This week in our ILLIMO Black History Month spotlight we highlight the talents of actress/director Kasi Lemmons.
Born February 24, 1961, Kasi Lemmons[ is an American film director and actress, notable for her films Eve's Bayou, The Caveman's Valentine and Talk to Me.
Lemmons was born Karen Lemmons in St. Louis, daughter of a poet/psychotherapist mother and a biology teacher father.
Lemmons began her professional career playing a hostage in the TV-movie "11th Victim" (1979). She then took several years off to study with The Lee Strasberg Institute, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre, NYU, UCLA and famed mime Marcel Marceau.
She returned to acting with a supporting role in Lanford Wilson's "Balm in Gilead" (1984) Off-Broadway, and a guest spot on the detective series "Spenser: For Hire" (1985). After attending film school at the New School for Social Research in NYC, Lemmons made her entrance into features by writing, directing, shooting and editing the documentary short "Fall From Grace" (1987).
The next year, she appeared in two drastically different films: "School Daze", Spike Lee's musical study of black-on-black prejudices; and "Vampire's Kiss", a dark comedy starring Nicolas Cage as a man who may be a vampire.
Lemmons continued to appear in high-profile Hollywood films including Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), as Jodie Foster's FBI cadet friend; "Candyman" (1992), as Virginia Madsen's research partner; and John Woo's "Hard Target" (1993), as a cop with a heart of gold.
She received her first leading role in the mock 'rapumentary' "Fear of a Black Hat" (1994), playing sociologist Nina Blackburn, who chronicles a year in the life of controversial rap group NWH (Niggaz With Hats). Lemmons has continued to work on stage and in TV, starring in an L.A. production of "Romeo and Juliet" and in the HBO original movie "Afterburn" (1992).
1997 marked a turning point for Lemmons. Having always wanted to be a writer, she had spent several years nurturing a script about a young girl's coming of age in the South. When it came time to film "Eve's Bayou", Lemmons put herself in contention as director. She fashioned a 20-minute short, "Dr. Hugo", starring her husband actor-director Vondie Curtis Hall, as an audition piece and convinced the producers to allow her to direct her own script. The result, what Lemmons has called "an African American Southern Gothic", was a well-acted, critically praised mood piece that heralded a new and exciting voice in films.
For her second film as a director, Lemmons reunited with Samuel L Jackson on the mystery thriller "The Caveman's Valentine" (2001).
Lemmons is married to actor and director Vondie Curtis-Hall.

Oak Park , Ill native and Emmy Award winning actress Betty White is getting all kind of publicity these days especially during the Super Bowl when she starred in a Snickers commercial that showed she's game enough to get tackled and pushed into a mud puddle, one of the highlights of the commercial, But on Facebook, more than 320,000 members have joined the Facebook group “Betty White to Host ‘SNL' (please?)!” —
The Facebook group was created by member David Matthews. He reportedly wrote to “SNL ” creator Lorne Michaels once he had gained 5,000 supporters; Michaels had not replied as of this blogging.
.
"I'm just amazed," White said from Las Vegas, where she was honored earlier this week by the Morris Animal Foundation at the P&G Pet Care luncheon. "I would think by now that they've had such an overdose of Betty White that they'd be throwing rocks instead."
The 88 year old actress said that she wouldn’t mind doing the show but "that would depend on scheduling and all that. But who knows? You can't ever say yes or no or never—you just wait to see what happens."
White also said she had no idea how the campaign got started.
We say why not? It couldn’t hurt. Plus she’s naturally funny. Have yawl seen the hosts who have been on there in recent times? BORE-DOM.

And speaking of history in sports, Joplin Mo native Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500 Sunday. He was the first Missourian to win the trophy and prize. He held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the beside the two NASCAR stoppages of well over two hours total to patch a pesky pothole between turns 1 and 2 of Daytona International Speedway.McMurray was overwhelmed and emotional when he spoke on his winning and it being a childhood dream come true and his struggles to make it in the sport. He said that his father had left before he won cuz of the two hour wait to fix the pothole and joked and said that his father should leave more often.
McMurray currently is on a whirlwind media tour and made appearances on Late Show with David Letterman and Live with Regis and Kelly in New York City.
He is next off to a race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
We wonder if he's going to Disneyland?

