Also next week, we will have a feature bitz story on poet and mover and shaker Xplicit during our break.

As we continue to celebrate the contributions of ILLIMO native women in the arts and entertainment field, this week we highlight the career of the late Oscar winning actress Shelly Winters.

Shelley Winters (August 18, 1920 – January 14, 2006) was an
American actress who appeared in dozens of films, as well as on stage and television; her career spanned over fifty years, until her death in 2006. Winters is probably most remembered for her roles in A Place in the Sun, The Big Knife, Lolita, The Night of the Hunter, Alfie, and The Poseidon Adventure
Winters was born Shirley Schrift in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Jewish parents Rose (née Winter), a singer with The Muny, and Jonas Schrift, a designer of men's clothing.[1] Her family moved to Brooklyn, New York when she was three years old.

Her first movie was What a Woman! (1943). Working in films (in mostly bit roles) through the 1940s, Winters first achieved stardom with her breakout performance as the victim of insane actor Ronald Colman in George Cukor's A Double Life, in 1948. She quickly ascended in Hollywood with leading roles in The Great Gatsby (1949) and Winchester 73 (1950), opposite James Stewart. But it was her performance in A Place in the Sun (1951), a departure from the sexpot image that her studio, Universal Pictures, was building up for her at the time, that first brought Winters her acclaim, earning a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
She garnered two Oscar wins.

As the New York Times obituary noted, "A major movie presence for more than five decades, Shelley Winters turned herself into a widely-respected actress who won two Oscars." Winters originally broke into Hollywood as "the Blonde Bombshell", but quickly tired of the role's limitations. She washed off her makeup and played against type to set up Elizabeth Taylor's beauty in A Place in the Sun, still a landmark American film. As the Associated Press reported, the general public was unaware of how serious a craftswoman Winters was. "Although she was in demand as a character actress, Winters continued to study her craft. She attended Charles Laughton's Shakespeare classes and worked at the Actors Studio, both as student and teacher." She studied in the Hollywood Studio Club, sharing the same bedroom with another beginner, Marilyn Monroe.

Winters suffered a significant weight gain later in life, frequently stating that it was a marketing tool, since there were plenty of prominent normal-weight older actresses but fewer overweight ones, and her obesity would enable her to find work more easily.
Audiences born in the 1980s knew her primarily for the autobiographies and for her television work, in which she played a humorous parody of her public persona. In a recurring role in the 1990s, Winters played the title character's grandmother on the ABC sitcom Roseanne. Her final film roles were supporting ones - she played a restaurant owner and mother of an overweight cook in Heavy (1995) alongside Liv Tyler and Debbie Harry, John Gielgud's wife in The Portrait of a Lady (1996), and a bitter nursing home administrator (whose charges included Charlton Heston, Carroll O'Connor and Shirley Jones) in 1999's Gideon.
And blackploitation fans remember her as playing the lesbian Mommie in the 1972 cult flick, “Cleopatra Jones.” She has a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1750 Vine Street, and was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame in 1992

THE BIG A&E story and STL story this week was: President Barack Obama visiting St. Louis Wednesday to continue his push for health care overhaul legislation. Mr. Obama first appeared at an invitation-only event for about 400 people at St. Charles High School.The president is expected to echo comments he made Monday in Philadelphia, where he blamed rising premiums on the insurance industry and took Republicans to task for not passing their own health care bill in previous years. Then Mr. Obama headed downtown for a fundraiser at Renaissance Grand on Washington Ave,. for U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill. The President's opponents are planned gatherings of their own. A tea party group protested downtown just before the fundraiser. At the same time, Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder and Congressman Todd Akin, both Republicans held a town hall meeting at the St. Charles Convention Center to talk about how the president's health care plan would affect Missouri's budget.

And speaking of Obama;s health care bill, Cape Gierardeau, Mo. native and conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh is
no fan of Democrats' plans to overhaul health care.
But this week, he went so far as to say he'd leave the country for Costa Rica if the administration's proposal passes. He would leave for medical care.
Hey he shouldn’t do us any favors. Hey why not he just vanish altogether!

Chitown talk show queen did up the Oscars first with her prime time special on ABC last Friday (which did not succeed in the ratings), being a presenter at the Oscars and having her post Oscars party special on her show. On Monday, she aired her sixth annual After-Oscars Party episode from the Kodak Theater -- site of the previous night's ceremony. Oprah talked with Sanda Bullock, Jeff Bridges, Christoph Waltz, writer George Fletcher and Mo’Nique (PICTURED)

Mo'Nique addressed why she didn't campaign for her award like other Hollywood insiders do. "Everybody kept saying, 'She won’t promote the movie,'" she explained. "I said, 'Well, do you know about this little show called Oprah Winfrey?' Because I’d done the show twice....It was just that not only am I a late-night talk show host, not only am I an actress, not only am I a stand-up comedian, I’m also a mother, I’m also a wife. So, it’s like 'Guys, we gotta make this make sense.'"

