This weekend is the celebration of Juneteenth (June 19) and Father’s Day (June 21)

This week’s BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPOTLIGHT is on opera singer Robert McFerrin
Robert McFerrin Sr. (March 19, 1921 – November 24, 2006) was the first African-American male to sing at the
Metropolitan Opera in New York City. McFerrin was born in Marianna, Arkansas, When Robert was two, his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
Robert showed vocal talent at a early age, singing while still a
boy soprano in a local church's gospel choir. As a young teenager he joined two of his siblings in a trio. The three accompanied their father on regional preaching engagements, singing gospel songs, hymns and spirituals. Reverend McFerrin did not wish Robert to sing non-gospel music, but in the end this wish was undone by his desire to give his son the best possible education.
After Robert completed eight grades in Memphis, his father sent him to live with his aunt and uncle in
St. Louis in order for him to attend Sumner High School.[2] There, the young man's musical horizons widened. Graduating from high school in 1940, Robert enrolled at Fisk University in Nashville, TN. Following his freshman year the young baritone won a scholarship to attend Chicago Musical College and transferred to that institution. World War II and the Draft interrupted McFerrin's schooling, but he returned to Chicago Musical College after discharge and received his degree in 1948.[4]
That same year Robert moved to New York City and began coaching voice with Hall Johnson, the composer and choir director. Robert married Sara Copper, another aspiring singer, in 1949. The couple had two children, Robert Jr. (Bobby) and Brenda.
In New York, Robert McFerrin's
singing career prospered. A 1949 appearance in a small role in the Kurt Weill Broadway musical, Lost in the Stars, led to acquaintance with Boris Goldovsky.[3] Goldovsky presented the baritone in the title role of Rigoletto at the Tanglewood Music Festival in 1949 and cast him in his company, the New England Opera Theater (later the Goldovsky Opera Theater[5]) as Valentin in Faust and in Iphigenie en Tauride by Gluck. That year he also performed as Amonasro in Aida with the National Negro Opera Company[6] and made his New York City Opera debut, singing the role of Popaloi,[7] a voodoo doctor,[4] in the premiere of William Grant Still's Haitian opera, Troubled Island.[8]
In 1950 McFerrin sang the title role in Rigoletto with the New England Opera.[9] Moving between opera and Broadway, in 1951 he performed in a revival of The Green Pastures, and the following year he sang in My Darlin' Aida, a version of Verdi's Aida updated to 1861 and set in Memphis, Tennessee.[3] He also returned to the National Negro Opera Company in 1952 to sing Valentin in Faust.[4]
Robert McFerrin had distinguished himself in singing competitions earlier in life, but in 1953 he eclipsed these honors by winning the Metropolitan Opera's "Auditions of the Air," the first African-American to do so.[2] During this time, it was usual for the winner of the "Auditions of the Air" to receive six months' training and a contract to sing at the Met. McFerrin received 13 months training but did not receive a contract.[3] No black person had ever sung on the stage of the Met. [11] In addition, McFerrin was the first African-American to sing at both the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera.[12] He achieved the same distinction with his Rigoletto in Naples at the San Carlo Opera in 1956.[2]
Robert McFerrin's debut role at the Met was Amonasro, the Ethiopian king, in Aida. He sang for three years at the Metropolitan Opera, seven times as Amonasro, once as Valentin in Faust and twice in the title role of the jester in Rigoletto. While Amonasro is black skinned, neither Valentin nor Rigoletto are.
Concerned with the uncertainty of his future in New York, McFerrin resigned his position at the Met in favor of his chances in Hollywood.
[1] After 1958 Robert McFerrin appeared no more at the Metropolitan Opera. Robert McFerrin went to California in 1958 to work on the Otto Preminger movie, Porgy and Bess.[2] The casting plans for this production of the George Gershwin opera slated Sidney Poitier as Porgy. Poitier was to act the role onscreen and "lip-sych" the musical numbers. Robert McFerrin was engaged to provide the vocals.
Robert and Sara set up a vocal studio in Los Angeles and began teaching.
[2] In 1959 Robert was engaged to teach singing lessons at the Sibelius Academy in Helskinki,[9] and later he became a voice teacher at Sacramento State College. While they were living in California Robert and Sara's marriage ended in divorce. Robert credited his ex-wife with helping to support the family while he was beginning his career. She also played as his piano accompanist and helped him learn new music at the keyboard.[2] After 15 years in California, Robert McFerrin moved to St. Louis, MO
In 1973 McFerrin returned to the city where he had attended high school. St. Louis would remain the baritone's primary residence for the rest of his life. McFerrin accepted an appointment as Artist-in-Residence at the St. Louis Institute of Music Conservatory,
[14] both performing and passing on to students the lessons of a full career.
During these years he sang in public with his children. Bobby and Brenda had grown up in a household where music was a major topic of conversation, and where, as Bobby McFerrin recalls, "there was all kinds of music."
[15] Both Bobby and Brenda became professional singers, though they chose not to follow their parents' footsteps into the classical field. Bobby became a non-classical singer, conductor, composer and Grammy Award winner. Calling herself a consumer vocalist,[16] Brenda pursued a career as a Motown recording artist.[14] The three sang in 1987 at a benefit concert for the McFerrin Endowment for Minority Artist at the Sheldon Concert Hall.[14]
Although McFerrin sustained a stroke in 1989 which affected his speech, he remained able to sing. In 1994 he appeared with his son and the St. Louis Symphony; Bobby conducted and McFerrin senior sang.[1] He married his second wife, Athena Bush, in 1995.[17]
McFerrin was twice awarded honorary doctorates: in 1987 from Stowe Teacher's College, St. Louis, and in 1989 from the University of Missouri.[2] In 2003 Opera America, in conjunction with the Association of U.S. and International Professional Opera Companies and Opera Volunteers International, honored McFerrin with a Lifetime Achievement Award.[18] He is commemorated by a brass star and bronze plaque embedded in the St. Louis Walk of Fame.[19]
Robert Keith McFerrin Sr., suffered a heart attack on November 24, 2006 and died at the age of 85. He is buried in St. Louis, MO at the Jefferson Barrack National Cemetery.

