NOW ON TO THE NEWZ:
We lost guitar pioneer Les Paul who died last week at the age of 94. Born Lester William Polsfuss in
Waukesha, Wisconsin,, he was an American innovator, inventor, musician and songwriter. He was credited as a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which "made the sound of rock and roll possible" [1] recording innovations, including overdubbing (also known as sound on sound),[2] delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects, and multitrack recording.[3]He recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950s and they sold millions of records.
Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[8] He is prominently named by the music museum on its website as an "architect" and a "key inductee".[9]
As far as his Missouri and Illinois roots, at age seventeen, Paul played with Rube Tronson's Texas Cowboys, and soon after he dropped out of high school to join Wolverton's Radio Band in St. Louis, Missouri, on KMOX and in the 1930s, Paul worked in Chicago, Illinois, in radio, where he performed jazz. Paul's first two records were released in 1936. One was credited to "Rhubarb Red", Paul's hillbilly alter ego, and the other was as an accompanist for blues-artist Georgia White. On August 13, 2009, Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York.

Locally, hundreds of fans packed RT Ballpark in Ofallon, Mo. To check out cards first baseman Albert Pujols and b-ball star Shaquille ONeal challenge each other in a home run derby competition last Thursday. The event was filmed for Shaq’s new ABC reality show, “Shaq vs.” (which debuted this Thursday on ABC) where the sky-tall star challenges various sports stars in their perspective sporting skill. Earlier that day, Pujols and Oneal were at a press conference (PHOTO BY ERICA BROOKS) held at the Four Seasons Hotel on Lumiere Place. There, Shaq said to the press, “ When I was little, I was known as Shaq-ie Robinson, I had the world’s biggest strike zone, so my hitting average was just terrible.” To make things easier for ONeal, the fences were reportedly moved in for O’Neal, who used a 37-ounce bat. Pujols reportedly uses a 34.5-ounce bat. Cardinals first-base coach Dave McKay served as the pitcher. The date of the Shaq vs.Pujols episode will air Sept. 1.
Oh and we know who won by the way, but we don’t wanna spoil it for those who wasn’t at RT Ball park. Any guesses to who won and the score? Email us at maat.atkins@gmail.com and the closest winner will accompany Ma’at to any upcoming event FREE. Answers should be sent to the email before Sept. 1.

In related newz, MediaTakout.com reported today O'Neal is facing a court battle over his new “Shaq Vs.” sports show- as an author has accused entertainment bosses of stealing his idea. Oh-oh.

In other sporting newz, now that we found out that reinstated footballer Michael Vick signed to the Eagles leaving no hopes for the possibilities of him coming to the Rams, we have to hope that Rams quarterback Marc Bulger gets his finger straight—literally. This week, Bulger injured his pinky finger on his right, passing hand doing a snap during an afternoon practice at Rams Park. According to reports, X-rays revealed that Bulger suffered a small fracture in the pinky finger of his throwing hand and will miss at least two weeks. Second stringer Kyle Boller will reportedly start for the Rams against Atlanta on Friday and at Cincinnati on Aug. 27. Meanwhile, bulger is still practicing and has his pinky finger and ring finger on his right hand taped up.

In unrelated rams newz, this Thursday, St. Louis Rams staff, alumni and cheerleaders will welcome back St. Louis Public School (SLPS) students on the first day of school. The Rams, in partnership with Office Essentials, will donate more than $25,000 worth of school supplies to students at Beaumont High School, Vashon High School, Sumner High School and Roosevelt High School. As part of the organization’s monthly “Days of Service” initiative, the Rams will gather at 6:45 am at the four schools in anticipation of the students’ arrival. In addition to the $25,000 worth of school supplies, the Rams are also providing SLPS with 1,000 tickets to the Rams vs. Atlanta Falcons game this Friday to incentivize student attendance.

Nationally, Grammy Award winning Chicago based rapper Kanye West is going gay over Lady Gaga. According to reports, pop sensation Lady Gaga agreed to co-headline with West (back in June) only if he agreed to put on a "gay" show for her homosexual fanbase. According to reports, before agreeing to it, Gaga , who revealed that she is bisexual, made sure West was aware her outrageous productions are aimed at her gay followers (hint, boy-boy and girl –girl action). She reportedly told the rapper, "I just want to be clear before we decide to do this together: I'm gay. My music is gay. My show is gay. And I love that it's gay. And I love my gay fans and they're all going to be coming to our show. And it's going to remain gay." She said that if it wasn’t for the gay community supporting her early on, she wouldn’t have the platinum success she has now. Earlier this year, Kanye remade Gaga’s crossover smash “Poker Face” and retitled it, “I Poke Her Face.” We are sure Kanye doesn’t have a problem with all this especially after it was reported that he is an insane fan of gagas and his on-off –on again girlfriend model Amber Rose is also reportedly bisexual. Hmm, wonder if she will get Kanye to perform that song with her—on all levels. LOL.
The tour is reportedly set to kick off on October 4 of this year in Lady Gaga's home state of New York. As far as tour dates in the ILLI AND MO, according to the tour schedule, they are set to perform in St. Louis Dec 6 at the Scott Trade Center. Earlier dates from that date in the area is Chi-town on Nov, 2 at the United Center and Kansas City. Mo on Dec 05 at the sprint Center.

