highest rated film in the history of the Saint Louis International Film festival (beating Oscar winning and nominated films Juno, The Wrestler, and Slumdog Millionaire) and also the highest attendance record selling out the day before each screening. We are looking to release the film in Saint Louis on August 21st we would like to stagger the release in other cities to late September/early October and try to release in conjunction with the LeBron James documentary being released by Lions Gate.

Directed by St. Louis bred Matthew Scott Krentz, who also co-stars, Streetballers hit the festival circuit in June 2008, making its World Premiere at the Hollywood Black Film Festival. It has gone on to play in Saint Louis, Detroit, New York City, Nashville, North Carolina, and Philadelphia, winning multiple awards such as Best Dramatic Feature, an Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, and a Second Place Jury Award for Best Feature Film.
The Streetballers team has attached the popular indie shoe company, Greedy Genius http://www.greedygenius.com/ to create and distribute the official Streetballers shoe, at Finish Line stores this fall. We have also attached three platinum hip-hop artist to the soundtrack and will be shooting the music video this spring to help promote the film and the soundtrackJust over a month ago, Streetballers writer/director/producer/co-star Matthew Krentz signed with APA and Leverage Management. A portion of the proceeds from the soundtrack will be donated to several different charities.
As we mentioned above the team is comprised of loyal, hardworking and loving artists who are dedicated to reaching up, reaching out and giving back to the St.Louis community. We realize and embrace our roles as mentors. We except that esponsibility, while challenging ourselves to be the best rolemodels we can be,we stress education;because without education would not be where we are today. The Streetballers team has an extremely popular film, with a ton of street credit, and has developed a tremendous theatrical strategy of releasing the film in theatres across the U.S. with the Streetballers producer/actors and director touring with the film.

For more info go to http://www.streetballersthemovie.com/

St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society – a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, recognize, and promote the R&B heritage of the St. Louis region. Founded by local businessman, entrepreneur, and longtime civic leader Reginald D. Dickson(and the owner of the favorite pre-theater dining restaurant, Reggie’s Backstage, located directly across the street from the Fox Theatre in Grand Center.), the Society’s vision is to be St. Louis’ preeminent organization for R&B performances, education, and preservation activities. It also aims to increase the community’s knowledge and appreciation of the major role played by St. Louis in the advancement of R&B music. To fulfill its vision, the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society will establish a performance venue for local and nationally-recognized R&B artists. It will also develop programs to educate individuals – young and old – about R&B. The Society also has future plans to develop a museum to archive and document the history of R&B and its existence in St. Louis, which was a locus for the musical form throughout the mid 1900s. At the helm of the Society is executive director Cornelius Washington, who holds 20 years experience working with non-profit organizations in the Midwest in program management and fund raising. Cornelius holds a Bachelor’s degree in music and for several years was a high school band director in Mississippi and Georgia. An accomplished musician, he has performed with regional and national recording artists and with local concert bands.Currently, Cornelius is building a base of founding members, developing a board of directors, and lining up performances for the 2009-2010 season The St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society will establish its performance venue inside the current space of Reggie’s Backstage at 522 North Grand Boulevard in Grand Center. The finished product will be a space that operates both as a performance venue for the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society as well as a fully functional restaurant. The Society, as a non-profit organization with its own board of directors, will operate independent of Reggie’s Backstage. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking,” what can I do to make a difference.” As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. “I can start a collection and give back to the community.” So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea.
