TIME TO Get TOWNED!
As we wind down Black Music Month, and go into July, it just dawned on us that OUTTOWN will be celebrating four years in the blog world (The respacing to a new web address was an indication). Wow, who knew this blog could now go into syndication! LOL But seriously, we here at OUTTOWN would like to thank everybody who are fans of the blog, has read the blog, commented on the blog, and even criticized the blog. We do this blog for the community who hasn’t gotten the pub the way they deserve. We hope to live up to that. It’s not easy every week to make this blog innovative and provocative, but its you all that keep us going and we thank you. Next week, we will highlight the BEST OF OUTTOWN as we go on a week hiatus. We will highlight what was goin on in the STL area July 2005, July 2006, July 2007 and a few newz bitz and a feature bitz on STL based rap sensation Stevie Stone for the first week in July.
So HAPPY B-DAY OUTTOWN!
The last highlighted artist we are featuring is Curtis Lee Mayfield (June 3, 1942 – December 26, 1999)
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Mayfield dropped out of high school early to become lead singer and songwriter for The Impressions, then went on to a successful solo career. Perhaps most notably, Mayfield was among the first of a new wave of mainstream African-American R&B performing artists and composers injecting social commentary into their work. This "message music" became extremely popular during the 1960s and 1970s.
Mayfield had several distinctions to his style of playing and singing, adding to the uniqueness of his music. When he taught himself how to play guitar, he tuned the guitar to the black keys of the piano, giving him an open F-sharp tuning — F#, A#, C#, F#, A#, F# — that he used throughout his career. Also, he sang most of his lines in falsetto adding another flavor to his music.
Mayfield's career began in 1956 when he joined The Roosters with Arthur and Richard Brooks and Jerry Butler. Two years later The Roosters, now including also Sam Gooden, became The Impressions. The band had one big hit with "For Your Precious Love". After Butler left the group and was replaced with Fred Cash, Mayfield became lead singer, frequently composing for the band, starting with "Gypsy Woman". Their hit "Amen," an updated version of an old gospel tune, was included in the soundtrack of the 1963 MGM film Lilies of the Field, which starred Sidney Poitier. The Impressions reached the height of their popularity in the mid to late 1960s, with a string of Mayfield compositions that included "Keep On Pushing," "People Get Ready," "It's All Right", and "This is My Country.”
Mayfield had written much of the soundtrack of the civil rights movement in the early 1960s, but by the end of the decade he was a pioneering voice in the black pride movement, in the company of James Brown and Sly Stone. Mayfield's "We're a Winner", a Number 1 soul hit which also reached the Billboard pop Top 20, became an anthem of the black power and black pride movements when it was released in late 1967, much as his earlier "Keep on Pushing" (whose title is quoted in the lyrics of "We're a Winner") had been an anthem for Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Independent from his work with The Impressions, Mayfield became a songwriting powerhouse in Chicago, writing and producing scores of hits for other artists. He also owned the Mayfield and Windy C labels, distributed by Cameo-Parkway, and was partners in the Curtom label (first independent, then distributed by Buddah then Warner Bros and finally RSO.)
In 1970, Mayfield left The Impressions and began a solo career, founding the independent record label Curtom Records. The commercial and critical peak of his solo career came with his music album Super Fly, the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film of the same name, and one of the most influential albums in African-American history. Unlike the soundtracks to other blaxploitation films (most notably Isaac Hayes' score for Shaft), which glorified the ghetto excesses of the characters, Mayfield's lyrics consisted of hard-hitting commentary on the state of affairs in black, urban ghettos at the time, as well as direct criticisms of several characters in the film. Along with Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Stevie Wonder's Innervisions, this album ushered in a new socially conscious, funky style of popular soul music. He was dubbed 'The Gentle Genius' to reflect his outstanding and innovative musical output with the constant presence of his soft yet insistent vocals.
Super Fly brought success that resulted in Mayfield being tapped for additional soundtracks, some of which he wrote and produced while having others perform the vocals. Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded Mayfield's soundtrack for Claudine in 1974, while Aretha Franklin recorded the soundtrack for Sparkle in 1976. Mayfield worked with Mavis Staples on the 1977 soundtrack for the film A Piece of the Action.
In his 2003 biography of Curtis Mayfield, titled "People Never Give Up", author Peter Burns noted that Curtis has 140 songs in the Curtom vaults. Burns indicated that the songs maybe already completed or in the stages of completion, so that they could then be released commercially.
In later years, Mayfield's music would be featured in the movies I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Hollywood Shuffle, and Friday (though not on the soundtrack).
Mayfield was active throughout the 1970s and 1980s. On August 13, 1990, Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down after stage lighting equipment fell on him at an outdoor concert at Wingate Field in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York. This tragedy set him back, but Mayfield forged ahead. He was unable to play guitar, but he wrote, sang and directed the recording of his Grammy nominated last album, New World Order.
Mayfield received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. Mayfield was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 1999.

