ITS WEDNESDAY—TIME TO GET TOWNED!
Before we get into the A&E in the ILLI and MO:
The RFT Edition of the Best of 2009 came out last Wednesday. Well, OUTTOWN did not win for Best Blog, but thanks to those who did vote for our blog. The winner was Urban Review STL, a blog catering to the urban planning and politics in the city (Exciting right? LOL). Oddly enough, the reader’s choice was a blog called Super Happy Funtime Blog. It’s a daily entertainment blog written by a local freelance/arts designer named Jeff Rifkin who comments about entertainment newz. Uh, aint that what we do? LOL.
Cape Girardeau. Mo native and controversial conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh announced this week that he is part of a group bidding for ownership of the St. Louis Rams football team. Limbaugh — a native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and who was seen at a recent Rams game on Sept 20 — first mentioned his interest in owning the NFL team this spring, and has now teamed with St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts to submit a bid.
Checketts, the founder and chief executive officer of SCP Worldwide, a New York-based firm that owns and operates the Blues, reportedly will oversee the group that would purchase at minimum the 60 percent share of the Rams owned by Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez, the children to Rams' late owner, Georgia Frontiere.
The Rams owners have to approve and vote the bid before the bid could take place and there is no timetable on when that bid will take place. It is known that if the Rams are sold to the group, the team must stay in St. Louis in that Checkett’s is owner of the St. Louis Blues.
Forbes Magazine reported that the Rams franchise was valued at more than $900 million, but it's believed the Rams' sale might fetch $800 million or less given the state of the economy and the state of the team, being currently 0-4 in this season and losing 14 straight consecutive games overall.
So, if Rush owns the Rams, will they be renamed the St. Louis Rambraughs? LOL
In other Rams newz, the team’s next home opener will be this Sunday as they play the Minnesota Vikings in their Pro-Back uniforms. Rams are coming off another loss in San Francisco when they played the 49ners last Sunday giving them a 0-4 record so far in the NFL season.
In other Rams newz, former Rams defensive tackle Hollis Thomas was signed to the Carolina Panthers. Last week, the St. Louis native, Sumner grad, had his contract terminated by the club.

East Boogie booze will be banned after 1 a.m. Last weekend, East St. Louis mayor Alvin Parks ordered all clubs and liquor stores to stop selling alcohol after 1:00am after Two people were killed at two East St. Louis night clubs—Club 2151, Etta’s Bar and Grill and City Nights. As a result, Parks, who has been considering banning the time of liquor being sold soon after being elected in 2007, suspended the liquor licenses of all three clubs and halted liquor sales city-wide after 1:00am. The Casino Queen is exempt.
OK, here’s the thing. We applaud the mayor for what he’s doing to try and curb the violence in the city, but as creative as folk are, don’t you think that people who go to the clubs and liquor stores on the East Side will just consume or purchase more alcohol before 12:59 a.m.? And, still commit crimes after 1 a.m? And, isn’t it interesting that the Casino Queen is exempt. Hmm, wonder why? Maybe it’s because it’s not considered a threat (a.k.a “black”) venue perhaps? Or maybe cuz more non-black people patronize it (whereas most blacks attend the clubs)? Or that the city gets most of its revenue from the Queen albeit liquor sales and don’t wanna affect the political ties with the owners (as well as affecting the $700 million tax dollars)?
We are just saying.
Last Saturday, there was a fallacious rumor that St. Louis native , renowned poet /educator/activist Dr. Maya Angelou was rushed to an L.A. hospital last Saturday then died. Gossip blog site TMZ reported and Twitter posted the false report. According to a report that same day on CNN reported that Angelou was fine, at home, and wasn’t even in L.A. Saturday. The 81 year old Angelou was in fact traveling to the St. Louis area for a speech engagement at Southern Illinois University that Saturday evening for the school's 25th season of its Arts & Issues series. She reportedly started receiving calls about the report while on her tour bus en route to the event.
TMZ retracted the false report and blamed a photographer who was at the Brave Heart Awards in L.A. where Angelou was supposed to be honored but had been hospitalized prior to arrival. The photographer spreaded the rumor that she didn’t arrive cuz she was hospitalized. According to Maya, she was never supposed to have attended the award function, so she had instead sent a taped speech on her behalf. This may have been the root cause of all the confusion.
At the SIUE event, before her presentation, she commented about the rumor and asked the crowd, “Look at me. Do I look sick?”
CLASSIC. If anything, the rumor drew in hundreds and hundreds who attended the event we hear.

