WOMEN HISTORY MONTH BITZ

This week we feature journalist Mary Paxton Keeley.

Keeley was born June 2, 1886, in Independence, Mo. She started her college career at Hollins College in Virginia, then after spending a summer at the University of Chicago, she realized her interest in journalism. There was no journalism school at Chicago, so she came to the University of Missouri where a school of journalism was scheduled to open.

In 1910, she was the first female graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism.

After graduation, she became the first female news reporter in
Kansas City, where she accepted a position with the Kansas City Post. However, after only 15 months on the job, Keeley had an acute appendicitis and had to leave her position.

After recuperating, she was ready to go back to work and looked to Walter Williams, founder of the university’s journalism school, for advice. He suggested she go back to school and get a degree in home economics as a specialty background for her journalism. She then spent several years working in rural areas of Missouri as a reporter, but after becoming sick again, she decided she would rather teach. In order to teach she needed a graduate degree so she went back to school once again and received her master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1928.

From 1929 to 1952, she was a professor of journalism and creative writing at
Christian College (now Columbia College) in Columbia. She was also active in the community and was a founding member of the Columbia Art League and Boone County Historical Society.

On
December 6, 1986, Mary Paxton Keeley passed away at the age of 100.

THE BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:

President Barack Obama was in Atlanta last Friday to attend fundraisers for his re-election campaign. Atlanta resident director/actor Tyler Perry hosted two fundraisers, one for the public at his movie studio in Southwest Atlanta (PICTURED) where where an enthusiastic crowd attended
Grammy winner and Atlanta native Cee Lo Green performed (that Obama did not attend) at the studio fundraiser.

Reporters were allowed to witness Obama's brief remarks to the crowd at Perry's sprawling 200,000-square-foot studio. Obama on Thursday launched a more aggressive phase of his re-election bid, slamming the Republicans running for his job during a speech in Maryland. In Atlanta, he wasn't quite as direct, but he still made his case for four more years.

"The recovery is accelerating, our economy is getting stronger," Obama said. "We’re moving in the right track. What we can’t do is go back to the same policies that got us into this mess in the first place."

Another fundraiser was a private event where he spoke to those in a more elite group, including Oprah Winfrey, at Mr. Perry’s 30,000-square-foot French provincial mansion along the Chattahoochee River. A third fundraiser had taken place at a businessman's Buckhead home.

Wow, talk about the two most powerful men in America—one in politics, the other in entertainment joining forces. We wouldn’t be surprised both men switched roles in the far future!

In unrelated news, The White House just released his 2008campaign biopic that is narrated by actor Tom Hanks..

FLOTUS Michelle Obama made her first appearance on the "Late Show With David Letterman" on Monday. And during a discussion about the importance of family, the first lady told Letterman about her father.

"My father had multiple sclerosis," she said. "I never knew him to be able to walk, but my dad worked so hard and he loved us so much, and I think from him I learned just absolute, complete unconditional love, the notion that kids really don't need anything but to know that their parents adore them."

She continued: "We had rules, we had boundaries, but there wasn't anything my dad wouldn't do for us, and, uh--don't make me cry. This isn't 'Oprah'! It's supposed to be 'Letterman.' What's up? Where are the laughs?"

"Did somebody tell you this was 'Oprah'?" Letterman joked. "Is that why you're here? Oh my, someone misled the first lady."

FLOTUS remained winkingly positive, saying, “[Barack] is always upbeat — particularly about Congress.” She also revealed that she occasionally “sneaks out” of the White House for covert trips to Target and PetCo. Of her “son,” Bo The Dog, she said he is “the smartest dog in the world… I’m thinking about getting him an agent.” She also discussed how her daughters, 13-year-old Malia and 10-year-old Sasha, are doing.

She was on the show to promote her Joining Forces initiative.

Can’t you see her with her own talk show? Hmm.

In unrelated FLOTUS newz, she attended a fundraiser for her husband’s campaign hosted by actor Robert DeNiro and his wife Monday at a reception in NYC. The fundraiser charged $25,000 to mingle with the first lady.

Controversy ensued when De Niro told a crowd of about 90 people that it was "too soon" for a white first lady.

"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?" De Niro asked, according to a pool report from the fundraiser.

