Keep Haiti still in your prayers and giving!

This week in our ILLIMO Black History Month spotlight we highlight the talents of actress/director Kasi Lemmons.

Born February 24, 1961, Kasi Lemmons[ is an
American film director and actress, notable for her films Eve's Bayou, The Caveman's Valentine and Talk to Me.
Lemmons was born Karen Lemmons in
St. Louis, daughter of a poet/psychotherapist mother and a biology teacher father.

Lemmons began her professional career playing a hostage in the TV-movie "11th Victim" (1979). She then took several years off to study with The Lee Strasberg Institute, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre, NYU, UCLA and famed mime Marcel Marceau.

She returned to acting with a supporting role in Lanford Wilson's "Balm in Gilead" (1984) Off-Broadway, and a guest spot on the detective series "Spenser: For Hire" (1985). After attending film school at the New School for Social Research in NYC, Lemmons made her entrance into features by writing, directing, shooting and editing the documentary short "Fall From Grace" (1987).

The next year, she appeared in two drastically different films: "School Daze", Spike Lee's musical study of black-on-black prejudices; and "Vampire's Kiss", a dark comedy starring Nicolas Cage as a man who may be a vampire.

Lemmons continued to appear in high-profile Hollywood films including Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), as Jodie Foster's FBI cadet friend; "Candyman" (1992), as Virginia Madsen's research partner; and John Woo's "Hard Target" (1993), as a cop with a heart of gold.

She received her first leading role in the mock 'rapumentary' "Fear of a Black Hat" (1994), playing sociologist Nina Blackburn, who chronicles a year in the life of controversial rap group NWH (Niggaz With Hats). Lemmons has continued to work on stage and in TV, starring in an L.A. production of "Romeo and Juliet" and in the HBO original movie "Afterburn" (1992).

1997 marked a turning point for Lemmons. Having always wanted to be a writer, she had spent several years nurturing a script about a young girl's coming of age in the South. When it came time to film "Eve's Bayou", Lemmons put herself in contention as director. She fashioned a 20-minute short, "Dr. Hugo", starring her husband actor-director Vondie Curtis Hall, as an audition piece and convinced the producers to allow her to direct her own script. The result, what Lemmons has called "an African American Southern Gothic", was a well-acted, critically praised mood piece that heralded a new and exciting voice in films.

For her second film as a director, Lemmons reunited with Samuel L Jackson on the mystery thriller "The Caveman's Valentine" (2001).

Lemmons is married to actor and director Vondie Curtis-Hall.

THE BIG A&E NEWZ STORY this week was the Rams owners Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez made it official that the team's buying papers have dried and will be bought out by to Shahid Khan (PICTURED), the 55-year-old president of an auto-parts manufacturer, Flex-N-Gate, from Urbana, Ill.

When asked about the Rams and its future he said that he was a fan of ST. Louis sports and guaranteed that the team will stay in St. Louis even after the team's lease with the Edward Jones Dome expires in a few years.

Said Rosenbloom:"Lucia and I are happy and proud to welcome Shahid Khan to the Rams family. He is a man of achievement who we believe can make a great contribution to the National Football League."

Forbes magazine recently estimated the Rams franchise has a value of $913 million, though some experts have said a more realistic sale price will be closer to $750 million.

Rams executive vice president of football operations and chief operating officer, said the sale could be completed by as early as May.

Hmmm, with a moustache like Salvidore Dali, we guess you gotta trust him, eh? LOL

Hundred of thousands partied last Saturday in Soulard downtown to celebrate Mardi Gras for its parade and afterparties.

On Saturday, thousands of partygoers lined the streets of downtown St. Louis and the neighborhood for the annual parade with more than 100 floats that began near Busch Stadium and ended near the Anheuser-Busch/InBev brewery.

The theme was “Famous Couples” and the celebration featured the weddings, floats, former St. Louis football Cardinal greats Dobler and Hanifan as marshals, and impersonators of famous couples—Elvis and Priscilla--in costume, to name a few attractions.

It was reported the vent (which is reported as its biggest) that over 30 couples were actually married on a rolling float at the parade.

As far as the violations, the St. Louis Police reported 48 for being a minor in possession of alcohol, 12 for carrying a false ID, 11 for outstanding warrants varying from probation violations to theft, six for procuring alcohol for a minor, seven for peace disturbances, five for drunken driving, four for lewd conduct, two for urinating in public, one for assault, one for public exposure, one for failing to obey a police officer and one for destruction of private property.

Seven cars were towed for being parked in restricted areas, and 30 other vehicle owners were tracked down and agreed to move their vehicles before they were towed.

Police said 35 parking tickets were issued.

On Tuesday, Lumeiere Place sponsiored its Mardis Gras parade with its Light Up the Night Fat Tuesday Parade, that stepped off at 0at Broadway at the Edward Jones Dome and travelled south to Busch Stadium.

