OUT 1014--ILLI -MO arts and ent BITZ (JUNE 16-22)

HEY OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THAT TIME AGAIN!!

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

Before we get into the newz, St. Louis has lost one of its musical treasures.St Louis jazz sing singer Mae Wheeler aka Lady Jazz died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. A Memphis native, Wheeler had been a fixture in the St. Louis Jazz scene for over 50 years. She performed at any and every jazz venue in the St. Louis area as well as many across the Midwest and appeared with Pearl Bailey, Count Basie,Sonny Stitt, Mitch Miller and Arthur Prysock. She also had a philanthropic side establishing a scholarship to financially help 'C' average high school students

so they can further their creative education. She also established the Not-for-profit organization known as PAAR, Inc.(PROFESSIONAL & AMATEUR ARTISTS RECOGNIZED) booking and talent agency serving the under-represented talent in the St. Louis area.

Her last public performance was her production of Unforgettable Legends, that took place Oct. 31 at the Sheldon Concert Hall.

She was 79.

We forgot to add our BLIND PICZ in its regular spot this week so we posted it below:

Who was the bald sista spotted at Lola's last weekend?

On June 19th there will be two celebrations: They are the celebrations of the last generation of enslaved Africans in Texas discovering that slavery was abolished and were free via the Emancipation Proclamation signed into law in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln. Also, the celebration of fathers in this country.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As we continue our celebration of Black Music Month and artists on the STL scene, we spotlight singer Silky Sol.

Gaining national acclaim as the “God Mother of Soul, R&B and Blues,” Ms. Silky Sol aka The Red Afro Queen, is a current music fixture in St. Louis performing her wild child style on the local, national and international scene . Coming from gospel roots stemming from her parents the late great gospel artist Ruby Summerville Dickson and Deacon and Minister of Music Moses Summerville , she reached beyond her gospel roots after graduating high school and moved to California working with artists and producers. Including Grammy Award winning producer Narada Michael Michael who dubbed her Silky Sol.In 2009, she released her debut CD, “A GROWN A$$ WOMAN TALKIN” and in 2010, had the opportunity to perform at various festivals in the country including the New Orleans Jazz Festival and traveled overseas on a European tour.

THE BIG NEWZ STORY IN A&E NEWZ IS:

Emmy Award winning and Doloth, Ill native Jane Lynch was a guest on HBO's REAL TIME with BILL MAHER doing a verbatim dramatic reading of Congressman Anthony Weiner's unfortunate Facebook sextings with host Maher last week.

It is mos def hilarious and shicking even in this day and age. We wouldnt be surprised if Lynch gets some type of Emmy nod for her guest spot on this show ala Betty White on Saturday Night Live!

To check out the video go tohttp://open.salon.com/blog/jlroberson/2011/06/12/jane_lynch_will_make_your_head_explode_the_weinerlogues

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And speaking of Weiner, according to and sources, current Chitown native talk show queen and current TV network owner Oprah Winfrey may try and score an interview with the embattled politician and his wife for her OWN network. In related newz, Oprah has been accused of exploiting Sarah Ferguson to boost ratings of her fledgling network.Insiders believe Oprah has exploited the red-headed former British royal by making her do her own show, Finding Sarah.

“It is one thing for Oprah to offer up Dr. Phil and Suzie Orman to help the Duchess, it’s another to convince her to document the entire journey on camera,” a source told PopEater.

“You have to wonder who is helping who in this situation. Is Oprah trying to help her network get viewers by exploiting Sarah or is she genuinely trying to get the Duchess help?

Well we think its a little bit of both. Don't think Oprah isnt a shrewd business person and she's all about making sure she is a success and she isnt exempt from it.

The deliberations in the Blago Trial continues this week with no verdict as jurors sort through the evidence for the retrial of ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Jurors reportedly sent their first note to the judge on Tuesday. It offered no clear indication about whether they're close to a decision. The note said jurors had different numbers of pages in one transcript of an FBI wiretap recording. The judge ordered an official to collect the extra pages.

Blagojevich faces 20 counts, including allegations that he tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat. He testified for seven days and denied all the charges.

His first trial last year ended with a jury deadlocked on all but one count.

