ITS WEDNESDAY
TIME TO GET TOWNED!
THIS JUST END: STLTODAY just reported today that KSDK TV anchor/personality Cordell Whitlock did not renew his contract with the station and his last day on the channel will be next Tuesday. He was reported as saying that he wanted to work with his wife on her very lucrative and successful Internet business. Whitlock was with KSDK for nine years. Whitlock follows his colleague former KSDK anchor Rebecca Wu, who left the station in June l to take a job with the FBI. Whitlock is the god son to the late news personality Ed Bradley. Good luck to Cordell!
AND NOW ONTO what was goin on in the Arts and ENT worlds in the ILLI and the MO.
On a national scale, award-winning director Taylor Hackford ("Ray") is setting his sights to direct the a biography of the late adopted St. Louis based playwright Tennessee Williams (PICTURED). The biopic will be entitled, “Tenn,” a drama about his formative years. Williams moved to St. Louis at the age of seven in 1918 where he later attended University City High School.[1] In the early 1930s Williams attended the University of Missouri. In the late 1930s, Williams transferred to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri for a year, and finally earned a degree from the University of Iowa in 1938. The film will chronicle his dysfunctional family life on how Williams' tumultuous upbringing -- complete with a scornful father, depression, conflicts about sexuality and watching his beloved sister institutionalized and lobotomized -- fueled the conflict in such plays as "The Glass Menagerie" and the Pulitzer Prize-winning "A Streetcar Named Desire." Robin Shushan has written the screenplay. Infinity Media's Michael Ohoven is financing development and will produce with Dan Halsted. Timing on the picture is unclear, as Hackford could take another job before "Tenn." Hmm, we wonder if any of the film will be filmed her in the STL? It would make sense with part of his life was raised in the area. And with George Clooney’s “Up in the Air” movie being filmed here earlier this year, it mos def looks likely.
These past few days have been bombarded by star entertainers performing on the STL stage. On Last Friday, Grammy Award winning rock band Coldplay performed before a strong crowd at Verizon Wireless Ampitheater in Earth City (reports was that his wife actress Gwynith Paltrow may have been backstage looking on with the security beefed up and some of the stage area closed off ), then on Saturday, the urban fans had to choose between R&B soulster Angie Stone (PICTURED)at the FREE Live on the Levee Concert at the Archgrounds or spending close to 75 dollars to see Jamie Foxx’s (PICTURED--photo by Erica M. Brooks)“Blame It” concert up close at the Chaifetz Arena. And from sources, reports and eyewitnessing, it looked like Angie may have won. According to Celebrate St. Louis (who produces Live on the Levee), more than 10,000 people showed up to check out Angie Stone’s concert (SEE OUT 655 for pics and coverage) as all of the Archgrounds was filled and the “mosh pit” area as well (not to mention it was FREE). But at Foxx’s concert at the Chaifetz whose capacity is just over 10,000 was not filled with people. From pictures we saw from a source, many of the seats in the upper circle were not filled. The floor area were the only area that made a dent. We also heard that Foxx did not do any comedy (as was advertised one the radio ads ), just singing (with some joking there and there in between songs). Plus, there were many sound problems, did his now parodying performance of Ray Charles (with glasses and all), a by-the-numbers tribute to Michael Jackson and another run of the mock trailer of he and comedian Martin Lawrence in “Skank Robbers” with Foxx as his Living Color character Ugly Wanda and Lawrence as Shenene from the 90s sitcom “Martin.” (both seen on the 2009 BET Awards) We also heard the actual “comedian” that nite was his opening act Speedy who mostly joined on the crowd with insulting barbs. Oh well. I guess you can blame it on the a-a-a-a-tmosphere. LOL
Additionally, the pop studs Jonas Brothers were at ScottTrade Center this past Tuesday.
In other concerts, according to its website, Grammy Award winning singer Kelly Clarkson is slated to be at the Family Arena Oct. 31 with opening acts The Veronicas and Parachute are also on the tour. Ticket info from reports had not yet been released as of this blogging.
In other concert newz, for those diehard Bow Wow fans who was waiting to camp outside the Pageant doors for tickets to see the diminutive rapper/actor August 22 can put your lawn chairs back in the garage cuz the show has been cancelled. What is really going on? This is the second go round that Bow Wow cancelled out. Just this spring, he was slated to perform (along with R&B heartthrob Mario and rapper Young Berg) at the Family Arena for a Graduation concert but that was also cancelled. Well, at least he came through Rapper/actor Bow wow came through in March to the now defunct Lush Nightclub to celebrate his 22nd b-day. (SEE http://www.maatspear.blogspot.com/ OUT 572 FOR PICS) and to promote his then just released CD, “New Jack City” II.” that didn’t sell or fair well on the charts. Hmm, maybe that was the reason for the cancellation.