The big newz item this week was Hot 104.1’s Superjam 2 (SEE OUT 632 FOR PICS AND COVERAGE) that was held at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre last Saturday. It was estimated that over 15,000 attendees came through, breaking its last year’s record of an estimate of 10,000. This year’s bill had many national recording acts including headliner rapper Young Jeezy as well as Keri Hilson, Plies (who was the standout), Soulja Boy, Trey Songz, Lil Boosie, OJ Juiceman, Hurricane Chris, Yo Gotti (who performed there last year) day26, Jerimih and Pleasure P and St. Louis based national recording artists St. Lunatics (another highlight and were the surprise act of that event), Jibbs and Shorty da kid (who were unscheduled) and Unladylike. They also had a Mixtape Segment where local rappers performed who are getting on including Joka, Young Ro, Gena and Kenny Knox.

Speaking of concerts, the closest that Grammy Award winning R&B superstar and activist Stevie Wonder will be in St. Louis is two hours away in Kansas City, Mo where he will perform a concert at the Starlight Theatre June 26 in Kansas City. Mo. for ticket info go to www.kcstarlight,ciom or

Also, on the concert mode, Grammy Award winning Chicago based rapper Kanye West announced this week on the ABC talk show, “The View’ that he and pop sensation Lady Gaga will co-headline a tour that will begin in the fall. The two will both serve as the tour’s headlining artists.
“She’s talented and so incredible that she’s not an opening act,” Kanye explained on the ABC talk show. “We’re doing it together, with no opening act.”
While details for the upcoming tour are still sketchy, Kanye promises that, “With two creative minds like ours, it will be incredible. “
I’m into her style,” Kanye told after the tour announcement. “It’s hot right now. I mean, I’m a guy — so obviously I’m into her.”
Uh yeah ya think. Hmm we wonder if all theis obsession has to do with the fact that ladygaga is in the same aura of his ex the supposed bisexual, ex-porn star Amber Rose?
In other Kanye newz, he recently directed the debut video for Canadian rapper Drake’s “Best I Ever Had.” Ad did the video/track remix for Beyonce’s latest single “Ego” for Beyonce's "Above and Beyonce" Video/Remix collection.

The other Chicago based rapper makin the Hollywood scene is Common who is rumored to sign up to play B.A. Baracus (Mr T’s old TV character) in the movie version of the 1980s TV show, “the A-Team.” Filming is slated for this August and will be released next summer. Common as B.A. Baracus? Is this a mis cast? (Its kinda like Jamie Foxx as tubs in Miami vice) Hmm, its gonna be hard to picture him as that iconic character after Mr. T’s role in that character. Lets hope its afresh version of the character and they don’t rely on Mr-Teein him with a mowhawk and I pity the fool patter!
St. Louis Cards beat Detroit 11-2. at Busch Stadium Tuesday. What mad eteh game a special occasion was when Cards first baseman Albert Pujols hit his fifth home run in five games and 23rd on the season. The home run ball traveled an estimated 456 feet, pushed Pujols into the MLB home run lead. In related newz, this week Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley overtook Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols for the leading vote- getter in the National League balloting for this year's All-Star Game, to be held July 14 in St. Louis.
Utley, who was behind Pujols by about 2,500 votes last week, now holds a 15,000 vote edge on the Cardinals superstar. All-star voting concludes Thursday, July 2 at 11:59 P.M. (et).

