OUT 843 ILLMO BITZ

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THURSDAY--TIME TO GET TOWNED!

This Friday, will be the 1st year anniversary of the King of Pop’s death.

Congratulations to the 2010 MR COUTURE WINNER, RYAN WENICK!

+++++++

As we continue celebrating Black Music Month with the artistry of unsung African American singers and musicians from the ILLMO area, we highlight blues singer, Shirley Brown.

Born in west Memphis, Ark and raised in East St. Louis, Shirley Brown (born is an
American soul singer, best known for her million-selling single "Woman to Woman" which was nominated for a Grammy Award for R&B Song of the Year in 1975.

Early experience singing gospel gave her a powerful but expressive voice likened to Aretha Franklin.[citation needed] She worked with Albert King and bandleader Oliver Sain, before signing with Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee.

Her 1974 hit, "Woman to Woman" spent two weeks at #1 in the Billboard R&B chart and climbed to #22 in the Billboard Hot 100. It sold over one million copies by December 1974, and was awarded a gold disc.[1] It was to prove to be Stax's final major hit record, (the song was later covered by Barbara Mandrell in 1978 and became a top-five country hit). It was such a massive hit that an answer record was recorded by Barbara Mason in 1975 called, “From his Woman to You” which was also big pop and R&B hit.

A successful debut album, Woman to Woman was released by Stax on their Truth label, but by 1975, the company was struggling financially and also facing litigation. A follow-up single, "It Ain't No Fun" was only a moderate success, and Stax closed soon afterwards.

Her signing to Arista Records in 1977 resulted in the album Shirley Brown, produced by the former Stax owner Jim Stewart and writer-producer Bettye Crutcher, who provided most of the songs. These included "Blessed Is The Woman" which reached #14 R&B (#102 pop).

Brown continued to record for several labels since then, including Fantasy, on the re-formed Stax label, and Sound Town. She has been with the Mississippi based blues and soul label, Malaco Records since the late 1980s. She remains a popular live performer, mainly in southern states of the US, without having found the recording success of her earlier years.

THIS WEEK in the ILLMO, the big STORIES are Chi-town related. The Biggest one is:

The Blago trial continues. Nothing riveting. Just the prosecutors played wire taps of Blago cutting deals for Obama’s Senate Seat.

OTHER BIG STORIES are:

Speaking of court, former rap mogul "Suge" Knight sued Chitown hip-hop star Kanye West last Friday over a shooting incident inside a Miami Beach club in 2005.

Knight claimed the Shore Club's owners didn't provide enough security at the party where an unknown gunman shot Knight in the leg. West hosted the 2005 before the MTV Video Music Awards.

In court papers, West and the Shore Club ownership have denied Knight's claims of negligence(aka NO CONTEST)

Knight said in his lawsuit, now being handled in Miami federal court, that West and the Shore Club should have realized the party could produce a "dangerous environment" because of a widely known history of sometimes violent feuding among rap figures.

He's seeking more than $1 million in damages in his lawsuit, but he would have to share the money with a bankruptcy trustee and the Internal Revenue Service if he prevails due to his filing bankruptcy in 2006 and paying off his debts. .

Knight reportedly wanted a face off with West and his counsel could settle.
West was a no show for the confab.

No one has been arrested in the August 2005 shooting. The shooting reportedly shattered Knight's femur and reportedly left him with $200,000 in medical bills.

Hmmm, is it us or is Knight reaching? Why is he suing West? We are sure West was paid by the club to throwing his party at the Miami club and had nothing to do with the planning of the party including security. It wasn’t like security want there AT ALL. Knight does have a case with the club not searching people thoroughly for weapons, but West should not be part of the blame. And why four years later after the fact? Thats a bit suspicious as well especially now that the former rap mogul of Death Row claimed bankruptcy in 2006 a year after the incident.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++
And speaking of West, he will perform on the BET Music Awards June 27 and is nominated for video "Run This Town" with Rihanna and Jay Z.

Chicago talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey is among 30 celebrities who will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (and much much much overdue we think). The others include Oscar winning actress Penelope Cruz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Tina Fey, Black Eyed Peas frontman William, Melissa Etheridge, Los Tigres Del Norte and Rascal Flatts. The 30 made the cut of people whose stars will be unveiled on the famous boardwalk next year, reported Los Angeles Times online.

Jefferson, Mo. Native comic/actor Cedric the Entertainer was part of cable channel TBS’ show festival and its taping at Chi-town’s The Chicago Theatre. On June 18, he hosted his own night to promote his newest sitcom, “Cedric the Entertainer’s Urban circus”
Cable channel TBS will be bringing back the humor-centric programming block “TBS Presents a ‘Very Funny’ Festival: Just for Laughs,” five days worth of comedy co-sponsored by the television outlet.

With a show themed loosely (very loosely) around his life story, Cedric shared the stage with street performers, strong men, acrobats, contortionists and plenty of first-tier stand-ups, including stellar sets by JB Smoove, Sommore and Russell Peters.
Reportedly, Cedric did more hosting than performing, prompting “some grumbling in the seats.” Jerry Seinfeld made a cameo appearance -- to re-create the famously amusing Kings of Comedy sketch where the two drove a space shuttle together --
The comedy festival is aired June. 23.

