THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:

President Barack and First lady Michelle Obama were on hand Sunday to salute entertainment luminaries Chicago based talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey, pop singer Sir Paul McCartney, country singer Merle Haggard, composer Jerry Herman and dancer Bill T. Jones with the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C.

Honoree Oprah Winfrey with fellow honoree Sir Paul McCartney.

The svelte Jennifer Hudson serenaded Oprah at the event.

Hollywood's A-List was also there to congratulate the honorees, reports the Associated Press.Julia Roberts, John Travolta and Barbara Walters each offered personal reflections of their relationships with Winfrey, and Oscar winner and Chitown native Jennifer Hudson, who made newz with her size five frame, serenaded the CEO of Harpo Productions with "I'm Here" from The Color Purple that was produced on Broadway by Winfrey (Hmm Fantasia where was she to do this song?) .

"Simply put, she is the best interviewer ever," Walters said. "No one comes close - not even me. And those of you know me know how painful it was for me to say that."

Also on the show President Obama said, "Although the honorees on this stage each possess a staggering amount of talent, the truth is, they aren't being recognized tonight simply because of their careers as great lyricists or songwriters or dancers or entertainers. Instead, they're being honored for their unique ability to bring us closer together and to capture something larger about who we are -- not just as Americans, but as human beings."

This year's Kennedy Center Honors will air on CBS on December 28.

In related newz, President Obama is making newz on what words that come out of his stitched lip these days—and one word in particular “superfluous.” During Sunday night's Kennedy Center awards ceremony, Obama was quoting an opinion by former Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes at the Kennedy Center festivities, when he tripped up over the sibilant word.

"It's this lip. It's hard to say," Obama explained to a laughing audience after he repeatedly tried, and failed, to pronounce the word. "You try it when you've had 12 stitches." Eventually, the president nailed it, and the audience applauded.

In unrelated newz, Obama will call the Tom Joyner Morning Show on Friday.

In unrelated Oprah newz, she joined 300 eager audience members Wednesday in Australia, where they were flown in for an eight-day action-packed, Down Under adventure including close encounters with kangaroos, surfing lessons and a journey to the remote and dusty Outback. Winfrey kicked off her 25th and final season of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in September by surprising her audience with one of her biggest giveaways ever: an eight-day trip to Australia. Audience members were hand-picked by Winfrey's staffers, who considered them the program's most loyal viewers.

Winfrey landed in the northeast coastal city of Cairns where her jet refueled before flying to Hamilton Island, on the Great Barrier Reef, to join some audience members awaiting her arrival. The audience arrived from the U.S. on Tuesday.

On the tropical resort island, Winfrey drove a golf buggy to a wildlife park where she enjoyed the sights of Australian native fauna and cuddled a koala.

"I have been here one hour and I've seen two koalas mating already," Winfrey told Ten Network television on the island.

She along with 90 audience members had a barbecue dinner cooked by Australian celebrity chef Curtis Stone on Wednesday. Then today, Thursday to Uluru, Australia's famous red sandstone monolith in the central Outback which is also known as Ayers Rock.

"The reason why I wanted to go to Uluru (singer) Paul Simon called me and said 'you must.' He said 'not to be missed,'" said Winfrey

.

She apologized to fans who had gathered at the Cairns airport, hoping in vain to catch a glimpse of the talk show queen. She said Australian customs officials had refused her permission to leave her plane.

Jodie Price said Winfrey's arrival was more exciting than a visit from the royal family.

Speaking of the audience members he went Down Under, when they landed, they were like the Beatles first landing to America in 1984 as the media swarmed them when they exited the plane waving at reporters and photographers as they were ushered through Sydney airport and onto a bus, which whisked them away to a hotel for a briefing and a traditional Aboriginal dance performance.

In more Oprah newz, it was revealed Wednesday that on Barbara Walters Most Fascinating Show, which airs tonite on ABC, she talks about the lesbian rumors saying she isn’t a lesbian, not even kind of a lesbian with her BFF Gail King. On King she said, “ She is the mother I never had. She is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don't know a better person," Winfrey said of King, fighting back tears. "It's making me cry because I'm thinking about how much I probably have never told her that. Tissue please," she added.