Also, his older brother Robert Blagojevich is hoping for the best for his kid brother.

For days, the businessman has been regularly checking the Internet for word that jurors deliberating at the corruption retrial of impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich have reached a verdict.

"It's a very anxious time," he told The Associated Press on Tuesday from Nashville, Tenn. "Despite whatever little problems he and I may have personally, he's my brother. I don't want him to go to prison."

At the first trial last year, Robert, 55, sat just behind his year-younger sibling in court as a co-defendant accused of helping his brother try to sell or trade President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat. He was heard on several FBI wiretap recordings speaking about fundraising with his brother.

But after that trial ended with a hung jury, prosecutors dismissed all charges against Robert, in part to make the case less complex. Some jurors also said that Robert, a retired Army officer, cut a sympathetic figure and threw the focus off the impeached governor.

Robert Blagojevich reportedly said he had wanted to travel to Chicago to attend his brother's retrial — or even, possibly, to testify. His lawyers advised against it, though, saying prosecutors could theoretically attempt to recharge him.

Not going to Chicago, he said, upset him.

"I wanted to help my brother," he said. "There was just not more I could do. That's hard."

Robert Blagojevich took the stand in his own defense at the first trial, while his brother had vowed to testify — and then didn't.

We are just waiting on the movie rights and you know Hollywood is waiting for the verdict (which we think will be on half of the counts and not all 20) to begin the first draft of the script.

Grammy Award nominated Chicagoan rapper Lupe Fiasco made news recently on his controversial comments involving President Barack Obama saying he was a 'terrorist' during a recent interview.

In an interview with CBS News, Fiasco criticized US president
Barack Obama and America's view on world politics.

"In my fight against terrorism, to me, the biggest terrorist is Obama, and the United States of America. I'm trying to fight the terrorism that's actually causing the other forms of terrorism.'' He also said that he would not vote for Obama in the 2012 Presidential race.
The rapper says he stands by the statement he made: ''I've got nothing to clarify. It's Obama and the U.S. government," Lupe said, echoing his comments to CBS. "[It's] every president that came before him and every president that comes after him,'' Lupe told
Billboard.

Whoa! Lupe is going hard in the paint on this one! We don't think his fellow citizen Kanye would had said these words. Although we understand what he means in regards to Obama and his decision to have Osama bin Laden killed and what effect it would have on terrorism, but we think Lupe has caused some controversy that may effect his rising supertstar possibilities.

MEANWHILE, Lupe continued to make newz with his comments as conservative political commentator Bill O'Reilly chimed in on the rapper's comments on a recent show

The Fox News personality invited Fiasco to appear on his show, 'The O'Reilly Factor' but when he allegedly declined, O'Reilly verbalized his disdain for the Chicago MC. "Mr. Fiasco has been invited on 'The Factor' but has declined, possibly because he could not possibly defend that remark, which makes him a pinhead," he said. "Now the reason I say I wish I was named Lupe Fiasco, wouldn't it be great, 'The Fiasco Factor?' I mean, it would be tremendous."

As it turns out, Fiasco did not turn down an opportunity to appear on the show, and took to his Twitter page to clear things up. "Whoa! I got invited to the O'reilly factor and turned it down??? Thats news to me...would NEVER turn down the opp to push billys buttons!" he wrote
.O'Reilly has been known for his right-wing political views, and strong opposition to hip-hop artists, such as Fiasco's friend and fellow windy city native Kanye West, whom he crowned the "ultimate pinhead" on his 'Patriots & Pinheads' show segment.

Fiasco has come under fire for his explosive comments on President Obama, revealing in an interview that he not only doesn't vote but thinks that the commander-in-chief is a "terrorist."

Despite his controversial statements, the 29-year-old rhymer is sticking by his comments, receiving support from Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy
who openly agreed with his statements.

No word yet on when Fiasco will appear on 'The O'Reilly Factor.'

Sounds like Lupe is he is gettin' caught up in the hype.

The First Lady Michelle Obama has gone from the White House to Nickelodeon. The First Lady will appear as very special guest star on the hit Nick show, 'iCarly.'

According to
E! Online
, Obama dropped by the set Monday to film her guest spot, which she hopes will shed light on Joining Forces, a program dedicated to helping and honoring U.S. military families.