Speaking of sitcoms, Chitown native and Emmy Award winning comic/actress/talk show host Sherri Shepherd's sitcom, "Sherri" also based on her life, was recently cancelled by Lifetime after one season. The network had budget cuts and saw her show to cost too much to produce (close to 3 milli). But fans dont fret, it has been talks with other networks to bring it back on next season. Meanwhile Shepherd and her "The View" colleague Elisabeth Hassleback have been taking turns moderating the show this week while its lead moderator Whoopi Goldberg is on vacation off to Atlanta filming Tyler Perry's" For Colored Girls." and Barbara Walters recovers from heart surgery.

Speaking of STL stars in Ch-town, STL raised rap mogul Nelly is currently on a “The Black Affair” party tour which coincides with the 10th anniversary of Nelly’s “Country Grammar” album. He, along with the St. Lunatics and protege Avery Storm just performed at the urban lunge The Shrine in Chi-town.The tour will conclude at Home nightclub July 23.
In related newz, Nelly’s sixth CD, “5.0” has been pushed back to Sept. 21.
Hmmm, here we go again with push backs. The same pushin got his last CD “Brass Knuckles” pushed off the charts.

In unrelated newz, regarding Home Nightclub, there has been a complaint filed against Home Nightclub involving profiling. At last Friday’s concert with rapper Lil Kim, it was reported by www.stlhiphop.com that several patrons who wore hip-hop based attire were literally escorted from the premises.
Here is a quote from its promoter, Rockhouse Entertainment VIA FACEBOOK:”CLUB HOME TREATED LIL KIM & SOME OF MY OTHER PERSONAL FRIENDS LIKE CRAP LAST NITE, SOMETHIN I WILL NOT SOON 4GET.”

We thought Home Nightclub took care of this problem after going through new management. What kind of people did security think were coming to Home to see Lil Kim, people in ball gowns and tuxes?

Two STL natives are getting face time on reality shows. First is comic Nikki Glaser (PICTURED) who was one of 11 comics advancing to the semifinals on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” seen last Monday during Part Two of the NYC auditions. The other is a STL resident (name unknown) who will be seen in an upcoming episode of TLC's "Cake Boss," when a cake client drives to New Jersey from STL to order an over-the-top cake for the grand opening of the River City Casino here in South County last Spring. The cake was built by Buddy Valastro. The episode will air June 28 on TLC.

Two superstar based concerts are coming to the Lou in August:

Live on the Levee is no more—in name that is. Last week, the free summer concert series under the Archgrounds got a name change: Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concerts, as reported by the Fair St. Louis Foundation.

In a press release, Fair St. Louis rep say, “We feel “Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concerts” more closely signifies our mission of celebrating the region and providing free entertainment in one of the most historic settings in the country.”

The free concert series kicks off July 9 near the base of the Arch on Leonor K. Sullivan Blvd., with rapper Common.

IN THE MIA FILE. Where is socilaite/promoter Rachel Westerfield?

BLIND BITZ—Which STL mover and shaker told an event assistant while she was taking pics, “Turn that big ol booty around so we can see it. Oh, don’t worry, my girlfriend got a big ole booty, too. “ (HINT. This mover and shaker is not a promoter but “guards” them. His name’s initials also are initials that make up a curse word.)

PRO-MO-CIAL-I-CIOUS. Which mover and shalers are gettin it in this week? Mocha Latte of Monopoly Promotions and Big Tah of 3 Way Promotions

Mocha Latte. The Queen of Promotions always gets it in every Friday at Karma as the host of Loose Cannons Friday Night Fixx, but starting this Saturday, she is moving her hype skills to another venue for the debut of Open Bar Saturdays at the Label (where its co-owner Craig Morris celebrate his b-day) on 7th and Broadway.

Big Tah. This swagged out promoter of the sexy Summer in the City calendar has been gettin his evenst started with the new Martini Mondays at the Loft. But Tah's brand has also been teaming up with various STL promoters for bus trips in town (with Hella Fly to Crown Winery) and to differnt cities (recently Memphis). This wekeend, his promotions group gearing up for a trip up to Chi-town for the Taste of Chicago.

WORDZ to the WHYZ????????????????????????????????????????????
Why did Katy Perry say Lady Gaga was a blasphemer? Why are Republicans trying to make the oil spill Obama’s fault? Why does the RFT have the wrong pic for jazz artist Lamar Harris in this week’s issue? Why didn’t Mariah Carey pay her 30,000 in vet bills? Why does it seem that the BET Awards committee were desperate for a big superstar attendance by giving Prince the Lifetime Achievement Award? And why didnt Prince get thid award like 10 years ago? Why is Home Nightclub still having racial problems goin on at the club? Why are Macy Gray’s CD’s constantly being overlooked? Why is Lil Kim beefin with Nick Minadj? Why wasn’t I invited to Yolanda Lankford’s house party recently? Why does it not seem as though Mike Jackson has been dead for a year?
