St. Louis native and Emmy Award winning sports broadcaster Bob Costas made newz for his controversial interview Monday with former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky that was aired Monday on Brian Williams’ new newsmag show “Rock Center.” The story made newz for Sandusky said things that mayhave incriminated him before going to trial on his alleged sexual molestation of young boys during his tenure at Penn State.

According to reports, in a phone interview Tuesday, Costas said he was set to interview Joseph Amendola, Sandusky's lawyer, when Amendola, about 20 minutes before their scheduled talk, asked Costas if he'd like to talk by phone to Sandusky. Costas says there were "no restrictions" and he told Amendola, "You realize this questioning will be pointed. And he said, fine." Costas says the attorney also told him that with his client having already "been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion," he wanted to present Sandusky "as a person."

Costas said of the last-minute switch: "Much of what I'd prepared for Amendola could be redirected. But a lot was off the cuff. … I was determined to not get bogged down in the particulars. I thought: What are the questions the viewers might want answered?"

Appropriately, Costas says he has "no concern" about whether the interview might be used in a future trial of the ex-Penn State assistant football coach, who is facing child sex abuse charges. Sandusky told Costas he's "innocent of those charges" but also said "I have done some of those things" such as "horsing around" when showering with kids.

Costas largely is keeping his own opinions to himself. "A lot of people would conclude that Sandusky is having difficulty coming to grips with his own behavior," Costas says. "Even the very minimum he acknowledges is troubling and inappropriate."

This interview was very bizarre in that Sandusky saying he had no problem horsing around with youngboys and regretting showering with them. We are sure the interview will be used for the prosecutors. But our question is, what was Sandusky’s attorney thinking having Sandusky even have his client speak so semi candidly about the allegations. Not a good look for Sandusky

Springfield, Mo bred actor Brad Pitt who shocked fans on Australian TV when he said that he would retire from movies in three years when he turns 50, has clarified his comments saying that he hasn’t put ‘an exact deadline’ on retirement.

Earlier, in an interview on the Australian version of “60 Minutes,” Pitt said his days in front of the camera are counted, adding that he hoped to switch his focus to producing movies.

While promoting his latest film ‘Moneyball,’ Pitt said his retirement plans were not as definite as they were perceived to be, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I wasn’t putting an exact deadline on my expiration date, but I just see it coming and I do have an interest in the producing side,” The New York Post quoted him as saying.

He said his movie-star clout could allow him, as a producer, to tell “complex stories that might have difficulty getting made in the current system”.

Chicago talk show queen and network owner Oprah Winfrey received an honorary Oscar for her charitable work last Saturday in what she called an unimaginable moment for a black woman who grew up poor in Mississippi and rose to the top of Hollywood stardom.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences annually bestows its Governors Awards on people who have made an impact in the industry. This year, the honorary Oscars went to Winfrey, actor James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Simon at a black-tie affair that brought out stars such as John Travolta, Glenn Close and Alec Baldwin.

Talk show host and film actress Winfrey, who was nominated for a supporting-actress Academy Award in 1985's "The Color Purple," was given a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by a young woman who was sent through high school on a financial grant she earned from Winfrey's foundation.

Winfrey teared up when accepting her honorary Oscar and described the moment as "unimaginable" given her humble roots growing up in Mississippi.

"All of us can make a difference through the life we lead," Winfrey said. "We're all here to help each other."

She talked of her career as a TV chat show host and her movie work, and said it was "The Color Purple" that paved the way to stardom which, ultimately, led to philanthropy.

That movie "door opened to me through the magic and majesty of film," she said.

In unrelated O newz, she has placed an eight-room, 4,607-square-foot co-op unit in Streeterville up for rent for $15,000 a month.

Winfrey, who ended her long-running Chicago-based talk show earlier this year, spends much of her time in California and Hawaii. She paid $5.6 million for the three-bedroom co-op unit in 2006. But the talk-show queen never actually moved into the unit, choosing instead to remain in her massive duplex condominium spread in a different building a few blocks away.

Now, Winfrey has placed the co-op unit up for rent for the first time. The sixth-floor co-op is one of 13 apartments in a Beaux Arts-style building that was built in 1913 and designed by architect Benjamin Marshall. Features in the unit include three full baths, two half baths, 10-foot ceilings, two fireplaces, an inner foyer, a library, a solarium, a formal dining room, a butler's pantry, a wine room, a custom kitchen, a 1,241-square-foot master bedroom with his and her bathrooms and an en-suite guest bedroom.

