OUT 850--ILLI MO (A&E) BITZ

HAPPY B-DAY OUTTOWN! TIME TO GET TOWNED!

THIS
JUST ANNOUNCED:

The Prime Time Emmy Award nominations were just announced Thursday and STL native Jon Hamm was again nominated as lead actor in a drama for "Mad Men." He'll compete with Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"); Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"); Hugh Laurie ("House"); Matthew Fox ("Lost"); and Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"). Hamm was also nominated as guest actor in a comedy for "30 Rock."
"Mad Men" was also nominated as outstanding drama series.

THE BIG STORY in THE ILLMO A&E BITZ this week is:

President Barack Obama will tour the Smith Electric Vehicle plant in Kansas City on Thursday before attending fundraisers later in the day for Robin Carnahan, a Democratic Senate hopeful. Obama will give a speech about the economy after his tour, according to the White House. He’ll then attend fundraising events for Carnahan, the Missouri secretary of state. She is likely to face U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt, a Republican, this fall in the race to fill the seat of retiring U.S. Sen. Kit Bond, also a Republican.

Last week, Chitiown native R&B star R. Kelly was slapped with a lawsuit from a former employee over allegations of unpaid wages. The singer reportedly was accused of failing to compensate Anthony Navarro for overtime hours he racked up in 2007, while Kelly was on tour.
In his legal papers, filed in an Illinois court, Navarro claims he and his fellow workers reportedly were sometimes forced to work more than 80 hours a week to help with studio and tour preparations. They were reportedly contracted to be paid time-and-a-half for the additional hours but Navarro alleges he was only paid at the normal rate.
He has also named Kelly's production company, Bass Productions Ltd., in the lawsuit and has cited the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act and the Illinois Minimum Wage Law in his court filing.

Speaking of lawsuits involving a Chitown based artist, rapper Kanye was sued over song infringement. Vincent Peters, a rap artist who goes by the stage name Vince P., is suing the hip hop superstar for stealing his work.
According to court documents filed on June 25 with the U.S. District Court in northern Illinois, Peters claims he wrote and recorded a song in 2006 called “Stronger” that ended up in the hands of long-time West business manager John Monopoly. Seven months later, West released his own song called “Stronger” that the suit says “copies significant and important” portions of Peters’ song.
In Peters’ complaint, he argues that the refrain, or “hook,” of West’s “Stronger” is similar to what Peters wrote. “The hook portions of both songs constitute the most memorable portion of the song and make the songs appealing to the ear of the listener,” the suit stated.
Some of the lyrics in question are:

Peters’ “Stronger”

What don’t kill me make me stronger

The more I blow up the more you wronger

You coped my CD you can feel my hunger

The wait is over couldn’t wait no longer

AND

West’s “Stronger”

N- n- now th- that don’t kill me can only make me stronger

I need you to hurry up now cause I can’t wait much longer

I know I got to be right now cause I can’t get much wronger

Man I’ve been waitin’ all night now that’s how long I’ve been on you

Both songs also mention fashion model Kate Moss, “a highly unusual and incongruous reference in a hip-hop song,” according to the complaint. (HMMM GIVEWAY RIGHT HERE!)

On his Myspace page, he said URB Magazine named him a “next 100 Artist of 2008.” He has a recent Billboard hit called “Girls in the Club.” Earlier this year, he registered “Stronger” with the U.S. Copyright office, allowing him to sue West for copyright infringement.

However, it’s unclear why he waited three years to copyright "Stronger" then sue West. He did not immediately respond to an interview request sent to an e-mail address mentioned in the court documents.

On Twitter, where Peters lists his locations as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C., he acknowledged his beef with West. “Too bad Kanye's Team is like the British and Team Vince P is the American Revolution,” he wrote. “Last week was just the TEA PARTY....”
Documents explain that in 2006, Peters approached Monopoly, who was the co-founder of Chicago-based Hustle Period Entertainment, about him becoming Peters’ executive producer. As part of the process, Peters sent Monopoly several of his songs, including “Stronger.”