In related Oprah newz, she said after the Oscars on Sunday that she has a lot in common with Precious star and Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe. Oprah told People.com, "I saw myself in her. This whole roller coaster that happens to you when you're passionate about something -- she wasn't even thinking of being an actress; she just auditioned. And now here she is, being nominated alongside Meryl Streep, who is the greatest actress in the world, with Sean Penn reading her name. Only in America."
Sidibe wisely does not underestimate the importance of Oprah's support. When asked what it means for the talk show host to be introducing her at the ceremony, she said, "It means that I just might be a movie star."

Speaking of Oscars, the partly St. Louis filmed, “Up in the Air” starring George Clooney lost in all of its nominations.

Oak Park, Illinois native and Emmy winning actress Betty White has signed the contracts to be on an episode of
"Saturday Night Live. She will appear on "Saturday Night Live" in the near future, she confirmed to PEOPLE at Elton John's annual Oscars viewing party on Sunday night.
Facebook fans have been campaigning for her to do "SNL" -- an idea she called "ridiculous" just a few weeks ago -- ever since her comic turn in a Snickers ad during the Super Bowl. One Facebook page devoted to the cause has attracted half a million fans.White didn't offer any details about the "SNL" gig, and it remains unclear when she will appear -- or what it will entail.
Entertainment Weekly said she might appear on a special "Women of Comedy" episode with former "SNL" cast members Molly Shannon, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler -- but executive producer Lorne Michaels reportedly denied that.

UPDATE: Betty White will appear on SNL on May 8.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ spring season opener last week last Thursday in Jupiter, Florida against the New York Mets, did not start off with a win as the Redbirds lost 17 to 11. As of tonite, the team is 2-5, winning tonite against the Washington Nationals.

The Cards are struggling now that its star money superstars Albert Pujols (PICTURED) and Matt Holliday are on the injury list. Pujols has back stiffness. The three-time National League MVP has missed the last three games as a precaution. On Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals were hit by injury again when left fielder Matt Holliday was scratched from lineup with soreness in his right rib cage.Holliday, who signed a seven-year, $120 million contract in January, will be re-examined Thursday to determine the extent of the injury. Pujols, the National League's Most Valuable Player last season when the Cardinals won the NL Central, participated in the team's morning workout Wednesday but didn't play against Washington so his back would have time to recover.

As the Cards newest batting coach, Mark McGwire is in Florida with the team, Missouri legislators have voted unanimously to take down the Mark McGwire Highway sign that has a 5-mile stretch of I-70 since 1999, the year after Big Mac hit 70 home runs. But now that McGwire has come clean about his past the Missouri Senate has decided it's time for a change, and on Monday
it voted unanimously to do just that. The proposal would rename the road as the Mark Twain Highway.

Mark Twain? Can’t they do better than that?? At least name it for someone who was born in this century! How about Ozzie Smith? Wasn’t he MR ST LOUIS before Mark Mcgwire juiced his way to superstardom in St. Louis? Who do yawl think should have the Highway named after them?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In other sportz newz, ST. Louis native boxer Devon Alexander still remained undefeated as he knocked out Juan Urango Saturday in the eighth round knockout that improved his record to 20-0, with 13 knockouts. In victory, Alexander added the IBF crowned previously owned by the 29-year-old Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) to that of his own, and improved his status within an already, star-studded, and stacked 140-pound division.
"First of all, I want to thank God, first of all. He gave me this victory," said Alexander, who ran to one turnbuckle, jumped on it, and raised a fist to the crowd, before running to another side of the ring and doing the same thing. "I want to thank my mom right here. She's the most amazing woman in the world."Alexander is tentatively slated to face South Africa's 30-year-old Kaiser Mabuza (23-6-3, 14 KOs), who scored this past weekend's sixth-round knockout over Kendall Holt (25-4, 13 KOs) in an IBF eliminator bout.But his coach STL native Kevin Cunningham told FanHouse last week that he would like to match Alexander with 32-year-old, southpaw former world champion, Zab Judah, a former junior welterweight and welterweight world champion who recently ended a nearly 12-month layoff.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Meanwhile, the other STL boxer Cory Spinks (37-5-11KO) who was supposed to fight Cornelius Bundrage on the same bill with Alexander, is now slated to fight Bundrage on the March 26 edition of Friday Night Fights. The IBF junior middleweight recently hired Buddy McGirt as his new trainer, after Spinks split recently with long-time friend and trainer Kevin Cunningham (who now trains Alexander). Cunningham decided to part with Spinks after the fighter showed up 40 pounds overweight for camp, which was to lead to a now-abandoned fight with Bundrage on March 6.