The report said the crowd roared and someone yelled "No!" as De Niro asked, "Too soon, right?"

Republican candidate Newt Gingrich quickly went to the press demanding President Obama to apologize for DeNiro’s comments because it “divides the country through a racial divide.”

Gingrich said the president should be held accountable “when someone at his event says something as utterly and totally unacceptable. And I call on the president to apologize for him.”

The office of First Lady Michelle Obama issued a statement calling the statement “inappropriate,” but the Obama campaign is finding cover in an unlikely ally, staunch conservative Ann Coulter.

Coulter tweeted: ”Can we please stop the fake ‘offended’ routine? Pls explain what was allegedly offensive about DeNiro’s joke.”

Obama didn’t apologize, but his campaign didn’t stand by the actor’s sense of humor, either.

“We believe the joke was inappropriate,” said Mrs. Obama’s campaign press secretary, Olivia Alair. She declined further comment.

We don’t see what harm was done. Although the joke was bit off-color, pun intended, we are sure DeNiro wasn’t trying to be racist (Besides, he's married to a black woman so go figure!). We are just glad that President Obama didn’t fall into the GOP trap of apologizing.

St Louis native actor Jon Hamm called out reality shows and its main celeb, Kim Kardashian. NBC “Today” show host Matt Lauer asked the actor to clarify the earlier comments he made to Elle UK about Kardashian being a famous-for-being-famous “idiot,” which the reality starlet called “careless.”

“I don’t think it was careless. I think it was accurate,” he told Lauer. “It’s part of the culture that I certainly don’t identify with,” he said of the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star and her mentor Paris Hilton. “I don’t really understand the appeal of it other than in a sort of car crash sensibility, and it’s not something that I partake in or enjoy, but it is what it is and here we are.”

The hoopla began when Hamm was quoted in the British women’s mag saying, “Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated.”

He added, “Being a f-----g idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you’re rewarded significantly.”

Kardashian, tweeted “Calling someone who runs their own businesses, is a part of a successful TV show, produces, writes, designs and creates, ‘stupid,’ is, in my opinion, careless.”

Hamm back-pedaled a little later that day when E! News asked him about the comment.

“It’s surprising to me that it has become remotely a story,” he told the celebrity channel. “I don’t know Ms. Kardashian; I know her public persona. What I said was meant to be more on (the) pervasiveness of something in our culture, not personal, but she took offense to it, and that is her right.”

We think reality shows and the stars they are making is the same as when disco created one-hit disco stars and the backlash that ensued when the music became saturated and took reign as the most commercial entertainment. Kudos to Hamm for making a statement about the idiocracy that reality shows have caused.

Former Illinois governor and reality show star Rod Blagojevich settled into prison last Thursday. Now, he is Inmate No. 40892-424. With helicopters and TV news crews broadcasting his every move, Blago stepped out of a black SUV, to the Collagado mountains on the horizon, and just before noon walked into the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in suburban Denver.

Inside, there was a protocol: full-body strip search, hand over all personal belongings. That means the man with a taste for fine Oxxford-label suits traded in his clothing, save for his wedding ring, for khaki prison garb and boots.

Jurors convicted Blagojevich on 18 counts, including charges that he tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's old U.S. Senate seat.

Although he was sentenced in December, he was given more than three months to say goodbye to his wife, Patti, and their two daughters.

His youngest daughter – 8-year-old Anne – continually called on his cellphone, upset at his departure, he said. Blagojevich could be seen leaning against the vehicle, talking on the phone in the parking lot.

Blagojevich is the second ex-Illinois governor in a row sent to prison for corruption.

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey fired OWN talk show host Rosie O’Donnell and cancelled her talk show “Rosie” due to low ratings. Debuted in October, the shows last taped show will air March 30 at Harpo Studios in Chicago. According to a source, Rosie’s demeanor didn’t help.

She was a bully on the set, felt the writers couldn’t write, the producers couldn’t produce, the stage manager couldn’t manage and the director couldn’t direct. Staff members say it was the worst experience they’ve ever had.

Both parties put out nice statements about each other, but there is supposedly tension between the two. Rosie never wanted to be in Chicago and wanted the show taped in New York.

