HEY OUTTOWERS!

IT’S THAT TIME!!

TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!

Have a Safe Fourtth of July Weekend!

In our last day celebrating Black Music Month, we spotlight a STL artist that received some national success. His name is Phil Perry.

Born in Springfield, IL , Perry moved to East St Louis in the 1970s and joined the popular group The Montclairs from 1971 to 1975. They had minor soul ballads that included "Dreaming's Out Of Season", "Prelude to a Heartbreak", and "Begging's Hard To Do". The Montclairs left Paula Records and disbanded in 1975.

Perry later moved to California with former Montclair, Kevin Sanlin, and teamed up as a duo , that had a short stay with two albums, at Capitol in the early 1980's One song 'Just to Make You Happy' had a respectable level of success in radio.

As a songwriter, he became successful writing the 1980 hit “United Together:” for Aretha Franklin.

In the 1990s he had his biggest success with the number-one R&B hit "Call Me" (previously recorded and written by Aretha Franklin), a remake of the 1970 hit, as well as the top forty R&B singles "Amazing Love" and "Forever" (written by Brenda Russell) all from the hit album, Perry's first solo release The Heart of the Man (1991), even though he has released many albums since his breakthrough in 1991. Phil Perry is also featured on many GRP Records projects, with guitarist Lee Ritenour in particular.

In 2006, former co-producer of the Magic album, Chris 'Big Dog' Davis, urged Perry to record a collection of R&B hits, titled Classic Love Songs as an independent one-off project for Shanachie Records. Since that time, Perry has recorded four projects for Shanachie with 'The Big Dog', including the recent duo project with the great Melba Moore.

In 2007 he toured the country with saxophonist Dave Koz. That same year he released his acclaimed album "Mighty Love," for which he was voted the 2007 Male Vocalist of the Year, in the SoulTracks Readers' Choice Awards

He is also featured on the Bebe's Kids soundtrack singing a track with the late Renee Diggs. Other film song credits include 'Roots", "Pretty in Pink", "Short Circuit", "Mr. Wonderful", "Nice Girls Don't Explode",Riding Bean, "Captain Ron" and a cameo appearance in the 2009 release of the Harrison Ford film "CROSSING OVER".

He is a featured vocalist on recordings by Ron Kenoly, Michel Colombier, Don Grusin, Dave Grusin, Freddie Hubbard, George Duke, Najee, Bill Withers, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Mathis, The Benoit-Freeman Project (David Benoit & Russ Freeman), Sergio Mendez, Bobby Womack,Chaka Khan, Fourplay, and Wil Downing, to name a few.

THIS BIG A&E STORY THIS WEEK IS:

The verdict coming out Tuesday on reality show star/former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich’s bribery trial. He was convicted on 17 of 20 counts of abusing the powers of his office in a series of attempted shakedowns captured on undercover government recordings.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Blagojevich was stoic as the jury announced their decisions. His wife Patti Blagojevich was crying and shaking her head "no" as the jurors left the courtroom according to the Chicago Tribune.

Blago's trial last summer found him guilty of lying to the FBI, though that panel deadlocked on all the other counts.

This time the verdict given by the jury of 11 women and one man found Blagojevich guilty on 17 out of 20 criminal counts he faced, including charges of wire fraud, attempted extortion, bribery and conspiracy.

The jury acquitted Blagojevich on one count and deadlocked on two others.

Blagojevich claimed prosecutors "had twisted his words recorded on secret government wiretaps and insisted he was guilty of nothing more than thinking out loud" according to the Tribune.

Blagojevich was booed by some on his way out of the courthouse. As they arrived at their Ravenswood Manor home on the city's Northwest Side Monday afternoon, Patti ushered Blagojevich through the crowd of reporters, onlookers and neighbors.

Judge James Zagel restricted Blagojevich's travel. He will not be allowed to leave Illinois without permission from the court. The government also asked Blagojevich's property -- including his Northwest Side home and a D.C. apartment -- be put up as bond.

Blagojevich heads back to court August 11th for a status hearing could see a date set for the sentencing, probably sometime this fall.