The episode revolves around Carly (played by Miranda Cosgrove) who breaks some rules in an attempt to set up a video chat with her dad, who is serving overseas. The First Lady, playing herself, hears about Carly's attempts and drops by to talk about how important it is for families and soldiers overseas to connect.

The episode airs in January.

The Tony Awards were given out Sunday in NYC and aired on CBS and one STL native was one of the big winners, Norbert Leo Butz, who won his second Tony Award career for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical in Catch Me If You Can.

While it's still early on in the week, it's looking like super hip-hop duo Bad Meets Evil (St. .Joseph, Mo native Eminem and Royce da 5'9") is heading for No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart with "Hell: the Sequel.” that was released this Tuesday. Industry sources suggest the set could sell around 150,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, June 19.

In unrelated newz, Eminem got rave reviews at Bonnanoo's Music and Arts Festival 2011.Rapper Eminem stole the show at the 10th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, which – despite its Australian-sounding name – took place this weekend at a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. The four-day festival traditionally features a wide array of music styles, and this year was no different with acts like Arcade Fire, Buffalo Springfield, Widespread Panic, the Black Keys, and Mumford & Sons. But in addition to Eminem, a number of other rap and hip hop acts dominated the stage this weekend, including Lil Wayne, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa.

Eminem, dressed in long camouflage shorts and a black “Bad Meets Evil” t-shirt, paced back and forth across the stage on Saturday night, performing an hour-and-a-half set of his latest songs and greatest hits, including “Stan” and “The Real Slim Shady.” He then returned to the stage amid raucous applause for an encore performance of his megahit “Lose Yourself.” Rolling Stone pronounced his performance “a triumph,” and said he had “the energy of a prizefighter.” MTV News agreed. “This wasn’t so much a performance as it was an exercise in determination,” wrote reviewer James Montgomery, “a focused, fierce, 90-odd minutes of grit and guile.” At the end, Eminem thanked the crowd for their support. “Everybody here tonight,” he said, “I just wanna say thank you for sticking by me and not giving up on me.”

It was Eminem’s first performance of the year in support of his Grammy-winning comeback album, Recovery, released last June.

As Chicagoan rapper Kanye West celebrated his 34th bday last week and remaining high on the charts with both “E.T” and “All of the Lights:, he continues to make newz with his philanderings with various women. He has been linked to Victoria's Secret model, Kate Upton, Miss Universe Albania 2010 Angela Martini, and a mystery blonde who sent him nude pics recently and the one he was spotted with at the Cannes Film Festival. Now he has been reportedly been spotted hooking up with Mary-Kate Olsen.

The unlikely pair were spotted kissing and canoodling at West's 34th birthday at SubMercer on Wednesday, according to the New York Post’s Page Six.

Sources told the gossip colum that West invited the famous twin when he bumped into her at the Council of Fashion Designders of America awards dinner earlier that week – although he was apparently seen with leggy Victoria's Secret model Chanel Iman later that night.

His reps did not provide the newspaper with a comment.

Hmm, is it us or is Kanye's going through all these women to escape into his twisted dark fantasy.

Oak Park, Ill native and multi Emmy Award winning actress Betty White, has been doing a lot he promotion these days for the second season of her sitcom "Hot in Cleveland" that returned to TV Land Wednesday. First tour is making tincreasingly the favorite TV personality of ironic hipsters the world over, sat in for Kelly Ripa on Regis and Kelly. Then, she appeared on David Letterman's “Late Show” to deliver the Top10 list, "Betty White's Tips for Living a Long and Happy Life." That included a dig at LeBron J: "Never dwell on past mistakes." Away from the TV world, she dropped by the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Wednesday before attending a premiere event at the Rock Hall. TV Land posted a photo on its Twitter feed of White feeding a giraffe. The zoo said White had a private tour of the zoo and only stayed a short time. Still, people in Cleveland were excited about her visit.

