DISH BITZ

Now that we are nominated for Most Valuable Blog n the Dining and Entertainment section, this is as fitting as always to add a dinner dish feature to our blog!

This week we feature the dish, Epanadas

An empanada is a stuffed bread or pastry baked or fried in many countries of Latin America and the south of Europe.. Empanada is made by folding a dough or bread patty around the stuffing. The stuffing can consist of a variety of meats, cheese, huitlacoche, vegetables or fruits among others.

Here’s how to cook a chicken version of the dish:

Ingredients

3 cups chopped, cooked chicken

1 (8-ounce) package shredded Colby and Monterey Jack cheese blend

4 ounces cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper

1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped

1 tablespoon ground cumin

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts

Water

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Lightly grease a baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine the chicken and next 7 ingredients. Unroll 1 piecrust onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 15-inch circle. Cut out rounds, using a 3-inch cookie cutter. Re-roll dough as needed. Repeat procedure with remaining piecrusts, making 12 to 15 circles total. Arrange 1 round on a clean, flat surface. Lightly brush the edges of crust with water. Place 1 heaping teaspoon of chicken mixture in the center of the round. Fold the dough over the filling, pressing the edges with a fork to seal. Repeat with the remaining rounds and chicken mixture. (Up to this point, the recipe can be made ahead and frozen for up to 1 month). Arrange empanadas on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes.

THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS

President Barack Obama has requested a joint session of Congress on Sept. 7 for an address in which he’ll unveil his proposals to promote job growth. The request would place Obama in a forum that presidents traditionally reserve for their annual state of the union addresses and momentous occasions such as national crises as he opens the fall political season with a new economic agenda. In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, Obama said he wants to announce his initiatives to create jobs and jump-start the economy in an address at 8 p.m. Washington time.

UPDATE: The address has been moved to next Thursday

In unrelated Obama newz, what was up with his uncle who was recently arrested for drunk driving and when asked by the police about his phone call that he was going to call the White House? Classic.

THREE DUOs MADE HEADLINES THIS WEEK

FIRST

Chicago reared rap superstar Kanye West won a Moonman with Katy Perry for Best Pop Collaboration in a Video for “ET” at Sunday;s MTV Music Awards. He and fellow throner Jay Z also performed the song OTIS on the show.

In unrelated Ye newz, he is confident he will be godfather to Beyonce Knowles' baby. The rapper-and-producer has told friends how excited he is about his close friend's pregnancy - her first child with her husband Jay-Z - because he thinks he will play a key role in its spiritual upbringing. A source told The Sun newspaper: "Kanye is as excited about the baby as Beyonce and Jay-Z.

In more Ye newz, he has four songs charting on this week;s Billboard R&B/Hip Hop charts with “Otis’ (with Jay Z) holding at No. 6, “Marvin and Chardinay: with Big Sean and Roscoe dash holgng at No. 9, his former No.2 smash solo single “All of the Lights: at No. 41 and “Niggas in Paris" (with Jay Z) moving up 11 spots to No,. 43. Meanwhile Ye and Jay Z's "Watch the Throne" CD has fallen to No,. 2 this week on the Billboard Album 200 being outtopped by The Game's "R.E,.D Album."

AND

Chicago reared Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, TV’s greatest hit-maker, is counting on Rosie O’Donnell to save her struggling cable network. OWN — which launched New Year’s Day to un-Oprah-like ratings — has already burned through more than $150 million in start-up money without producing a single hit show.

“There is pressure,” says Debra Birnbaum, editor-in-chief of TV Guide magazine, “because clearly this is what OWN is putting all of its emphasis on for the new season.

“They have to figure out a way to get eyeballs to that network.”

Can the stand-up comic — who will broadcast from Oprah’s old Chicago studio beginning in early October — do for OWN what, say, “South Park” did for Comedy Central or “Queer Eye”for Bravo? …

As a TV exec who used to work for her says, “Say whatever you want about her, Rosie makes money for people.”

From our understanding, weren’t Oprah and Rosie once rivals especially when Rosie came out wither own magazine like Oprah? Funny how business changes things. Wow if the O is depending on Rosie to turn her network around, it doesn’t seem likely that her network is going to survive too long.

MediaTakeOut.com received a SHOCKING piece of information this week. According to one of their EXTREMELY RELIABLE insiders, rapper Nelly reportedly owes his on-again-off-again girlfriend Ashanti more than $500,000.

The insider, who spoke on the condition of anonymity - but who IS CLOSE TO ASHANTI, told MediaTakeOut.com, "It's not fair. Nelly has [over the course of their relationship] borrowed more than $500K from Ashanti. It was not gifts either, he promised to pay it all back."

