THE BIG NEWZ STORY THIS WEEK IS:

Chicago’s talk show queen Oprah Winfrey taped two of the three final shows of her 25 year stint of her daytime talk show Tuesday at the United Center a few feet away from Harpo Studios where her show is taped. Close to 13,000 folk jammed inside the venue to watch the spectacle take place. From current headline celebrity Maria Shriver to Aretha Franklin to Tom Cruise, stars paid tribute to Winfrey during the taping dubbed "Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular”.

The following are the highlights from the two tapings:

Just before 7:30 p.m. in Chicago, Winfrey took to the stage to the tune of the Black Eyed Peas' hit song, "I Gotta Feeling." What followed was a star-studded extravaganza that electrified the audience.

Shriver said to Winfrey, "For more than 30 years you have bestowed upon me the most amazing friendship. You have shown love, support, wisdom, and most of all, the truth,.” Shriver paused for a moment after she uttered the phrase "the truth." Winfrey responded by squeezing Shriver's hand tight, and the audience erupted in applause.

"Mission: Impossible" star Tom Cruise walked out onto the stage

Winfrey was met on stage by actor Tom Hanks, who told her, "You are surrounded by nothing but love. Thank you for what The Oprah Winfrey Show has meant for our lives.

"'Now Oprah, we all know that you do not like surprises," Hanks said, to which Winfrey replied, "I'm taking it all in."

There was a big production number from R&B pop superstar Beyonce – she actually had to perform it twice because of technical problems the first time around -- and a performance by country music stars Rascal Flatts.

The second show's taping began with Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett, as emcees.

The first guest they introduced was Michael Jordan, who told Winfrey that she had "done wonders" for him.

"I know you have been a fan of basketball," he said, "but I have been a fan of yours for many, many years."

Next, Smith introduced Jamie Foxx, who sang Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" -- with lyrics altered for Winfrey.

When Wonder himself appeared on the stage behind a grand piano to take over the performance of the song, the crowd went wild.

Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz also paid a quick tribute to Winfrey.

The talk show queen helped launch their television careers.

Simon Cowell also spoke, and he introduced a very svelte Rosie O'Donnell, who performed a song and dance routine accompanied by tuxedo-clad men.

Winfrey was clearly touched by the tributes, at times appearing joyful, surprised and grateful.

Poet Maya Angelou's recitation of an original work -- a narrative of Winfrey's past -- accompanied by soft piano music from Alicia Keyes, may have been one of the most moving acknowledgements of the evening.

Winfrey listened intently, her eyes narrowed, brows knit and chin occasionally quivering.

Of Winfrey, Angelou said this "big-eyed fat girl from Mississippi decided to show the world how to look at itself… how to change itself ... ."

She concluded: "I can and I will and I shall be Oprah, Oprah, Oprah… ."

There were 13,000 boxes of Kleenex tissues in the center – one for each audience member, a spokeswoman for Winfrey's show said.

Stedman Graham, Winfrey's partner, may have prompted the use of many of those tissues when he paid his own personal tribute.

"I love you for making a difference in my life," he told Winfrey, adding: "It amazes me that I get to be around a woman who changes people's lives every day and still takes her lunch to work."

Aretha Franklin's appearance on stage seemed to have shocked Winfrey the most.

The music icon sang "Amazing Grace," following it up with a rousing gospel number that had the audience surging to its feet.

Oprah thanked everyone for taking her to a place she'd never been before, saying she would "have to watch the tape and process" what had happened.

"It feels like the rapture," she said.

The second taping ended with a performance from R&B star Usher, who sang "Oh, Happy Day" with help from Franklin.

The two shows taped Tuesday will air May 23 and 24.

Prior to the tapings, eager fans had started lining up outside the United Center early on Tuesday to catch a glimpse of arriving celebrities and witness the end of an era.

In the days before the taping, Winfrey's producers were promising "the biggest names in movies, music and television."

The United Center doors open to the public at 5:00 pm CST.

In the moments before the taping began, producers warmed up an already energized audience.

One audience member, a man from Winnepeg, Canada, went up on the stage and proposed to his girlfriend. She said yes, and the crowd cheered wildly.

Harpo Productions got more than 154,000 ticket requests for seats to Tuesday's event. Tickets were free and winners were determined by lottery.

The NBA Eastern Conference finals between the Bulls and the Miami Heat had to be shifted to make room for the taping

In St. Louis, NewsChannel5 is only one of a handful of stations invited to attend two of Oprah's final last shows.