Chi-town’s Melody Angel (PICTURED),who wowed the crowd and the judges of her newly created punk soul sound (and was picked one of two singers as the best that week) and O’fallon, Mo’s Lauren Thomas who was unfortunately eliminated (more like verbally brutalized). Nicole made headlines a few weeks ago after she revealed to the press that the baby’s father was former Grand Hustle ENt’s recording artist AlfaMega who was fire dby its label owner T.I. after it was repordtely reveled from Smoking Gun that he had been an informant for the

Murphy Lee’s St. Lunatic colleague, Nelly also will be celebrating the release of a new project, but this go round its not a CD. He will open up an Apple Bottoms boutique for all size women inside Dillards at the Galleria in Clayton August 29. Nelly himself will be on hand for opening beginning at 2 p.m. in the store’s first-floor junior’s department.
Nelly kicked off the line in 2003 with his business partners Ian Kelly and his cousin Yomi Martin (former VP of Nelly’s mens line, VOKAL) .
We hear that the directors up at Dillards had to pay boo-koo dollaz for security when Nelly shows up at the store and this was the first time they had to shell off income for the guards fro crowd crowd control (Hmm, what about when St. Louis native model/mogul Kimora lee came through last year for her Baby Phat line?).

Actor and minister, the Rev. Clifton Davis, was the keynote speaker last Saturday for the 20th anniversary of the Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club’s “Say Amen” banquet. The banquet was held at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark. Two of this year’s emcees were STL journalists Jon Grayson of KMOX and Art Holliday of KSDK will share the emcee’s spotlight.

Interestingly enough. Davis was the speaker at the first banquet, which was named in honor of his 1980s’ show “Amen’ and to commend the 20th anniversary and Davis’ return, the vent was retitled, “Say Amen Again.”
We guess at the 30th anniversary, if Davis is still around (he would be in his 70s), and he returned again, they would title it, “Say Amen Three Times.” LOL

The Grand opening of Plush was not last weekend as wasadvertised but actually this Saturday with Lil Boosie performing (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW).
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OUTTOWN EXCLUSIVE:
Speaking of grand opening, there was definitely a grand opening that took place last Friday at Kid N Play and Kory B’s House Party that was held at the West End mansion in Midtown. But not opening that you think. It was more of a grand opening of the door to the house leading people out of the party. According to the source, the event got so packed with folk that people paid money to hang outside! Not only that, because of the location, which is of a “quiet-based neighborhood,” and the noise from the dee-jay music, neighbors called the cops to complain. As a result, the cops ordered for the party to be cut short and people leaving. Well, that didn’t sit too well with those who got there and paid money to hang outside. Well, the promoters I hear were not offering refunds. (You pay, you buy actually) not only that, several small melees erupted outside causing the fuzz to crack some heads as well as arrest some folk for disturbing the peace. One sista who was in a tizzy from the mess, was cussin up a storm to police, got arrested and had an asthma attack during the paddy wagon trip. Wow, this is not a good look at all for urban parties in the milk if ya know what we are saying. As far as the special guests who were supposed to appear LARRY HUGHES, LAURENCE MARONEY, CORY SPINKS AND JIBBS our source didn’t get to go inside long enough for them to appear or for the party to last for them to appear. Wow TMP!

And lastly, whats really going on with reports of the new club going on in St. Louis that’s not at a club. We are talking about the parking lot at White Castle’s on South Broadway? (It’s more like Club W.C.P.L.--White Castle Parking LOT) ? On the weekends, It’s like a Ice Cream Paint job car show as folk hang outside of them blocking the drive thru for those who want to just get a midnite snack. And from what the Evening Whirl reported, last weekend someone got shotby a young hooligan from an altercation concerning money. This is a police’s blood thirst for sure (coming in a strong second is the BP Gas station on Olive next to the Loft on weekends).

MOCHA's CORNER

Miss Latte can be seen in the social life club pics in the latest issue of Alive Magazine!

Young Ro filmed a new video for his newest single, "Runway chick" recently at the old Dreams Nightclub on Washington. It was shot by Block DVD and the video chic starring in the video was reality show personality Caviar from "For the Love of Ray J.

