ILLI MO BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT

This week we feature Chicago reared, legendary gospel great, Mahalia Jackson.

Nicknamed "Halie", Jackson grew up in the Black Pearl section of the Carrollton neighborhood of Uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. At the age of sixteen, Jackson moved from the south to Chicago, Illinois, in the midst of the Great Migration. After her first Sunday church service, where she had given an impromptu performance of her favorite song, "Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet, Gabriel", she was invited to join the Greater Salem Baptist Church Choir. She began touring the city's churches and surrounding areas with the Johnson Gospel Singers, one of the earliest professional gospel groups.[6] In 1929 Jackson met the composer Thomas A. Dorsey, known as the Father of Gospel Music. He gave her musical advice, and in the mid-1930s they began a fourteen-year association of touring, with Jackson singing Dorsey's songs in church programs and at conventions. His "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" became her signature song.[7]

In 1947 she signed up with the Apollo label, and in 1948 recorded the William Herbert Brewster song "Move On Up A Little Higher", a recording so popular that stores could not stock enough copies of it to meet demand, selling an astonishing eight million copies.[9] (The song was later honored with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998).[10] The success of this record rocketed Jackson to fame in the U.S. and soon after inEurope. During this time she toured as a concert artist, appearing more frequently in concert halls and less often in churches. As a consequences of this change in her venues, her arrangements expanded from piano and organ to orchestral accompaniments.

In 1950 she became the first gospel singer to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall when Joe Bostic produced the “Negro Gospel and Religious Music Festival". She started touring Europe in 1952 and was hailed by critics as the "world's greatest gospel singer".

Jackson had many notable accomplishments during this period, including her performance of many songs in the 1958 film, St. Louis Blues, and singing "Trouble of the World" in 1959's Imitation of Life; rIn 1961 she sang at U.S. President John F. Kennedy's inauguration.

On the March on Washington in 1963, she sang in front of 250,000 people "How I Got Over" and "I've Been 'Buked, and I've Been Scorned". Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his famous "I Have a Dream" speech there. She also sang "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" at his funeral after he was assassinated in 1968.

er last album was What The World Needs Now (1969). She ended her career in 1971 with a concert in Germany, and when she returned, made one of her final television appearances on The Flip Wilson Show. Jackson devoted much of her time and energy to helping others. She established the Mahalia Jackson Scholarship Foundation for young people who wanted to attend college. For her efforts in helping international understanding, she received the Silver Dove Award. Chicago remained her home until the end. Mahalia Jackson died in Chicago on January 27, 1972 of heart failure and diabetes complications at the age of 60.

THE BIG STORY THIS WEEK IS:

The surprise wins of St.Joseph, Mo native rapper Eminem at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards Sunday. While everyone expected it to be Eminem's night with 10 nominations, he only received two, Rap Album for “Recovery” and Rap Solo for “Not Afraid.” He was outdone by country act Lady Antebellum, who took home five Grammys including Record of the Year.

"This is crazy," a serious Eminem said during his acceptance speech. "Thank you to the fans — what up, Detroit? Stand up!" he shouted, following a list of thank yous that included Dr. Dre, Interscope Records' head Jimmy Iovine and others.

It was expected that Em would take home the Album of the year prize ,which he has been nominated for two other times, but he was dethroned by Arcade Fire’s “Suburbs.”

The highlight was when Em took the stage to perform with Rihanna and his mentor Dr Dre on “Love the Way you Lie” and “I Need a Doctor” respectively.

Nevertheless, Eminem has been forced to deny rumors that he was upset by only winning two of the 10 Grammy Awards that he was nominated for at last weekend's ceremony.

It had been reported that a source had claimed that the rapper had been angry because he didn't win the top gongs like 'Record of the Year' and the most coveted prize, 'Album of the Year', and that he vowed not to perform at the future ceremonies, reportsNew York Post.

But Eminem has claimed that this story is untrue and that he was honored to perform at the prestigious ceremony regardless of any Grammy wins.

One of the rapper's representatives told WENN.com: "This is untrue. He was happy to be there and perform with Dre. "Voting is voting, and there's only so much you can do about that."

Hmm, sounds like his PR team are in spin mode. For the most part, we pretty much know that Em isn’t a big fan of attending award shows. We are as surprised that he didn’t get the Album award just because he is the “veteran” of sorts and Grammy loves to select vets as well as those who make big comebacks. But, that seemed to have not been the case. Do we think Em was pissed and vowed not to attend or perform at future award shows? Its likely. It fits his stance for him to feel like that.