In other ILLMO sports newz, Today , Wednesday, is the first day of Spring Training for the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla. According to a report from KMOX, the surmised overflow of the public coming to check out the practice and see new baseball hitting coach Mark McGwire there has not occurred as of this blogging. Mostly the out of town media are there to flow McGwire around. He has not taken questions from reporters . He will wear his trademark number 25 jersey; no other Cardinal has worn the jersey since McGwire retired.
Last month, McGwire admitted in a statement sent to the Associated Press that he used PEDs. Even though McGwire hit 583 home runs in his career, Hall of Fame voters did not vote him into the Hall the past three years, likely because of the speculation over drug use.
Hmm, wonder why there’s no hoopla of McGwire? Maybe folk have got other things to do like—uh have a life?

Did yawl know that there was a secret society going on in the STL where hockey fans hangout at the Westin Hotel on Spruce Street in downtown ST. Louis and cop autographs ofrom NHL players during the Blues home games? KMOX exposed this secret autograph ring and from what he heard this "puck club" was not pleased getting outed. We guess this Hockey Ad Hoc (get it, LOL) is upset that more folk will crowd down there and more folk being able to get autographs from hockey players. In other words, more people in competition of getting money from those John Hancocks and having to share the market. We say let them do like their heroes on the ice and fight it out. TMP!

Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them tells the story of a young woman suddenly in crisis: Is her new husband, whom she married after a drunken night at Hooters, a terrorist? Or just crazy? Or both? Is her father's hobby of butterfly collecting really a cover for his involvement in a shadow government? WORDZ TO THE WHYZ?????????????????????????????????
Why is Tiger Woods waiting til now to talk about his situation? And why do we get the feeling it will be nothing that he will reveal that we don;t already know? Why is director KevinSmith on a tirade after SW Airlines took him off a flight cuz he was too big and needed to pay for an exyra seat initially? Why was pop rocker John Mayer crying on stage recently cuz of his racial slur remarks he said (saying the words fags and niggers) in an interview with Playboy magazine? Why did Usher wear a black abs sculpted superhero styled vest and black Capris during his (lackluster) performance at the All Star Game? Why isn’t there any gas at Mobil station on Clayton Rd and Big Bend in Clayton? Speaking of Clayton, why are we just finding out that the makers of Zhu Zhu toys are based in Clayton? Why hasnt Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels have yet to respond to the Facebook campaign to make Betty White host the show? Why did Monique say that the only award that she really cares about is the Image Award? Why isn’t Olympic champion and black figure skater Shani Davis not getting any love from the media at the Winter Olympics? Why did Kym Whitley grab STL comic Jovan Bibbs butt after she introduced him when she gave him a hug just and was about to walk up stage at the House of Comedy? Why did the after party for Eddie Levert at Jazz Spot look like a mix between a Players Ball and family reunion? And why werent the other two OJays members there? Why do people think just cuz they have an SUV or anti lock breaks that they wont slide on icy roads? Why are some people on Facebook begging folk to vote for them for a Notice Me Award? Why did the media report Bill Clinton's heart attack scare as thoug he was about to die? And why has the remake of We are the World for Haiti receieved such harsh criticism and backlash from the public?

Just so you know yes I/we do read your post there are about 40+ of us who use our mobiles for everything and most of us do have the same subscriber. We all grew up in STL, but our careers have been blessed and took us away from STL. We like to read your post for several reasons:they give us a sense of home, the entertainment aspect there and the name OUTTOWN is catching to us because we are the out-of-towners, sort of speaking. Lol. Marcus again thanks, take care and may God bless you, your family and your career.
