OUT 1119--ILLI MO BITZ (APRIL 5-11)

HEY OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THAT TIME AGAIN!!

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH BITZ

This week we feature poet Thomas Stearns Eliot aka T.S. Eloitt.

He was born in Missouri on September 26, 1888. He lived in St. Louis during the first eighteen years of his life and attended Harvard University. In 1910, he left the United States for the Sorbonne, having earned both undergraduate and masters degrees and having contributed several poems to the Harvard Advocate.

After a year in Paris, he returned to Harvard to pursue a doctorate in philosophy, but returned to Europe and settled in England in 1914.  It was in London that Eliot came under the influence of his contemporary Ezra Pound, who recognized his poetic genius at once, and assisted in the publication of his work in a number of magazines, most notably "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" in Poetry in 1915.

His first book of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations, was published in 1917, and immediately established him as a leading poet of the avant-garde. With the publication of The Waste Land in 1922, now considered by many to be the single most influential poetic work of the twentieth century, Eliot's reputation began to grow to nearly mythic proportions; by 1930, and for the next thirty years, he was the most dominant figure in poetry and literary criticism in the English-speaking world.

As a poet, he transmuted his affinity for the English metaphysical poets of the 17th century (most notably John Donne) and the 19th century French symbolist poets (including Baudelaire and Laforgue) into radical innovations in poetic technique and subject matter.

His major later poems include Ash Wednesday (1930) and Four Quartets (1943); his books of literary and social criticism include The Sacred Wood (1920), The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism (1933), After Strange Gods (1934), and Notes Towards the Definition of Culture (1940). Eliot was also an important playwright, whose verse dramas include Murder in the Cathedral, The Family Reunion, and The Cocktail Party.

He became a British citizen in 1927; long associated with the publishing house of Faber & Faber, he published many younger poets, and eventually became director of the firm. from his first wife in 1933, and was remarried, to Valerie Fletcher, in 1956. T. S. Eliot received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948, and died in London in 1965.

THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:

A Twitpic of President Obama posing with Robbins, Ill. native and Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols in the Oval Office of the White House has gone viral. The photo of the president and Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura on the iconic series, was posted on February 29th of this year, but is just bubbling up now. It's a top post today on the trending topics site Buzzfeed.

Trekkies are saying the sudden interest be due to the fact that fellow Star Trek alum George Takei  posted it to his facebook page. The photo of the POTUS and actress throwing up Spock's "Live long and prosper" hand sign has already garnered 27,117 likes, 5,237 shares, and 2,373 comments.

It also has a few fans welcoming President Obama into that special club of Star Trek personae otherwise known as "nerds."
"Black Nerds Unite!" one person who shared the image on her Facebook page chanted virtually.

"Wow, first black female to kiss a white male actor o[n] television. First black president in the white house. Who knew?" cheered one fan of the shot on Takei's Facebook page.
"Who ever would have dreamt this scene forty years ago, they'd have locked you up and thrown away the key. GBA!," (or God Bless America) another Facebook user chimed in.
"She's still just as beautiful as ever!" another added.
Nichols, 79 years old, first played the role that made her famous in 1968.

Hmm, this is interesting that the pic has gone viral NOW and the pic was posted close to two months. Its gonna be interesting if this virality will create a resurgence in  Nichelle Nichols career, maybe like Betty White? We will see.

AND

USA Network's airing of "To Kill a Mockingbird" on Sunday will have a special introduction by none other than President Obama.

It's the 50th anniversary of the movie adaptation of Harper Lee's classic novel. According to the Associated Press, The Alabama author doesn't speak very often, but she says she's honored Mr. Obama is taping an introduction to a special showing of the film based on her 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, her only published book.

USA Network says it will air a fully restored version of the classic movie this Sunday. It will include a brief introduction by the president, who recognized Lee at a White House event last year.

Lee lives in the south Alabama town of Monroeville. In a statement released by the network, Lee says she is deeply honored that Mr. Obama will introduce the movie to a national audience.

The 50-year-old film features late actor Gregory Peck as Alabama attorney Atticus Finch in his fight for justice in a small town for a black man played by late actor Brock Peters (PIC BY AP). The character is based on Lee's father.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" will air Sunday at 8 p.m. ET

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey  was a guest on CBS This Morning  in NYC Monday where her BFF Gayle King is a co-anchor. There, she told Charlie Rose and King that launching the Oprah Winfrey Network was something she wanted to do but “had I known that it was this difficult, I might have done something else.”

