HEY OUTTOWNERS!

TIME TO GT TOWNED!!!

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A GRAND CELEBRATION of OUTTOWN's 1,000th POSTING COMING SOON!

As we continue WOMENS HISTORY MONTH, we spotlight dancer/activist Josephine Baker.

Born Freda Josephine McDonald, June 3, 1906, in East St. Louis, Josephine escaped a life of poverty to become a theater sensation. After a year of performing with the Jones Family Band and the Dixie Steppers, Josephine Baker(who got her surname from her second husband) went to New York where she eventually got a part in the chorus for Shuffle Along, the first successful black musical. She went to Paris in 1925 and became famous while singing and dancing in La Revue Negre as well as her infamous banana dance.

Baker’s success, in theater and in movies, continued during her time in France, and she became a French citizen after marrying Jean Lion. Her love of France was evident in her participation in the French Resistance during World War II. She was made a sublieutenant in the Women’s Auxiliary of the French Air Force and earned a medal for her work on behalf of the Allies.

Baker was shocked by the racism in America when she toured in 1951. She refused to perform for segregated audiences and devoted the rest of her life to the civil rights movement. She spoke at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963-an event that peaceably brought together civil rights groups and leaders to support the passage of civil rights legislation. .

Baker and her fourth husband, Jo Bouillon, lived in a French chateau they called Les Milandes with their 12 adopted children of different races and ethnic backgrounds dubbed the Rainbow Tribe . Baker continued to perform in order to support her large family, but she was unable to keep up with the costs of her large estate, and the bank foreclosed on her home in 1969.

This setback did not stop Baker. She continued doing what she loved: singing and dancing. A few days before her death of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1975, at the age of 69, she had performed before a sold-out crowd in Paris. Baker was given a twenty-one gun salute at her funeral in Paris, France, and thousands of people lined the streets to honor her.

THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:

That was announced last week– According to TMZ, when tickets went on sale for it, it sold out in just 18 minutes ... and now he's planning on adding extra shows. Only in AmericaLOL

Oprah Winfrey now has a place in the Illinois Broadcasters Association's Hall of Fame.

The Queen of Talk will be inducted as its sole inductee at a luncheon ceremony on May 3.

"Oprah is the epitome of broadcasting excellence," said Dennis Lyle, president/CEO of the Illinois Broadcasters Association on the IBA website, "how fortunate for us that she chose Illinois to remain her stage through each phase of her career that has seen her skyrocket from local talk show host to national treasure to the global media personality she's become today."Winfrey came to the Windy City in 1984. In 1986, she launched the "Oprah Winfrey Show" under her new Chicago production company, Harpo Productions. The award-winning show is seen in nearly 150 countries around the world. It will come to an end in September.

In other Oprah awards, she was honored (indirectly) in two categories at the GLAAD Awards recently. For: outstanding talk show episode for Ricky Martin's coming-out episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and outstanding magazine article for an O, The Oprah Magazine essay by a woman who unknowingly fell in love with a transgendered man.

Talk show host/actress Sherri Shepherd appeared on 'The View' this week wearing a dress backward. Still, it wasn't an obvious fashion faux pas and probably would have gone unnoticed if her colleague Whoopi Goldberg hadn't called attention to it. After Goldberg does so, Shepherd seems compelled to defend herself. "You can't tell," she said, pointing out that the dress looks the same from either direction.

"But it's not fitting here," she complained, gesturing to her chest, "because there's not supposed to be anything here."

We wouldnt be surprised that women will start wearing their dress backwards. All it takes is one. LOL

To see the clothing snafu go to:

http://www.tvsquad.com/2011/03/21/sherri-shepherd-wears-dress-backward-the-view/

In related newz and Sherri's TV career, as co-host of the Emmy Award winning, "The View" , she is continuing her stride on other TV projects simulatneously. She is also hosting the "Newlywed Game" on the Ganme Network, and is gettig raves for her role as Angie Jordan the reality show star on 30 Rock who's married to actor Tracy Jordan (played by Tracy Morgan), The hit show returned last week after a brief three-week break. Shepherd is also filming a new pilot and the tentative title of it is Soda Jerks. And it's about a woman, Christine Taylor who comes to a small Midwestern town and takes over an office.

BFFs STL raised Niecy Nash and Sherri Shepherd, who will serve as bridesmaids in one another's upcoming nuptials had her bridal shower over the weekend. There, Niecy confessed she has yet to choose a bridal gown to accentuate the jiggly bits she made famous on "Dancing with the Stars." "I don't know how many dresses I might wear," the soon-to-be Mrs. admitted. "Three, maybe four." Also on the lengthy to-do list is booking a honeymoon. She wants "to work on my tan and snorkel" on her romantic getaway.

Niecy wouldn't mind the royal treatment for her big day. "I don't know if Kate Middleton is finished working with her people to get her together, but maybe she can let me borrow so they can get me together," she said in hopes of enlisting extra help.

A tinge of jealously sealed the deal between Niecy and fiancé Jay Tucker. "When Jay and I first met I didn't know he was the man I was going to marry until I saw him talking to another girl," she said. The happy couple also played the role of matchmakers for bride-to-be Sherri of "The View."

Niecy lit up at the end of her shower when her fiancé surprised her with a large bouquet of roses. The beautiful grounds of a lush Los Angeles mansion hosted the bridal bash with flowers provided by Eddie Zaratsian, creative director of Tic-Tock Couture Florals. Niecy and Jay's wedding will be broadcast in a TLC special shortly after the May affair.