Winfrey briefly listed the unit for sale for $6 million from June 2008 until January 2009.

Chicago native singer/actress Jennifer Hudson will join entertainers Justin Bieber, Cee Lo Green, Victoria Justice and The Band Perry will be playing on TNT’s annual “Christmas in Washington” show that will be taped on Dec. 11 and air Dec. 16 in the company of President Barack Obama and the First Lady, Michelle Obama . The concert will be hosted by Conan O’Brien, to be taped at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. The show benefits the Children’s National Medical Center

Chicago bred rap superstar Kanye West along with his protégé’s on his GOOD Music label Big Sean, Kid Cudi, and Pusha T will collaborate on one album . In October, West set things up when he tweeted, "GOODMUSIC.THE ALBUM.SPRING2012," and the date couldn't come soon enough. While label producer Hit-Boy couldn't confirm the sonic direction of the compilation, he assured MTV News that it'll be quality.

"It's going to be G.O.O.D. Music-esque, which is great music," the "N---as in Paris" producer said when he sat with MTV News last week.

It's a safe bet that 'Ye will remain chief producer, but that doesn't mean he won't enlist others as he did on his 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and his tag-team album with Jay-Z, Watch the Throne. "We actually already started a couple of ideas for that, just bouncing around stuff," Hit-Boy confirmed. "I just sent 'Ye like 12 beats the other day. He hit me like, 'I need joints.' So we're just going in."

St Louis raised comedic actress Niecy Nash has been cast to join Jefferson, Mo native/St Louis raised Cedric The Entertainer on his upcoming TV land sitcom in the 'Hot in Cleveland' spin-off pilot. From 'Hot in Cleveland' writer Suzanne Martin, the spin-off follows Cedric the Entertainer's character, Rev. Boyce, and his move to St. Louis. Nash will play Rev. Boyce's wife. Production on the new TV Land pilot is expected to begin this December.

In related Nash newz, she just landed her own reality series.

Since Niecy Nash Wedding Bash drew in 5 million viewers, TLC wants to experiment and shoot eight episodes of Niecy's blended family life. Niecy says her family life is a lot like the Brady Bunch:

“There’s a lot of love in our house, but also a lot of mayhem and foolishness – all the kids are acting crazy,: she says. “ I’m busier than ever, and Jay’s never raised girls before. We hope our fans welcome us into their homes… we need the room!

It is slated to air on TLC in January 2012

A woman is claiming that Chicago native NBA star Derrick Rose committed two crimes in one while hooking up with her close friend. According to MediaTakeout, she is the friend of an alleged Twitter prostitute and says Rose skipped the bill after receiving services from a lady of the night.“My friend charged Derrick Rose to [expletive],” A woman calling herself BEE tweeted. “When they were done, he looked at her, laughed and said… ‘Nah, I ain’t payin.’”

“I woulda robbed him and fled the scene,” BEE continued. “But I heard that [expletive] is abusive so she did the right thing by just leaving empty handed.”

Wow, if this is true, this could damage Rose’s squeaky clean image but then again, it was just a matter of time—can someone say Kobe Bryant?

Chicago formed veteran group Earth, Wind and Fire is in the ATL Thursday to receive its Lifetime achievement Award at The 2011 Soul Train Awards that is taped Thursday nite (and will air Nov 27 on BET and Centric TV). R&B legend Gladys Knight will also be honored. The night is all hosted by comedian Cedric “The Entertainer”

An interesting tidbit: When EW &F bassist Verdine White was on the Tom Joyner Morning Show this week he said that the band was the only group to not perform on the actual Soul Train show in its heyday to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.White said that iys head man, his blood brother, Maurice White, band head, felt fans would not take them seriously if they lip synched their hits with their being famous for its live shows.

Rock legend Axl Rose and his Guns 'N Roses performed at Allstate Arena in Chicago Tuesday and according to a Chicago Tribune review, “The start time at the Allstate Arena was 9 p.m., but the Guns didn’t fire until 11:10 p.m. By 2 a.m., the final confetti was just starting to fall.” They also performed many newer songs in their set.

Chicago native singer Lalah Hathaway launched a recent Facebook campaign to promote her sixth studio album, “Where It All Begins.” She’s offering fans to share an in-app request with four friends for a chance to win an autographed CD.

Her partners in the campaign, Fairwave Media, have helped the singer create a custom application and a mobile app that allows fans to listen to a featured track, comment about it, and share it with four of their friends.

