OUT 795--ILLIMO A&E BITZ (UPDATES)

HEY OUTTOWNERS!

ITS WEDNESDAY

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!
Before we get started, again give your prayers and contributions to the rebuilding of Part Au Prince, Haiti and now the people of Chile, South America who suffered an 8.8 earthquake last Friday.
AND

Don't forget to fill out your 2010 Census. Get Counted--and it's the law!
As we enter March, we begin Women's History Month and to specify it for OUTTOWN, we will
highlight some of the women who were born, raised, or lived in the ILLIMO that are in the arts and entertainment field.

This week we highlight St. Louis native singer/producer, Angela Winbush.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Angela began singing in church. She did not initially aspire to a career in music, instead studying architecture at [2]Howard University, [3] singing only to earn extra money. She continued to sing in church while at Howard as well as with gospel legend Richard Smallwood.
By 1977, Angela had changed her major to music education, and recorded a demo. She shopped it to various record labels with no success but, through a personal introduction furnished by respected industry veteran, Wayne K. Garfield, the demo was heard by New York disc jockey Gary Byrd, who made the call that landed Angela a spot in Stevie Wonder's backing vocal group, Wonderlove.
Becoming Wonder's protegé, she learned a great deal about writing and arranging songs. While in Los Angeles with Wonder, Angela met singer René Moore; the two never became a couple, and only wrote songs and performed together.
René & Angela released their self-titled debut album in 1980, followed by Wall to Wall in 1982 and Rise in 1983. During this period they had two moderate hit singles, "I Love You More" and "My First Love".
During Rene & Angela's early years, Moore and Winbush were asked to produce songs for Janet Jackson's 1982 self-titled debut album, Janet Jackson. One of the songs, "Young Love", became Jackson's first top ten R&B hit reaching number six on the chart. [4] They also wrote exclusively for Stephanie Mills, who forged a close friendship with Winbush (their "I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love", gave Mills her first-ever #1 R&B single, in 1985). Winbush would later write another Mills number one R&B hit with "Something in the Way You Make Me Feel". Between that, Rene & Angela decided to branch out and find a bigger fan base signing with Mercury Records in 1984.
They released their breakthrough album, A Street Called Desire the following year. Among the hit singles included on the album was their first R&B number one with the dance single, "Save Your Love (For #1)", which included guest vocals from rapper Kurtis Blow, making it besides Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You", one of the first songs to prominently feature a rapper. Other hit singles included "I'll Be Good", the mostly Winbush-led "Your Smile" was another number one hit while the subsequent "You Don't Have to Cry", hit number two in the beginning of 1986. Eventually A Street Called Desire sold over a million copies going platinum, but on the brink of their greatest success, tensions between Winbush and Moore had grown.
In 1986, Winbush was introduced to Ronald Isley (her soon to be husband but have divorced in 2002) , lead singer of the influential Isley Brothers after Benny Medina had agreed to ask Winbush to be involved with the Isleys' next record when Isley proposed plans to work with Winbush on a future project. Producing, writing and arranging the Isleys' Smooth Sailin' album, Winbush helped the group, now including just Ronald and Rudolph (eldest brother O'Kelly had died the previous year), score a top 10 R&B hit with the title track.

In turn, Isley opted to manage Winbush and he helped in the process of releasing her debut solo album,
Sharp, which was also released in 1987. The album included the huge hit, "Angel" which showcased Angela's multi-octave range. In 1988, she wrote and produced two tracks for Sheena Easton's gold album The Lover In Me. In 1989, Winbush released her follow-up to Sharp with It's the Real Thing. In 1993, . Winbush released her third self-titled solo album.
In 2003, Winbush made news when it was found out she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Eventually after a successful surgery, the cancer was in remission and Winbush returned to perform on the road.

THE BIG A&E EVENT that happened this week in the A&E world was

NBA HAll of Famer/Former Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan striking a deal to buy controlling interest of the Charlotte Bobcats, taking charge of the money-losing team in his home state.

Jordan was able to put together an ownership group to buy the team he has been a part-owner of since 2006. Jordan has been running the team's basketball operations.

The purchase price was not immediately available.
Former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos also bid on the Bobcats. The NBA's owners still must approve the purchase.

The deal will end Bob Johnson's largely unsuccessful stint as the first black majority owner of a major professional sports team.

Chicago-based film critic/ author Roger Ebert made an appearance, along with his wife, Chaz, recently ion Chitown talk show queen Oprah Winfrey’s Show to talk about his life after beating thyroid cancer in 2006, losing his voice and parts of his face and using a voice application that fit his normal voice.

