March is Womens History Month where the historic and remarkable accomplishments of women in this country are celebrated. OUTTOWN will highlight famous women in arts and entertainment from the ILLIMO area

This week we highlight the late singer Dinah Washington

Dinah Washington (August 29, 1924 – December 14, 1963), born Ruth Lee Jones, was a blues, R&B and jazz singer. She has been cited as "the most popular black female recording artist of the '50s",[1] and called "The Queen of the Blues".[2] She is a 1986 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame,[3] and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993

Ruth Jones was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and moved to Chicago as a child.

In 1959, she had her first top ten pop hit, with a version of "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes", which made # 4 on the US pop chart.

She died from a drug overdose at the age of 39. She is buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.

THE BIG ILLI MO A&E STORIES INVOLVE THE OSCARS

First,
British born and brief St, Louis resident Colin Firth continued his award season landing an Oscar Sunday for his portrayal of the chronic stutterer King George VI in " The King's Speech” at the 83rd Academy Awards.

"I have a feeling my career's just peaked." Firth quipped at the Academy Awards . The actor was also awarded the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor for the role.

In related newz, Firth was one of several guests on Oprah’s post-Oscar round out special that was taped after the Oscars and aired on ABC Prime Time . (SEE BELOW OR THIS STORY)

He also made an appearance on TV personality Ellen Degeneres’’ talk show during her morning meeting on Tuesday by dropping by to show off his Oscar. The actor appeared on the comedienne's show last week and promised to return if he won gold on Sunday for The King's Speech.

And he won.

Firth couldn't appear on the show because he had to dash back to England, so he decided to surprise Ellen on his way to the airport and thank her for the underwear gift (Oscar underwear for his award) she gave him the week before, and show off a pair he'd crafted for his award.

He said, "I just had to drop by and thank you for the underwear."

The thrilled TV personality was so delighted by surprise guest, she picked up a tannoy speaker and yelled out of her window, "I have Colin Firth here... in my office, everybody... He won an Oscar for The King's Speech."

Tourists traveling through the lot were also stunned to see Firth as DeGeneres escorted him out of her building.

He held up his Oscar and said, "Well, this is turning into an occasion!"

DeGeneres aired the footage later on her daily show.

In more ILLIMO Oscar newz:

Chicago based talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey was one of the presenters at the 2011 Oscars held at the Kodak Theater on Sunday (February 27) in Los Angeles. She wore a Zac Posen gown and presented the Best Documentary Award to the filmmakers of “Inside Job.”

AND

Oprah Winfrey hosted a post Oscars special show on Feb 28 on ABC. This is the seventh year that Oprah has hosted an After the Oscars Show, rounding up the highlights of the previous night. Oprah hosted the roundup of the Academy Awards, with interviews with principles of Best Picture winner "The King's Speech." Appearing were Best Actor winner Colin Firth, Best Director winner Tom Hooper and Best Supporting Actor nominee Geoffrey Rush. Also on the show a was Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway , Melissa Leo, who won Best Supporting Actress for "The Fighter" a fashion summary by upcoming OWN personality Carson Kessley, who , when asked about the best dressed men at the Oscars , Kressley named Colin Firth. Oprah's show ended with a surprise. The Children's Choir was singing "Firework" and out stepped pop star Katy Perry, dressed all in gold to join the children in song. Perry flew all night from Vienna to appear on the show with Oprah and the children.

OWN is set to be in high definition. Beginning today, Thursday, March 3rd, DISH is adding OWN to it’s line-up of high definition channels. You can find it on Channel 189 (if your subscription includes their hi-def offerings, of course.).

In related newz, Oprah Winfrey has received an invitation from Egypt’s new minister of tourism to do a show in Cairo’s Tahrir Square–the center of the recent Egyptian revolution. It’s part of an effort by the minister, Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour, to boost tourism to the country. Nour also invited other celebrities to come to Egypt, according to USA Today. Tahrir Square is already becoming a tourist destination, with several guided tours already organized for people to see ground zero of Egypt’s historic uprising. So far, Oprah has yet to RSVP.

Well, if anybody to save the world The O can!

In more ILLI MO Oscar newz:

Chicago native award wining singer/actress Jennifer Hudson was the talk on the Oscar Red Carpet. Hudson arrived at the awards in an orange/tangerine Versace gown that showed off her ever slimming physique. Hudson introduced the performance of Florence Welch and A.R. Rahman, singing "If I Rise" from "127 Hours." Since becoming the face of Weight Watchers, Jennifer Hudson has dropping the pounds , losing a total of five dress sizes and 80 pounds through rigorous exercise and a strict Weight Watchers diet, Depending upon which report you read, Jennifer Hudson's 2011 Oscar gown made both the best dressed and worst dressed list.

We think she looked stunning.