The tipster continued, "But Ashanti hasn't seen one penny. He bought her a couple of dresses, and took her on some trips, but what about a check . . . He really needs to give her back her money."

According to the insider, Ashanti would NEVER specifically ask Nelly for the money back - but she definitely wants it from him.

Ashanti, boo . . . you need to stop PLAYING with that man. If he owes you money make him pay . . . or take his AZZ to Judge Judy or SOMETHIN!!!

Wow, I this is story is true, then our golden boy’ has a serious gambling problem. There has been rumors circulating for years that Nelly had gambling debts that were astronomical but he has not confirmed those rumors. But iif this is the case, he definitely needs Gamblers Anonymous

ABC's Emmy-award winning show, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is planning a sizable construction project in Joplin in October.

The project will involved "multiple" homes that will be used to serve as a starting point for a new neighborhood and at least one building that could be used by more members of the community. Producers of the show did not say where the construction would start or what families would get new homes.

More than 7,000 Joplin homes were destroyed by an EF-5 tornado on May 22.

STL Beauty queen and talk show host Lesley Hunter(RIGHT) posted a note on her Facebook page in regards to the defaming comments that were responded by the group The Red Rockers(FAR RIGHT) after she gave tehm a shout out about their band. Well, come to find out Hunter may have promted the wrng Red Rockers—See for yourself.

Here is her note:

So, I was checking my facebook notifications and a post I had put a while back on a band's page, promoting the band, a good cause (breast care awareness), and the venue, i expected a positive response from the band when they commented. However, when i went on the page, they were slandering me, saying i 'must be terrible', that I 'dont have any fans (ha)', am a 'piece of work,' and accusing me of 'hijacking their page' when all i was doing was promoting them and a good cause! This was totally disgusting behavior to me. It's appauling and dissapointing (not to mention, stupid) that some people have so much hatred in their hearts to attack (and publicly!) someone whos generally regared as a nice person who's trying to help. Regardless of whatever level of talent this band possesses, their moral fibers and character are majorly in question in my opinion. Although I love good music, I'm not into supporting a musician or group (even if they are very talented) if they hold beliefs or a line of behavior I don't agree with and are just downright rude! It would be like supporting Wagner even though he was a huge anti-semite.So, it is up to you all but I would not encourage you to be so supportive of that group. And if anyone from that band is reading this (and i'm sure you dont care), but with dealing with rigorous academics, a friends death and an uncle with cancer, i really dont need the stress of some immature negative band member who is trying to put me down when im just trying to help!

For anyone who is curious, here is the link to their page where you can see the (horrible rude!) comment/response: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Rhythm-Rockers/350987994907 . Would love to hear you alls input.

OK Here is what she posted:

:Anyone who can listen to Lesley On The Town (guest Elizabeth Diebold) on IWatchRadio.com or come out to JackSons'Thurs. night for the Lesley on The Town & JackSons' BOOBIES ROCK Event for Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, please click the invite& select 'attending.' The Rhythm Rockers will be playing all night & good food, drinks & specials for supporters of the cause!:)

Here is what the Rhythm, Rockers response was to her comment:

The Rhythm Rockers What a piece of work trying to hijack another groups page. Sorry you can't find your own fans. You must be terrible !

Lesley Hunter ’s response:

What? I was promoting your band too. Did you bother to read past the first sentence? I said 'The Rhythm Rockers will be playing all night and good food, drinks and specials for the supporters of the cause' Or did you forget HOW TO READ after the first sentence? Usually small local bands would appreciate someone with a big following promoting their music.

And here is what a Lesley supporter wrote: Adam L. Williams

Lesley, there seems to be some mix up here. The link you listed for the Rhythm Rockers are not the same Rhythm Rockers from here in STL. They appear to be in NY state. That may be the cause for the comment they posted.

Woops. Wow. Talk about mistaken identity and what it could lead to. But all in all, the band shouldn’t have went n the rampage on Hunter regardless if it was a mistake or not.

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ?????????????????

Why did Katy Perry ask Kanye West if his win with her was his first? Why did Lady Gaga ask Britney Spears to kiss her during her male alter ego routine? And why did her male alter ego seem to fall flat? Why did Chris Brown just dance to Nirvana? Why did Tyler The Creator cuss throughout his whole speech? And why did his mother look like she was about to have church when he won? Why did Beyonce wait til the MTV Music Awards to announce her pregnancy? Why wasn’t there a host this year? And Why couldn’t Kevin Hart host the full show? Why did Cloris Leachman seemed a bit out of place presenting with the cast of Jersey Shore? Why did Gaga call Britney Spears a legend? And why is there still an MTV Music Awards when the channel doesn’t play videos anymore?
