IT'S THURSDAY==A NEW DAY
TIME TO GET TOWNED!!! Still pray for those in Port au Prince and Chile!
We continue on our celebration of WOMEN HISTORY MONTH with ILLI Mo A&E women.
This week we highlight the late award winning poet/educator Gwendolyn Brooks.
Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks (June 7, 1917 – December 3, 2000) was an American writer. She was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1985.[1]Brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas. When Brooks was only six weeks old, her family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she grew up. Brooks eventually attended an integrated school, Englewood High School. In 1936, she graduated from Wilson Junior College. These four schools gave her a perspective on racial dynamics in the city that continued to influence her work.Brooks published her first poem in a children's magazine at the age of thirteen. When Brooks was sixteen years old, she had compiled a portfolio of around seventy-five published poems. Aged 17, Brooks stuck to her roots and began submitting her work to "Lights and Shadows", the poetry column of the Chicago Defender, an African-American newspaper. In 1943 she received an award for poetry from the Midwestern Writers' Conference. Her first book of poetry, A Street in Bronzeville, published in 1945 by Harper and Row, brought her instant critical acclaim. She received her first Guggenheim Fellowship and was one of the “Ten Young Women of the Year” in Mademoiselle magazine. In 1950, she published her second book of poetry,Annie Allen, which won her Poetry magazine’s Eunice Tietjens Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, the first given to an African-American.
After John F. Kennedy invited her to read at a Library of Congress poetry festival in 1962, she began her career teaching creative writing. She taught at Columbia College Chicago, Northeastern Illinois University, Elmhurst College, Columbia University, Clay College of New York, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1967, she attended a writer’s conference at Fisk University where, she said, she rediscovered her blackness. This rediscovery is reflected in her work In The Mecca, a book length poem about a mother searching for her lost child in a Chicago housing project. In The Mecca was nominated for the National Book Award for poetry. In addition to the National Book Award nomination and the Pulitzer Prize, Brooks was made Poet Laureate of Illinois in 1968.
In 1985, Brooks became the Library of Congress's Consultant in Poetry, a one year position whose title changed the next year to Poet Laureate. In 1988, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. In 1994, she was chosen as the National Endowment for the Humanities' Jefferson Lecturer, one of the highest honors for American literature and the highest award in the humanities given by the federal government. In 1995, she was presented with the National Medal of Arts. Other awards she received included the Frost Medal, the Shelley Memorial Award, and an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.Brooks was awarded more than seventy-five honorary degrees from colleges and universities worldwide. In 1995, she was honored as the first Woman of the Year by the Harvard Black Men's Forum.
The big A&E story involved Ch-town talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey. This week, settled a defamation suit filed against her that was scheduled for trial in Philadelphia next week. The talk show queen was sued by Lerato Nomvuyo Mzamane, who was the headmistress of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa until allegations in October 2007 that a dormitory matron sexually assaulted six girls.
Winfrey and Mzamane reportedly met privately in Chicago Wednesday and agreed to settle the case, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting.Their lawyers issued a joint statement saying the dispute was ended "peacefully." There was no mention of any financial settlement
No repeat of Mad Cow for Oprah on this one. And we are sure that Mzamane got a nice piece of the Oprah empire stash for keeping shut on her case against Oprah and her defamatory remarks as ruled by the Philly judge who ws going to try the case.
Regionally,Missouri is out of the NCAA race. It was bittersweet for Mizzou. Last week, they clenched a spot in the NCAA Tourney by beating Missouri knocking off Clemson 86-78. But last Sunday, MU lost in the second round to West Virginia, 68-59.
In related news, although Illinois State didnt advance to the NCAA tourney, the Fighting Illini beat Stony Brook 76-66 last week in a first-round NIT game.
In other sports newz, St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman Albert Pujols was back in the lineup Wednesday in the prelim games in Jupiter, Fla after two days after receiving an MRI and an anti-inflammatory shot injection Monday to calm recurring stiffness and discomfort in his lower back. His return will be based on how he gets through the pre-game workouts. Last week, ee was M.I.A. on the Jupiter, fla. mound due to nagging back problems. Pujols who supposed to start back from injury with Ryan Holliday against the Boston Red Sox and Houston was not in the lineup. A Cardinals official said Pujols was scratched from the lineup so that he could have his back examined after some stiffness Pujols missed a stretch of games with back stiffness earlier this spring, and he had several visits to a chiropractor for adjustments.
In related newz, whats up with the rumors that Phillies wants to do a trade of STL native Ryan Howard for Pujols after his free agency in two years? Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak was reported as saying on the rumors, "We're not trading him ... period."
