Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd was recently released last week by a federal judge on $100,000 cash bond, the day after he was charged with accepting a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover federal agent posing as a drug supplier.
Under an agreement with federal prosecutors, Hurd reportedly had to post the full $100,000 in cash before he was released from custody. He appeared in federal court last Thursday in
Prior to his arraignment, Hurd, whose ankles were in shackles in court, had reportedly spent the last two nights in the
Hurd’s wife, Stacee, was present for the brief bond hearing and appeared to have tears in her eyes afterwards. Hurd’s lawyers ushered her into a conference room and told reporters she would not be talking to the news media.
Hurd’s lawyer, Brett Greenfield, reportedly told reporters as he left the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse that Hurd wanted to personally dispel rumors that he was dealing drugs to Bears teammates and other NFL players.
The Bears placed Hurd on waivers, the first step toward cutting him from the team.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Young Kim told Hurd he must "maintain or seek employment" while on bond.

If ultimately convicted, Hurd could face between five and 40 years in prison. The wide range in sentencing would allow a judge to consider such factors as sentencing recommendations from prosecutors and probation officers;
Hurd's past criminal record, if he has one; whether anyone was hurt because of Hurd's alleged drug dealing; and whether Hurd shows remorse. Per federal truth-in-sentencing policies, Hurd would have to serve at least 85% of a sentence.

Frank Lucas?We have a feeling Hurd’s attorney may ask a lesser sentence for his squeal on his dealer. We are sure when this case goes to trial, it will make national headlines as did Blago’s. We are sure those NFL players who dealt with Hurd is shaking in their cleated shoes as well.

St Louis Rams wide receiver Austin Pettis was suspended without pay this week for four games for violating the NFL’s rules on performance-enhancing substances.by using Adderall, a stimulant that is prescribed to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Pettis, a rookie from Boise State who has made three starts this season and has 27 catches for 256 yards, reportedly apologized to the Rams, teammates and fans “for making a poor decision” in a statement to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Pettis, will not be eligible to return until after the Rams’ second game next season, though he can participate in offseason and preseason practices and games.