In related Grammy newz, other ILLIMOians were awarded Grammies. Chicago native and jazz legend Herbie Hancock continued where he left off last year with Grammy wins as he won two of the three awards he was up for this year. He won Best Pop Collaboration for “Imagine” with, Pink, India.Arie, Seal, Konono No 1 and Oumou Sangare and Best improvised jazz solo for , "A Change is Gonna Come" both sings from his CD "The Imagine Project"

Also, Chicago native singer .Mavis Staples, won her first ever Grammy Award for Best Americana album for “You Are Not Alone,” her acclaimed collaboration with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. “This Grammy took a long time coming,” Staples said as she accepted the award, overcome with emotion and receiving lengthy, loud applause. “You haven’t seen the last with me. God is not through with me yet.”

A few other artists who wouldn’t have their Chicago residency contested also got some gold off-camera. Perennial honoree Buddy Guy snatched the contemporary blues album gramophone for “Living Proof,” and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra took two of its four nominations.

TIED FOR THE TOP STORY:

St. Louis natives poet/educator Maya Angelou and Cardinals veteran Stan Musial received their National Medal of Freedom Awards from President Barack Obama at the White in a ceremony Feb 15 .

Obama praised Angelou for rising above an abusive childhood to inspire others with her words, saying her voice has "spoken to millions, including my mother, which is why my sister is named Maya."

He quoted Angelou, saying, "History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with ourage, need not be lived again," and bent down to kiss her cheek as he presented her with the medal.

Musial, 90, wore his familiar Cardinals-red sports coat during the ceremony shown on St. Louis television and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch website. He beamed as the president placed the medal around his neck.

(Musial) is a gentleman you would want your kids to emulate," President Obama said. The Hall of Famer beamed as Obama placed the medal around his neck.

The award is the highest honor presented to a civilian in the United States by the president. The Presidential Medal of Freedom recognizes those who have made an "especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors." The award was first given by President Harry S. Truman in 1945 to honor civilian service, and was revived in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy. Other honorees are Holocaust survivor and Scottsdale resident Gerda Weissmann Klein, President George H.W. Bush, artist Jasper Johns, optometrist Tom Little, who was murdered by the Taliban while he was on a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, German

In unrelated Angelou newz, Over the course of February, Maya Angelou's Black History Month Special will be broadcast in cities across the nation. Her first-ever radio public program features special guests Chris Rock, Cornell West, Common and Lee Daniels. It is a great American patchwork, a quilt woven of parables, historical anecdotes, autobiography, song, and poetry.

The women of "The View," including Chicago native Sherri Shepherd, flew to Chicago Friday to visit talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey and were caught on-camera with no makeup, curlers in their hair, and even opened their purses on live TV. "I stole some of the pens from the green room," Elizabeth Hasselbeck confessed to Winfrey. Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Shepherd invaded Harpo Productions. In a video on the Oprah.com website, Shepherd made it clear that for her, Chicago is all about food. Gary’s Popcorn, Gibson’s prime rib and any kind of pork. Whoopi is a little worried about the amount of snow Chicago got recently, which someone tells her is about 14 inches. Whoopi then says how much she wishes she had 14 inches.

In related newz, Discovery Communications is pumping another $50 million into a joint venture for Oprah's new cable channel, bringing its total investment to $239 million, less than two months after OWN launched to much fanfare.
The additional investment, on top of the initial $189 million, means the channel, which was expected to turn a modest profit in its first year, will barely break even on an operating basis. In the fourth quarter alone, Discovery spent $40 million to $50 million on OWN.

Nearly three years in the making, OWN: The Oprah Network debuted on Jan. 1, taking over the slot occupied by the Discovery Health Channel. After a big debut that averaged 583,000 viewers in primetime the first week, OWN has seen its ratings fall below those of the channel it replaced.

Just one year after his secret wedding, Chicago native and Oscar nominated actor Terrence Howard is getting divorced. Howard's wife, Michelle, filed a divorce petition with a Los Angeles court on Jan. 27, the same day they separated, according to documents obtained by Radar.