King and Winfrey, 56, met while working at a local Baltimore TV station in the 1980s and have been inseparable professionally and personally, sparking much media speculation that they are gay.

"I'm not a lesbian. I'm not even kind of a lesbian," Winfrey told Walters. "And the reason why it irritates me is because it means that somebody must think I'm lying. That's number one. Number two...why would you want to hide it? That is not the way I run my life."

Winfrey, said that businessman Stedman Graham was still her lover and mate after more than 20 years together, despite the fact they are now rarely seen in public together.

"I made a conscious effort around 2003, 2004 to pull back on my public appearances with Stedman," she said.

But denying speculation that the pair had split up, she told Walters he was "the love, the lover, the man, the partner, the mate" of her life.

Winfrey also was interviewed in her own magazine, O, in the latest issue about ending her longtime daytime show in Sept 2011 and launching the new cable TV network, OWN, in January saying that sometimes she felt it may have .

“I have never felt such fear in all my life...I was afraid of failing., “ she said. “I was afraid it wouldn't be what 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' has been, and has meant, for all these years.”

So what yawl think? You think Oprah is telling the truth? As they say, regardless of what it said, folk gonna believe what they wanna believe.

++

And in more Oprah newz, she has signed on to star in the role of Mama Nadi in the HBO film, an adaptation of the Lynn Nottage book of the same name. The novel tells the tale of a woman in war-torn Congo who tries to stop the women working for her from getting caught in the war between rebel armies and the country's government. Nottage - who won a Pulitzer prize for the book - is adapting the screenplay for the project, while Oprah will produce the film.

And in even more Oprah newz, she and Chicago native award winning author Jonathan Franzen had a “kiss face” and put their rocky past behind them. Franzen appeared on Monday’s "The Oprah Winfrey Show," embracing his host after she chose his bestselling novel "Freedom" for her popular book club.

"Bottom line is, I’m happy to have you," Winfrey said. And he replied he was happy to be there too (KISS KISS. LOL).

The brouhaha between them happened in 2001 when Winfrey did not have Franzen when his previous novel "The Corrections" was a book club selection, because he called some of her choices "schmaltzy." Franzen, was branded as a snob for the comment even though he apologized quickly and repeatedly.

Winfrey said on the show she didn’t have Franzen on her show then because she didn’t want him to feel "uncomfortable.” Franzen, who was the subject of a Time Magazine cover story, titled "Great American Novelist." told Winfrey he considers himself a "Midwest egalitarian." The pair discussed Franzen’s writing process and his visit with President Barack Obama.

Urban blogsite Media Take Out has drawn some fire for a supposedly bogus story about reality star Kim Kardashian being preggo with Chicago bred rap star Kanye West’s baby. According to the story, their sources claimed to have spoken to a person “very close” to Kim who revealed that the reality star is pregnant and the father of the baby is Kanye because, as the source claimed: “Kim has been seeing Kanye [West] off and on for years now. But this summer, they [hooked up] five or six times.”

“Kim is being very secretive about everything,” the source continued. “She calls [Kanye] almost non stop and wants to know what she should do.”

Media Take Out speculated that an announcement is coming soon.

Hmm, well as they say, we will see in a few months whether she is pregnant and if the father will be reveled if she is. Folk give MediaTakeout for reporting outlandish stories, but, like National Inquirer, sometimes they get it right.

In unrelated newz, West’s "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," fell from its debut at No,. 1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and fell to No. 7 with 108,000 copies, selling a total of over 500,000 and achieving gold status in two weeks. Meanwhile the CD stays atop the R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart for a second week and the Rap Album chart as well for the same number of weeks.