Speaking of Nelly, before hitting the Star Power Weekend event, he joined his lady love Ashanti’s family and friends at the opening night party of “The Wiz” at K Lounge in New York City on last Thursday. She never was a skilled dancer, but hey, at least she has the gonads to do a role that has been so famously played by veteran singer Stephanie Mills. We will give her that much.
Last week, it was reported that Grammy Award winning Missouri native (Kemmet. Mo) Sheryl Crow is confirmed as the official musical entertainment for the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Charity Concert downtown on July 11. The free concert will take place under the Gateway Arch, and benefits Stand Up to Cancer. Pepsi is presenting the concert

Obama will be the fourth U.S. president to throw out the first pitch in the Midsummer Classic -- joining John F. Kennedy (1962), Richard Nixon ('70) and Gerald Ford ('76) -- and will be the seventh president to attend an All-Star Game. The first to attend an All-Star Game was Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1937.
In other sports newz, former St. Louis Blues player made the NHL’s Hall of fame this week. Hull joins his Hall of Fame father, former Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets star Bobby Hull, as one of the top father-son duos in sports history. In related news, The St. Louis Blues are reportedly trying to bring an All Star game to the Lou. Dave Checketts, chairman of Blues owner SCP Worldwide, reportedly sent an official letter to the NHL for the request for 2011. Well, we are sure the NHL will be looking at the MLB All Star game Weekend here next month to see how it all will fair before even considering the letter of application.
St. Louis native/sports announcer Jack Buck made entertainment headlines after his new sports talk show Joe Buck Live last Monday on HBO. The headlines stemmed from the harsh criticisms of the show, which debuted in June, and booking guest comedian Artie Lange of the Howard Stern Radio Show . the critics has called it “a borefest” and that Lange saved the show with off color (and uncomfortable) humor throughout the hour show. According to nydailynews.com, Lange ripped apart Buck and his show with a slew of vulgarity and unwholesome one-liners. ‘You're out of your league, Buck; just stick to play-by-play.’ After viewing it, it was evident that Buck is out of his league in this medium as far as trying to respond back to a quick witted comedian (The controversy has ante upped Lange's negotiations for his own reality show Saving Artie Lange as reported on the Howard Stern Radio Show) Hmm, all we have to say is karma is a bitch. Does anyone remember when Buck ripped into football player Randy Moss for his mooning antic after his touchdown for unclassy behavior a couple years back? Hmm, well, whattup with the class with Lange on the show knowing that he is very suggestive with his behavior? Now how does it feel to be the center of controversy?

Happy 100th to East St. Louis adopted legendary dancer/choreographer Katherine Dunham. On Tuesday, she would have been 100 years old if she lived (She died May 21 , 2006 at the age of 96). Earlier this month, it was reported that Grammy Award winning dee-jay Jazzy Jeff said his performance at a Kansas City club was stopped because of censorship, not race. According to usatoday.com, Jazzy Jeff left the stage during a show in the city's downtown Power & Light District after saying venue managers didn't like the type of music he was playing, which was hip-hop. Power & Light District officials reportedly said they wanted the production crew to turn down the music because it was too loud for the sound system. Critics of the district's handling of the show have suggested race played a role. But Jazzy Jeff blamed it on censorship. He told The Associated Press that show organizers simply didn't like the "style of music" he was playing. The Cordish Co., which runs the district, has taken criticism for its dress code in the area, which critics say targets young black men. Hmm. Seem like someone is trying to play the PR spin. Come on yawl, turn hip-hop music down? At a nightclub? That’s like saying take ice out of Antartica. We are sure the club knew what type of music Jazzy Jeff played before booking him especially with his association with Will Smith in the 1980s.