“Really?” replied Rose on CBS This Morning. “If you knew it was going to be this difficult, you might have not done it?”

“Oh, absolutely,” Winfrey replied. “I didn’t think it was going to be easy, but I did not know…. If I knew then what I know now, I might have made some different choices.”

She went on to say that if she wrote a book about the experience, she would talk about how OWN wasn’t ready to launch at the time it did.

“It’s like having the wedding when you know you’re not ready…. When I think about it now, now it’s Monday morning quarterbacking. I should have waited until I finished The Oprah Show. The thing I was most worried about was who is going to lead this train, because I can’t do it.”

Winfrey explained that she was hesitant about moving forward with a venture that obviously needed “all hands on deck” to help guide it through the astronomical challenges that lay ahead. But like a nervous bride who desperately wants to avoid the walk down the aisle but feels obligated due to all the hype and eager onlookers

Oprah’s also talked about  latest developments at OWN, her Leadership Academy,  life after her daytime talk show and her series Lifeclass, which  she was in town in NYC to air live and currently touring.

She also made an appearance at Discovery Communications’ Upfront Presentation. Where she tried convincing hundreds of advertising execs to buy more ad time on her OWN network — a co-venture with the Silver Spring-based Discovery.

To see her interview on CBS in the Morning check out the links below

We can just imagine what kind of prep talk her and Gayle done prior to her being a guest on the show. As always, Oprah had her moment of glory with her failures with OWN and using it as a lesson learned and move forward. Lets just hope that she has and see if her ratings will make a dent in the ratings.

In unrelated Oprah newz, she recently did an exclusive interview with Extra’s AJ Calloway, before taping her Lifeclass show last Monday during her tour stop in St Louis (Peabody Opera House).  She spoke on everything from Trayvon Martin to Rosie O’Donnell‘s recent exit from OWN. She also touched on her interview with Whitney Houston‘s daughter Bobbi Kristina.

Oprah Winfrey weighed in on the death of teenager Trayvon Martin. She  said, "It is a tragedy and it is a shame that we're sitting here 33 days later and there hasn't been an arrest, or questioning of what actually happened. It's a tragedy and it is a shame and we all know it."

She identified Zimmerman as the person she would most like to interview. She also commented on the reaction to Martin's death.

"I saw some people on Twitter saying nothing has changed, the same thing's going on," she said. "Lots has changed and you know why? Because black people, white people, brown people, yellow people all over this country and all over the world are saying the same thing... it's a tragedy and it's a shame and justice needs to be served."

And as you know, when Oprah speakeths, things get done, so we will see.

First Lady Michelle Obama was a presenter at the 2012 Nickelodeon annual Kids' Choice Awards last week in Los Angeles. There   she awarded country/pop star Taylor Swift with the "Big Help Award."  Prior to her presentation, FLOTUS used the opportunity to inject the standard talking points into a give-back message.

Michelle said, "I'm here because I've always felt an obligation to give back; to lift up others the way my parents, my teachers and mentors lifted me. And that's something that our next honoree believes, too."

The first lady continued by lauding the benevolent star saying:Taylor Swift ... every step of the way ... always made it a point to give back. She's supported children's charities; she's worked to combat bullying and given away books to schools and libraries all around the country. She's given so much of her own money to victims of natural disasters here and around the world.

When she received her award from Obama,Swift said, "I'm so honored to be receiving this award from the First Lady of the United States. I'm freaking out."

She attended the awards with her daughters Sasha and Mali.

And FLOTUS was dressed hip and chic…And what would an award be without Taylor Swift doing her “OMG” act. LOL

Chicago native talk show host/actress Sherri Shepherd revealed that she received a special letter from Bill Clinton on Wednesday's "The View."

She read it aloud. He wrote: "I was excited to hear that you'll be joining the cast of 'Dancing with the Stars' this season. Good luck with the competition — and all those trips from New York to L.A.! You've got my vote!"

While gearing up for the show, Sherri had told Access Hollywood that she would be courting Clinton's vote. "I'm calling President Clinton, former President Clinton, he's a fan,” she said.

On Wednesday, Sherri said she was "so excited" by his support, and invited Bill and Hillary to be her guests on the program.

