HEY OUTTOWNERS!

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH BITZ

This week we spotlight Carl Sandburg.

Carl Sandburg (January 6, 1878 – July 22, 1967) was an American writer and editor, best known for his poetry. He was the recipient of three Pulitzer Prizes: two for his poetry and another for his biography of Abraham Lincoln. H. L. Mencken called Carl Sandburg "indubitably an American in every pulse-beat."

Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois. He began his writing career as a journalist for the Chicago Daily News. Later he wrote poetry, history, biographies, novels, children's literature, and film reviews. Sandburg also collected and edited books of ballads and folklore. He spent most of his life in the Midwest before moving to North Carolina.
He moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and joined the Social Democratic Party, the name by which the Socialist Party of America was known in the state. Sandburg met Lilian Steichen at the Social Democratic Party office in 1907, and they married the next year. Lilian's brother was the photographer Edward Steichen. Sandburg with his wife, whom he called Paula, raised three daughters.
The Sandburgs moved to Harbert, Michigan, and then to suburban Chicago, Illinois. They lived in Evanston, Illinois, before settling inElmhurst, Illinois, from 1919 to 1930. Sandburg wrote three children's books in Elmhurst, Rootabaga Stories, in 1922, followed by Rootabaga Pigeons(1923), and Potato Face (1930). Sandburg also wrote Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years, a two volume biography in 1926, The American Songbag (1927), and a book of poems Good Morning, America (1928) in Elmhurst. The family moved to Michigan in 1930. '
Sandburg's collection, The War Years was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. His Complete Poems won him a second Pulitzer Prize in 1951.[4]
Sandburg also earned Pulitzer Prizes for his collection The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg, Corn Huskers, and for his biography of Abraham Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln: The War Years).[4] He recorded excerpts from the biography and some of Lincoln's speeches for Caedmon Records in New York City in May 1957. He was awarded a Grammy Award in 1959 for Best Performance – Documentary Or Spoken Word (Other Than Comedy) for his recording of Aaron Copland'sLincoln Portrait with the New York Philharmonic.

He moved to a Flat Rock, North Carolina estate, Connemara, in 1945 and lived there until his death in 1967.
Sandburg supported the civil rights movement, and contributed to the NAACP.

Carl Sandburg's boyhood home in Galesburg is now operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site. The site contains the cottage Sandburg was born in, a modern visitor's center, and small garden with a large stone called Remembrance Rock, under which he and his wife Lilian's ashes are buried.[8] Sandburg's home of 22 years

THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:
On Monday, , the First Family hosted the 134th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year's theme was “Let's Go, Let's Play, Let's Move” and more than 35,000 people joined them on the South Lawn for games, stories, and the traditional egg roll on the Lawn.

"We are so thrilled all of you could join us," Obama said from the South Portico, flanked by the first lady, their daughters, Malia and Sasha, and the Easter Bunny.
"There's something for everyone. ... I hope you put on your comfortable shoes," the first lady said.
The annual event featured traditional egg-rolling races — as well as obstacle courses, book-readings, musical performances, cooking with celebrity chefs and clowns galore. There was even a yoga garden.
After welcoming the throng, the president and his family — including first grandmother Marian Robinson — set off to mix and mingle as the president's own Marine Band played Irving Berlin's "Easter Parade."
His first stop was the day's centerpiece event, the egg-rolling race. Obama blew the whistle and joined in the cheers of parents as youngsters scampered across the grass toward a finish line a short distance away.

He then joined the rest of his family on the book-reading stage. Malia and Sasha took turns reading from "A Sick Day for Amos McGee" by Philip C. Stead. He followed with Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," which he called an "all-time classic," and encouraged his audience to join in the growling, roaring and teeth-gnashing of the characters. "You guys were excellent wild things," he said, before excusing himself. "I've got to go to work. I'm gnashing my teeth."
Michelle Obama kept to the animal theme by reading "The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear" by Don and Audrey Wood.
Elsewhere, children could take part in sports with the likes of tennis star Michael Chang, NBA standouts Mitch Richmond and Daryll Dawkins, and Olympians Michelle Kwan and Dominique Dawes.

On the basketball court, Obama played the game "Shoot for Strength" with a group of kids and the Harlem Globetrotters. The contest involves sinking shots — and doing pushups. It took Obama eight tries to sink a basket. He then joined in the pushups that are the game's "reward." "I'm all pushed-up-out!" he said.
Obama also managed to fit in a few minutes of tennis with one of the sport's legends, Chris Evert.