Black history was made this week in sports when Forest Park, Ill native Olympic swimmer Michael Wright (Forest Park, Ill.) won his first career title at this years Winter Olympics in Vancouver, canada, as the USA Diving Winter National Championships wrapped up with 1-meter events on Monday. He became the first African American to garner this feat.

Also, congrats to Chitown native speeed skater Shani Davis who Davis won gold, in the 1,000-meter speed-skating race. Davis is the first black individual medalist at any Winter Games four years ago in
Turin and now is the first skater ever to successfully defend a 1,000-meter Olympic title.

Oak Park , Ill native and Emmy Award winning actress Betty White is getting all kind of publicity these days especially during the Super Bowl when she starred in a Snickers commercial that showed she's game enough to get tackled and pushed into a mud puddle, one of the highlights of the commercial, But on Facebook, more than 320,000 members have joined the Facebook group “Betty White to Host ‘SNL' (please?)!” —

The Facebook group was created by member David Matthews. He reportedly wrote to “
SNL ” creator Lorne Michaels once he had gained 5,000 supporters; Michaels had not replied as of this blogging.

"I'm just amazed," White said from Las Vegas, where she was honored earlier this week by the Morris Animal Foundation at the P&G Pet Care luncheon. "I would think by now that they've had such an overdose of Betty White that they'd be throwing rocks instead."
The 88 year old actress said that she wouldn’t mind doing the show but "that would depend on scheduling and all that. But who knows? You can't ever say yes or no or never—you just wait to see what happens."

White also said she had no idea how the campaign got started.

We say why not? It couldn’t hurt. Plus she’s naturally funny. Have yawl seen the hosts who have been on there in recent times? BORE-DOM.

And speaking of history in sports, Joplin Mo native Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500 Sunday. He was the first Missourian to win the trophy and prize. He held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the beside the two NASCAR stoppages of well over two hours total to patch a pesky pothole between turns 1 and 2 of Daytona International Speedway.McMurray was overwhelmed and emotional when he spoke on his winning and it being a childhood dream come true and his struggles to make it in the sport. He said that his father had left before he won cuz of the two hour wait to fix the pothole and joked and said that his father should leave more often.

McMurray currently is on a whirlwind media tour and made appearances on Late Show with David Letterman and Live with Regis and Kelly in New York City.

He is next off to a race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

We wonder if he's going to Disneyland?

In other ILLMO sports newz, Today , Wednesday, is the first day of Spring Training for the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla. According to a report from KMOX, the surmised overflow of the public coming to check out the practice and see new baseball hitting coach Mark McGwire there has not occurred as of this blogging. Mostly the out of town media are there to flow McGwire around. He has not taken questions from reporters . He will wear his trademark number 25 jersey; no other Cardinal has worn the jersey since McGwire retired.

Last month, McGwire admitted in a statement sent to the Associated Press that he used PEDs. Even though McGwire hit 583 home runs in his career, Hall of Fame voters did not vote him into the Hall the past three years, likely because of the speculation over drug use.

Hmm, wonder why there’s no hoopla of McGwire? Maybe folk have got other things to do like—uh have a life?

The Obamas are on the March issue of Essence Magazine. In the issue, the first couple talks about how they deal with their daughters when it comes to education. This is there second time on the cover. The first was on the January issue.

Two basketball legends--cum--businessmen are venturing into new projects.

One is former Chicago Bulls superstar player and Hall of Famer Michael Jordan wants majority control of the Charlotte Bobcats from owner Bob Johnson. It was reported that Johnson is eager to sell the unprofitable club, and NBA commissioner David Stern said he expects a deal to be completed within two months.

But Jordan, who currently lives in Highland Park, Ill., has competition with former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos has made inquiries, but if that occurs it was speculate that Jordan may no longer want minority ownership of the team.

That is, all of nothing.

The other is former Los Angeles Laker superstar and business mogul Magic Johnson is in talks to buy EBONY Magazine but there has been no definitive agreement with Johnsons Publishing Company. If the deal goes through, Johnson would fold the publisher into Magic Johnson Enterprises. Its reported that ad revenue at Ebony declined 38 percent to $35.5 million last year on a 39 percent drop in ad pages, according to Publishers Information Bureau.

Well, lets hope Magic can do just that to Ebony cuz we need this mag to keep on publishin just for black history sake!

Then it spilled out of the back door and continued outside.”

Hmm, we can see Nelly's bodyguard Big B gettin into some scuffle if yawl know how he gets. lol

In related news, during Super Bowl weekend Nelly appeared as an ESPN VIP correspondent at the magazine’s Super Bowl party and got predictions from a list of celebrities in attendance. He conducted interviews with stars such as Jermaine Durpi , , Ne-Yo , Serena Williams and Terrell Owens.