In related Shepherd newz,  she downplayed the Dancing with the Stars incident with Jaleel White's recent outburst during a rehearsal with partner Kym Johnson.

According to AllHipHop.com, the producer/emcee is being sued for $500,000 by The Persuaders' Robert "Bobby" Poindexter. The March 27 court filing accuses West of wrongfully using the 1970s New York R&B group's "Trying Girls Out" for his 2006 Freshman Adjustment 2 mixtape, on the cover version of "Girls, Girls, Girls."

Poindexter claims that Kanye’s track contains an illegal sample of the song “Trying Girls Out” by R&B group The Persuaders.
The lawsuit claims that Kanye knew the sample was not cleared, because he used a cleared version of the sample on “Girls Girls Girls” on Jay-Z’s 2001 album The Blueprint.
“I have offered to resolve this matter out of court with Kanye West,” Robert Poindexter told Allhiphop.com. “But in response, he has refused to even discuss any ‘out-of-court’ resolutions whatsoever. Nor has he provided any evidence that he is demanding others to cease and desist from selling the illegal version.”
Robert Poindexter seeks $500,000 in damages from Kanye West.

OTHER STL NEWZ

THE BIG STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Former St. Louis Rams player Torry Holt signed a one-day contract this week so he could retire with the St. Louis Rams, where he was a key part of a 1999 Super Bowl champion and the Greatest Show on Turf.

"I want my legacy to be a guy that respected the game of football, a guy that respected his teammates, his coaches, challenged guys on a day-to-day basis, whether I said something or didn't say anything, and just loved playing," Holt said Wednesday during a press conference at Rams Park. "This being a childhood dream of mine, how many of us can say that we're doing what we dreamed of doing?"

Holt was a seven-time Pro Bowler with St. Louis from 1999-2008 and was selected to the NFL's All-Decade team for the 2000s, setting a league record with six consecutive seasons of at least 1,300 yards receiving. (PIC BY NFL.COM)

According to reports, The Bank of America is suing St Louis based developers Michael and Steven Roberts for more than $34 million, alleging the brothers are in default on a loan connected to several hotels they own outside of Missouri.

Bank of America reportedly  filed the federal lawsuit Tuesday in St. Louis naming the Roberts brothers individually and in their capacities as trustees of revocable trusts. The lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges the Roberts brothers reportedly owe Bank of America $34.28 million in principal and $376,049 in interest on a loan made in 2007 connected to hotels in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Shreveport, La., Spartanburg, S.C. and Tampa.

The original amount loaned was $43 million.

The Roberts brothers, who, in the St Louis area,  owns the Roberts Mayfair Hotel in downtown St. Louis and a Comfort Inn in the Central West  End and, Roberts Broadcasting WRBU-Channel 46  ,   are each 50 percent guarantors on the loan, according to court documents.

WOW. As they say when it rains, it pours. Looks like The Roberts Brothers will be selling a lot of their properties, but they have been reported in the past as saying they will not sale their STL based properties, but now with the current lawsuit, it could be likely that the brothers may have to do that.

The controversial film, “Bully”  will be screened April 15 at Landmark Plaza Frontenac. The film that depicts “a year in the life” of North America’s bullying crisis.  At the conclusion of the film, participants are invited to engage in an anti-bullying training session and unique discussion on how they can make their communities a safe place. The film made headline recently when the producers battled with the Motion Picture Association on placing an R rating on the movie because the film contained a few F-words and its shunning of youngsters in attending due to the picture without a parent. The film was settled with a non rating with parents’ permission.

U.S. District Court has voted against the U.S. Governments claim against the St. Louis Art Museum and its holding of an Egyptian artifact. The courts reportedly threw out the government's lawsuit this week that had sought the removal to Egypt of the museum's luminous Mummy Mask of Ka-nefer-nefer, which it had bought from Phoenix Ancient Art in 1998

Egypt had long fought for the mummy's return, but SLAM director Brent Benjamin, although vilified by Egypt's former antiquities chief, Zahi Hawass, and criticized by members of the archaeological community, stood his ground, insisting that Egypt had not proven its claim of ownership.

On Jan. 13 the U.S. Attorney's Office in St. Louis reportedly warned the museum of its intention "to seize and forfeit" the mask, impelling the SLAM to file a complaint seeking dismissal of the government's lawsuit.