Chicago native and 2011 double Grammy nominee R Kelly showcased his "Love Letter" on Jimmy Fallon’s show this week with a two-night stay on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." The R&B king performed two songs from his forthcoming 11th studio album on the episodes that aired Dec. 6 and 7. Kelly sang "When a Woman Loves," the slow-burning first single from "Love Letter," on Dec. 6, while the uptempo title track was performed Dec. 7. The performance will mark the first time a musical guest will take the "Fallon" stage on back-to-back nights. R. Kelly Sending Out 'Love Letter' on Dec. 14 is the follow-up to Kelly's 2009 effort "Untitled," One of the songs on his upcoming CD is his homage to his mentor, the late Michael Jackson with his version of “You Are Not Alone,” a bonus track included on his new album . Kellz originally wrote and co-produced the chart-topping ballad for the King of Pop in 1995. “In love and memories of my hero, MJ forever,” says The R before belting out the song.

R Kelly's 2011 Grammy nominated song, "When A Woman Loves" continues its slow move up teh Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Songs Chart moving one spot up to No. 21 in ist 15th week on that chart.

Last week, the 53rd Annual Grammy Award nominations were announced and the big nominee was St. Joseph. Mo native Eminem with 10. Nods also were given out to Chicagoans Common and R Kelly, STL resident Ron Isley and Granite City, Ill. raised Gretchen Wilson. Other notables in the ILLI MO area were also nominated:

Chicago native gospel/soul singer Mavis Staples was nominated for a Grammy for Best Americana Album for "You Are Not Alone," the acclaimed record she made with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy.

AND

Blues legend Buddy Guy for Best Comtemporary Blues Album, "Living Proof."

AND

2008 Album of the Year Winner Herbie Hancock is up for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for "A Change Is Gonna Come" and Pop Collaboration with Vocals ("Imagine," with Larry Klein), both from "The Imagine Project."

AND

Oak Park, Ill. native comedian Kathy Griffin was nominated again for Best Comedy Album this time for "Kathy Griffin Does the Bible Belt."

Also, we found out that St. Louis resident recording mixer Adam Long is up for a Grammy Award with his music partner Robert Sher for Best Show Recording for the Tony-Award winning Broadway show, "Fela!"
The Grammy Awards will be televised Feb. 13 on CBS.
UPDATE: The 2010 Billboard Year End Charts have been published this week and Eminem copped the No. 7 Song of the Year with "Love the Way You Lie" and the No, 21 song with "Not Afraid." on the Hot 100 He also was featured on the No. 71 song of the year, Drake's "Forever" that also featured Chicago bred Kanye West and Lil Wayne. He also had the No,. 2 Album of the Year and the No. 1 R&B/Hp Hop Album of the Year with "Recovery."

Speaking of Kathy Griffin, she made newz this week hosting the VH1 Divas Salute to the Troops that was aired Sunday at the San Diego Marine Corps Air Hangar. Although the scheduled acts performed their respective sets (Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj), the highlight was Griffin, who opened the show wearing a modicum of a camouflage patterned bikini and showcasing her surgically-chiseled frame, got booed by the Marines in the crowd when she cracked jokes about dancing With The Stars finalist Bristol Palin’s weight saying, “ She’s the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight. No, come on, come on. She gained like 30 pounds a week, I swear to God, it was fantastic. She’s like the white Precious.”

FUNNY BUT OUCH!

Palin repordtely responded on Fox News' blog: “The audience’s reaction to this ‘comedian’ spoke volumes, and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too. I hope people didn’t have to pay money to hear her negativity and criticisms.” (Uhhh, More fodder for Griffin!)

Huh? Bristol (as well as the Marines who booed) need to blow it up. Folks who are used to Griffin’s sardonic topical humor wasn’t surprised that she went there. And besides, Griffin wasn’t the only person to mention Palin’s oncoming weight gain on the show! (and she also cracked on actress Gabourey Sidibe as well with the “Precious’ reference”) . It was true that Bristol was the only contestant in Dancing with the Stars history who left the competition with more weight packed on than losing. That’s hilarious in itself. We think it was a hilarious joke actually. These bleeding Tea Parters need to get a life. Griffin is a smart cemdian. She knows which buttons to push to get attention (remember her “Suck it, Jesus Emmy speech a couple years ago?) and she did it in wardrobe and on the mic.