STL rap superstar/mogul partied it up in Miami all last week at various venues including hosting a part for Rosenhaus Sports Official at Grass Restaurant and on last Friday, Nelly hosted “Unsensored” at King of Diamonds Gentleman’s Club where we heard from a source had 100s of female video vixens and exotic dancers up in there getting all “tipdrill’ with it. We also heard there were many NFL ballas up in therre makin it rain up in the club too. We didn’t get much on what Nelly was doing, but we are sure he wasn’t in the corner looking at the walls. LOL.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In unrelated Nelly newz, his Prez (of his record label DERRTY ENT) Ali is sporting a new boo these days. It was speculated in reports that Ali had a “new wife and a new life” after his announcement of such on a radio ad earlier this month to celebrate his b0day at Skybox. Well, from a source, Ali has divorced his wife, Lillian and now has a new lady in his wife (we didn’t get a name) and he has a new baby girl.

The Queen is Sommore and the Four Jokers are Don “D.C.” Curry, , Michael Colyar and George Willborn St. Louis-native Joe Torry (and speaking of Torry, what ever happened to that case that female comic Vanessa Fraction was contemplating to file on allegations that Torry assaulted her while on a comedy tour in Japan earlier this year?)
Next month, the Hart-Rock Comedy Tour touches down in St. Louis with "Star Power" super star comedians Kevin Hart and Tony Rock who is embarking on the revolutionary funny "Hart-Rock Comedy Tour," kicking off Wednesday, August 19th at the all new Ambassador Theater in St. Louis, Missouri. OUTTOWN got word that former ST. Louis American fashion editor Keith Underwood was in town in the Lou last weekend to attend a wedding for his godson.
Lastly, we would like to give our sympathies to the friends and families to the untimely death of best selling author E Lynn Harris who died after an illness last Thursday at the age of 54 while on a book tour for his latest book, ”Basketball Jones” at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
We had the pleasure to first meet Harris when he came to St. Louis in 1991 when he was promoting his book, “Invisible Life” at the defunct Sunshine Inn Restaurant on Euclid. We recall him telling the crowd before reading excerpts , “Don’t put me in a box” referring to people typecasting him as a gay writer.
Another instance meeting was in 2002 when we went to New York for a Black Arts Conference in Harlem where he was among about five scheduled panelists at the panel discussions and he came there about an hour late and just walked up to the panel table as though he was bright and early. LOL
The last meeting of Harris was in 2004 when he came to the Schlafly Library for a book signing for his book What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted – A Memoir and him saying that he was proud to be one who help bring in the Black Gay Literary Arts popularity. We also remember him saying for people not to take flash pictures of him for it distracts his reading (he also wore black shades to deflect the bright lights in the room).
Overall, Harris was definitely a pioneer in the black literary arts. He, like James Baldwin, was openly gay. But besides from that, he was a talented writer. His books were definitely a page turner and he will be greatly missed.
This week on OUTTOWN SHOW, we will talk to author/journalist Terrence Porter about his career and new book, “Pride of Park Avenue” the show will air this Thursday, July 30 at 5 p.m. CST at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/maatology Just hit ON AIR and you are on!

IN THE MIA FILE—Where is STL comedian McGriff?
MIA FOUND—Former STL socialite Mark Wilson. He currently lives in Detroit.
BLIND PICZ. Who’s well pedicured feet are these with the shiney gray pumps that were seen at Mick Woods Summer party at Exo last Saturday?
BLIND BITZ. Which “in hiding” mover and shaker made a rare appearance at the relaunching of the monthly neo-soul spot Urban Saturday? (Hint. This person used to hold a popular weekly poetry series at his venue in the late 1990s/early 200s on the South Side)
BLIND BITZ: AT SUMMER REIGN . For the next few weeks, we will be giving you some juice from sources at last weekend’s Summer Reign event held at the Ozarks. Here is one for ya: Which male attendee at the BBQ was wearing sagging bikini shorts showing damn near half his arse? (HINT. This attendee is a popular socialite in the STL area who helps put on a weekly networking party before the weekend starts and his first name initial is the same as his last name initial).
STL-ICIOUS—Who’s’ hot this week in the STL? COCO SOUL and Mo Tre/comedian Dee Lee (tie).
