RIP BITZ

Last Saturday, St. Louisan Norris Stevenson died at the age of 72. He was a pioneer in Mizzou sports as he became the first African-American football player in 1957. He was picked in 1961 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, but spent the season on the team's reserve list. He went on to play for the Edmonton Eskimos and the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League.

WOMENS HISTORY MONTH BITZ

This week, we highlight Illinoisan native suffragist and journalist, Abigail Scott Duniway.

Abigail Scott Duniway (October 22, 1834 – October 11, 1915) was an American women's rights advocate, newspaper editor and writer, whose efforts were instrumental in gaining voting rights for women.

Duniway was born near Groveland, Illinois. Duniway's Captain Gray's Company; or, Crossing the Plains and Living in Oregon (1859), was the first novel to be commercially published in Oregon.[5] This and others that she wrote drew repeatedly on her experiences as a young woman on the Oregon Trail.[5]

In 1866, she moved to Albany, NY where she taught in a private school, then opened a millinery and notions shop. Angered by stories of injustice and mistreatment relayed to her by married patrons of her shop, she moved to Portland in 1871 to found The New Northwest, a weekly newspaper devoted to women's rights, including suffrage; that is, the right of women to vote and run for office. She published the first issue on May 5, 1871, and continued The New Northwest for 16 years.[2]

She wrote a booklet called My Musings after attending a convention of the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1872. Her last novel to tell the story was From the West to the West: Across the Plains to Oregon (1905).[5]

Duniway encountered personal setbacks such as poor health, money problems, and opposition from her brother Harvey W. Scott, who also edited a Portland paper, The Oregonian. She persisted despite political opposition in the form of local resistance, the consistent failure of women's suffrage referendums on state ballots, and divisions with Eastern suffrage organizations. She and her newspaper actively supported the Sole Trader Bill and the Married Women's Property Act which, when passed, gave Oregon women the right to own and control property.

Her persistence paid off in 1912 when Oregon became the seventh state in the U.S. to pass a women's suffrage amendment.[3] Governor Oswald West asked her to write and sign the equal suffrage proclamation.[4] She was the first woman to register to vote in Multnomah County.[4]

Her last publication was Path Breaking: An Autobiographical History of the Equal Suffrage Movement in Pacific Coast States, in 1914

THE BIG STORY THIS WEEK IS:

President Barack Obama Press held a press conference during Super Tuesday at the White House. The press conference reportedly came just hours before polls closed in 10 states deciding which Republican should face Mr. Obama in November.

At the conference, the president unveiled two housing initiatives to reduce refinancing fees for mortgage loans issued by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).

Political experts are saying that the press conference was strategically held on Super Tuesday in an effort to present the president’s policies and allow voters to compare and contrast them with those of the Republican presidential candidates.

.

The White House released a fact sheet outlining the president’s new housing initiatives. The fact sheet lists a 1-800 number for military service members so that they can contact the Justice Department if they feel that their home was wrongly foreclosed on by “Bank of America, J.P. Morgan Chase, Ally, Citi, or Wells Fargo.”

When asked what would he like to say to the Republican candidates during the voting he just said, “I wish them good luck.”

Looks like the POTUS is ready to pull out his trump card on his strategy to claim his re-election! We think we haven’t seen all that Mr Obama is about to relinquish in his campaign.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Cape Girardeau, Mo. native and controversial radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh made headlines recently when he called Georgetown University law student, Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a "prostitute” on his syndicated radio show after she said at a congressional hearing who testified in favor of President Obama's directive to insurers to pay for birth control. As a result, a plethora of protesters – particularly women – rallied against what they saw as outdated misogyny.

Also, over 30 advertisers who advertise on his show—including Sears, JCPenney, AOL, and Netflix--have pulled their support for Mr. Limbaugh's show. And, social media sites such as BoycottRush.org and Limbaugh boycott pages on Facebook and Reddit have provided readers with step-by-step instructions for how to vent their displeasure at advertisers.

Because of the hoopla, Limbaugh read a statement of apology on air but it yielded even more advertisers to pull out. Then, he went on a tirade on air blaming hip-hop for his verbal foible.

“Talk about a double standard,” Limbaugh said. “Rappers can say anything they want about women. It’s called art. And they win awards.”

Here we go again. Rush sounds like a kindergardner in some he-started-it-first BS. It also sounds like the same scenario when Whites feel that its OK to say the N-word because African Americans say it freely. So what does one do to take the blame off of oneself, you blame someone else who is either powerless or more victimized—in this case, African Americans. But it doesn’t cloud the real issue at hand: how women are seen in a man-run society (a powerless class that are seen by men as second class citizens (our Women History Month Bitz above is a great example of this) and this way of thought stems years before there were hop hop or rappers. Its part of America’s social fabric.

Rush is no fool. He knows what he is doing. He plays up topics that appeal to his audience: the right wing Obama haters. But our thing is, why now that the advertisers pull out? Rush has been saying outrageous things for years about anything and anybody that isn’t part of the ultra conservative Republican machine.

Women’s right to conceive is one of the hot button issues these days and we think Rush may not be able to recover from this one because the womens groups and big lobbyists in Washington DC to influence national policy. If anything, Rush may get a suspension, but when the fire is out and the smoke appears, we think Rush will be back doing on air.

In other Rush newz, he will be honored in his home state with a bronze bust in the Missouri Capitol. Limbaugh will be inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians, along with Dred Scott, an African American slave who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom in 1857, leading to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that slaves were "property."

Scott and Limbaugh were recently chosen for the honor by Missouri House Speaker Steven Tilley, a Republican who represents Perryville, just north of Limbaugh's birthplace of Cape Girardeau.