O’Donnell was just one of 30 people who got the pink slip laying off one-fifth of its workers and restructuring its operations in New York and Los Angeles.

The decision to let 30 employees go is a "tough" one, but the economics of a start-up cable network didn't fit with OWN's cost structure, Winfrey said in a statement.

"As CEO, I have a responsibility to chart the course for long-term success for the network. To wholly achieve that long-term success, this was a necessary next step," Winfrey said.

The responsibilities of the laid-off workers will be distributed among people with the network and its venture partners, Discovery Communications and Winfrey's Harpo Studios, according to OWN.

Guess Gayle got out just in time!

Last Friday, St. Louis native comedian and activist Dick Gregory and actor George Clooney was arrested while protesting outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington, DC. Others arrested included Clooney's father, journalist Nick Clooney and Martin Luther King III. They were protesting Omar al-Bashir's sponsored mass murder and rape of indigenous African people of Sudan. On Thursday, to met with the President Obama over conditions in Sudan.

Chicago native comedian/talk show host Sherri Shepherd denied a report last week that she was secretly practicing with anyone on the show before landing the part. Shepherd, a co-host on ABC’s “The View,” kicked off last Thursday’s telecast with the denial, following a report on RadarOnline, which said she had been dancing with series regular Maksim Chmerkovskiy since December.

ABC didn’t reveal the casting until Feb. 28.

Shepherd began her statement by noting that she’s not partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, but rather his brother Val.

“We have never, I say never, we’ve never danced together,” Shepherd said, admitting she was nervous.

“I’ve never danced with Maks. I’ve never danced with Val,” she added.

But Shepherd said she loves dancing so much that she had taken classes at Maksim’s studio.

“This started long before I started negotiations with ‘Dancing With the Stars,’” she said.

RadarOnline, quoting an unnamed source, said Shepherd had been spotted at the SoHo Studio and that Maksim was there at the same time.

She reportedly was seen going in wearing workout gear and dance shoes."

“I saw them dancing together,” the source told RadarOnline.

Under the guidelines of the show, celebrity participants learn which professional they’re paired with on the day ABC makes its official casting announcement. Then the training begins.

Shepherd said she loved to dance, noting a video from her wedding that went viral and that she had met the “Dancing” pros socially through her work.

We think there was a spin in the truth. Its too much of a coincidence that her dancing partner is the same person that she met while doing dance lessons for her wedding. We are just saying.

Chicago native singer/producer R. Kelly is delivering more chapters of "Trapped in the Closet." The outrageous musical series started off as five videos for the R&B singer's dramatic cliffhanger songs in 2007. It quickly became a cult classic, and he added more chapters, put the accompanying videos on a DVD and also teamed up with IFC to premiere the series. It grew to 22 chapters.

For the next chapters, Kelly is teaming up with IFC again. He said in a statement Wednesday: "The Alien is back and It has brought friends along."

"When I first began experiencing the unknown journey of writing `Trapped in the Closet,' I knew after the first chapter that I had tapped into something that was not of this earth," he said.

Filming for the new chapters will begin in Chicago in the spring and be out by the fall.

Newly signed Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall had his first press conference this week since being traded by Miami Dolphins at Halas Hall, the building complex in Lake Forest, Illinois, that serves as the Chicago Bears' headquarters. There, Marshall thanked respective people, including Bears coach Lovie Smith, and his former team coach Tony Sparano of the Dolphins, former Dolphins teammates, his agent, his attorney, his wife and Marsha Linehan on his new signing and spoke on the allegations regarding him hitting a women in the face during a melee Sunday at a Manhattan nightclub two days before being signed with the Bears.

Marshall, who was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder last summer, said he could not say much about the alleged incident and that his attorney is taking care of matters and understood people’s concern given his checkered past and recent diagnosis.

Police said the woman was not taken to the hospital and Marshall has not been charged. The New York Post stated that Marshall, his wife and some friends were at Marquee when a brawl ensued, and Marshall punched the woman below her left eye, although he may have been attempting to hit the woman's friends.

This sounds like an accident and not intentional, but we are sure the woman will try and get a criminal charge on Marshall.