Chaz Ebert was moved to tears. "I think it's incredible," she said. "It's incredible that that's your voice." The last time she heard a sound similar to her husband's voice was July, 2006, she said.
Roger Ebert believes the voice still needs some improvement, but called the similarity to his old voice uncanny. "This is the first version of my computer voice," he said, "but it still sounds like me."
Ebert lost much of his jaw during his battle with thyroid cancer, and now that he's free from the disease, he told Winfrey he's done with surgery.
"I'm not going to talk or drink again, so the surgery would be only to patch my face back together, and I don't want to go through that," Ebert said. "This is the way that I look, and I'm productive, so why have more surgery? ... No one looks perfect -- we have to find peace with the way we look and get on with life."

For Winfrey, Roger Ebert's other half has been just as inspirational.
"I remember when Roger was going through those early surgeries, and from one woman to another, you are incredible," Winfrey said, recalling when Chaz Ebert said she refused to let her husband die. "She's stood by him and been with him and taken care of him, and she's shown what true love is."

He also presented his picks for the Oscars.
Ebert told Winfrey he believes Mo'Nique will win best supporting actress for her role in "Precious," and that Christoph Waltz will win best supporting actor for "Inglourious Basterds." For best actor, Ebert is putting his money on Jeff Bridges for his role in "Crazy Heart," and is going with fan-favorite Sandra Bullock for best actress for her performance in "The Blind Side."
"I can't remember a year when it's been easier to predict the Oscars," Ebert said. The one category he said he considers questionable is best picture, which he believes will go to Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker." He also said he thinks Bigelow will take home the Oscar for best director.

Two ILLIMO folk are making time on two of the hottest reality based competition shows on TV. Just announced this week was the cast of the 10th season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." One of them was actress/comic Niecy Nash (who lived for a few years in St. Louis when she was a teen). On Fox TV, Joliet, Illinois native Jermaine Sellers survived the second round of cuts on "American Idol's" 9th season. Sellers made the Top 24 two weeks ago and made it to the Top 20 last Thursday. He, along with the 10 male contestants who made it through, will perform tonite, Wednesday. And for those who say Sellers looks familiar, well, Sellers was on another reality-based talent competition show, BET's "Sunday Best" when he made the Top 5 in Season One in 2007.

UPDATE: The boys were switched from Wednesday to Tuesday and the girls from Tuesday to Wednesday due to a female contestant getting ill and having to admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. Also, Jermaine Sellers was booted off on Thursday along with John Park, who lives in Chi-town that we remissed in this report.

Glee” is moving from the television screens to concert halls. The closest ILLIMO stop will be in Chitown – May 25 and May 26 at Rosemont Theatre. And yes all the Glee cast is scheduled to appear. Go to
www.gleetour2010.com for more information.

The big STL story is the strange disappearance of STL native rapper/producer J Kwon. According to reports, the 24-year-old's label, Gracie Productions, has been unable to reach him for over a month.
In recent months, J-Kwon has been consistently releasing new music for fans on the net, however as the March 23 release date of his self-titled album is upon him.
.Anyone with information on the matter is urged to send in tips. A Twitter account, @WhereIsJkwon, has been set up to provide updates.
“J-Kwon is a big part of the Gracie family, and we are obviously increasingly worried and want to make sure he is ok," says Gracie Productions CEO/President Tony Bucher. "We’ve already received thousands of emails from fans and supporters who are worried about J-Kwon, and we want everyone to know how much we appreciate the love and support. If anyone has seen J-Kwon or has access to him, please let him know we are worried about him, and to please let us know everything is ok.”
After his 2004 album, Hood Hop, which featured the smash hit "Tipsy," J-Kwon released two projects in 2009 on Gracie Productions: Hood Hop 2 and Hood Hop 2.5.
His self-titled album is set to hit stores on March 23, 2010 via One Records. For more information, go towww.myspace.com/jkwon and www.gracieprod.com.
Wow we hope he is OK..

UPDATE: Stlhiphop.com announced Friday that he called in to the site's offices to say he is OK. Here is what was reported on the site:

Has the Sauce got too cold for its co-head partners--literally? Well could be. Catherine Neville(PICTURED) , co-founder and former editor in chief of
Sauce Magazine, has sold her interest in the publication to business partner and former relationship partner, Allyson Mace(a female).

Neville reportedly said that the sale had nothing to do with their breakup 18 months ago and that she has a different idea about where she would like to go with the Sauce Magazine concept. Sauce is a monthy publication with a circulation of 84,000.
Mace and Neville started SauceMagazine.com in 1999. Mace has been the magazine’s publisher and will be the interim editor while the publication and its related products are in transition.

STL native actress
Jessica Radloff, who currently lives in Hollywood, is on the self promotion rampage to try and land a part in the Three Men and baby franchise (her favorite films) with the 3rd installment called, “Three Men and a Bride” and playing the role, Mary. Reportedly the actress (who have been in bit parts in “The Young and the Restless,” “Entourage” “Campus Ladies,” and “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”) is doing whatever it takes to land the role even making up a website with a mock movie poster showing her in the role and written endorsements from colleagues and execs in the movie biz. She’s gotten some press attention for her effort and has started a charitable effort to get people to become fans of her Facebook page, “Cast Jessica Radloff as Mary in Three Men and a Bride.” She’s donating 50 cents per fan to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and so far has racked up a $300 donation.