CAN'T WAIT TO BRING LIFE BACK! BUT THIS TIME IM GOING TO BE EXTREMELY STRICT WITH THE DRESS CODE AND AGE!!! COMING SOON.” Yeah havent we heard that riddle before. Upscale today, hood tomorrow when the “extra dollars” hit the hand s. But, with the injustice ensued with his former club Club Society a couple of months ago resulting in the club’s abrupt closing, we hope he sticks to what he says.
We are hearing there’s a new club that just opened called The City located between 18th and 20th ON WASHINGTON Ave,. and after Club Xes close s its doors after 3 a.m., inside Drunken Fish on the Landing, the club turns into Club Breakfast, partyin until the sun come sup. And lastly, YOURS TRULY, Ma’at Atkins would like to thank St. Louis American Partyline Columnist Delores Shante for joshin me about wearing my now infamous white mesh hoodie at the Superjam 2 concert at Verizon Wireless. We didn’t know that it would cause that much of a fashion stir, but apparently it did. In her words she wrote on last week’s Partyline: “And I wouldn’t be playin’ fair if I didn’t put my boy Maat on blast for that mesh hoodie (yes, the hood was mesh too) he was rockin’! Everybody knows he has his own style, but that was too “cutting edge” for me to handle – my soul cried out every time he caught my eye.”
All we can say is, if the white mesh hoodie was newz for Miss Shante, then apparently we were newsworthy. Who knew? LOL
MIA FOUND Tijuana Bradley. According to stltoday.com, the reality star of the show "Survivor: Panama Islands” ( 2003) is living in Chicago.
BLIND PICZ. Who was this guy who was up in VIP at Star Power’s party at Skybox last Saturday?
BLIND BITZ. (FOR THOSE WHO ARE BLOWIN UP MY EMAIL ABOUT THIS. LOL)
Which local promoter totally dissed OUTTOWN with coverage of its recent event by debnying access to cover it cuz of their disappointment of how its show was promoted with a specific local radio station?
Why were people protesting outside CBS Studios in Hollywood after talk show host apologized for the Bristol Palin joke? And why hasn’t Palin apologized for demogoging President Obama as a hatemonger during the 2008 campaign? And why did PETA make a big deal about Obama killing a fly during a recent TV interview? Why was samonella in cookie dough the big story this week? Why didn’t Tim Hardaway or Allen Iverson show up at Star Power Weekend?

It is a truly independent project with years of hard work, thoughtfulness, and skill behind its execution and style. The extremely diverse and talented team behind Streetballers is and will be the key to all future success. We are young artist driven by love, loyalty and friendship. Our goal is to inspire as individuals and our film is a tool to inspire the masses. We're planning on opening the film in Saint Louis, MO on August 21st then expanding to various cities with a large urban/sports/college market (Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit).
We have toured the U.S. and won numerous awards through festivals. We have turned down traditional distribution outlets and decided to self-distribute the film utilizing DCI compliant technology (Digital Projection). In Saint Louis, we set two records. The highest rated film in the history of the Saint Louis International Film festival (beating Oscar winning and nominated films Juno, The Wrestler, and Slumdog Millionaire) and also the highest attendance record selling out the day before each screening.
We are looking to release the film in Saint Louis on August 21st we would like to stagger the release in other cities to late September/early October and try to release in conjunction with the LeBron James documentary being released by Lions Gate. Directed by St. Louis bred Matthew Scott Krentz, who also co-stars, Streetballers hit the festival circuit in June 2008, making its World Premiere at the Hollywood Black Film Festival. It has gone on to play in Saint Louis, Detroit, New York City, Nashville, North Carolina, and Philadelphia, winning multiple awards such as Best Dramatic Feature, an Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, and a Second Place Jury Award for Best Feature Film.
We realize and embrace our roles as mentors. We except that responsibilty, while challenging ourselves to be the best rolemodels we can be,we stress education;because without education would not be where we are today. The Streetballers team has an extremely popular film, with a ton of street credit, and has developed a tremendous theatrical strategy of releasing the film in theatres across the U.S. with the Streetballers producer/actors and director touring with the film. For more info go to www.streetballersthemovie.com