People now are wondering what will be her actual final show joking that her last guest would be Jesus, but we think it will be a retrospect of sorts with guests who appeared on her very first national show in 1986. what do yawl think?

IN RELATED OPRAH NEWZ...SOMEWHAT

Shortly after the final buzzer sounded in Sunday's NBA playoff game between the Bulls and Miami Heat, about 1,000 workers were scheduled to begin transforming the United Center from a basketball arena into a makeshift talk-show studio for the taping of the final episodes of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday, workers were to take down the basketball hoops and install staging equipment, lighting equipment and video monitors until Winfrey begins taping "Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to Don Halcombe, a spokesman for Harpo Productions.

Eastern Conference Finals games between the Bulls and Heat were scheduled in a manner that does not conflict with Winfrey's taping schedule or with the necessary preparations.

The series is tied 1-1. The next games are

"Pam is just out of her first trimester but isn't really showing yet," Fischer said back in 2009. "The cool part about playing Pregnant Pam is that my real-life sister Emily is pregnant... I find out how she's feeling, what she's going through. It's the best resource ever!"

The actress has been married since last July

No word yet on how far along Fischer is in her pregnancy -- but people expects she is about four to five months in. So the question is, will her pregnancy be scripted in when she starts filming Season 8 of The Office in July?

THE BIG STL NEWZ STORY IS:

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LarUssa was back in the fold Monday in Philly for the Philles; series after missing six games with the Cardinals due to his right eye being infected by shingles. But LaRussa’s ears were now in pain after what Cincinnati broadcaster Marty Brennaman said with the Cardinals-Reds rivalry, referring to former Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter as “that whiner and excuse maker.”

The broadcast booth discussion turned to Dave Duncan, who was referred to as “that infantile pitching coach.”

Also , WLW, the radio station in Cinncinati ran this contest: “Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has shingles, so we want to give you a chance to win some Tony La Russa shingles of your own! The Reds and Cards clash this weekend at GABP and we're backin' our redlegs by giving you a shot to win Tony La Russa shingles courtesy of Ray St. Clair roofing.” Stay classy Cincinnati!)

As for the Cardinals, the broadcaster mocked acting Cardinals manager Joe Pettini for supposedly having said “every time (we) come in here, it’s always something with that team.”

In reality, Pettini was referring to past and current episodes between the teams when he said: "It's always something when you come in here."

This all stememd from Cincinnati's sweep of St. Louis over the weekend figured to provide the latest stir of the pot for the ever-hotter Reds-Cardinals rivalry.

Brennaman is known for popping off. At a speaking engagement at Marshall University earlier this year, according to the Charleston Daily Mail, he referred to La Russa as “Mr. Baseball.”

Why? “Because he acts like he invented the game,” Brennaman said.

In related newz, some of that Cards v Phillies rivalry was also seen when a shouting match ensued at the end of last Sundays game after Cards slugger Albert Pujols was hit by a Francisco Cordero fastball on his lead forearm. It looked painful Sunday as Pujols grasped his wrist and went to his knees in pain, but Pujols was able to carry on. As Pujols told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "It's going to take more than this to pull me down."

In related news, Pujols played third base during Tuesday nights game against the Phillies, his first start at third base since 2002. La Russa said before Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies that Pujols might make a handful of starts at third the rest of the season.

The Fabulous Fox Theatre was back in biz Tuesday for the bext few runs of the hit show Jersey Boys after of a three alarm fire that broke out in the wee hours of Sunday morning in the historic Fox Theatre. As a result, the Sunday and Monday shows of “Jersey” were cancelled. The blaze started in a mechanical room located on the fourth floor above the lobby. No one was injured and the fire department is still investigating the cause of the blaze. The majority of the damage was in the lobby--a few hundred thousand gallons of water blasting into the building discolored the mural on the ceiling of the lobby, and soot covered the carpet, chairs and stage. A giant tarp now covers the lobby ceiling to catch falling pieces of plaster. The main theatre only sustained smoke damage and all seats are useable.

BLACK REP BITZ

The Montford Pointe Marine

May 25 - June 26, 2011

by Samm-Art Williams/ Directed by Ron Himes
The day of July 10th, 1993 marks a special moment for Robert Charles Wilson. 50 years ago he enlisted to become a Marine at Montford Point. He proudly served his country in WWII at Iwo Jima and after exiting the service trained as a classical opera singer. But his only shortcoming in life was separating from his wife, Gwen, when she refused to chase his dream of becoming a famous singer. With their only son R.C. in town to celebrate the anniversary of his father’s enlistment, this day brings a wave of memories back to Robert, along with a few unexpected turns in this World Premiere theatre event.