Chicago native talk show host Sherri Shepherd delivered a stellar Foxtrot last week with partner Val Chmerkovskiy on the premier of Dancing With The Stars . While Sherri was not the top performer (Jaleel White and Katherine Jenkins tied with 26 points), she tallied a decent score at 23. Also scoring 23 were Washington, Mo native actor Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya for their foxtrot in a romantic springtime routine.

The NFL came down — and came down hard — in the "Bountygate" scandal. Included in the stiff penalties handed down Wednesday by league commissioner Roger Goodell is an indefinite suspension for new Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

The suspension begins immediately and will include the entire 2012 season. After the season, Williams' status will be reviewed by Goodell.

According to the league, Goodell will pay close attention to the extent to which Williams cooperates with the NFL in any further proceedings. In addition, New Orleans head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for a year without pay. effective April 1.

New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis is suspended for the first eight games of the regular season. And Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt — a former interim head coach for the Rams in 2005 — is suspended for the first six games of the season.

As a team, the Saints were fined $500,000 and will forfeit their second-round draft picks in 2012 and 2013.

Williams oversaw the Saints' bounty program when he was the team's defensive coordinator from 2009-11. Under the program, players were offered cash bonuses for making big plays and also for making hits on opposing players that resulted in injuries.

Williams originally denied being over the bounty system.

Meanwhile, newly fired Rams coach Jeff Fisher held a press conference at Rams Park and stated that the St. Louis Rams will not name a defensive coordinator in 2012 following the Bountygate related suspension of defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, as reported by Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

I'm not going to name a defensive coordinator. Most likely it will be a collective effort. But we have a lot of things we have to sort out as you can imagine.

In addition to his statement above, Fisher also expressed confidence in his remaining defensive staff members and their collective ability to install and oversee the defense in Williams' absence.

He also stated that he had no recollection of Williams’ involvement in the bounty system.

This was inevitable that this was about to happen but our questions are, “Who snitched?” (Musta been someone in the mix with Williams who was the mole) and “How could Fisher not know what was going on and worked with Williams in the past?” (We think the NFL made him say that so his job was protected). But one thing we are certain, those players who were hurt by the Saints under Williams’ reign is about to flood the courts with liability suits against the NFL for sure.

St Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter returned to St. Louis on Tuesday to be examined by nerve specialists after experiencing renewed symptoms associated with a bulging cervical disc.

Carpenter, who threw live batting practice Sunday, experienced what the club has described as "weakness" in his neck, shoulder and upper arm Monday.

As recently as last weekend, the Cardinals hoped Carpenter would be available to make their opening-day start April 4 against the Miami Marlins. That responsibility now falls to Kyle Lohse.

With Chris Carpenter sidelined indefinitely, the Cardinals have tapped Kyle Lohse as their new Opening Day starter. He'll face the Marlins on April 4 in Miami, where the Redbirds will help christen new Marlins Park. Adam Wainwright, manager Mike Matheny announced on Wednesday, will start one game on the team's opening road trip to then be lined up to pitch the home opener on April 13 against The Cubs.

' According to stltoday, the area's St. Patrick's Day parades -- in Dogtown and downtown -- drew big crowds Saturday, with the Dogtown parade running up against a rainstorm that moved into the area.

Crowds lined Market Street early downtown, with some parade revelers getting there before sunrise to snag a good spot. Robert O’Loughlin was the honorary Parade Marshall. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley joined a Marine color guard in leading the parade.

In Dogtown, crowds were more than 10-people deep just after the parade kicked off, with people clad in green T-shirts, beads and socks sitting on shoulders to get a glimpse of the passing floats. For many people, maneuvering through the narrow neighborhood streets was a challenge, as cars and people slowly made their way through barricaded streets. In Dogtown, crowds were more than 10-people deep just after the parade kicked off, with people clad in green T-shirts, beads and socks sitting on shoulders to get a glimpse of the passing floats. Occupy Wall Street protesters brought their usual complaints and nonconformist attire to a parade in St. Louis this St. Patrick’s Day (PIC BY BLAZE). Protesters marched in the parade holding signs and chanting before stopping in the middle of the street for a mic check. Some in the crowd booed and heckled the protesters.

The Gateway Pundit reports that the St. Louis Police Department were seen “booting this offal off the street” after marching only a couple of blocks of the parade route.