And in more Nelly newz,
Nelly's Apple Bottoms clothing brand has finally selected 18-year-old model Anna Perret as "Miss Apple Bottoms 2010: The Netherlands" after participating in a fashion show that debuted the Apple Bottoms Fall/Winter 2010 collection. The 15 finalists presented the collection in front of a crowd of 1,500 onlookers, which included international celebrities, retail buyers, fans and a jury panel.

Locally, Chingy will be joining the ST. Lunatics and promoters Close to Famous for its event celebrating the Derrty Girlz Friday at Black Label (758 S. 4th St.).

And in other Ching a ling newz, what was up with mediatakeout reporting Chingy taking a camera pic of himself with nothin buit his draws on and posting on his website? Looked like he was "one call away" from being inside a "holiday inn" gettin "right thurr" in the picture. LOL

Charges are dropped on Rams star running back Steven Jackson and will not be charged with domestic violence crimes, TMZ has
learned. The St. Louis Ram's ex-girlfriend had alleged that Jackson beat her when she was nine months pregnant until she was "bleeding heavily."
Jackson quickly
denied the claim, calling the accusation "untrue" and "especially hurtful because those who truly know me know that those actions would be out of character for me."According to TMZ, "Las Vegas police tell us there's simply not enough evidence to move forward with the case."

WE TOLD YA he wouldnt be charged. Too much doubt up front!

St. Louis native CBS news anchor Russ Mitchell is still recuperating from an ankle breakage while falling on ice on a sloped driveway of his home in Kirkwood last month. He called 911 and the St. Louis emergency and medical personnel took him to Missouri Baptist Hospital. Because Mitchell’s main residence is in New York City, doctors decided he should have his surgery there so he could get the follow-up care he would need.

He said the crew at Missouri Baptist wrapped his ankle, gave him crutches and caught a flight out of town for his surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital and then spent two days in the hospital. Mitchell anchored the “CBS Evening News” soon after but will not be able to hit the road for his new national gig for a few weeks

"I feel fine," Mitchell tells TVNewser via email. "It smarts...but my family is taking great care of me." Mitchell broke his ankle in three places after he "slipped on a patch of ice" on his driveway.

The shows taped in early January and on Friday, February 12 millions of people across the nation watched him win the College Championship.

Yozamp actually missed the Final Jeopardy! question on that show, but he had won so much money throughout the tournament he still took the title. He said he will use the money he won to pay for medical school and he is also going to France this summer.

We guess this Hockey Ad Hoc (get it, LOL) is upset that more folk will crowd down there and more folk being able to get autographs from hockey players. In other words, more people in competition of getting money from those John Hancocks and having to share the market. We say let them do like their heroes on the ice and fight it out. TMP!

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ?????????????????????????????????
Why is Tiger Woods waiting til now to talk about his situation? And why do we get the feeling it will be nothing that he will reveal that we don;t already know? Why is director KevinSmith on a tirade after SW Airlines took him off a flight cuz he was too big and needed to pay for an exyra seat initially? Why was pop rocker John Mayer crying on stage recently cuz of his racial slur remarks he said (saying the words fags and niggers) in an interview with Playboy magazine? Why did Usher wear a black abs sculpted superhero styled vest and black Capris during his (lackluster) performance at the All Star Game? Why isn’t there any gas at Mobil station on Clayton Rd and Big Bend in Clayton? Speaking of Clayton, why are we just finding out that the makers of Zhu Zhu toys are based in Clayton? Why hasnt Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels have yet to respond to the Facebook campaign to make Betty White host the show? Why did Monique say that the only award that she really cares about is the Image Award? Why isn’t Olympic champion and black figure skater Shani Davis not getting any love from the media at the Winter Olympics? Why did Kym Whitley grab STL comic Jovan Bibbs butt after she introduced him when she gave him a hug just and was about to walk up stage at the House of Comedy? Why did the after party for Eddie Levert at Jazz Spot look like a mix between a Players Ball and family reunion? And why werent the other two OJays members there? Why do people think just cuz they have an SUV or anti lock breaks that they wont slide on icy roads? Why are some people on Facebook begging folk to vote for them for a Notice Me Award? Why did the media report Bill Clinton's heart attack scare as thoug he was about to die? And why has the remake of We are the World for Haiti receieved such harsh criticism and backlash from the public?

ADDED: Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them

by Christopher Durang directed by Marty Stanberry

Christopher Durang turns political humor upside down with this hilarious and provocative satire about America 's "War on Terror." Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them tells the story of a young woman suddenly in crisis: Is her new husband, whom she married after a drunken night at Hooters, a terrorist? Or just crazy? Or both? Is her father's hobby of butterfly collecting really a cover for his involvement in a shadow government? Don't feel guilty about laughing hard at this new black comedy for an era of yellow, orange and red alerts.