In other J Hud newz, prior to the Oscars, Hudson was one of the honorees at the Essence's Black Women in Hollywood luncheon. bringing along her one year old son David Otunga Jr., Jennifer Hudson gazed out at the audience, a sea of famous faces, and thanked everyone in the room for the award she was about to receive.

“I’ve sat back and watched all of you, and you are what inspired me,” said Hudson, an honoree, along with Angela Bassett, Viola Davis and Loretta Devine. “This is a first for me,” she added, “that I’ve walked into an event and I actually know who everybody is.”

Indeed, it was quite the star-studded crowd. Forest Whitaker, Amy Adams, Sharon Leal, Anika Noni Rose and Michael Patrick King, director of the “Sex in the City” films, came to introduce the award recipients. Kerry Washington, Kimora Lee Simmons, Serena Williams, Gabrielle Union, Garcelle Beauvais and Brandy were among the 340 invited guests

And in more J Hud news, she will be the special music guest on The Tom Joyner Morning Radio Show this Thursday morning for the show's Red Velvet Cake Room segment.(The show repeats at www.tjms.com) .

Although it may sound a bit rugged and crude, Ye is actually right. If folk don’t want to have childen, use protection! And those guys in the public eye with cash be careful who you hook up with—can we say condom to turkey baster? LOL We still don’t understand why Lily Allen was upset because, although she had a miscarriage and that was tragic in itself, Ye was talking about precaution of unwanted groupie inflicted children. We don’t get it!

In unrelated Ye newz, the video for his song "All of the Lights" has been pulled from YouTube over concerns that it may cause people with photosensitive epilepsy to have seizures.

And in more unrelated Ye newz, jazz pianist Robert Glasper and his Robert Glasper Experiment played a show at New York City's Blue Note jazz club on last Saturday and a couple of surprise guest popped up: Kanye West and his label signee raptor Mos Def showed up and freestyled for the room. While Mos spit a typical freestyle, Kanye went off on a much longer rant, expressing his still-standing anger towards the media. "Every day of my life, people try to tell me that I hate the Whites, because I say what's right/ I go to sleep and deal with it every night," rapped Kanye West. "Black people wanna talk about me on blogs because I like clothes, like 'look at this bag,'/ it's what I have to deal with, real shit, y'all don't even understand what it takes to be a real man/ a Black man interested in art, speaking from the heart and playing my part/ and all this illuminati talk, like my first single wasn't 'Jesus Walks.'"

'Ye and Mos Def's impromptu performances were received with applauses and shouts from the impressed crowd.

Hmm quite impressive commentary on Ye's part on how white people think he is a racist and black people think he is effeminate and part of a blood cult. But as they say it’s all in the mind, the rest is whether it’s true or when it is exposed, capturing the imagination of one and all.

Lastly of the Ye newz, mediatakeout had a pic of Ye showing his torso and the top of his pubic hair that was sent via cellphone to a supposed unreported R&B female singer to hook up a sex date. According to the gossip site, the singer, who is known to pass out the cooch like she was giving out GOVERNMENT CHEESE, never allowed Ye to get any though. So the two are just friends, and make great music together.

Hmm wonder who the singer is? Any guesses? We think its Rihanna.

+++++++++++++++++++++

St. Joseph, Mo native rap star Eminem made newz this week in regards to razor sharp lyrics regarding who’s the best rapper in the game. Thisis50.com released lyrics to an unheard verse by Eminem from “I Get Money.” In the song, Eminem mentions Jay and Kanye West. The lyrics are:

"They keep on saying the same rappers are the best, Jay-Z & Kanye West/ Maybe they’re just trying to distract you from the fact that I’m coming back/ Or maybe it’s cause I ain’t Black, Maybe it’s because of that, Maybe it’s because I’m the highest selling artist in rap"

Hmm, all we can say is great commentary. Eminem is like Elvis, The Osmonds, and New Kids on the Block and current Britney Spears—white artist who hit it big performing and initiating a black music style and crowning the music style. Em will always be an anomaly.

First the Auto tuned viral video hit, then the TV appearances, then the Halloween costumes , then the reality show deal. Whats next? Of course—cinema. Well Chicgao native Internet sensation Antoine Dodson is about to debut in a feature film, He, along with other viral stars, will star in the upcoming movie, "The Chronicles of Rick Roll" with a bunch of other viral video stars. The producer of the film, Andrew Fischer of Nurv.com, has been planning this film for over six months now, and he's aiming for a theatrical release. The movie will be an "epic comedy," and that a longer trailer will be released soon to reveal more details of the film.

Are his 15 minutes about to go into overtime? LOL

As the Cardinals train for the upcoming season, the freak accidents continue to accrue for the camp. After pitcher Adam Wainwright was sidelined after injuring his pitching arm

(and had the Tommy John surgery which will defer him 12 to 15 months missing this season , but geared for the start of 2012). Two events happened back to back with two of the pitchers who were second and third on the roster after its headman Wainwright was sidelined.