STL based rap mogul Nelly will reportedly take his talents to Beverly Hills for an appearance on the CW’s “90210.’ According to Movieline, the rapper will play himself in an episode of the show after the show returns from the X-mas break. The storyline is said to focus on Dixon (played by Tristan Wilds) and Navid (played by Michael Steger) getting involved in the video shoot for Nelly’s song “She’s So Fly.”This will be Nelly’s second acting bit in a TV series. The first was his recurring part on "CSI: NY," last year.

Hmm, if the Nellster was going to attract the tweens, we think a wiser choice could have been “Glee.” Right??? It wudda been cool to see the Glee team singing his hit “Just A Dream.” We just sayin.

This week on the charts, Nelly’s comeback hit, "Just A Dream" continues to rest in the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 chart this week falling one spot to No.9 in its 16th week on that chart. It peaked at No. 3. Meanwhile his CD, "5.0" continues its deep slide down the Billboard 200 Album Chart as it falls from No. 39 to No. 55 in its 3rd week on the chart peaking at No. 10. On the R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, the album is doing slightly better as it only falls three spots to No. 12 where it peaked at No. 2. On the Rap Album chart, it falls one spot from to No. 6 where it debuted at No. 1.

UPDATE: The 2010 Billboard Year End Charts were published this week and Nelly copped the No. 35 Song of the Year on the Hot 100 with "Just A Dream"

St. Louis born singer/producer Akon makes a re-entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 as, "Angel" re-enters that chart this week at No. 56 (its highest peak) in its 7th week. His featuring on other songs however have slid on this chart: "Kush" by Dr. Dre and Snoop falls from No. 34 to No. 58 in its 3rd week on that chart (its currently at No. 13 with a bullet on the Rap Singles Chart) and his duet with the late Michael Jackson falls from No. 50 (its peak) to No. 66. The song is having a better chart life on the Hip Hop/R&B charts as it moves up 11 spots from No. 44 to No. 33.

+++

St. Louis resident and veteran R&B singer Ron Isley debuted on the Billboard 200 Album and Hip-Hop/R&B charts with his first solo CD, "MR. I" at No. 50 and No. 11 respectively.
+++
Other ILLIMOians who have songs on the Billboard chart this week include St. Joseph, Mo native Eminem has two songs in the Top 40 of the Hot 100 with the former No. 1 Grammy nominated "Love the Way you Lie" with Rihanna at No. 37 and "No Love" with Lil Wayne returns to the Top 40 moving up two spots up to No. 39 (originally peaking at No. 23) in its 23rd week.; Chicago native rapper Twista with "Make A Movie" with 2011 Grammy nominee Chris Brown that moves up 5 sppots up to 91 in it 4th week on the Hot 100. It also lands in the Top 10 on the Hip-Hop/R&B moving four spots up to No. 9 in its 17th week on that chart (it also moves up a spot to No. 8 on the Rap Song Chart); Chicagoan singer/songwriter Jerimih is charting with rapper 50 Cent with "Down with Me" that moves up three spots up to No. 46 in its 8th week; and Chicagoan singer Donell Jones falls ten spots from its peak at No. 25 on the R&B/Hip Hop charts but its one of the longest running songs on this chart spending 27 weeks in the Top 40.

+++++

Chitown native and Internet sensation Antoine Dodson’s sister, Kelly, made newz this week (Go figure). According to MediaTakeout, the sister, who moved to LOS ANGELES with her famous brother, is seeing R&B singer Bobby Valentino. According to their sources, snitch, she was his "personal guest" in Los Angeles on an outing last weekend.

Hmm, we think this could be a bit bogus. We think this coupling was something conjured up by Bobby V’s PR team. I mean, when do you really hear anything in the press about Bobby V? Then all of a sudden—BOOM, he hanging with the Dodsons?