In her petition, Michelle said she's splitting from the former star of "Law & Order:
Los Angeles" due to "irreconcilable differences." The couple wed Jan. 20, 2010 but the 41-year-old actor didn't announce it until the Cannes Film Festival that May.

Michelle noted in her petition that "there are community and quasi-community assets" that they have yet to divide, though she wants "miscellaneous jewelry and other effects" to be declared separate property. She is also seeking attorneys' fees.

This was, technically, Howard's third marriage. He married and divorced Lori McCommas, the mother of his three children, before remarrying her in 2005 and splitting again shortly after.

From sources, the reason for the split was of Howard’s demand that his wife cleans herself properly with baby wipes instead of bathroom tissue. Howard has also been on record for domestic disturbances with his previous wife as well so its likely some sorts that perhaps this was the case here as well.

With New York Fashion Week 2011 underway, Chicago reared rap superstar Kanye West made his first Fashion Week appearance during the first night of festivities. He was spotted at GQ and CFDA's event for the Best New Menswear Designers in America Fall 2011 Collections show. Accompanied by the likes of Aziz Ansari, Kid Cudi, and Jessica Alba, Kanye wore a black leather jacket, Air Jordan 6 shoes, and Cartier “Vitesse” sunglasses (PICTURED).

In unrelated Ye newz, Jay-Z and Kanye West reportedly took over the whole floor of a top hotel to record tracks for their forthcoming album.

This week the rap superstars turned the luxury suite at Mercer Hotel into a personal recording studio to work on their collaboration, Watch The Throne.

A source told the New York Post's Page Six column, 'They took over at least one whole floor and moved in their equipment, which may have annoyed some of the guests.'

Their album is set for release later this year.

Comedian and Tonight Show host Jay Leno cracked a joke recently during his monologue about The Missouri Statehouse Senate bill that would eliminate child labor laws. Leno said at the conclusion of his monologue on "The Tonight Show.""Well, yeah, I mean, why should the 10-year-olds in China be getting all the good factory jobs?"

The bill would legalize employment for children under the age of 14, end inspections of facilities employing children, and remove restrictions on the number of hours a child may work.

Our question is why is this bill even drafted? Theres a reason why theres laws against child labor. Can someone say The Coogan Act?

THE BIG STL STORY IS:

St. Louis resident and Cardinals vet Stan Musial was honored Tuesday at a ceremony at the White House (SEE BITZ ABOVE) Musial, 90, is so regarded in St. Louis that the ceremony was shown on local TV and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch website. Cardinals star Albert Pujols even delayed his contract extension deadline, so it wouldn't detract from Musial.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) congratulated Baseball Hall of Famer Stan "The Man" Musial for being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama earlier today. Musial, widely recognized as one of the greatest baseball players in history, dedicated 22 years to the game of baseball, served in the Navy during World War II and has dedicated the rest of his life to public service and the St. Louis community.

"As a young kid in East St. Louis my most prized possession was my first baseball glove: a Stan Musial Rawlings Special. I rubbed that leather glove with Gloveoleum until I was the only one who could still see his name burned in the leather. I know if I would dig deep in my closet I could still find that Musial glove," said Durbin. "It is rare in history to find such a public person without a detractor. On the field and off, Stan Musial was always a gentleman, always a champion."

TIED FOR THE BIG STL STORY:

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols’s Wednesday deadline for the organization to comply to his contract demands expired leading to questions regarding whether Pujols will leave the team after the 2011 season to become a free agent

According to stltoday.com, Despite what the club described as a “substantial, long-term offer” first extended in early January and tweaked several times since, the Cardinals and Pujols never achieved traction on a deal that could have allowed the franchise to secure its signature player for the balance of a Hall of Fame career.

The package’s total value at more than $200 million spread across a nine- or 10-year base (Pujols is asking for $300 million in 10 years). Once rejected, the deal reportedly took several other forms that involved shifting years and salary and apparently even an equity stake in the team. “We are greatly disappointed in this outcome of negotiations that we’ve had over the last number of months,” said Bill DeWitt, one of the owners of the Cardinals, said to open a press conference Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium.

DeWitt recognized Pujols as “a great Cardinal ... an iconic player” before noting that the organization made “every effort” to extend his contract beyond the upcoming season.

Pujols, who signed an eight-year, $111 million deal in February 2004, asked for $300 million for 10 years which would be the biggest contract ever in professional baseball.

Interestingly enough, the Cards’ skipper/manager Tony Larussa chimed in on the contract negtations while arriving to Jupiter, Fla to begin Spring Training. He reportedly said, "I know what he's going through with the union and to some extent his representatives because his representatives are getting beat up by the union," La Russa told a large group of reporters before a workout at Roger Dean Stadium. "Set the bar, set the bar. You've got to deal with it. It's not the way it should be."

La Russa's comments reportedly drew a strong rebuttal from Major League Baseball Players Association that described La Russa as "completely wrong" and insisted that neither he nor anyone else in his office had discussed Pujols' contract with his agent, Dan Lozano.

Before Tuesday, the Cardinals had refused to guarantee more than seven years to a player who will turn 32 before playing his first game under its term, but they may offer some sort of modification before the deadline.

Pujols is expected to arrive to Jupiter, Fla on Thursday.

Hmm, interesting on many levels. One, if the Cards had a salary cap based on the age of a player, then the negotiations with 32 year old Pujols was going to be moot from the start. Adding the modifications clause to their policy is where the loophole came in and Pujols reps took advantage of that. One caller on LTRS AM thought of a solution that the Cards take some of the millions they are earmarking for the Ballpark Village and use that money for Pujols. If you take what they are worth (Forbes reported that the Cards is worth $488 million), their payroll is $111 million (according to Forbes) and to add an extra $200 million to offest Pujols demands would put them in the red (as we dont mean the team colors). Now, the question is, will this overshadow the Cards during their training? You bet it will be. And talk about a media frenzy! We think it will be more cameras in Florida covering training than when Mark McGwire was hired as the team’s batting coach. In the long run, the fans will have a sour taste in their mouths in regards to the assumptions on Pujols not taking the offer. We will see how they react to Pujols whether he get what he demanded or not come opening season in April.

Meanwhile, as the negotiations between Pujols and the Cardinals organizations were going along, its star left fielder Matt Holliday went on record to say that he would take a salary cut if needed to sign Pujols. According to MLB.com Holliday said, “I deferred $2 million a year for the whole contract and I would be willing, if they came to me and said, “Hey, this is what it’s going to take to get Albert done, would you do it again or do more?” Scott [Boras] probably wouldn’t like me to stay that, but if that’s what it took, I would be willing to do that.”

So $12 million he is willing to defer which is about $96 million less of extra $100 million Pujols demands in his $300 million request but hey, we think Holliday is definitely getting the award for the nice guy in all of this.

In other Cards newz, recent "re-signee" Jim Edmonds chances to play with the team have been delayed after Edmonds didnt pass the physical drills last week to train with teh team.
Edmonds who
signed a minor-league deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Feb. 4, is still having problems with a left foot injury that took place when he was with thw Reds last season. He had surgery on the foot in the offseason.
UPDATE: Because of his injury, Jim Edmonds has officially retired.

The toxicology report on St. Louis model Adrianne Martin was disclosed last week and the St. Louis County Prosecuting Office said Martin's body contained a deadly mix of cocaine and a potent painkiller, but there was no evidence of wrongdoing. They said she had voluntarily taken the cocaine and the painkiller, oxycodone, within five or six hours of death. Martin was the girlfriend of Anhueser Busch III.

Busch did not cooperate in the investigation. Police and the prosecutor did not say where the cocaine came from and have no evidence of how and when the drugs were obtained. Busch attorney Art Margulis said, "There really never has been a basis for a criminal action." The decision, he said, was "logical and reasonable."

The body was found December 19 at the Busch's exclusive family estate in Huntleigh, a suburb of St. Louis.

Hmm, all we can say is its good to have money and pay an attorney for your innocence. The toxicology report also showed that Martin's nose was eaten up in the insides from cocaine use. We are not saying that Busch is guilty of any wrongdoing but who knows what occurred during the hours after her death and Busch's phone call to 911.

BLACK REP BITZ

Ruined

By Lynn Nottage

THRU - March 6,

Directed by Ron Himes

Winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Ruined transports us to a small mining town in the midst of civil war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo. Two young women, ripped away from their families and violated by the competing factions, find themselves in the service of Mama Nadi at her brothel after being sold by a travelling merchant. Set within the brothel, the play explores each woman’s efforts to survive the constant threat of war and cope with their misfortunes as African women in difficult times.

The show will take place at Grandel Square Theatre in Grandel Square in St. Louis