Hmm, strong words indeed. Wonder if the bases will be ran differently if Pujols continue to have that "nag" in his back.
In non-sports newz, On the heels of her quickly sold-out concert at the Fox Theatre in January came news that award winning performer Lady Gaga will return to St. Louis during the 2010 leg of her North American Monster Ball tour.
It’ll take place July 17 at Scottrade Center.
She describes the new tour as more in line with a musical and less like a concert. It’s billed as being bigger and better than her recent version of the Monster Ball tour.
Wow, now we see why she's fainting on the stage. Whew!
MediaTakeOut.com received a SUPER-EXCLUSIVE report this week. According to the site reality star Kim Kardashian has been confiding with Chi-town rapper Kanye West. Kim and Kanye reportedly have been friends and "have feelings" for each other. Our insider is NOT certain whether Kim and Kanye have ever gotten romantic in the past. Its also reported that her ex New Orleans Saints’ Reggie Bush is turning red of Kim's relationship with Kanye. In fact, according to our snitch, the last time Reggie and Kim separated - it was because of a rumored romance with Kanye. The insider explained, "Reggie thought that [Kim] was cheating with Kanye. He found some suspicious texts and he broke it off with her."
Hmm, is it us , or does this sound like more juice for Kardshians’ reality show?

Hip-hop mogul Jay Z had the city of St. Louis in trance before a sold out crowd last Friday at the Scott Trade Center during his Blueprint 3 Tour. According to St. Louis Post Dispatch Pop Critic Kevin Johnson, the audience, "witnessed a modern legend at work, one who at 40 years of age should be past his prime. But Jay-Z continues viable and revered with his laid-back but effective presence and clear and distinct delivery." He performed most of his hits including his latest "New York State of Mind" and classics such as "Hard Knock Life" and closed out with "Encore.' Throughout his set opening acts Trey Songz and Young Jeezy joined him on stage to perform with him.
In unrelated Jay Z newz, it was rumored that the rap icon would make a surprise stop at the City on Washington after the concert, but that's all it was. Apparently one of Jay Z's musicians are buddies with STL event promoter and drummer Chris Stixx during Stixx's weekly A List Showcase at The City. It was hoped that through that connection, Jay Z would make a surprise appearance but it did not occur.
Speaking of Trey Songz, the budding sex symbol made an radio visit to Hot 104.1 before his show at Scott Trade Center to talk about his career with personality Staci Static.
And speaking of Static, she was nominated for the Metromix Competition and she is asking her fans to VOTE for her to win. She currently is in the second round of competition . For more info go to http://stlouis.metromix.com/micmadness

CELEB-SITE. This week we spotted R&B legend Ron Isley.
YOURS TRULY was in the Notifi Radio Studios Monday gettin prepped to record shows on Dwight Stone's show when all of a sudden, I hear music and singing in another room in the studio. Well, after one of our breaks, Stone and I went to where the music was coming from and opened the door (why ? we will explain later) to the music recording studio and saw two enginereers near the console and behind it was Mr. Biggs himself, Ron Isley, sitting with his pimp cane smiling and rocking to what he recorded. Sounded like some song called, "Sexy Girl" (picture the song "Who's That Lady" hip hopped up ). Oh and the reason why we entered the room? Cuz the engineers "stole" Stone's mic and he had to go out to his van and get another one out (luckilly he had another one) for our show. LOL
WORDZ TO THE WHYZ????????????????????
Why did that teen get on the P.A. mic at the New Jersey Walmart announcing all black people leave the store? Why does it seem tavis smiley has a beef against Obama? Why did STL rap trio June 5th do a blast off of male haters on its Facebook Page and then not say who they were talking about? Why are the Republicans in Congress and the Tea Baggers still trying to nit pick at Obama's signing of health care as the law? Why did singer Usher buy 16 year old Justin Bieber a car for his Sweet Sixteen? Why is Chris Brown begging his fans to call radio stations to play his new music? Why does American Idol look like a train wreck this season, singers and judges? Why does Mo’Nique keep saying she is a comedian and not an actress? Why is Jessica Simpson getting another reality TV show? Why did "106 and Park" co-host Rosci show up late at City Hall to host Revolve last Friday? Why are we just finding out now that the late Michael Jackson's estate had songs in the vault to cover 10 albums? Why are people claiming that Beyonce and Lady Gaga are vajj buddies? Why didn't comedian Joe Torry get a shout out at Karma Nightclub recently? And Why do we have a feeling al will be forgiven for Tiger Woods when he plays in the Master's Golf Tourney?