In other sports newz,. Northern Iowa beat Wichita State in an ugly affair Sunday at the Arch Madness Fianls at Scott Trade Center. Iowa won 67-52 victory - their third conference title for the Big 12 slot. Meanwhile, Mizzou had no chance against Nebraska in the opening round of the Big 12 tournament on Wednesday and fell 75-60. In Rams newz, The Rams officially tendered strong safety Oshiomogho Atogwe last week at the lowest level possible as a restricted free agent — the right-of-first-refusal level. Should Atogwe get an outside offer from another team and the Rams decide not to match, the Rams would get no draft pick compensation.For now, the move saves the team $5.75 million. Had the Rams tendered Atogwe at any of the four other available levels — original draft pick, second-round draft pick, first-round draft pick, first- and third-round draft picks — Atogwe would have been due $6,976,000. Instead, at the right-of-first-refusal level, Atogwe gets only $1,226,000.

With his injury to his shoulder in last season, we guess 1 milli is better than no milli with a bum shoulder. Hello.

++++++++++++++++

The big non sports, STL A&E story was the announcement this week that the President Casino will be closing its doors July 1. Pinnacle Entertainment who owns the boat and the Missouri Gaming Commission reached an agreement to close it when it decided that fighting Missouri regulators over the President will hurt it in other states where it also does business.
Besides, they just opened River City Casino in Lemay and the Lumiere Place which is successful, so we are sure they are not hurting for departing the President.

National comics Arnez J.(ABOVE CENTER) , Earthquake (UPPER LEFT) , Sheryl Underwood (RIGHT) , and Jay Lamont (LOWER LEFT) are coming to the STL with “Superstars of Comedy’ March 12,at the Chaifetz Arena

Group member Marilyn Mcoo, who is married to Davis, will not attend along with Davis, because she recently fell and broke her hip and is currently recuperating from her injury.

Did anyone check out
Dog the Bounty Hunter to stop in St. Charles? We are sure no one of a "darker hue" attended. Also, did anyone check out 2 Live Crew At Lure Nightclub last Wednesday? Was Luke with them?

STL rapper Young Ro (PICTURED LEFT) and his label Black Pearl Entertainment were the big winners at the 3rd Annual Traffic Music Awards that were held Sunday at the Ambassador. Ro picked up three awards for Male Artist, Club Song for Donk that Booty and Radio Song for “Pull it Back.” His label picked up an award for Label of the Year. The frontrunner in nominations, Bradd Young only copped two awards for Song of the Year for “Grown Man Lovin: and R&B Male Artist. Sole winners were Murphy Lee, Mocha Latte, Loose Cannon, and Aloha to name a few. The St. Lunatics were shut out of its three nominations. But the big newz story of the Traffic Music Awards that overshadowed the show was the fight that occurred midway through the event. It occurred during the presentation of Comedian of the Year when several guys in the crowd started fighting. As a result, security immediately rushed to the scene with tasers tapping knees . It wasn’t clear on how the fight got started but it was speculation that the fight started soon after host and TMA creator Tony J who had the crowed to shout out their hoods. Meanwhile, backstage at that time, Rockhouse Ent’s Orlando Pretty Boy Watson (PICTURED) was in a tousle with security who thought he instigated the initial fight in the crowd. But that was false and the security quickly apologized for their mistake.
For more on the TMAs go to

In unrelated TMA newz, former St. Lunatic member Slodown, who presented the Publication of the Year with rapper Skiddalz, made an announcement on stage that he just created his own label Reject and his first artist signed was STL female rapper Skiddalz. It is still unknown as to why Slodown left his former group, but if the title of his record label is any indication, it seemed as though he may have been kicked out.

Speaking of St. Lunatics, its lead rapper Nelly had a Sweet 16 b-day bash for his daughter Chanell (PICTURED in red at her party) that has held Feb. 27 at Chase Park Plaza. Hmmm.

And speaking of Nelly, his sixth CD, “Let’s Get it: has been pushed from March to June 2010

And why are people so much up in arms that the Oscars did not give Farrah Fawcett a tribute? Why did Dangelo try and deny he likes trannies when he got caught soliciting a female police officer in West Village in NYC an area famous for tranny hookers? Why are Michael Jackson’s bodyguards trying to say MJ was a womanizer? And why is the MLK Bridge lane going west of St. Louis so narrow in between the cemented divider and the edge of the bridge?Why did Dan Rather say that Obama couldnt sell watermelons comparing that to Obama trying to get his healthcare bill passed? And why did Howard Stern and Robin Quivers say on their Sirrius radio show that Gabby Sibidie will never have a movie career cuz of her size and she already landed a weekly role in an upcoming Showtime series and has made another movie (and she got Oprah on her side.