Also on Tuesday, in the East of St. Louis, all of the St. Louis Rams players and cheerleaders joined forces with the East St. Louis Park District officials, KaBOOM! and the South End New Development Organization to build a new playground in Lincoln Park in just one day. The players, cheerleaders, coaches and hundreds of volunteers from spent the day laying the groundwork for the new playground. The playground's design was rendered from drawings created by children during a "Design Day" held in April and replaces the currently unsafe equipments in the park. The old equipment was installed around 60 years ago. the new playground will be a space for more than 200 children in the community to play. This is a great effort by the Rams. Now if the Rams can build up its team in one day then we wouldn’t have to worry about the rumors of the ball team being sold and possible moved from St. Louis. WORDZ TO THE WHYZ at SUPERJAM 2: Why were there so many brothas sagging and sistas wearing stripper heels at the concert? Why did Pleasure p say that St. Louis was too quiet? Why did a securityguard had to put a sista up on his shoulders to get her away from a fight? And why was she she kicking her heels when she was carried away? Why did Keri Hilson and her female dancers bend down and shake their asses like they were getting smashed? Why was a piece of pizza nine dollars? Why did Plies ask the women in crowd if they ever got their pussies ate with a spoon? Why did mostly underage girls volunteer to walk up on stage with Plies after he asked which girl wanted to feel his Johnson inside his pants? Why didn’t Slodown perform with the St. Lunatics but had the UCME mascot perform along with them? And why was there a posse member in Young Jeezy’s camp who was in a wheelchair on stage on his cellphone during the concert?

RED, WHITE & BLUE PARTY @ SKYBOX Saturday July 4th 2009 at 9 p.m. Hosted by Wellz Fargo S.L.I.M., Kyjuan & Murphy Lee

Streetballers is an award winning film from a filmmaker groomed by Sundance, and represented by top Hollywood representation. And yes.... Living in Saint Louis. It is a truly independent project with years of hard work, thoughtfulness, and skill behind its execution and style. The extremely diverse and talented team behind Streetballers is and will be the key to all future success. We are young artist driven by love, loyalty and friendship. Our goal is to inspire as individuals and our film is a tool to inspire the masses. We're planning on opening the film in Saint Louis, MO on August 21st then expanding to various cities with a large urban/sports/college market (Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit).

We have toured the U.S. and won numerous awards through festivals. We have turned down traditional distribution outlets and decided to self-distribute the film utilizing DCI compliant technology (Digital Projection). In Saint Louis, we set two records. The highest rated film in the history of the Saint Louis International Film festival (beating Oscar winning and nominated films Juno, The Wrestler, and Slumdog Millionaire) and also the highest attendance record selling out the day before each screening.

We are looking to release the film in Saint Louis on August 21st we would like to stagger the release in other cities to late September/early October and try to release in conjunction with the LeBron James documentary being released by Lions Gate. Directed by St. Louis bred Matthew Scott Krentz, who also co-stars, Streetballers hit the festival circuit in June 2008, making its World Premiere at the Hollywood Black Film Festival. It has gone on to play in Saint Louis, Detroit, New York City, Nashville, North Carolina, and Philadelphia, winning multiple awards such as Best Dramatic Feature, an Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, and a Second Place Jury Award for Best Feature Film.
The Streetballers team has attached the popular indie shoe company, Greedy Genius to create and distribute the official Streetballers shoe, at Finish Line stores this fall. We have also attached three platinum hip-hop artist to the soundtrack and will be shooting the music video this spring to help promote the film and the soundtrack.

Just over a month ago, Streetballers writer/director/producer/co-star Matthew Krentz signed with APA and Leverage Management. A portion of the proceeds from the soundtrack will be donated to several different charities. As we mentioned above the team is comprised of loyal, hardworking and loving artists who are dedicated to reaching up, reaching out and giving back to the St.Louis community.

We realize and embrace our roles as mentors. We except that responsibilty, while challenging ourselves to be the best rolemodels we can be,we stress education;because without education would not be where we are today. The Streetballers team has an extremely popular film, with a ton of street credit, and has developed a tremendous theatrical strategy of releasing the film in theatres across the U.S. with the Streetballers producer/actors and director touring with the film. For more info go to

  1. Nice post.

    I say,
The emphasis of a barber school's education is to teach the essentials of providing hair and skin services for men. They often learn to perform razor styling, hair cutting and coloring, blow drying, foam shaves, steam facials, and facial massages.
Using a good hair salon is key to great hair care. But how do you select the right hair salon from the many choices available?
You can do to guarantee that you always receive the best hair cuts, latest professional techniques and stellar service is to choose the right hair salon. Granted, that is easier said than done. With hair salons on practically every street corner, narrowing down your options to find the right salon can be confusing.