As speaker, Tilley has unilateral control over who is chosen for the honor. Tilley has faced criticism for his choice since the Fluke comments he made.

State Democrats are urging officials to refuse placement of the bronze bust in the capitol, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

In a letter addressed to the acting commissioner of administration, lawmakers wrote:

"While it is undisputed that Mr. Limbaugh is famous, fame alone has never been considered sufficient for induction. Mr. Limbaugh's greatest distinction during his controversial career has been his penchant for divisiveness."

Tilley, however, has indicated that he will not change his mind in choosing Limbaugh, pointing out that "current members of the hall often had detractors and were not always uncontroversial or universally loved and adored."

OUTTOWN SAYS

Hmm, this is the same argument that Adolph Hitler was a great man—great as in powerful, not in character. But what is even more disturbing is that Limbaugh is being honored along with Dred Scott, a man who Limbaugh would likely would have said during Scott’s days that he should not challenge the status quo of slavery. Besides, we don’t see anything wrong with Rush’s honor. It’s a Hall of Famous Missourians not Hall of GREAT Famous Missourians. We just think he shouldn’t be honored along with Dred Scott.

This week it was reported that TV mogul Oprah Winfrey landed an interview with Whitney Houston's daughter and other family members for a TV special that will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network March 11

"Oprah's Next Chapter" will feature an interview with 19-year-old Bobbi Kristina, Patricia Houston, who's the singer's sister-in-law and manager, as well as the singer's brother Gary..

In the interview, Bobbi Kristina shares personal memories of her mom and offer thoughts on how she wants her legendary mother to be remembered. The family will also address the rumors surrounding Houston’s death, and, Whitney’s ex-husband, Bobby Brown.

It was also reported that Bobbi Kristina did not seek money for the interview because she trusted Oprah and believed that she sincerely cared about her mother.

We are sure that Oprah was the right choice for the interview, but isn’t it a bit soon? At any rate, this episode we are sure will give Oprah’s fledgling OWN a big boost in ratings.

Grammy Award winning rap superstar and Chicago reared Kanye West was back on the runway this week as he debuted his women’s fall/winter ready to wear collection during a fashion show for Paris Fashion Week. 'Ye offered up what many criting acs described as a Givenchy-inspired look. There were leathers, backless motorcycle jackets, inventive knee-high boots, furs and go-karts.

From reports, critics say that his newest collection was better line than his fall collection that was showcased last October. The rapper/ producer/ overall told reporters there that he was unfairly judged during the first go-round.

"I got treated unfairly by the press last time. Why would I want to do this," Kanye said to a roomful of editors after deciding to cancel a pre-show collection preview.

In attendance were Diddy, Kim Kardashian, Shyne and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour

Here’s what a New York Times writer had to say about Ye’s show:

"This show started out OK, with a series of tough-looking black leather and suede outfits based off of a motorcycle jacket. And it ended with go-karts spinning around two tracks on either side of the runway, which made Anna Wintour smile. His leather skirts had a stiff half-ruffle pointing out at the hems. Karlie Kloss wore a leather jacket that, kind of interestingly, had no back, but then there was again a preponderance of questionable fur looks, including pants that were broadtail on the front, clingy fabric on the back."

Here is what a Wall Street Journal reporter wrote:

"First the bad news: This Kanye West collection was so Givenchy-esque that it's embarrassing that Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci was an expected guest. Kanye, whatever your legal arrangement, cribbing is cribbing. Ten points off for copying the smart guy sitting next to you. Next, the good news: this Kanye collection is a massive improvement. When I asked how he managed it, Mr. West dissembled and said he'd spent a lot of time in 'libraries.' "

AND OUTTOWN SAYS:

Well, there’s one thing you can say about Ye—he has the ego to pull off anything that he does and he is extremely creative. Ye is slowly becoming the Andy Warhol of hip-hop.

Emmy Award nominated actor and St. Louis native Jon Hamm made news recently when he was in New York last week. While filming an episode of his recurring role on the show, “30 Rock,” he made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” during host Lindsay Lohan’s monologue with the running gag that Lohan was not dependable to host the entire show and Hamm coming in as a substitute if needed (He also appeared in the Weekend Update segment playing the lost lover of Snooki played by with Bobby Moynihan). This week, he appeared on The Ellen Show where host Ellen DeGeneres asked him if he was really on SNL as a backup host in case Lindsay Lohan didn't show up in Lohan;s opening monologue or was it just a joke?

"No, it was a joke," Jon explained on Ellen's show . "Lindsay did a great job. I have a good relationship with all of the people over there and I happened to be in town and they were like, 'Would you do this thing. Could you come by?' Any chance I get to go to 30 Rock, I'm down. So, it was really fun."

THE BIG STL STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Newly hired St Louis Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has apologized for his role in a bounty program that rewarded players for injuring opponents while he was with the New Orleans Saints. Williams was reported as calling the bounty system “a terrible mistake.”

The NFL reported last week that between 22 and 27 defensive players were involved in the program administered by Williams, with the knowledge of coach Sean Payton. Williams said, “Instead of getting caught up in it, I should have stopped it. I take full responsibility for my role. I am truly sorry.”

Well, looks like coach Jeff Fisher has something to ponder about on whether he should keep Williams on board for he selected him to join him with the Rams. If anything, Williams should be suspended for his role in the bounty program. We will see how all this play out.

"There have been several real key moments in my career that I had some butterflies. This year when I pitch at Busch Stadium for the first time, there'll probably be some butterflies. We'll have to wait and see."

Wainwright threw around 30 pitches Sunday and said he approached it with the kind of intensity he usually reserves for game days during the regular season.