Legal experts said he's likely to be sentenced to at least ten years.

Many pundits and opinionmakers are now saying was it worth spending millions of taxpayers dollars to convict Blago. With corruption in Chicago politics since day one, we think no. Blago was doing what was business as usual in politics—problem was he got caught and didn’t pay off the right people to keep it under wraps. Was he wrong in what he did? You bet. But if corruption is considered the norm, then it becomes the :right: thing to do. We think Blago wont do all his sentence whatever it is. He will get ff on good behavior we are sure if he is finally sentenced. But with this appeal that Blago is setting up in August there’s no telling when he will actually go into a prison. Now its time for some TV producer to get a reality show for him chronicling is freedom before the sentencing and call it, “Doing Time with Blago. “ lol .

St. Louis rap star Nelly was featured in a most talked about sketch, “The Real Husbands of Hollywood”, a three parter that parodied the The Real Housewives franchises and aired during the Bet Awards Sunday. It consisted of the rapper along with Bet Awards host Kevin Hart, Bobby Brown, and Jermaine Dupri (and a cameo by Anthony Anderson and Nick Cannon) . In the skit, while they are playing poker, Hart accuses Nelly for being :on the juice” for being so big and muscular and the rapper becomes the first of the guys to throw juice on Hart for the accusation. After it aired it was apparently a hit with twitter fans even Billboard Magazine editor Daniel Smyth chime d in saying . Real Husbands of Hollywood needs to be a show. With that cast. I would watch. And I don’t watch the other ones.#BETAwards

Hmm BETAwards is also the spot where Jaime Foxx and Martin Lawrence did a sketch called Stank Robbers playing Ugly Wanda and Shenene and now its greenlit to be a film. So it could actually happen.

In unrelated Nelly newz, he is featured on two remixed singles. The first is on newbie rapper YC’s ‘Racks” extended remix and video featuring the rapper and 16 of other rappers (including Chitown;s Twista). The other is the urban remix to Kelly Rowland’s “Commander” single that is on the deluxe album of Rowland’s upcoming CD, “ \Here I Am” that is set to be released July 26. The song will be the third song the two have collaborate don. The first being the No 1chart smash, “Dilemma’ in 2002 and the sequel, ”Gone” that was released in 2011 both songs appear on Nelly’s CD;s; : Nellyville; and :5,0” respectively. .

An opening performer on acclaimed indie hip-hop artist Tech N9ne's(PICTURED) All 6's and 7's tour was shot early Monday morning. The incident occurred hours after a performance in downtown Reno, Nevada's Knitting Factory, in an alley outside of the venue.

According to KOLO TV, the performer was shot in the buttocks after at least 16 rounds were fired in the Douglas Alley between the Knitting Factory and the Old Fitzgerald Casino, where the tour buses were parked. Bullets hit two people and police have apprehended who they believe to be the shooter.

Although initial reports stated that the wounded performer was part of Tech's Strange Music camp -- and that the incident occurred shortly after Tech N9ne's performance -- the label issued a statement refuting some of these notions.

THE BIG STL NEWZ STORY IS:

According to stltoday, about 10,000 "American Idol" fans and hopefuls jammed the streets outside the Scottrade Center Tuesday morning for a chance to show off their pipes and earn a ticket to Hollywood.

By 5:30 a.m., crowds packed 14th and Market streets outside the arena and St. Louis City Hall for a chance to audition at the Scottrade Center.

The host of the show, Ryan Seacrest, came out to greet the cheering crowd and film spots for the show.

At 7 a.m. the first round was allowed into Scottrade to audition. Entrances were staggered from there. While many St. Louisans showed up to audition, singers also came from Arkansas, Louisiana, Indiana and other states.

St. Louis is the first audition city for the show's upcoming 11th season.

The auditions were open to anyone 15 to 28 years old.

Singers auditioned in front of the television show's producers, but judges will not be in St. Louis yet. Qualifying singers will sing for judges when the television show returns to St. Louis this summer.(In ither words, J Lo has not resigned with the AI yet )

It marks the second time American Idol has come to St. Louis. When the show came here in 2004, the show auditioned Carrie Underwood and show finalists Nikko Smith and Aloha Mischeaux.