The only thing was missing was Obama singing, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail.” LOL

In unrelated Obama newz, First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on Wednesday's edition of "The Colbert Report" to discuss her new initiative with Dr. Jill Biden: Joining Forces, a program designed to assist military families and help veterans find employment after returning from tours of duty.
"The last time you were here you were not First Lady—and now you are," Colbert said. "That's called the Colbert bump."
Later, Colbert grilled the First Lady on a key issue of the 2012 presidential campaign: Nickelodeon's "iCarly."
"As someone who has both appeared on my show and 'iCarly,' which of us has more gravitas?" Colbert asked.
The First Lady didn't provide a definitive answer, but played along with the gag.
"iCarly is about sixteen, and she's real deep," she said.
"I should add some random dancing to my show," Colbert quipped.
Later in the interview, First Lady Obama discussed what attracted her to working with veterans.
Colbert chimed in: "I served in Iraq for almost a week [for the USO], so I consider myself a veteran."
The host topped off the interview by asking the First Lady if she ever ribbed her husband on the fact — according to some polls — that she is more popular than him. She laughed.
First Lady Obama doesn't tease the President, of course.
"He's my man."

Jury selection wrapped up Tuesday for the trial of William Balfour, accused of murdering Oscar winner  and Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew.  The final four panelists were chosen on the second day of questioning of prospective jurors. Among them was a member of an acrobatics group and someone who served on the jury of another murder trial years ago.

The 14 selected earlier to hear evidence against William Balfour included a school teacher, an unemployed bank teller who lives three blocks from court, and a young chocolate-company employee who said her favorite activity outside work was eating and sleeping.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Balfour, 30, wore a blue dress shirt, slacks and a tie, as he watched as nearly 50 potential jurors were questioned by his attorneys and prosecutors during a nine-hour selection process.

Hudson's celebrity took center stage in many juror interviews. Most potential jurors insisted that despite what they knew about Hudson or had heard about the case, they could assess Balfour's guilt or innocence strictly according evidence presented in court. Others were not deemed as impartial.
Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister, is accused of shooting to death Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, brother, Jason Hudson, 29, and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King. Jennifer Hudson is on a 300-name list of potential witnesses and is expected to attend each day of the trial once testimony begins April 23.
Hudson is expected to be at the trial every day once testimony begins, court officials say, and she's on the 300-name list of witnesses who could testify.

William Balfour is accused of killing Hudson's mother, brother and nephew. The 30-year-old Balfour faces a maximum life sentence if convicted.

This trial will definitely have an OJ type of sensationalism that’s for sure.

Us Weekly, reports  that Chicago bred rap star Kanye  West has fallen "genuinely head over heels" for reality show star Kim Kardashian with whom he was photographed gallivanting around NYC late last week.

"It's not a PR stunt," the source insists of the rapper and reality star. "They're perfect for each other. He thinks she's his Beyonce!"
Kim;s sister. Khloe was on The Ellen Show this week and said  they are 'cute together,' and that she thinks her tabloid-plagued sister Kim and the rapper are "cute together."
"Honestly, we've known Kanye forever," she told the talk show host, coyly avoiding direct questions about the rumored coupling. "He's been a great family friend. I love Kanye."
Khloe did hint that there might potentially be something more, however.
"I think friendship is where good relationships stem from," she said. "But honey, you got to get her on the show and ask her."

Can we say more publicity? It seems that Ye and Kim;s PR folk brought them together. Besides, weren’t they rumored of being together way back when?

In unrelated Ye newz, he made a surprise appearance on 106 and Park Monday during rapper 2 Chainz appearance on the show during his interview while talking about working with Kanye on the recent G.O.O.D Music track "Mercy," and Ye came out to join him at "106." And said absolutely nothing during his visit.
Co-host Terrence J \\had to  yell  over the overzealous crowd, "First televised interview with Kanye in a minute!".
2 Chainz continued, ““First of all, I feel like Kanye is the best producer in the world. The way that he describes things, the way that he sees things is different from anyone else," 2 Chainz said. "It’s an honor. It’s a pleasure to just be in the studio with him at the same time, and just clashing worlds. My background, my resume is filled with street credibility music, trap rap and then he kind of brings his colors and images to what I’m doing. So he’ll definitely be a part of my project, dropping August 14th, Based on a T.R.U. Story.”
“We need more Kanyes. He really speaks how he feels," he continued. "A lot of things that I want to say, I don’t feel I’m in a position or have a right or platform to say it,” he said. “It just feels good for him to have the mental capacity to know when to tap into urban America, when to cross over, when to take it overseas. He just has the ability to do so many things, and he’s just including me in the equation."
Wow, Ye has trained him well. LOL.  Now as far as Ye’s appearance being an “interview” was  more of a “view”—as in looking at him. Ye is smart and understands the power of celebrity and hip-hop cred. Besides, he learned from his mentor, Jay Z.

