OUT 836--ILLI MO BITZ

HELLO OUTTOWNERS!

ITS THURSDAY

TIME TO GET TOWNED!
First off, we must say Happy Belated B-day to the late ILLIMOian musician Miles Davis who’s b-day was May 26. He would have been 84 years old had he lived. The Alton, Illinois-born and East St. Louis, Illinois bred trumpeter died in 1991

June is Black Music Month and all of June we will celebrate the music of notable African Americans, but more specifically, music artists born/raised in the ILLIMO area who are more unsung.

This week we highlight the artistry of R&B singer David Peaston.

Born in St. Louis, David Peaston is an American R&B/gospel singer who in 1990 won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist. He is mostly known for the singles, "Two Wrongs (Don't Make it Right)" and "Can I?", the latter of which was originally recorded by Eddie Kendricks.

In the late 1980s, Peaston, a former schoolteacher, won several competitions on the Showtime at the Apollo television show, winning over the audience with a powerful rendition of "God Bless the Child".

Peaston's mother, Martha Bass, was a member of The Clara Ward Singers gospel group. His older sister is R&B/soul singer Fontella Bass. In 1993, he recorded a gospel album with Fontella and Martha Bass entitled Promises: A Family Portrait Of Faith. He also sang on Lester Bowie's The One and Only - (1982) : ECM

In 2006, David Peaston returned to music with his album, Song Book: Songs of Soul & Inspiration. The album featured eight new tracks by Peaston, as well as several of his biggest hits.
Here is a video clip of Peaston's biggets hit, "Two Wrongs."

And NOW TO THE ILLI MO A&E NEWZ:

The big newz story this past week has been the untimely passing of comedic actor Gary
Coleman who passed last week at the age of 42 after going in a coma from a fall in his house in Utah cuasing a brain hemorrhage. He was on life support during his coma. The Zion, Illinois native star was widely known for his role as the bright and sassy Arnold Jackson in the successful 80s sitcom, “Different Strokes” which lasted for eight seasons. Plagued by a series of health problems all of his life (he was born with
congenital kidney disease which halted his growth at an early age, leading to a small stature and required daily kidney dialysis.[3]

Coleman’s life after “Strokes” was more of a an asterisk of his previous success only receiving bit parts in sitcoms (“Martin”) and even going on reality TV (“Surreal Life”) and making headlines for suing his parents for stealing his money and his aggressive and violent behavior.

But Coleman will be remembered for his comedic timing and chubby cheeked, “Whatchu talking bout Willis” catchphrase. We will miss you!

Chicago talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey is seeking a talk host for her upcoming OWN cable channel, and the best part is it could be YOU.‘Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star’ is a competition where online visitors vote on 3-minute audition videos uploaded by participants explaining their vision of the perfect talk show. The winner will be decided from among the top 5 contestants with the most online votes. In addition to entering online, participating Kohl’s department stores will soon be conducting special audition days for those who wish to pitch their vision in person.Show categories include everything from Cooking, Interior Design or Fashion and even a Wildcard category for those with a more revolutionary vision. So if you too have a unique vision to share and think you have what it takes to be the next Oprah, upload your video by June 26th, 2010 to Oprah.com/audition.

We can just imagine all of the kooks who will enter, but then again, William Hung became a star by being awful, so, go figure!!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Prospect , Illinois native and American Idol winner Lee DeWyze has two songs to debut on Billboard's Hot 100 this week. The highest charted is his cover of U2's "Beautiful Day" which debuts at No. 24. Idol made this song his official first single after winning the Idol competition last week. His second is his rendition of the song, "Hallelujah" which debuts at No. 44.
++++++++++++++++
In case you didnt know, Chicago native rapper/producer Kanye West prodcued Grammy Award noninated rapper/singer Drake's newst single, "Find Your Love" which is currently at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 6 on the Hot R&B and Hip Hop Singles Chart. Interesting that they would eventually work together such that Drake has been accused of biting Kanye's rap style when he debuted last year with "Best I Ever Had."

The big STL storiez this week were sports related.

First, St. Louis Cardinals baseball hitter coach Mark McGwire and his wife Stephanie McGwire are the new parents to triplet girls on Tuesday.

McGwire was reportedly on hand for the delivery and is not expected to return to coaching duties before Friday. Cards manager Tony La Russa received a text message from McGwire, who said the babies are "doing awesome" and that "Steph is great."

The McGwires already have two boys together since being married in 2002/ One of his sons from a previous marriage is Matt McGwire who was a bat boy with the Cards during the home run chase of 1998.