IN ILLI-MO REALITY:

Chicago resident Calvin Tran is still on The Fashion Show by pre-emption. The show, which airs Tuesdays on Bravo, took a break this week and WEEK FIVE’s show will air next week.

THE BIG STL STORY IS:

In related newz, Sam Bradford's accomplishments helped make
The St. Louis Rams stand at a .500 average with a record of 6 and 6 after winning against the Arizona Cardinals 19-6 last Sunday ending their eight-game losing streak to Arizona.

The lone touchdown came from receiver Steven Jackson and its remaining points came from kicker Josh Brown who tied his career best with four field goals and the game ended with the Rams well within range for another one. Thewin kept The Rams in a first-place tie with Seattle in the NFC West. The Rams have one more road game, at New Orleans (Dec. 12), before returning home against Kansas City on Dec. 19. The St. Louis Cardinals signed first baseman and outfielder slugger Lance Berkman last weekend. The former Houston Astrosmen signed to an $8 million, one-year contract with St. Louis.

Now the question was where manager Tony LaRussa was going to position him. Last season, Cardinal left fielder Matt Holliday reportedly told LaRussa that he would be willing to move from left field to right field if The Cardinal club copped a guy suitable in his place. When interveiwed about the switch on 101 ESPN radio Monday, LaRussa was keeping Holliday as a leftie.

Interesting that no talk about Berkman playing some of “Pujols” territory--first base. Yet Holliday was willing to change his position, who was the No 2 superstar of the team. .

In related newz, The Cards also picked up short stop Ryan Theriot for a one-year contract.

Veteran Harlem Globetrotter “The Clown Prince” Meadowlark Lemon, was in St. Louis last week attending various events including a local signing of his new book, "Trust Your Next SHOT: A Guide to a Life of Joy," at Barnes & Noble in Chesterfeild and the Albert Pujols Family Foundation Christmas Party on Saturday night at Chase Park Plaza. On that nite is the spoken word event Raw Suger which will then turn to Liquid Assets’ debut of Black Hollywood Red Carpet event. It was reported to OUTTOWN last month that Branscomb, who manages the building where Club Amnesia is now housed, was vying to get a nite set for the older crowd since Lure Night Club closed its doors in October.

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ????????????????????????????????????????

Why did those persons who were responsible for the Wiki Leaks leak out info in the first place? Why are the Dems pissed off at Obama’s bill to give the wealthy extended tax cuts? Why are folk trippin off of Oprah’s exposing her cleavage during her honor at Kennedy Center Honors? Why do we still believe Kanye may be the baby daddy of Kim Kardashian’s baby? Why was the Atkinson’s foreclosed mansion in Lake St. Louis so hard to sell? Why are kids getting high on nutmeg? Why do we care about Bristol Palin? Why did Chrisette Michelle blast hip hop? And Why did Rick Ross ban her from performing with him on the hit, ”Aston Martin Music?” Why isn’t new Saturday Night Live cast member Jay Pharoah not the breakout star this season? Why don’t St Louis drivers go when immediately when the light turns green? Why is the late singer Jim Morrison getting a pardon 30 years after his death? Why was Wesley Snipes on Larry King? And why was he on the Tom Joyner Show referring to himself fin third person? Why did Diddy grind on Robert Deniro while he was in drag on Saturday Night Live ?And why did he kiss DeNiro on the cheek during the curtain call?

EVENTZ THIS WEEK:

SIUE Theater & Dance Presents: "Miss Julie: THRU DEC 12

7:30pm and 9:30pm

Come see August Strindberg's masterful, naturalistic tragedy "Miss Julie".

Directed by Jason Cannon "Miss Julie", a tale of sordid romance between and unmarried aristocrat and her downstairs servant. Strindberg saw the characters as 'living in a period of transition more feverishly hysterical,' and so he drew them as 'vacillating, disintegrated, a blend of old and new. My characters are conglomerations of past and present stages of civilization.'"

For mature audiences only.