Until November 27, more than 127,000 global Facebook fans will have an opportunity to dialog around each of Hathaway’s tracks and receive a signed CD almost every 72 hours. To learn more about the “Where It All Begins” Giveaway, go to or by visiting on your mobile device.

Chicago native interior designer Meg Caswell will be making over more spaces for HGTV. The network has ordered 13 additional episodes of her show “Meg’s Great Rooms” (formerly called “HGTV Great Rooms”) and will begin airing them in April. The first five episodes were filmed in Chicago and ran this fall after she won Season 6 of HGTV’s reality show “Design Star.”

The hoopla continues as St Louis radio personality J.C. Cochran made newz for blasting on his namesake radio show on KTRS Wednesday that he had sources that told told him that the Cardinals free agent slugger Albert Pujols will be re-signing with the Cards and a press conference would take place on Friday. Well, after his announcement, the social media erupted with postings of his comments even causing the national networks and Sports Illustrated to either denounce the rumors or post up what Cochran stated. It even caused the head guys at the Cards organization to deny the comments on their website. Cochran said that he was standing by his sources.

Cochran stated on his show Thursday that his Twitter account has had over 1,000 followers since the announcement and felt that because of his comments the Cards organization would forego the press conference-- until after Pujols returns from his vacation in Hawaii according to another source-- of Cochrans just to spite him.

The controversial personality also stated that he was the first to announce on air in October that former Cards manager Tony LaRussa was going to retire , a month prior to the organization going into the playoffs and the World Series—but it fell on deaf ears until it actually happened and everyone was shocked except his listeners of his radio show.

Well, we will see (we thought he was going to sign with the newly named Miami Marlins) but we do agree with Cochran that the Cards organization probably would move the press conference just to prove Cochran wrong because he is very hate din the STL community or his Howard Sternesque comments in the past that has gotten him either fired or suspended at various radio shows in the 20 plus year career.

And speaking of Pujols, he began a series of visits to potential bidders for his services last weekend when he met with officials from the newly christened Miami Marlins. Pujols reportedly traveled to Puerto Rico and his native Dominican Republic during the past week. His return to St. Louis will come via South Florida, where he will meet with a franchise that envisions the three-time NL Most Valuable Player as part of a makeover that includes the opening of a new stadium next April.

Pujols is expected to generate significant interest from as many as six teams and was greeted with inquiries from at least three clubs after the Cardinals’ lost exclusive negotiating rights with him before the beginning of the 2011 season.

The Cardinals have reportedly have not said they are prepared to dramatically improve last January’s bid of nine years for an average $22 million to $22.75 million.

The Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and perhaps the Los Angeles Angels are expected to engage Pujols’ agent, Dan Lozano.

Though New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said last week that his club did not intend to participate in bidding for Pujols, most expect Pujols to command more than $25 million per year, a threshold that so far has left the Cardinals squeamish.

As I stated, we will see.

The Cardinals organization had a press conference Monday at Busch Stadium to announce its new manager Mike Matheny who will replace Tony LaRussa who retired from baseball and after 16 yeards managing the Cards two days after the Cards won the World Series last month.

As far as his resume, Matheny has been a consultant for the ball club over the last few years, and does not have any MLB managing experience. He played for the Cardinals from 2000 to 2004, winning the Gold Glove award three times, one in 2000, and back to back in 2003 and 2004. Matheny added one more Gold Glove with the San Francisco Giants in 2005 before his playing career came to an end two years later due to post concussion symptoms.

Matheny was one of a handful of candidates to interview for the job last week. Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo, and former Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg were among the others interviewed.

Radio talkers are saying that the job should have went to Oquendo but feel he was overlooked due to his heavy Puerto Rican accent and “not looking the part “of a manager (read between the lines)…Matheny has been quoted as saying that he is ready for the challenge and that he is coming to an organization after the high of winning the World Series.

On the heels of Mike Matheny getting his new gig as manager of the Cards, The Chicago Cubs organization has hired Dale Sveum as their new manager, hoping the Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach can help turn around the long-suffering franchise. The Cubs said Sveum would be introduced at a news conference Friday at Wrigley Field.

According to reports, Mizzou football coach Gary Pinkel was arrested Wednesday night in Columbia, Mo., on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, authorities said. Missouri athletic director Mike Alden will address the situation Thursday, today, but a source with ties to the athletic department said that Pinkel would not coach Saturday's game with Texas Tech.