More than 21,000 country fans attended the Farm Aid benefit concert for homegrown farmers last Sunday held at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Earth City. The sold out , 10 hour concert, concert, which was broadcast live on Direct TV Channel 10, began at noon. The scheduled acts in order included openers St. Louis based guitarist Ernie Isley and the jam band and Granite City Ill. based country artist Gretchen Wilson. Next up was pop newbie Jason Mraz, then Dave Matthews without his band and teaming up with acoustic artist Tim Reynolds.
Then the Farm Aid artist took the stage. They included rocker, Farm Aid co-creator John Mellencamp (who invited his 14-year-old guitarist son to perform with him), then Fram Aid co-creator folk artist Neil Young—who brought out the last act, country veteran superstar and Farm Aid board member Willie Nelson.
We hear the crowd started to thin out when Nelson got on stage. At that time it was close to 9ish in the evening and we assume folk was tryin not to get into the hella traffic after the concert.

Hmm, wonder if she is coming to the Lou still on Dec. 4 at Scott Trade Center that was once the bill for both her and Ye? The Fame Kills tour had been problematic from the start, especially after West's appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 13, where he took the microphone from teenage singer Taylor Swift as she was about to begin an acceptance speech. He subsequently apologized and told Jay Leno the next day he planned to take some time off.

Those who are CSI Miami fans in the St. Louis area had a chance to catch the last eight minutes of the show late late Tuesday/early Wednesday on KMOV-TV that was interrupted when the show first aired Monday in its 9 p.m. timeslot. KMOV, the station carrying the show, had some tech problems and cut off the last minutes of the show and led straight to the 10 o’clock news (TALK ABOUT a HEIDI moment. LOL) . KMOV worked with CBS to find a time to air the missing portion LATE Tuesday/early Wednesday from 1:07 am -1:15 am. So if yawl got TIVO it may be best to probably tape it and watch it at a reasonable hour for those who feel sleep is more important. LOL

OUTTOWN EXCLUSIVE
Well, it’s official. Evening Whirl’s Sister Cyn is back at Evening Whirl doing her share of jobs at the weekly newspaper. Last week we reported that we spotted Sister Cyn with her former interim boss Entertainment Editor Jay Bailey at Karma’s Grand Opening Weekend after quitting the paper a couple of months ago. Well, we got the dish straight from her when we sighted her at Taste of St. Louis doing what she does best—taking pic sand promotin. She said after some renegotiations (as in cha-ching), everything is back on with her at the newspaper. I am proud of that cuz with YOUSR TRULY being a contributor to the Lifestyle and Entertainment Section of the paper, we as journalist from the out the box, guerilla P.O.V. we gotta stick together.
Marty K Casety’s camp emailed us and confirmed that the play A HOUSE DIVIDED will be restaged next month. The email we got from its assistant Gwendolyn Jackson are as follows:
“Looks like we have a date and place locked down for "A House Divided" Back By Popular Demand. The show(s) will be on Saturday, November 7th at 3pm and 7pm at McCluer-Berkeley South High School located on S. Florissant Road in Cool Valley, right off 70 and Florissant Road. We will have control over our own concessions and they have ample parking and dressing rooms. We have confirmation within the next 24 hours so stand by, we are going to hit the ground running.”
Congrats to them indeed.

St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society – a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, recognize, and promote the R&B heritage of the St. Louis region. Founded by local businessman, entrepreneur, and longtime civic leader Reginald D. Dickson(and the owner of the favorite pre-theater dining restaurant, Reggie’s Backstage, located directly across the street from the Fox Theatre in Grand Center.), the Society’s vision is to be St. Louis’ preeminent organization for R&B performances, education, and preservation activities. It also aims to increase the community’s knowledge and appreciation of the major role played by St. Louis in the advancement of R&B music.
To fulfill its vision, the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society will establish a performance venue for local and nationally-recognized R&B artists. It will also develop programs to educate individuals – young and old – about R&B. The Society also has future plans to develop a museum to archive and document the history of R&B and its existence in St. Louis, which was a locus for the musical form throughout the mid 1900s. At the helm of the Society is executive director Cornelius Washington, who holds 20 years experience working with non-profit organizations in the Midwest in program management and fund raising.
The finished product will be a space that operates both as a performance venue for the St. Louis Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society as well as a fully functional restaurant. The Society, as a non-profit organization with its own board of directors, will operate independent of Reggie’s Backstage. I was sitting at home one evening and was thinking,” what can I do to make a difference.” As I was going through my closet, I came across some formal dresses that I had from either weddings or formal events, it struck me. “I can start a collection and give back to the community.” So I called a girlfriend of mine and she thought that this was a wonderful idea.