THE BIG STL/NATIONAL NEWZ STORY IS:

Last Sunday, the city of East St Louis got a shout out indirectly on the show, “Saturday Night Live” when it spoofed the mayor, Alvin Parks (played by Keenan Thompson and PICTURED ON RIGHT) and Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney (played by Jason Sudekis) at the city’s city hall. In the opener, the mayor  labeled his city "a hellhole."

"I completely disagree," Parks said. "While it's true we have a lot of things to overcome and a lot of challenges facing us, we are a proud city. The future is bright for East St. Louis."

In the skit, Sudeikis, said “You know, Ann and I have lived and traveled all over the world, but I'll let you in on a little secret,” he says. “The only place that has truly ever felt like home is right here: East St. Louis, Illinois.”

Thompson responded  from behind the campaign podium: “Are you crazy? This is a hellhole.”
Sudekis then said, “Really? I find it to be such a lovely place.”

Thompson assured him: “Trust me, I'm the mayor. This place is a hellhole. We live in a hellhole.”

Another cast member, Chicago career bred Vanessa Bayer,  stated: "Yes, we hate it here."

Parks said on Monday that Saturday Night Live is a "comedy show and it's their job to joke."
"My job is to make East St. Louis better, and that's what I'm doing," he said.
Parks said he first watched the skit this morning.
East St. Louis has spent decades dealing with stunning crime and poverty. Once an industrial hub known for its abundance of jobs, the city has been decimated by political corruption and racial tension. Today, it often serves as a case study for urban decay.

It was later discovered that Mayor Parks was going to write a letter to the exec SNL, Lorne Michaels on the skit to express his feelings on the opener. Our thing is this, with the track record that East St Louis has had in the last 30 years until now, the city’s once thriving landscape has been economically strapped based on the city’s political corruption and thus, social turmoil resulting in crimes and violence. Known for its all nite nightclubs aka East Boogie, lets hope this national platform will get the city to start cleaning its act and be the once thriving city it once was. (Besides, it was once dubbed Little Las Vegas back in its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s). The mayor writing Lorne Michaels is a temporary reaction. Its about making changes from within the city leaders which is the bigger picture.

A right ankle sprain kept Chicago Bull star Derrick  Rose out again for the 23rd time off the court this week in Tuesday night's 98-86 victory over the Knicks at the United Center. He rolled his ankle during the second quarter against these same Knicks on Sunday in New York, his first game back after missing the previous 12 with a groin injury.
Instead, Rose sat for the 23rd "You know how I am: If it's a close game or one I want to get, I'm going to continue to play," Rose said. "I ended up making it worse. It's just an ankle sprain. Hopefully, I'll be over it in a couple of days."

In fact, sources said Rose's ankle showed considerable improvement throughout Tuesday. Rose tested the ankle in front of a bevy of watchful eyes, including team physician Brian Cole, both trainers and the management team of John Paxson and Gar Forman.

Rose could play Thursday against Miami Heat

Former St Louis Cardinal and current Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols returned to the Gateway City for the first time on Tuesday. On his day off off Pujols reportedly  took a short flight covering the 560 miles to his old stomping grounds  for some fatherly duties.

KSDK-TV reported the former Cardinals hero watched his son's Little League game in Chesterfield, Mo. Pujols was reportedly swarmed by excited fans when he arrived. A number of the players reportedly picked up autographs, which Albert was kind enough to sign. Many of the kids' parents attend the same church as Pujols, and they mostly left him alone to be a dad.
Pujols reportedly refused to do an on-camera interview with the local TV station.

Mike Matheny used to run that Little League team Pujols' son plays on, before landing the Cardinals managerial job.

It was nice that the media didn’t push for an interview with Pujols and respected his wishes because we know they were salivatin’ for a comment.

In unrelated Pujols newz,  he currently has no plans for selling his Wildwood residence while intending to continue the Pujols Family Foundation's work in the St. Louis area.

"The Pujols' have never put their house on the market and they are still heavily involved in the community," Foundation chief executive officer Todd Perry said in a statement released Monday.
The family recently listed property in Wildwood, a source familiar with the matter said Monday, but the listing does not include the family residence.

Pujols, who played 11 seasons with the Cardinals before signing in December as a free agent with the Angels, also previously sold a home in Creve Coeur.

Perry additionally sought in Monday's statement to clarify what he called "false reports" and "rumors" about the Foundation closing its Westport offices.

The Foundation especially offers outreach to area residents born with Down syndrome and their families.