In his lawsuit, Peters is demanding that West, as well as the recording companies of Roc-a-Fella Records LLC and UMG Recordings Inc., stop performing, reproducing and selling West’s “Stronger.” Peters is also asking for an unspecified amount of money.

He is requesting that a jury rule on his suit.

Hmmm, on both R Kelly and Ye suits, we think that both will probably settle out of court. As far as Peters waiting three years after writing, “Stronger” to copyright it. Well, that can be a lil fuzzy. It could have been that Peters probably “registered" the song to the US Copyright office which is different than an actual copyright. If a work isnt published, or produced for commercial release to the public, then it has to be registered by the author. If it is set for publishing, then a work is “re-registered” as a copyrighted work. And that was probably the case with Peters when he worked with Monopoly—registered the song. afterthat, who knows what happened. It could have been the scenario that Monoploy got the song from P, gave it to Ye, he changed it up and recorded it and published it with a different registering as an actual copyright. A familiar game in the biz.

In unrelated Ye newz, it was reported that his fifth album, still tentatively titled "Good Ass Job." would be released Sept. 14 as tweeted by the rapper last week on the same day as his and his protege
Kid Cudi's album.

This is what he tweeted on Twitter: "September 14, 2010 My album Finally Famous x Kanye West album Good A** Job x Kid Cudi album Man on the Moon pt 2 RT #GOODMUSIC.”

The first single from the album, "Power," featuring
Dwele, which samples rockers King Crimson, has already reached No. 45 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, was performed by the rapper recently when he opened this year’s BET Awards, backed by a fake volcano and a video display behind him.

UPDATE: "Power" debuts on this week's Billboard Hot 100 at #22.

ILLIMO native comedians made waves on the semifinals round on Last Comic Standing last Monday. Of the three comedians reppin the area, Benton, Illinois native Tommy Johnagin (near Carbondale, Ill PIC ABOVE) advanced to the Top 10 finalists. But the bruhaha occurred when St. Louis native comic-actor Guy Torry had an awkward moment with the judges after his race-based set involving the KKK and Barack Obama. He didn't take kindly to the judges' critique of his stand-up on 'Last Comic Standing' (Mon., 9PM ET on NBC). "The KKK voted for Barack, did you know that? Google it, Google it!" said Torry during his routine."Not all the material was my style," said judge Andy Kindler."That's because you didn't vote for Barack," responded Torry. "Do I look like a Republican?" asked a confused Kindler. The second critique, from Natasha Leggero, concerned "the punch lines ... You say everything like three times." Torry told her he didn't and got a bit more confrontational, saying, "You never buy a ticket to one of my shows, so I'm not really worried about you." Then he was a little hostile toward judge Greg Giraldo, too.

So, you know what that meant---ELIMINATION

But our thing is, why did he even go on? He doesn’t need the show! He's already established (even judge Giraldo sauid that he's seen him perform before and knows that he could do a better set that he brought on). Then, to not get chosen in the Top 10, is quite an ego deflater. Or maybe Torry did it to boost his standup anonymity with the mainstream. Who knows, but we think it backfired.

Oh ,and the other St. Louis native comedian Nicki Glaser also did not advance to the Top 10.

The big STL-OCAL STORY is:

The end of 60 plus year old classical station KFUO (99.1 FM) Tuesday with the playing of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, "Choral" as several hundred people came attended to witness the end.
At 8:30 Tuesday night, a surprisingly young crowd gathered in the parking lot in front of the station on the Concordia Seminary campus for a candlelight vigil promoted on Facebook. It was organized by Alex Blank, 18, a bassoon and composition student at Indiana University and alumnus of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Its owner, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, has sold the signal of St. Louis’ classical music station to Gateway Creative Broadcasting’s JOY-FM, which was approved by FCC in May, which will use the signal for Christian contemporary pop music, which began Wednesday.

On a Facebook page called "Stop the Sale of KFUO Classic 99 in St. Louis!," WLarry wrote, "as a Christian, I am sickened by this sale. I feel like I'm experiencing the death of a close friend."

From what we hear, it is more people approving of the change than those who wanted the station to remain classical. If folk wanted it to stay, where was thr protest in May? Hello?