Chicago native and award winning singer/actress Jennifer Hudson felt severe pains after performing on "Good Morning America," last week a spokesperson told RadarOnline.com. Hudson was treated at the hospital for food poisoning and then released, according to Radar. She missed an appearance on the CBS Early Show because of the incident. Meanwhile, her upcoming biopic “Winnie” a love story about South African activist Nelson Mandela, played by fellow Chicagoan actor and Oscar nominee Terrence Howard, and wife Winnie is getting negative press from Winnie herself saying it was an insult that the film was made without consulting her.

She said, I have absolutely nothing against Jennifer, but I have everything against the movie itself. I was not consulted. I am still alive. I think that it is total disrespect to come to South Africa, make a movie about my struggle and call that movie some translation of a romantic life of Winnie Mandela. I think it is an insult. I don’t know what would be romantic in our struggle.”

Well as they controversy breeds success. We will see if the publicity will work for or against the film. No word on when the film will be released but we gather it will be in theaters in time for Oscar consideration.

Emmy Award nominated and Chicago native actress Marla Gibbs celebrated her 80th bday this week!

Rapper Nelly will appear in the Summer Concert Series at Universal Studios in Hollywood on Saturday.

Two of the biggest stars in the Blues received big honors at this past weekend’s Chicago Blues Festival.

Lonnie Brooks, who has made Chicago his home for a half-century, headlined the final night of the 27-year-old festival Sunday. In his honor, June 12 was proclaimed “Lonnie Brooks Day’’ in a letter from Mayor Rahm Emanuel read on stage at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park.

Earlier, as Shemekia Copeland was finishing her set, she was crowned “Queen of the Blues’’ by Cookie Taylor, the daughter of Koko Taylor, who previously owned the title. Taylor died in 2009, and on Sunday night, Cookie Taylor presented Copeland with a tiara her mother once wore.

Later, Copeland, Brooks, son Wayne Baker Brooks and a host of other Blues greats took the stage for a rousing rendition of “Sweet Home Chicago’’ performed in honor of Chicago-based Alligator Records’ 40th anniversary.

ILLI MO CHART BITZ

THE BIG STL NEWZ STORY THIS WEEK IS:

.St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony Larussa celebrated his 5,000th game as a manager in baseball during the 8-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers lastFriday.

The 66-year-old reportedly has won 2,676 games with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland A's and the Cardinals over a 33-year career but was unable to add to that tally as his team were soundly beaten in Milwaukee.

La Russa is reportedly the second manager to reach the 5,000-game milestone but remains a long way behind Connie Mack's phenomenal 7,755 contests in charge of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Athletics.

"The old coaching adage is probably the best one of all. You never enjoy the wins like you suffer the losses," LaRussa told reporters. "So 2,000 (2,320) losses is much worse than whatever the wins are. That's just the nature of coaching."

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ????????????????????????????????????????

Why is Anthony Weiner receiving Twitter counseling? Why did Howard Stern hire his comic foils to heckle during Anthony Weiner's press conference? Why does the Tracy Morgan apology seemed more a PR move than sincerity? Why is the Imperial Palace still open after a recent shooting and killing of someone outside the club recently? Why is People Magazine paying Kim Kardashian $1 million for her wedding pics? Why did Hugh Hefner's fiancee ditch the Playboy tycoon? Why was Sylvester Stallone inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame? Why hasnt there been a breakout rap star to come out St Louis since Nelly and Chingy? Why is LisaRaye doing mostly all of the press for the show "Single Ladies" and not Queen Latifah? Why was Beyonce's latest CD, "4" leaked two weeks before it was to be released ? And why would Lupe Fiasco call Obama a terrorist and is now shocked his comments made headlines?

BLACK REP BITZ

he Montford Pointe Marine
THRU - June 26, 2011

by Samm-Art Williams/ Directed by Ron Himes
The day of July 10th, 1993 marks a special moment for Robert Charles Wilson. 50 years ago he enlisted to become a Marine at Montford Point. He proudly served his country in WWII at Iwo Jima and after exiting the service trained as a classical opera singer. But his only shortcoming in life was separating from his wife, Gwen, when she refused to chase his dream of becoming a famous singer. With their only son R.C. in town to celebrate the anniversary of his father’s enlistment, this day brings a wave of memories back to Robert, along with a few unexpected turns in this World Premiere theatre event. For tickets go to http://www.theblackrep.org/