Coco Soul. A multi STL-LCIOUS mover and shaker, this lovely STL based neo-soul singer—who is still getting raves from her high energy performance as an opener to Angie Stone at Live on the Levee last Saturday-- will grace the stage as host of the monthly music showcase Cafe Soul (that she is also co-creator of)at the Loft on Thursday nite (SEE ONGOING BITZ BELOW). This month, there will be a tribute to the late Michael Jackson (Let’s hope she does the same tribute she did on her Levee set!).
Mo Tre, This swagged out STL R&B trio has been touring up a storm here in the city. This past Sunday, they did double booking as an act at the family event early that day, then that evening, performed at Soul U’s @ SoulStage at STL's Finest Bar and Grill. Next month, they will do a regional show in Washington, Mo Sat Aug 15th @ Daiquiri's
Dee Lee. This comic/entrepreneur is about to re-open his popular House of Comedy venue(that has been renamed House of Comedy and Laughs Lounge) with a Grand Opening weekend this weekend at its new spot on 19th and Washington (SEE EVENT SPOTLIGHT BELOW).
WORDZ TO THE WHYz? Why do people have loud, long conversations on cellphones in public? Why was MJ’s doctor , Dr, Murray, living in the house with Jackson? Why is the Octomom getting a reality show? Why do we not care that newbie talk show host Wendy Williams is quitting radio? Why are anti-Obamities continue to believe the President wasn’t born in the United States? And why are they trippin off what Obama said about the policeman’s behavior at Harvard professor Henry Gates house when he was dead on right? And why did Obama had to apologize? At Live on the Levee, why did singer Angie Stone walk toward the stage in house slippers then removed them to put on a pair of heels before she walked up the steps to the stage? (ADDED: Why didn't Angie Stone do any songs from her stint as lead singer of the 90s group Vertical Hold?--She did a few bars of her song, "Funk You Up" during her early 1980s Sequence days so whatsup? ) Why didnt Jamie Foxx do any comedy at his concert at the Chaifetz? And why didn’t he perform at the more intimate Fox Theatre instead of the much larger Chaifetz? (Foxx at the Fox. LOL)

Streetballers is an award winning film from a filmmaker groomed by Sundance, and represented by top Hollywood representation. And yes.... Living in Saint Louis. It is a truly independent project with years of hard work, thoughtfulness, and skill behind its execution and style. The extremely diverse and talented team behind Streetballers is and will be the key to all future success. We are young artist driven by love, loyalty and friendship. Our goal is to inspire as individuals and our film is a tool to inspire the masses. We’re planning on opening the film in Saint Louis, MO on August 21st then expanding to various cities with a large urban/sports/college market (Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit). We have toured the U.S. and won numerous awards through festivals. We have turned down traditional distribution outlets and decided to self-distribute the film utilizing DCI compliant technology (Digital Projection).
In Saint Louis, we set two records. The highest rated film in the history of the Saint Louis International Film festival (beating Oscar winning and nominated films Juno, The Wrestler, and Slumdog Millionaire) and also the highest attendance record selling out the day before each screening. We are looking to release the film in Saint Louis on August 21st we would like to stagger the release in other cities to late September/early October and try to release in conjunction with the LeBron James documentary being released by Lions Gate.
Directed by St. Louis bred Matthew Scott Krentz, who also co-stars, Streetballers hit the festival circuit in June 2008, making its World Premiere at the Hollywood Black Film Festival. It has gone on to play in Saint Louis, Detroit, New York City, Nashville, North Carolina, and Philadelphia, winning multiple awards such as Best Dramatic Feature, an Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, and a Second Place Jury Award for Best Feature Film.
The Streetballers team has attached the popular indie shoe company, Greedy Genius http://www.greedygenius.com/ to create and distribute the official Streetballers shoe, at Finish Line stores this fall. We have also attached three platinum hip-hop artist to the soundtrack and will be shooting the music video this spring to help promote the film and the soundtrackJust over a month ago, Streetballers writer/director/producer/co-star Matthew Krentz signed with APA and Leverage Management. A portion of the proceeds from the soundtrack will be donated to several different charities.
As we mentioned above the team is comprised of loyal, hardworking and loving artists who are dedicated to reaching up, reaching out and giving back to the St.Louis community. We realize and embrace our roles as mentors. We except that esponsibility, while challenging ourselves to be the best rolemodels we can be,we stress education;because without education would not be where we are today. The Streetballers team has an extremely popular film, with a ton of street credit, and has developed a tremendous theatrical strategy of releasing the film in theatres across the U.S. with the Streetballers producer/actors and director touring with the film.