The names of the new McGwire sisters, they have yet to be determined. But all that’s needed is one more boy and they have their own version of the Brady Bunch. LOL

In other sports newz, it looks like St. Louis Rams safety O.J. Atogwe is free to sign with any NFL team. Atogwe, as of Tuesday has become an unrestricted free agent after failing to come to an agreement on a multiyear contract.
The Rams had a Tuesday deadline to sign Atogwe, who is coming off shoulder surgery that sidelined him the final four games last season. St. Louis declined to sign him to a one-year tender for $6.9 million , the player's salary for last year plus 10 per cent.
Speculation of his term with the Rams were dim since Atogwe did not participate in the
team's off-season conditioning program and has not attended organized activities.
It was reported that coach Steve Spagnuolo and Atogwe was at Rams Park last week and the two had a "good long conversation."
Spago said that they were still working at it and was hopeful and just “have to wait o see what happens in the next few days” but he also went on to say that the “team has to prepare as if he will not be back. :
Lets see here. First, the Rams refuse to pay him his pack retroactive pay, and his salary with a 10 percent increase. Second, he didn’t participate in any activities since the off season . And Third, he;s a free agent which means he can sign to any team and get the money that he wants.

I think Spago and the Rams better play on like Atogwe never existed.

On a sad note, St. Louis Police were searching for suspects Sunday night after three semi-pro football players are shot coming out of a nightclub near St. Louis University.
29-year-old Stacey Johnson was shot and killed in the incident, which occurred just before 3 a.m. Sunday.
Before the shooting witnesses say all three were enjoying an evening at a nearby nightclub called "The Loft". All three are members of the River City Eclipse football team, which plays its games at Mehlville High School.

Witnesses say one teammate was involved in an argument with a female over a piece of birthday cake. Johnson tried to defuse the situation, and was shot.
"Piece of birthday cake," Johnson's Mother, Virginia Smith, said shaking her head Sunday. "Trying to defuse the situation, that was Stacey. Stacey was a peacemaker. He wasn't a fighter. He always was trying to keep the peace with everybody."
Police say they are now on the lookout for two suspects wanted in the shooting.

Sad.

On a lighter note:

ILLIMOians are being repped on national TV shows.

We slept on this but he are awake on the fact that Affton, Mo native actor John Goodman co-stars in the new HBO series "Treme," who plays
Creighton Bernette a college professor and husband to an attorney living in New Orleans and along with the rest of the residents try and pick up their lives. The series picks up three months post Hurricane Katrina. A real life resident of New Orleans, Goodman’s character was recently added to the original pilot. The show, which only started airing in April, has already been picked up for a second season, a first for a newbie series on HBO.

AND

The other was the special tribute on the controversial animated series “The Boondocks”Sunday to late comics and TV stars the late Redd Foxx and Lawanda Page (who was born and lived in the St. Louis area respectively) in an episode called, Stinkmeaner 3: The Hateocracy. In the episode, was able to combine a 70's tribute to: Red Foxx, Lawanda Page, Jimmie Walker, Jim Kelly and Shaw Bros., with the arrival of Stinkmeaner's posse, the Hateocracy: three elderly cranks bearing a strong resemblance to Fred Sanford, J.J. Evans, and Aunt Esther, and gunning for Grandpa. After hospitalizing a typically race-sensitive Uncle Ruckus, they come gunning for the Freeman fam, displaying an astonishing degree of martial prowess for three old-ass niggas based on beloved TV characters from the '70s.

The Jill Scott and Maxwell tour at Scott Trade enter Friday was satisfying according to St. Louis Post Dispatch Pop Critic Kevin Johnson who said of Maxwell’s set, “by the end of the night, memories of his last show were stronger.” Johnson alluding to the Grammy Award winning crooner’s show earlier this year at the same venue. “But it was still a solid night regardless.” As far as Scott, her set pleased many of her fans but it seemed more of a greatest hits bill rather than a promotion of her delayed latest material The Light of the Sun", which, according to Johnson, “ made her fit on the tour not necessarily timely.” To see all of Johnson’s review go to

And lastly, in case if you were wondering about the latest on the postponement of Soul U’s 2010 Poetry Awards .on Saturday, one of its producers Soul U’s DJ 76 Kid posted this note on his Facebook Page:

Due to venue issues and last minute changes beyond our control, the 2010 Poetry Awards (on June 5th) has been postponed. We had a secondary venue in place; however, that venue would NOT have allowed us to give the same type of show that we wanted so we would rather POSTPONE than put together a HALF *** show. After all, this is the first of it's kind and we DEFinitley wanted everything to be perfect. Trust me, it was not an easy decision as we have NEVER had to push a show like this back....! At any rate, the new Show will be in September. Sorry for the LONG DELAY, but fortunately, yet unfortunately, that is the next open slot we have in our schedules. Rest Assure the Poetry Awards will happen. Dates, Times, Venue to be posted shortly. As far as voting, NOTHING has changed and everthing remains in tact. Same nominee's, same performers at the show, same presenter's, everything will flow accordingly. We just now will do it on a different date. Again, Sorry for the late notice, but we were wrestling with using this secondary venue just to make sure we had a show on June 5th, but decided against it.
If you have ANY questions, please don't hesitate to call Marlo at 314.827.5201 or email info@souluonline.com.

BLACK REP BITZ
The Me Nobody Knows, Music by Gary William Friedman, Lyrics by Will Holt THRU July 2, 2010 A compelling musical based on the anthologized writings of more than200 inner city youth collected by school teacher Stephen M.Joseph. At odds with a squalid setting and a cynical, materialistic view of the world, themes of hope and renewal emerged.