Rubin turns in a winning performance as Holiday, without at any point looking or sounding like Holiday. Rubin, an accomplished jazz vocalist in her own right, is still doing Rubin here, but while telling Holiday’s story. It’s a tricky mix, one fans will either appreciate, or not. We chose to appreciate it.”

PRO-MO-CIAL-I-CIOUS. Which promoters/socialites got it in this week? Promoter Nancy "Ice" Murry and radio personality Tammie Holland (TIE) and R&B singer/producer Bradd Young and radio personlaity/promoter Tony J (TIE)

Nancy "Ice"Murry. (LEFT) As creator of Ice Entertainment, Murry, with the contagious smile, is coming off from a showcase for R&B sensation Bradd Young at its White Ice event at the Ambassador last Saturday, is continuing with the sequel to its White Ice Event this Friday at CLUB EXO where they are seeking more female and male models for its Ice Angels Modeling Team (SEE ILLIMO BITZ ABOVE AND MARCH 2010 AUDITION BITZ in the ONGOING BTZ SECTION).

Tammie Holland. This lovely radio personality of Tony Scott Show on Majic 104.9 FM always gets it in on the show weekdays, but she is branchng out into the field of acting when she makes her debut in the hit play Pocketbook Monologues that will be staged at Forest Park College March 6 (EVENTZ BELOW) and she was seen on TV Tuesday with her radio colleague Tony Scott in KSDK Channel's 5's one minute segment feature IM JUST SAYIN where radio personalities talk freely about a topic of their choice.

Bradd Young. (LEFT). This vivrant singer/producer/owner of Rockhouse ENT, is coming fresh off his hot performance as the featured act at Ice Entertainment's White Ice event at the Ambassador last Saturday. This weekend he will be all over the place. This Saturday, he is an invited guest to Imperial Events' Ezekiel Obasi's b-day party at the City (SEE EVENTZ BELOW), then on Sunday, Young is going to perform and see how many of the seven big awards he will win at the 3rd Annual Traffic Music Awards (He's the big nominee) that will take place at the Ambassador (SEE EVENTZ BELOW). But it will be more interesting to see if he will have time to attend all the award show because he is scheduled to make an appearance at June 5th's album release party at Black Label on the same nite (SEE ILLIMO BITZ ABOVE).

Tony J. (RIGHT) This swagged out radio personality does his thing weekdays at Hot 104.1 where he also does his now STL famous Traffica report. This Sunday he will change hats (akin to Tammie Holland of sorts) when he oversees his creation the 3rd Annual Traffic Music Awards where he will also host at the Ambassdor. He also gets in every Saturday nite (more like Sunday morning) at Club Casino in East St. Louis hosting and broadcasting on Hot 104.1 from the venue that he affectionately calls the spot, The Beano.

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ--at the NAACP Image Awards
Why was Keri Hilson performing with Wyclef during the Haiti tribute opening number
(Where was Lauryn Hill????) Why was Sherri Shepherd fawning over her Precious co-ctar Lenny Kravitz rubbing up on him (and Kravitz giving her shade) when they presented an award? Why was Sandra Bullock even nominated for an Image Award? Why does it seem like Berry Gordy and Cicely Tyson NEVER age (Both are 80!!!) ? Why did Anthony Robinson and Maxwell look like blood brothers and almost wearing the same black tux? Why was Jill Scott wearing a moo moo on stage? Why did LL Cool J seem uncomfortable after Wyclef said that he loved him after he won the Humanirium Award? Why did Chris Rock act like he was so humbled when he won for Best Documentary for "Good Hair"? and Why did he diss the Best Actress category by saying The Best Light Skinned Actress? Why did Mo'Niguqe win for Best Supproting Actress for a role that was not positive (The awards are for images that are postive)? And why did Precious director Lee Daniels just kept going with his accepatbnc speech for Best Picture when th edirectors were telling him to wrap it up and when the show was about to end and cutting into Mary Mary's performance ?
MORE WHYZ--Why did a SWIC male student have a Barbie backpack on and the Barbie figure had a small dress on it made of material? Why did some party people get out two cars in the drive thru line of Del Taco on Grand aand started dancing last Saturday? Why did anyone think the Smithsonian was going to accept the acquittal suit OJ Simposn wore when he was on trial in 1995? Why is Sarah Palin tryin to be a comic now? Why did Tavis Smiley and Al Sharpton get into some bickering and calling each other out of their names on Tom Joyner Morning Show recently? Why did that Kentucky Senator try to railroad Obama's unemployment extenion bill? And why did Senator John McCain tried to diss Obama during the health care debate and Obama had to put him in his place?
