OUT 842--ILLIMO BITZ

HEY OUTTOWNERS, ITS THURSDAY--TIME TO GET TOWNED!

We celebrate three notable events days apart from each other. First, June 19th is Juneteenth to commemorate the freedom of African American from inservitude in the early 19th century, June 20 is Fathers Day and June 22 is the official first day of Summer.

++++++++++++
As we continue our celebration of Black Music Month by spotlighting ILLMOian artists, we highlight Chicago bred singer/songwriter Jerry Butler.

Born in Mississippi and raised in Chicago, Jerry Butler ( is an
American soul singer and songwriter. He is also noted as being the original lead singer of the R&B vocal group, The Impressions, as well as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

In the mid 1950s, he performed in a church choir with Curtis Mayfield. As a teenager, Butler sang in a gospel quartet called Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers, along with Mayfield. Mayfield, a guitar player, became the lone instrumentalist for the six-member Roosters group, which later became The Impressions.

Butler was dubbed the "Iceman" by WDAS Philadelphia disc jockey, Georgie Woods, while performing in a Philadelphia theater He co-wrote, with Otis Redding, the song "I've Been Loving You Too Long" in 1965. Butler’s solo career had a string of hits, including the Top 10 "He Will Break Your Heart", the million selling[1] "Only the Strong Survive," "Ain't Understanding Mellow" (with Brenda Lee Eager), "Hey, Western Union Man", and "Never Give You Up."

Butler released two successful albums, The Ice Man Cometh (1968) and Ice On Ice (1970). The Ice Man Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. He collaborated on many of his successful recordings with the Philadelphia-based songwriting team, Gamble and Huff. With Motown, in 1976 and 1977, Butler produced and co-produced (with Paul David Wilson) two albums: 1.) “Suite For The Single Girl” and 2.) “It All Comes Out In My Song.”
Tony Orlando and Dawn revived "He Will Break Your Heart" in 1975, with a new title, "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)," and it was more successful than Butler's original, going to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.[2]

Butler continues to perform while serving as a Cook County Board Commissioner since the 1980s.

In recent years, he has served as host of PBS TV music specials such as Doo Wop 50 and 51, Rock Rhythm and Doo Wop, and Soul Spectacular: 40 years of R&B, among others. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.

In 1991, Butler was inducted, along with the other original members of the Impressions (Curtis Mayfield, Sam Gooden, Fred Cash, and Arthur and Richard Brooks) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[2]

THE BIG A&E NEWS STORIES THIS WEEK ARE:

Two Chicagoians in the politcial field made with ties news this week. First, Presdient Barack Obama More than 32 million Americans watched U.S.
President Barack Obama address the nation on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill on Tuesday -- a 33 percent drop in audience size for his first State of the Union speech in January.

Figures from TV tracker Nielsen on Wednesday showed that 11 network and cable channels carried Obama's national address live from the Oval office, drawing an overall audience of 32.05 million people.

In comparison, just over 48 million Americans watched Obama's State of the Union speech on television in January, while 40.7 million tuned in to hear him announce his Afghanistan strategy in December 2009.

The other is former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. It wa sruled this week that Blago, will still be able to speak his mind, at least for now. The prosecution's attempt to slap a muzzle on the former Illinois governor and his attorneys was not approved by federal judge James Zagel. Instead, Zagel says he wants the two sides to talk, and come to an agreement about what can and should be said about the trial. Prosecutors are worried about the jury being influenced by Blagojevich's attempts to evoke sympathy or paint a favorable picture of himself to the media. Blagojevich left the courthouse today without stopping at the microphones inside the building, but did say "I'll talk to you tomorrow" as he was getting in his car. The former governor also stopped to sign autographs and take pictures with admirers, who've waited daily outside the courthouse since the trial began. When posing for a photo with one person, instead of saying "cheese", Blagojevich said "say not guilty" as he smiled at the camera.

Blago is facing several counts of trying to sell teh former Sentaor's seat of Presidnet Barack Obama

Is it us, or does it seem as though Blago has a trump card waiting for teh prosecutors. He is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to cool , calm and collected on this trial.