Chicago's own Kanye West put the icing on the cake at this years South by South West Music Festival in Austin, TX this past weekend. West and his G.O.O.D. music label took over the VEVO Power Station and performed for a compact and celebrity filled audience last Saturday night. Performers with him were Kid Cudi (PICTURED), John Legend, and Jay-Z were just some of the artists who kept the performances rolling into the wee-hours of the night.Mr. West himself was scheduled last on the long list of acts, and closed the show in a set that lasted until 4:00AM.

Detroit Free Press reported that an appeals court ruling against Universal Music Group – the world’s largest record company – states that UMG must pay St. Joseph. Mo native Eminem and his former Michigan based production team F.B.T. Productions increased royalties stemming from a 2007 lawsuit.

The suit was drawn up as a result of Universal stating to Eminem’s production squad that 18% was all they were owed on royalties stemming from digital sales. Eminem and F.B.T.’s legal team argued that because online sales are considered licensing agreements by Universal that they were due 50% of all sales. An earlier court decision ruled in favor of this language back in September.

The money that could be due to F.B.T. Productions isn’t exactly chump change either. “For us, this is probably a $40 million to $50 million issue,” said F.B.T.’s Joel Martin. “Every artist who has this sort of language in their contract is now going to go back to their record company and say, ‘OK, so what do you want to do about (download royalties)?’”

The F.B.T Productions team includes brother team Mark and Jeff Bass, both who played instruments on some of Eminem’s earlier recordings and shared production credits with the Detroit star on a variety of tracks over the years.

A ruling of this magnitude isn’t thought by Universal’s side to impact how they do business but some experts feel this could change royalty negotiations forever. Eminem, while not directly involved in enacting the suit, has yet to comment.

Disco singer Loleatta Holloway, known for the 1980 hit "Love Sensation," died this week. Her manager, Ron Richardson, says Holloway died of heart failure Monday night at a suburban Chicago hospital. She was 64. Holloway recorded several disco singles, including "Hit and Run" and "Runaway." But she's best known for "Love Sensation." Her vocals were sampled by Black Box for the 1989 hit "Ride on Time" and by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch for the song "Good Vibrations" in 1991. Holloway was born in Chicago in 1946. She began singing gospel with the Holloway Community Singers and later with The Caravans. Her solo career began in the 1970s. Richardson said funeral arrangements were pending, but that her family planned to hold a public memorial.

THE BIG STL STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Mizzou coach Mike Anderson has been let go of his contract coaching the Mizzou Tigers to coach with the Arkansas Razorbacks. The university Board of Curators was asked Tuesday to consider a contract extension that would add two years to the five Anderson has remaining and boost his guaranteed salary to around $2 million from just over $1.5 million.

The curators and MU athletics director Mike Alden eventually withdrew the deal at the meeting held in Rolla, Mo.

During negotiations, Anderson was allowed to travel to Arkansas to talk with them from a loophole in his contract. Soon after, Anderson signed a deal with Arkansas. Anderson flew into Columbia late Wednesday afternoon after spending two days in Oklahoma attending the funeral of a close friend and thinking of his future at Arkansas. A cadre of reporters was waiting at Columbia Regional Airport, but airport officials went out of their way to disguise Anderson’s arrival.

Reporters, standing outside a fence near the runway, saw a small airplane land but were told to move back. Two airport vehicles pulled up near the airplane, blocking the view of those who emerged from it and got into a waiting car.

Anderson’s only words came in Arkansas’ announcement, which was released at the same time he was talking to the MU players.

“I am extremely excited to once again be a part of this special university and Razorback athletics,” Anderson said in the news release. “With the continued passionate support of all Razorback fans, I am confident that we will have the opportunity to succeed on and off the court and continue to build on the University of Arkansas’ championship tradition.”

While Anderson first had asked permission to talk with Arkansas on Tuesday night, Alden said it was not until 6:45 p.m. Wednesday that Anderson told Alden he was leaving.

Anderson was making $1.55 million a season but an offer for a raise to $2 million per year and two additional years to his current seven-year contract reached fruition a week ago after five months of discussions.

Reports indicated Arkansas was offering only $200,000 more a year to hire Anderson. But by the time he made his decision, the MU offer, Alden said, had been withdrawn, a condition to Anderson being allowed to talk to Arkansas. Anderson also has to pay a $550,000 penalty for leaving.

So who wins? Anderson, Who loses. The MU organization.

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ?????????????????????????????

Why are prisoners able to get on Facebook? Why did Claire Mcaskill forget to pay her property tax bill on her family plane? Why does it seem as though we are not getting the full story as to what happen with Mizzou coach Mike Anderson leaving the organization? Why hasnt Chris Brown learned about handling the media when it comes to his case with Rihanna? And why did he tear up his backstage area after his interview with Good Morning America after he gave them the OK for them to talk about the Rihanna snafu? Why did Wyclef Jean get shot in his hand in Haiti? Why is Sammy Hagar claiming he was encountered by aliens when he was a child? And why are folk tripping off that Erykah Badu has armpit hair?

BLACK REP BITZ

THE REAL McCOY

By Andrew Moodie

Elijah McCoy may be the greatest inventor you have never heard of. A prodigy since birth, his lifetime of study eventually led him to an invention that changed modern transportation forever, the self-lubricating steam engine. And that’s just one of the many inventions society can thank him for, as we’ll learn in this historical work making its U.S. Premiere. His personal and professional lives can be measured in equal parts triumph and tragedy as he struggles to make his way as an African-American inventor at the turn of the 19th century.
