OUT 777--ILLIMO A&E BITZ

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

ITS WEDNESDAY

TIME TO GET TOWNED!

Please continue to pray and support the Haitian relief effort!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As we enter February, it is Black History Month. So to commemorate, instead of going the usual route of highlighting the “ILLIMO stars” of Black History Month (Maya, Miles, Dunham) from the ILLI and the MO, we would like to showcase other notable black artists who are also from this area.

This week, we commend the late actress Helen Martin.

Helen Martin was born in
St. Louis, and a Broadway character actress for many decades, debuting in Orson Welles' production of Native Son in 1941. She appeared in at least a dozen Broadway shows including Jean Genet's "The Blacks", Raisin from 1973 to 1975, Ossie Davis' Purlie Victorious (and later the musical version, which was called Purlie), The Amen Corner and Tennessee Williams' Period of Adjustment. She was an original member of the American Negro Theater.

She first became famous later in life for her guest role as Wanda on the television series Good Times, and later as the wisecracking neighbor Pearl Shay on the television sitcom 227. She also played on the short run sitcoms Baby, I'm Back (as mother in-law, Luzelle) and That's My Mama; as Loc Dog's grandma, Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996), the matronly grandmother Mama Doll in the 1998 film Bulworth, and the no-nonsense grandmother in the film Hollywood Shuffle.
Helen Martin died in 2000 at the age of 90.

THIS WEEK the biggest ILLIMO Bitz story this week was President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address speech last Wednesday that was televised on several stations and streamed on various news websites .

According to the Nielsen’s ratings, about 48 million viewers watched Obama's first State of the Union address on 11 networks, with Fox TV drawing the biggest share. The viewership was 7 percent lower than for President George W. Bush's first such address in 2002 but 5 percent higher than for President Bill Clinton's inaugural State of the Union speech in 1994.
From 9-10 p.m. EST, more than 9.7 million people watched the hour-plus speech on Fox, with ABC drawing 7.6 million viewers, NBC 7.2 million and CBS 6.2 million, according to preliminary Nielsen

Among the cable news networks, Fox News was the leader with 5.7 million, followed by CNN with 3.3 million and MSNBC with 2.4 million. The speech also was carried live on Telemundo, Univision, BET and CNBC.

In unrelated Obama newz, before his State address, he and Vice President Joe Biden caught a college b-ball game at Verizon Center in D.C. to watch Georgetown take on Duke Obama's personal assistant, Reggie Love, played basketball at Duke and was also attending the game.

There, it was reported that Obama shook hands with several fans as he entered the arena, and sat in a front-row seat (and not the VIP box) with the crowd. And you know security and the Secret Service was on the job while there with fans having to pass through metal detectors and cars being searched as they entered the building's garage.

Wow,if we were near the President, we don’t know if we woulda spent more time watching Obama or the game. LOL

In other newz, football quarterback Kurt Warner announced his expected retirement from the NFL Friday after twelve years in the profession. The former rams quarterback became a superstar while with the
St. Louis Rams in 1999, Warner was thrust into the role of starting quarterback after Trent Green suffered a season-ending injury and leading the "Greatest Show on Turf" to their first of three consecutive 500 point seasons, an NFL record as well as assisting with the team’s winning the Superbowl in 2000. he also led the Arizona Cardinals to a Superbowl in 2009 (sort of a bookended decade of wins) It was speculated that Warner was going to retire after suffering a concussion in one of the last games he played this season.

Hmm, we wonder how much of his multimillions we will get for quitting early?

The other big story also was sports related regarding ST. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson. Last week, Jackson’s ex girlfriend was filed a suit against Jackson claiming he abused her while she was pregnant—NINE MONTHS AGO!
His ex boo Supriya Harris is claiming that he beat her while she was nine months pregnant – are completely false. According to CBS Sports’ website, she filed a voluntary statement with Las Vegas police this saying Jackson repeatedly pushed her to the ground in March 2009 and bloodied her hip. Harris faxed her statement, but did not file an official police report and that an investigation would not begin until she did. Harris said Jackson "flung" her against a door until Jackson's nephew interceded. She told police Jackson later urged her to say she was injured during a fall in the shower.
Jackson—who was replaced in the 2010 Pro Bowl by Niners’ Frank Gore Sunday stemming from his season injuries-- called the accusations "untrue." Harris said she would take a polygraph test and challenged Jackson to do the same. If the accusations are proven true and Jackson is charged for the crime. He could be suspended from the NFL’s next season.

OK. Here’s our take. Why did the girlfriend wait so long to file—months and months after the incident supposedly took place? From reports it was speculated that she didn’t get last month’s child support payment for their child and she got upset. OK, is that was the case, then why didn’t she file a suit against him for not paying child support? If any defense lawyer take this case, they are going to have to think how is she going to be taken seriously by the judge on her domestic violence charge? Reports are the investigation would start after she filed so now Jackson has to deal with this upcoming probe as he may face a trial and possible suspension from his bread and butter.
Now don’t get us wrong, if Jackson did abuse her, that is wrong. If he asked her to cover it up when she had gone to the hospital fro treatment, that was wrong on his and her part. She should have filed right then and there after it happened. And whose to say, she didn’t provoke or assault him first when the incident happened? There’s a lot of doubt in all this and we feel that the case will probably be dismissed and Jackson will seek treatment or counseling and pay back child support because that’s all she wanted in the first place.

.
In other Rams news, its kicker Josh Brown will kick-off the 17th annual Beggin’ Pet Parade and “Tail”gating Party on February 7 through the streets of Soulard. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. with a one-of-its-kind Beggin’ float leading the way. The parade concludes at Soulard Market Park.