Streetballers is an award winning film from a filmmaker groomed by Sundance, and represented by top Hollywood representation. And yes.... Living in Saint Louis. It is a truly independent project with years of hard work, thoughtfulness, and skill behind its execution and style. The extremely diverse and talented team behind Streetballers is and will be the key to all future success. We are young artist driven by love, loyalty and friendship. Our goal is to inspire as individuals and our film is a tool to inspire the masses. We’re planning on opening the film in Saint Louis, MO on August 21st then expanding to various cities with a large urban/sports/college market (Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit).

We have toured the U.S. and won numerous awards through festivals. We have turned down traditional distribution outlets and decided to self-distribute the film utilizing DCI compliant technology (Digital Projection). In Saint Louis, we set two records. The highest rated film in the history of the Saint Louis International Film festival (beating Oscar winning and nominated films Juno, The Wrestler, and Slumdog Millionaire) and also the highest attendance record selling out the day before each screening.

We are looking to release the film in Saint Louis on August 21st we would like to stagger the release in other cities to late September/early October and try to release in conjunction with the LeBron James documentary being released by Lions Gate. Directed by St. Louis bred Matthew Scott Krentz, who also co-stars, Streetballers hit the festival circuit in June 2008, making its World Premiere at the Hollywood Black Film Festival. It has gone on to play in Saint Louis, Detroit, New York City, Nashville, North Carolina, and Philadelphia, winning multiple awards such as Best Dramatic Feature, an Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, and a Second Place Jury Award for Best Feature Film.

The Streetballers team has attached the popular indie shoe company, Greedy Genius http://www.greedygenius.com/ to create and distribute the official Streetballers shoe, at Finish Line stores this fall. We have also attached three platinum hip-hop artist to the soundtrack and will be shooting the music video this spring to help promote the film and the soundtrackJust over a month ago, Streetballers writer/director/producer/co-star Matthew Krentz signed with APA and Leverage Management.

A portion of the proceeds from the soundtrack will be donated to several different charities. As we mentioned above the team is comprised of loyal, hardworking and loving artists who are dedicated to reaching up, reaching out and giving back to the St.Louis community. We realize and embrace our roles as mentors. We except that responsibility, while challenging ourselves to be the best rolemodels we can be,we stress education;because without education would not be where we are today.

The Streetballers team has an extremely popular film, with a ton of street credit, and has developed a tremendous theatrical strategy of releasing the film in theatres across the U.S. with the Streetballers producer/actors and director touring with the film.

St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society – a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, recognize, and promote the R&B heritage of the St. Louis region. Founded by local businessman, entrepreneur, and longtime civic leader Reginald D. Dickson(and the owner of the favorite pre-theater dining restaurant, Reggie’s Backstage, located directly across the street from the Fox Theatre in Grand Center.), the Society’s vision is to be St. Louis’ preeminent organization for R&B performances, education, and preservation activities. It also aims to increase the community’s knowledge and appreciation of the major role played by St. Louis in the advancement of R&B music. To fulfill its vision, the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society will establish a performance venue for local and nationally-recognized R&B artists. It will also develop programs to educate individuals – young and old – about R&B. The Society also has future plans to develop a museum to archive and document the history of R&B and its existence in St. Louis, which was a locus for the musical form throughout the mid 1900s. At the helm of the Society is executive director Cornelius Washington, who holds 20 years experience working with non-profit organizations in the Midwest in program management and fund raising. Cornelius holds a Bachelor’s degree in music and for several years was a high school band director in Mississippi and Georgia. An accomplished musician, he has performed with regional and national recording artists and with local concert bands.Currently, Cornelius is building a base of founding members, developing a board of directors, and lining up performances for the 2009-2010 season The St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society will establish its performance venue inside the current space of Reggie’s Backstage at 522 North Grand Boulevard in Grand Center. The finished product will be a space that operates both as a performance venue for the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society as well as a fully functional restaurant. The Society, as a non-profit organization with its own board of directors, will operate independent of Reggie’s Backstage. KMJM personality Tammi Holland sent OUTTOWN an uplifting email from dress collector Tracie Ousley. It reads:There have been a lot of parents that have lost their jobs and have daughters that may not be able to participate in a day that you can never get back, their senior prom. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking,” what can I do to make a difference.” As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. “I can start a collection and give back to the community.” So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea. So here we are. Let’s make a difference in a young lady’s life.Ousley, a Vashon High School Alumni Lounge Is sponsoring a Prom Dress Collection & Sell-A-Thon to raise funds for a 2009 graduating senior. Please go to this link to download flyer with additional information