Franklin signed with teh Cards in 29007 as th eteam;s closer.

Manager Tony La Russa reportedly spoke by phone for about "7 or 8 minutes" with Franklin. Mozeliak and La Russa described the pitcher's reaction to the news as "relief."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As one leaves, two return. The Cardinals welcomed back third baseman David Freese and veteran infielder Nick Punto, who spent the last week with Class AAA Memphis and Class AA Springfield, respectively. Manager Tony La Russa wasted no time getting either player into the mix playing against Cincinnati (who won 6-5)

In more Cards newz, this week. at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park, it premiered the HBO documentary "The Curious Case of Curt Flood." before a local audience and its HBO airing. It was reported that The Rams are one of five NFL teams that have been contacted about possibly moving to Los Angeles, according to a report out of Southern California.

Tim Leiweke, president and chief executive officer of the Anschutz Entertainment Group, which currently is negotiating a lease for property on which a stadium would be built in downtown LA, told the Orange County Register that he had spoken with representatives of the Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers.

Although he indicated this his talks with the Rams and Jaguars hadn't been extensive, Leiweke said all five teams were "in the mix." But, he added, "We're not packing any (moving) vans right now."

Leiweke indicated that AEG would be willing to put up the funds to terminate a team's current stadium lease.

Under terms of their lease, the Rams could be free to leave St. Louis after the 2014 season if stadium upgrades aren't completed.

Rams executive vice president Kevin Demoff said the team's focus "is on forging a new labor agreement with the players. However, (owner) Stan Kroenke has made it perfectly clear that he's focused on working on a lease with the city of St. Louis.

Hmm, guess we will see. With this lockout, that deal may become more fact than speculation

++++++++++++++++++++++++

On other Rams newz, former linebacker David Vobora was awarded $5.4 million as a result of a suit he filed against a company for supplying a contaminated supplement.

The NFL suspended Vobora for four games in 2009 after testing positive for a banned substance, which was found in the supplement.

U.S. District Court Judge Rodney W. Sippel of the Eastern District of Missouri ruled that Anti-Steroid Program LLC, also known as S.W.A.T.S., intentionally misrepresented the supplement. The judgment includes lost compensation from the four-week suspension and marketing opportunities and $2 million for damage to Vobora's reputation.

WORDZ TO THE WHYZ

AT THE BET AWARDS:

Why did Chris Brown wear some pants with two camel humps on the sides? Why did BET make a mistake on the Viewers Choice Award win? Why did Patti Labelle call Marsha Ambrousus a “heifer” during her award speech? Why was Labelle’s; ex husband sitting behind her and her son sitting next to her in the crowd? Why was Beyonce’s performance taped and not live? Why did they have the gospel moment with Mary Mary and Donnie McClurkin right after the sex filled performance of Kelly Rowland and Trey Songz? And why did Kelly conjure up the costume of Janet;s :”I Get Lonely: video during her performance of :”Motivation?” Why did one of the singers from Mary Mary wearing skin tight pants? Why did the guy who was eddie Kane in The Five Heartbeats reunion really look like Eddie Kane? Why did Alexander O neal perform on stage with raggedy teeth and not knowing the lyrics to Saturday Love? Why did Wiz Khalifa win Best New Artist? And why was he shocked when he actually won? Why was singer Shirley Caeser on the Patti Labelle tribute and not the Walter Hawkins tribute with Mary Mary and Donnie McClurkin? And why was she wearing a dress that made her look like Glenda the Good Witch? Why was BET Prez Debra Lee wearing a coat that look like shower curtains? Why was the buzz about how big Free’s boorty was in her dress? Why did Rick Ross take his shirt off exposing enormous man boobs? Why was Chris Brown the only artist performing more than once on the show? Why weren’t there any competition in the Rap female category? And why was Nicki Minaj shocked that she won? Why were there so many rapper s sagging with skinny jeans? Why was the BET censor bleeping more non cussing words than cuss words? And why did it seem as though the Youth Award that was given to both Willow and Jaden seemed fixed?