OTHER CHITOWN NEWSMAKERS in the mix :

Gary Coleman's remains were cremated privately in Utah on Thursday, according to the lawyer for his estate.
The Diff'rent Strokes star specified in his 2005 will that he did not want to have a funeral service, and his body was cremated in accordance with his wishes at Lake Hills Memorial Mortuary in Salt Lake City on Thursday afternoon.
Robert L. Jeffs, a lawyer representing the late actor's estate, tells ETOnline.com, "The proceeding was conducted in accordance with Mr. Coleman's desires as expressed in his Will, that no funeral service, wake, or other ceremony (was held to) memorialise his passing."
Coleman's ashes will be securely stored away by Jeffs until a final decision is made on who will take control of the star's estate.
The attorney is overseeing Coleman's estate while his ex-wife Shannon Price battles Anna Gray, an old friend and business partner of the actor, for control.
Jeffs will remain in charge until the validity of the two women's claims are determined.
Gray recently revealed she is organising a private memorial for the tragic star to celebrate his life, along with his TV brother, actor Todd Bridges.

Earlier last week, An attorney for the former manager and friend of late actor Gary Coleman says he will bow out of the fight for Coleman's estate. Attorney Kent Alderman told The Associated Press that Dion Mial will no longer seek to be appointed the special administrator of Coleman's estate because a more recent will has surfaced.

Mial was named in Coleman's 1999 will and was informally appointed as the estate's special administrator. But that appointment was challenged by Coleman's ex-wife, Shannon Price.
On Friday, an attorney for Coleman's former girlfriend Anna Gray filed documents with the court saying she was named in a 2005 will.

Even in death, ones life is not at peace.

Chitiown native modelactress Jenny McCarthy is set to follow in the footsteps of
talk show queen OPRAH WINFREY after signing a deal to develop her own TV series with the media mogul.
The Playboy model-turned-actress has landed a development deal with Winfrey's Harpo Productions.
Harpo executives have not elaborated on the content of MCCarthy's series, but they insist it won't be in a similar format to the TV star's current U.S.
chat show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which will go off the air next year (11).
Executives have yet to confirm if MCCarthy's series will launch on Winfrey's new TV network, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
A Harpo spokeswoman tells the New York Post, "We do not have anyone taking over for Oprah. We do have a development deal with Jenny MCCarthy. We are exploring possibilities across a number of platforms."

Uh, the only person we see who would take over Oprah's Show is God Himself and we know thats not happening!!!

Chitown native and Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter R Kelly penned the new song “Sign of a Victory,” the official anthem of the World Cup Soccer Championships in South Africa. he recorded it with the Soweto Spiritual Singers . Kelly performed the song last Friday as part of the World Cup opening ceremonies. Kelly says he wrote “Sign of a Victory” in two days because “I was just so inspired” by the World Cup.

Bentin, Illinois native (wqhich is near Carbondale, Ill) comic Tommy Johnagin was one of nine comics who advanced in the semifinals during the New York Auditions on Last Comic Standing this Monday.

St. Louis born Poet/Author Dr. Maya Angelou recently turned 82, and she is coming out with a new cookbook called Great Food All Day Long.

The big stories from the STL were sports related. The first one was Mizzou will stay in the Big 12. From a report compiled by Fox 2 St. Louis' wesbite, University of Missouri Columbia held a news conference Tuesday .While the financials of the agreement are not officially known and won't be for a while. The financial disparities remain as Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M will still get bigger pieces of the pie. Reports indicate Missouri's television money could double under the new arrangement. Part of the reason, the fact that two fewer teams in the league mean a smaller pie to share.

Officials said they were never contacted by the Big Ten Conference to join that league, and that Big 12 was always number one in their mind. There is no indication that the Big 12 plans to go to 12 schools by recruiting two to replace Nebraska and Colorado. who left the conference.

Lets face it. Its better to be a little fish in a big pond than a big fish in a small pond. And we are sure that Mizzou knew where their bread was getting buttered and that was with the Big 12 (especially know that is was revealed that Mizzou was never considered for the Big 10 from the get go) . Why break something that doesnt need to be fixed?

AND THE OTHER WAS:
