BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPOTLIGHT

This week’s artist we are featuring is poet/writer Langston Hughes

James Mercer Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was an American novelist, playwright, short story writer, and columnist. He was one of the earliest innovators of the new literary art form jazz poetry. Hughes is best-known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that "Harlem was in vogue".

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Mo. the second child of school teacher Carrie (Caroline) Mercer Langston and her husband James Nathaniel Hughes (1871–1934). Both parents were mixed race, and Langston Hughes was of African American, European American and Native American descent. He grew up in a series of Midwestern small towns. While in grammar school in Lincoln, Ill. Hughes was elected class poet.

Hughes enrolled in Lincoln University in Pennsylvania earning a bachelor's degree from Lincoln University in 1929

First published in The Crisis in 1921, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", which became Hughes' signature poem, was collected in his first book of poetry The Weary Blues (1926).[30] Hughes' life and work were enormously influential during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, alongside those of his contemporaries, Zora Neale Hurston Claude McKay, Countee Cullen to name a few . Except for McKay, they worked together also to create the short-lived magazine Fire!! Devoted to Younger Negro Artists.

Hughes was unashamedly black at a time when blackness was démodé. He stressed the theme of "black is beautiful" as he explored the black human condition in a variety of depths.

In 1930, his first novel, Not Without Laughter, won the Harmon Gold Medal for literature

In 1943, Hughes began publishing stories about a character he called "Jesse B. Semple often referred to and spelled "Simple", the everyday black man in Harlem who offered musings on topical issues of the day. Hughes seldom responded to requests to teach at colleges. In 1947, Hughes taught at Atlanta U. In 1949, he spent three months at University of Chicago Lab Schools as a visiting lecturer. He wrote novels, short stories, plays, poetry, operas, essays, works for children, and, two autobiographies, The Big Sea and I Wonder as I Wander, as well as translating several works of literature into English

On May 22, 1967, Hughes died from complications after abdominal surgery, related to cancer, at the age of 65. His ashes are interred beneath a floor medallion in the middle of the foyer leading to the auditorium named for him within the Arthur Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. The design on the floor covering his cremated remains is an African cosmogram titled Rivers. The title is taken from his poem, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers". Within the center of the cosmogram, above his ashes, is the line: "My soul has grown deep like the rivers".

THE BIG NEWZ STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Two ILLIMO stars had commercials and shows run during and after this year’s Super Bowl. First, St. Joseph, Mo. native and this years big Grammy nominee Eminem had two commercials run , one in claymation (more like a anti-commercial ad) for Lipton Brisk iced tea..............

AND

one being a two –minute tribute to his raised town, Detroit. According to a poll hosted by the MTV Newsroom Blog, Eminem's two-minute tribute to Detroit (which advertised the new Chrysler 200) was the clear winner. The commercial, which was the longest in Super Bowl history, picked up nearly 60 percent of the vote in the poll, handily beating the Volkswagen ad that featured a kid in a Darth Vader costume (that spot finished in second place with 27 percent of the vote). (Also, the Darth Vader spot finished just behind the top-rated winners in the USA Today poll.) With six percent of the vote, the third place position went to the Bridgestone ad that starred a helpful beaver. Eminem's other ad (for Lipton Brisk iced tea) came in fourth place with three percent and Chevrolet's "Lassie" spoof picked up two percent.

Eminem's appearance in the Chrysler ad — which was kept a secret up until its premiere on Sunday night — has inspired a great deal of chatter. Many people raised their eyebrows at the idea of Eminem as a mouthpiece for a corporation, but advertising experts lauded the rapper for his authenticity. Either way, the commercial was not one that anybody will soon forget and will go down as one of the signature moments of Super Bowl XLV. There are no plans for him to appear in upcoming spots, company officials said. However, Eminem's music and some elements from the initial commercial will continue to be featured

In unrelated newz, we will see how many of the 10 Grammys will pick up Sunday at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards (SEE BELOW our Grammy picks)

Also, Eminem will be among the headliners for Lollapalooza when it returns Aug. 5-7 to Chicago. Others Muse and Foo Fighters. Reliable industry sources confirmed the bookings Tuesday.

The other was Doloth, Ill native and Emmy Award winning actress Jane Lynch and some of her cast members from the show Glee was in that retro-styled Chevy commercial made to look like an episode of the show "The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle" that aired right after the Superbowl.

In the episode her character, Sue, grows disillusioned with cheerleading, and in an effort to recapture her love for it, she plans to fire Brittany from a cannon during their next competitive routine. She has the cheerleading Regionals competition moved to the same night as a football championship game, so her cheerleaders will be unavailable for the halftime show routine which is a mash-up of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with "Heads will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The episode had minimal commercials as it is sponsored by General Motors. It allowed for a slightly longer episode (about 4 minutes of extra footage, the actual episode being 49 minutes, instead of the usual 45 minutes)

The episodes title was originally known as 'The SuperBowl Episode' then changed to 'Thriller' but was finally was finalized as The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle by TV Guide

In other Superbowl newz involving ILLIOians

About 150 people attended the business casual Super Bowl party thrown by the Obamas in the East Wing of the White House. The guests included people from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to watch the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers battle it out. Pennsylvania's U.S. Senators, Democrat Bob Casey and Republican Pat Toomey, attended.Jennifer Lopez and her husband, Marc Anthony, were present, too.

The guests watched the game on five, 63-inch flat screen televisions and dined on a spread of sliders, hot wings, nacho chips and deep dish pizza.

When the Steelers were down early in the game, the president reportedly warned they couldn't be counted out. The team might make a comeback.

The Steelers did come back, but not enough to win the game.

The Obamas were gracious in hosting a party, Brenner said. They could have watched in the privacy of the White House.

"We were right in the middle of it all," Brenner said. "It really was an awesome experience."

We wonder if The Prez let his hair down during the party . Likely he was restrained.

Meanwhile his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama was on the Today Show this week during her press tour about the one-year anniversary of her "Let's Move" anti-obesity initiative, joining NBC "Today" show host Matt Lauer for an interview that bounced from Egypt to hair dye to Facebook.

Lauer then asked her to follow-up on her remarks yesterday that the president had kicked his decades-long smoking habit. "I was asked," Obama said, in defense of her having weighed in on the topic.

"Once he made the commitment to quit, I left him alone" she continued, calling it "a very personal thing."

Asked if the president might occasionally sneak into the Lincoln Bedroom for a smoke, the first lady said it wasn't possible. "I know he's not, you can tell."

Lauer, armed with two photographs of the president--one showing his hair graying, the other with it still looking dark-colored--next asked the first lady whether her husband dies his hair.

"No, he's pretty gray," Obama said, emphatically enough that Lauer seemed to agree that the difference in the photos must be due to lighting.

"I think that if he had known was he was going to be president he would have dyed his hair ten years ago," Obama went on. "... I wish that he would focus more on a different color suit, a new shirt. ... He cares very little about his appearance."

The first lady also revealed that her daughters do not have Facebook accounts (legally they are not old enough to use the social networking tool, although that rule is widely ignored by the pre-teen set).

FLOTUS mentioned "constraints" like the Secret Service, but acknowledged that even without the agents around, she would not likely allow Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9, on the site. "I'm not a big fan of young kids having Facebook," said Obama.

We wished Lauer wudda had the guts to ask the First Lady about comedienne Joan Rivers Blackie O comment. But we might’ve saw the Chicago in The First Lady if he wudda. LOL The whole "unhealthy" Superbowl food menu Lauer brought up we thought was blown out of proportion.

Speaking of the Obamas, they are featured on one of three covers Ebony Magazine celebrating black love. The other couples that will be featured are Jay-Z & Beyonce and Boris Kodjoe & Nicole Ari Parker.

Chicago based rap superstar and 2011 Grammy nominee Kanye West spent last weekend tweeting asking his fans to tweet their favorite lines from his latest album, retweeting those he deemed best.
West reportedly spent hours on Saturday retweeting his own lyrics from “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” as followers dashed them out in 140-characters. He started the night off by asking:

“Man wut yall think was the best line on MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY???”

West went on to tweet 9 of his own apparent favorite lines, including a few censored ones. He then began tweeting his followers’ responses, for the next several hours.

In related newz, West only communicates with people over email, according to teen heartthrob and 2011 Grammy nominee Justin Bieber.

West has remixed Bieber's track “Runaway Love,” with the new version available on the 16-year-old's upcoming release Never Say Never - The Remixes.

The Canadian star said he enjoyed working with Kanye, even though the star was sometimes difficult to get in touch with.

"[Kanye] reproduced the Runaway joint, and I'm really excited. It was amazing. He's such a cool guy, and he's just really laid back and just nice, and at the end of the day, he's just a nice person," Justin told MTV News.

"It's funny, because he doesn't even use a phone; he just sends e-mail. It's so crazy. I'm like, 'How can you not use a phone?'"

Hmm, we guess cell phones are no longer use to actually speak on it these days. LOL

Attorneys for former Illinois governor/reality show star Rod Blagojevich filed a pretrial motion Tuesday seeking what they claimed was missing evidence in the impeached Illinois governor's corruption trial, including records of a phone call between a Blagojevich aide and then White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

The motion claims the telephone conversation took place just a day before Blagojevich's December 2008 arrest on charges that include allegations he sought to sell or trade the appointment to President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat for personal gain. The motion says details of that conversation could bolster a defense contention that Emanuel, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing, was willing to help with a political deal in which Blagojevich would have named Illinois' attorney general to the seat.A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago, Kim Nerheim, declined any comment on the motion.

Blagojevich faces 23 charges at his April retrial, after jurors at his first trial last year agreed only on one of 24 counts and convicted him of lying to the FBI. Both prosecutors and defense attorneys have been ordered to file all pretrial motions by next week.

The media frenzy that took place last year on this case may be a bit stifled especially with the Dr Conrad Murray case being televised .

Former St. Louis Rams and current NFL sports commentator D’Marco Farr may have tainted his nice guy image when TMZ captured him in cursing out a Dallas valet. Farr reportedly was is in Texas to cover the Super Bowl for St. Louis radio station 101. 1. ESPN. Apparently ex-Super Bowl champ refused to pay a valet at a restaurant and then yelled at him when the parking attendant tried to get him to fork over some cash. Farr, who addressed the incident on the radio show, then said he just needed to "take a piss" and no longer wanted to argue 'cause it was "f**cking cold" outside.

Well, all righty then. Well he did have to pee. LOL

ST Louis Rams rookie QB Sam Bradford won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors on Saturday.

It was a clean sweep for the Big 12 as Bradford, the former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, joins former Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh who won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors with the Detroit Lions.

“It means a lot to me when you look at this award and see who has won it in the past,” said Bradford . “It reflects what we were able to do as a team this year.”

Sam Bradford joins stars like Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, Marshall Faulk and Emmitt Smith to win the award. Bradford finished the season with 3,512 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He ranked 12th in the league in passing yards.

TIED IS:

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday that they have signed 40 year old outfielder former St. Louis Cardinals player Jim Edmonds to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Edmonds spent eight seasons with the Cardinals from 2000-07, helping the team to reach the postseason six times, including trips to the 2004 and 2006 World Series. He ranks fourth in Cardinals history in home runs (241) and leads the franchise in postseason RBI (41) and games played (61).

After being traded to San Diego before the 2008 season, and playing 73 games for the Padres, he was later traded to the Chicago Cubs during the same season.

After sitting out the entire 2009 season, Edmonds spent last season with the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds. In 86 games, Edmonds hit 11 home runs with 23 RBI while compiling a .276 batting average.

Jim Edmonds surprised many around the game by signing with his former team. The 4 outfielder was limited down the stretch last season due to a left Achilles injury, but he decided to return for his 18th major league season after undergoing surgery to repair the tendon last month.

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said "Edmonds is not a lock yet. There is still some uncertainty about where he is physically. I’m not writing him in any way yet. It’s an opportunity.”

Edmonds will still have to pass a physical early next week. He could earn $1 million if he spends the entire season with the team.

According to reports, talks between St. Louis Cardinals top slugger Albert Pujols and the organization have yet to reach an agreement after a month of negotiations on a contract extension that would eliminate the possibility of the three-time NL MVP reaching free agency after the 2011 season, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

With a Feb. 15 deadline , the day of Spring Training, the sides reportedly remain in contact with each other. But according to multiple sources, a framework for a potential compromise has yet to take shape.

At Pujols' request, the Cardinals and the player's agent continue to hold to bar the media on any updates.

St. Lousi rap mogul Nelly made newz nationally and locally:

First, he and Kelly Rowland reunited recently on the sunny shores of Cancun, Mexico,(PIC was tweeted on Rowland's twitter page) to shoot the video for “Gone,” the latest single from the St. Louis rapper’s 5.0 album.Marc Klasfeld, who directed Nelly’s “Country Grammar” is at the helm.

The duet, produced by Jim Jonsin and Rico Love, marks the follow-up to the labelmates’ 2002 smash “Dilemma.” “It’s kinda like an extension of the story,” Nelly told Rap-Up.com, “and still playfully having fun with it like we did with the first one.”

In related Nelly newz, his cameo on the CW’s “90210” will air Feb. 14. In the episode, Nelly stops by the set of 90210 to shoot a music video at Shirazi Studios and character Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) shows up with her new reality show crew to try and score a guest appearance in the rapper’s video. Snoop is also in the episode.

Speaking of Nelly and Snoop, they assumed the roles of sports reporters at ESPN the Magazine‘s “NEXT” Party during Super Bowl weekend in Fort Worth, Texas, interviewing Reggie Bush, Rashard Mendenhall, Miss USA Rima Fakih, and model Chanel Iman, who was persuaded by Snoop to root for the Steelers.

In other Nelly TV newz, he, along with the St. Lunatics, was back again on the Jimmy Kimmel show this week performing “Just A Dream” once more.

“I wanna thank everybody for making this single four-and-a-half million,” the rapper said on stage. “Talk what you want, say what you want—Nelly’s still selling something.”

The song is still in the Top 40 of Billboard;s Hot 100 at No, 35 in its 25th week.

Last fall, the rapper was on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he performed his singles"Move That Body: and "Just a Dream"

Locally in the STL, Nelly’s tour company Flush Touring Co., filed a suit in Stone County Circuit Court Monday, the suit alleges Branson-area promoter Paul Dunn owes the St. Louis rapper $37,500 for his Aug. 21 show at the Mansion Theatre in Branson.

Both sides agreed the original pact was an oral agreement that called for Nelly to be paid $75,000. Dunn claimed that before the concert, he paid Nelly's associates $37,500 by check and $3,000 in cash.

Dunn, however, contended the original agreement was orally amended to $40,500 when the concert, which was first planned for the parking lot of the Grand Palace theater, had to be moved to the Mansion.

The venue change was necessary after Branson officials, citing concerns about security, noise and parking, refused to issue the necessary permits for the show.

Nelly's lawsuit claims that the $75,000 payment was promised for a concert at the Mansion.

Aside from the financial issue, both Dunn and a Nelly spokesman claim the other side is trying to damage the other's reputation.

In a telephone interview, Dunn claims the lawsuit is aimed at blunting Dunn's contention that Nelly's manager, Abby Cole, physically threatened him after the concert.

"Mr. Cole started asking me for $35,000 more before the concert was even finished," Dunn said, adding that Cole and two others followed him to a hotel and then to a restaurant, where they blocked his car with their vehicle.

"That's when Mr. Cole pulled this gangster scene right out of a Hollywood movie," Dunn said. "He kept telling me how I was going to get my (expletive) kicked. I wrote him a check just to get those guys out of there."

Payment on the check was stopped the next day, Dunn said. He said he filed a report about the alleged assault with Branson police on Aug. 23, the Monday after the concert.

A sergeant with the Branson Police Department could not verify Tuesday the filing of the report, because severe weather had kept clerical employees at home.

Cole declined to comment about any confrontation with Dunn and referred questions to Mike Chaffin, Nelly's business manager.

This is ugly. So the question at hand is, is Nelly due an extra 30,000 for a show that was postponed and moved based on the city’s ordinance and out of the control of promoter? Technically, it isn’t Nelly’s fault that the concert was moved if the oral agreement was for him to be paid 75,000. No written contract was signed on any conditions or possible changes as what just happened so we think the promoter is responsible in paying Nelly the extra money As far as the physical altercation that Dunn had with Nelly’s manager, well that needs to be proven if that was the case. It may have happened, but if there weren’t any witnesses or video to testify or can be used as evidence, then it is technically cant be proven. . All that can be proved is Dunn cancelling the check before it was to be cashed.

RIP-BITZ. LASTLY The St. Louis basketball community lost a tremendous individual on Friday with the passing of Lee Winfield. Winfield died on Friday, February 4th, on his 64th birthday. Known as "Coach Win," to his former players, Winfield was a great player, a wonderful coach and mentor, a great man and a treasured friend to all who knew and loved him. Most people remember Winfield as a valued assistant coach to both Rich Grawer at Saint Louis University and Norm Stewart at the University of Missouri during some very successful seasons during the 1980's and early 1990s.The visitation for Lee Winfield will be held on Friday at Austin Layne (7302 West Florissant)from 4-7 p.m. The funeral will be held on Saturday at Newstead Baptist Church (4370 N. Market St.) at 10 a.m.

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ???????????????????????????????????????

Why was J Lo and her husband Mark Anthony were the only non political people invited to Obama’s Super Bowl party at the White House? Why are people tripping off of nude pics of Rhianna she sexted? And why are there so many celebs gettin caught with nude or semi nude pics leaked online? Why didnt Kim Kardashian act liek she was scared to dance with Prince at his NYC concert? Why are so many potholes on Goodfellow ? Why are people complaining about the cold weather in St Louis and its winter? Why is Janet now fessin up that her brothers used to verbally abuse her about her weight? Why was Fantasia signed up to play Mahalia Jackson? And why did folk thought she was preggo? Why is there a debate on whether Halle Berry’s daughter is black? Why did it seem like Today show host Matt Lauer was badgering First Lady Michelle Obama about serving pizza and all the fixins at her husbands Super Bowl party? And why does Dr Dre keep postponing his long awaited followiup to his 1992 CD,. The Chronic?"

ON THE SUPERBOWL:

Why didn’t the Dallas Stadium have seats ready for those who had tickets to sit in seats? Why did people pay over 200 dollars just to stand in the parking lot at the stadium to watch the jumbo tron? Why were there so many ads from Doritos? Why are media folk calling Christina Aguelera’s botching of the National anthem “lyric malfunction?” Why are folk panning Black Eyed Peas performance of the Superbowl? Why did the Pepsi Redux commercial with dubbed Angry Black Female cause so much of a stir when she hit the white jogger by mistake? And why were most of the commercials trying too hard to outtop the Betty white Snickers commercial and failed?

BLACK REP BITZ

RuinedBy Lynn Nottage

THRU - March 6,

Directed by Ron Himes

Winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Ruined transports us to a small mining town in the midst of civil war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo. Two young women, ripped away from their families and violated by the competing factions, find themselves in the service of Mama Nadi at her brothel after being sold by a travelling merchant. Set within the brothel, the play explores each woman’s efforts to survive the constant threat of war and cope with their misfortunes as African women in difficult times.

The show will take place at Grandel Square Theatre in Grandel Square in St. Louis