Audio tapes was recently released that offer disturbing insight into the tactics of Gregg Williams, the former New Orleans defensive coordinator  and Rams defense coordinator who has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL.
Though the NFL was already in the midst of an investigation of the Saints—who were allegedly running a bounty program that offered players cash if they knocked targeted opposing players off the field or out of the game—Williams offered cash to the player who hit 49ers quarterback Alex Smith in the head during the 2011 NFL playoffs.
Audio released by a documentary filmmaker who was present during Williams' pregame pep talk also reveals the coach instructing players to target both Frank Goreand Kyle Williams' heads, Michael Crabtree's ACL and Vernon Davis' ankles, according to USA Today's Robert Klemko.
Sean Pamphilon, the filmmaker, told Yahoo! Sports' Michael Silver:
At one point Williams says, "We hit [expletive] Smith right there"—then he points under his chin [and continues]—"remember me." Then he rubs his thumb against his index and middle fingers—the cash sign—and says, "I got the first one. I got the first one. Go get it. Go lay that [expletive] out."
Silver writes that earlier in the 12-minute speech, Williams articulated one of his signature phrases to his players: “Kill the head, the body will die.”
Wow, this is too crazy! From face value, without the discovery, the footage looked like just a pep talk to the team, business as usual, but with the bounty discovery, the footage is very incriminating and cringing! Our question is, “How did the footage get leaked to the press?”

A 31-year-old East St. Louis man was shot and killed outside the front door of Yogi & Jackie's Bar and Grill at 2:16 a.m. Monday. Police said they are investigating the murder of Antyan Thomas outside the bar, which is at 1318 N. Ninth St.
The shooter remained on the loose and no motive was known. Mayor Alvin L. Parks Jr. released a statement saying, "The situation is regrettable; the city extends its deepest sympathies to all families involved. The liquor license at the businesswas immediately suspended as is standard procedure when a shooting incident occurs at or near a liquor-selling establishment."

East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks prepares Tuesday to speak about the liquor license for Club 103. Outside that club, a man recently was shot to death. - BND

Two murders in a weekend outside late-night clubs led Parks to impose a 1 a.m. closing time on all liquor-selling businesses for several weeks. He lifted the ban two weekends ago.

Parks has long been under fire from otherlaw enforcement officers and East St Louis native U.S. nen. Dick Durbin, D-Springfield, for allowing the clubs to stay open all night, attracting already inebriated patrons from St. Louis and elsewhere.
St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl Justus said Parks is not concerned about the residents of East St. Louis.
.
"It's very easy to say if the clubs had been closed, this wouldn't have happened. The initial findings in this situation indicates that this young man was going to be killed somewhere. It just happened that it was outside of this club," Parks said. "From what I was told, the young man was being chased and the shooter caught up with him in front of the establishment and shot him."

++++++++++++++++++++++++
And speaking of Durbin, he  returned to his hometown earlier on Wednesday and spoke to a gathering of religious leaders at the Mt. Paran Missionary Baptist Church. He again called for Mayor Alvin Parks to end the city’s late night liquooaking r sales, which he called “an invitation for more murders, more crime.”
The beleaguered city’s current state was crystallized last weekend on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, when the comedy show labeled the town “a hellhole” in a Mitt Romney skit.

“I read about it,” Durbin said. “And you know people can make jokes all they want, but it’s no joke when you’re living in a town where people are getting gunned down, where policemen are getting shot in the face, that’s no joke. I think for all of use who call East St. Louis part of our heritage, we want to make a better day for the city.”

Durbin insisted that a “better day” will dawn when the city takes bold action and curbs late-night club hours. Mayor Alvin Parks disagrees, saying that the clubs bring in much needed tax revenue, which helps to keep police officers on the streets.

Well, one thing we can say, something needs to be done. We don’t know if closing the clubs early is the solution, but at least dialogue is being communicated.

The plan calls for closing a stretch of Memorial Drive. Two alternatives plans were also presented.

HELP BITZ

St. Louis AAU Team. Well we are coming together to raise as much as we can to Sponsor their team. IN efforts to atleast get them some Team Bags, we are asking that each person donate $25 dollars to ensure each player (20 players) all have bags. If we reach this goal, but still have people willing to donate, we will be able to buy them other items such as uniforms, mouth gear, under armer, etc.

These young men are so humble and deserving.... Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. We currently are starting from scratch with a very competitive St. Louis team that will hopefully bring our city recognition of not only local talent, but the amazing STUDENT athletes that we have which will hopefully result in more talent being recruited, more scholarships being given, and more young people being afforded a free college education. Thanking you in advance for any support you can give.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE GIVE US A CALL AT 919-904-4328
+++++++++++++++++++++

IF YOU CAN NOT MAKE THE EVENT, BUT WOULD LIKE TO DONATE, PLEASE GO TOwww.kontrolledkhaos.net. You may make all donations through PayPal!