++++++++++++++++++++

The big non sports story with ILLIMO ties was the partly STL shot film, “Up in the Air” was nominated for six Oscars this week including Best Picture, Best actor (for Clooney) Best Director (For Jason Reitman) Best Adapted Screenplay, and two Supporting Actress nods for Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.

St. Louis native actor Jon Hamm hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time last Saturday (the fist was last season). One of the funnier sketches was his impression of newly elected Massachusetts senator Scott Brown , depicting the one-time Cosmo model as an irresistible flirt. One by one, Democratic lawmakers are driven to distracted by fantasies about the new Republican (male and female).

The skit ends with a bit of a pointed criticism of Democrats, with on of the reps asking, "Now are we going to focus on running this country or are we going to waste our time thinking about Scott Brown?" The party leaders opt for the latter. Brown told National Review Online that the skit was "pretty funny."

The ILLIMO component on Project Runway this season is gone. China born, Chitown resident Ping Wu was out last week on Project Runway in the show’s 3rd episode.

Grammy Award winning Soul and gospel great, Al Green, will headline Variety the Children’s Charity’s 44th annual “Dinner with the Stars,” on April 24 at the Chase Park Plaza.

The postponed Owl City concert at the Pageant has been rescheduled for May 5. It was reported that the “laptop” artist had to cancel his show due to having kidney stones removed.

St. Louis native jazz great and educator Clark Terry received the Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy Sunday at Kodak Theatre Sunday. He was formally acknowledged during the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards telecast on CBS.Considered to be one of the early pioneers to use a flugelhorn in jazz, Terry is a world-class trumpeter, flugelhornist, educator, and NEA Jazz Master. He has performed for seven U.S. presidents, and was a jazz ambassador for State Department tours in the Middle East and Africa. He has received two Grammy certificates, three Grammy nominations, 14 honorary doctorates, keys to cities, lifetime achievements and halls of fame awards.

And speaking of Grammy Awards, Chitown native Jennifer Hudson performed at the award ceremony for a moving tribute to Michael Jackson singing “Earth Song” along with Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson and Carrie Underwood. After the Grammies, the now svelte singer actress (who lost over 50 pounds) gathered along with over 70 artists to cut a remake of the Quincy Jones/Lionel Richie/Michael Jackson penned charity anthem < “We Are the World” in the same studio that was used to record the original song in 1985. The song was originally set to commemorate the songs 25th anniversary (released in April 1985) but after the tragic earthquake in Haiti hit, the single will now benefit to the Haitian relief.
Also joining Hudson was Chitown rapper Kanye West (who was a no show at the Grammies), St. Louis native Akon as well as Barbara Streisand, Janet (via digital vocal input)Pink, Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, the Jonas Brothers, Tony Bennett, and Lil Wayne to name a few . The single is scheduled to be release during the opening of the Winter Olympics later on this month.
In other J Hud newz, she is set to play Winnie Mindela in South Africa in the controversial biopic ."Winnie” which is adapted from Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob's biography "Winnie Mandela: A Life," Filming is set for April/May.
The project has gotten bad publicity after it was discovered that Winnie Mandela was upset that she was not consulted on the script and that Hudson, a non-South African, was playing the role (Hmmm, this reminds us of the stink South Africans made when Whoopi Goldberg starred and produced the film version of the South African based Broadway production of Sarafina.)
To see Hudson;s rousing rendition of I Will Always Love You on BET Honors go to http://neonlimelight.com/2010/02/02/jennifer-hudson-performs-tribute-to-whitney-houston-during-3rd-annual-bet-honors/

We heard that actor/dancer Columbus Short gave his fans the “short" end of his sexiness when he made his scheduled appearance at Karma Nightclub during the venue's Friday Night Fixx event last Friday. From a source, Short wore a scraggly beard, black jacket, wrinkled white tee and jeans. He was cordial to his fans and all but for the most part they were disappointed cuz the ladies were expecting to see him rock his swagger, clean shaven, movie star look.

Sikeston , Mo native and former "America's Got Talent" winner Neal E. Boyd will be back in the area where he grew up next week to perform with the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra.
The concert at the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus stage in Cape Girardeau is Feb. 5. If you’ve been watching KSDK news lately you probably didn’t see reporter Jasmine Huda there. Well, that’s because the St. Louis native didn’t come to an agreement with KSDK on her contract so she quit last week. Huda was hired soon after longtime anchor Karen Foss quit in 2007. According to columnist Deb Peterson of stltoday.com, Huda still may get paid from KSDK cuz she has a six month, no compete clause in her contract meaning she can’t go elsewhere for employment for six months and that a local Tv station is ready to hire her after the gag is lifted.
Hmm, well there are three other stations, Fox 2, KMOV and the CW. Which one do you think is vying for her?

Notifi Records and Radio co-CEO Ira Dewitt (lady) and comic Jessie Taylor

CELEB-SITE. Which national celebrity was spotted this week in the STL? The Bad Girls' Club's Natalie Nunn.

Natalie Nunn was in town last Friday to guest judge MPAC's Eye Candy contest at the Loft. After the oparty closed shop at 3 am , we heard that Nunn got her party on on the East Side with a few STL stars at Club Plush. One of thos STL stars was Mocha Latte who told OUTTOWN that Nunn told Latte that she heard that she ran the STL. As a result, the ladies shared hugs (and no spitting was done by Nunn. LOL) We didnt get any major scoop on Nunn but mostly she was very nice to her STL contingents.
